Low-level software memory safety analysis: Attack and defense
Low-level software, as the name suggests, is the kind of software that runs more closely with the hardware than normal applications. They usually undertake the responsibilities of initializing the hardware, setting up the execution environment, and directly interacting with the hardware functionalities. Due to the intrinsic features of the key role played by low-level software, it naturally requires and gains higher hardware privilege than other software to run, making it a promising target for system attackers. To conveniently manipulate the hardware, low-level software developers commonly adopt memory-unsafe programming languages such as C and C++. On the one hand, the direct memory access programming language makes the development process easier, on the other hand, however, it makes the low-level software prone to be compromised by memory corruption vulnerabilities. In this thesis, we start with the causes and consequences of memory corruption vulnerability and then showcase that memory safety issue is a main threat to low-level software security. We discuss and analyze low-level software memory safety issues in terms of both their attack and defense sides. From the perspective of the attack scenario, we tackle the problems that still hinder the detection of memory corruption vulnerability detection. In particular, feeding random inputs to the software—a technique called fuzz testing—is used. Specifically, We designed and implemented tailored fuzzers to find the memory corruption vulnerabilities in the low-level software, embedded system firmware, and bootloader. For each, the fuzzers aim to explore as many parts of the low-level software as well as trigger more crashes as possible. In our experiments, 46 previously unknown vulnerabilities were found, and 11 CVEs were assigned to the findings. From the perspective of defense, providing an easy-to-use framework with rich features for highlevel applications while maintaining the memory safety guarantees is the essential part. To solve this problem, we designed and implemented a trusted execution environment framework for RISC-V architecture by utilizing RISC-V hypervisor extension and an existing hardware memory isolation technique. The framework provides full backward compatibility and secure IO, which means an unmodified virtual machine can run directly on top of the framework and benefit from transparent, secure IO transmission. Our experiment showed that the framework achieved similar performance with AMD SEV extension and trivial overhead compared with native running.
Mechanochemical Activation of Mn3O4: Implications for Lithium Intercalation
Manganese oxide (Mn3O4) was subjected to mechanochemical activation
(MCA) using a planetary ball mill to investigate the influence of milling parameters on
lithium intercalation. After activation, Mn3O4 was lithiated in suspension with organolithium
compounds. Structural changes, including LiMn3O4 formation, were analyzed by powder X ray diffraction (PXRD) with Rietveld refinement, supported by scanning electron microscope
(SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), physisorption isotherms, and inductively
coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Additional insights into lattice defects were
obtained via Raman spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and in situ pressure and temperature monitoring during
milling. No phase transformation occurred during MCA, though crystallite size decreased to 8.5(5) nm after 4 h at 400 rpm in a
zirconia milling jar. Notably, a final crystallite size of 90(9) nm was reached after just 10 min at the same speed. MCA did not cause
significant oxygen release from the structure. Short-duration MCA at sufficient speed enhanced lithium intercalation in Mn3O4,
whereas prolonged milling or lower speeds hindered the process. These findings demonstrate that brief mechanochemical activation
effectively improves lithium intercalation in transition metal oxides, offering a promising approach for tuning electrochemical
properties
Hexaphenyl-1,2-Diphosphonium Dication [Ph3P-PPh3]2+: Superacid, Superoxidant, or Super Reagent?
The oxidation of triphenylphosphine by perfluorinated phenaziniumF aluminate in difluorobenzene affords hexaaryl-1,2-diphosphonium dialuminate 1. Dication 12+ is valence isoelectronic with elusive hexaphenylethane, where instead the formation of a mixture of the trityl radical and Gomberg’s dimer is favored. Quantum-chemical calculations in combination with Raman/IR spectroscopies rationalize the stability of the P–P bonded dimer in 12+ and suggest, akin to the halogens, facile homolytic as well as heterolytic scission. Thus, 12+ serves as a surrogate of both the triphenylphosphorandiylium dication (Ph3P2+) and the triphenylphosphine radical monocation (Ph3P·+). Treating 1 with dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) or tBu3P replaces triphenylphosphine under heterolytic P–P bond scission. Qualifying as a superoxidant (E vs Fc/Fc+ = +1.44 V), 1 oxidizes trimethylphosphine. Based on halide abstraction experiments (–BF4, –PF6, –SbCl6, –SbF6) as well as the deoxygenation of triethylphosphine oxide, triflate anions as well as toluic acid, 1 also features Lewis superacidity. The controlled hydrolysis affords Hendrickson’s reagent, which itself finds broad use as a dehydration agent. Formally, homolytic P–P bond scission occurs with diphenyldisulfide (PhSSPh) and the triple bonds in benzo- and acetonitrile. The irradiation by light cleaves the P–P bond homolytically and generates transient triphenylphosphine radical cations, which engage in H-atom abstraction as well as CH phosphoranylation
Dependence of bioavailability of folic acid and (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate on baseline red blood cell folate concentrations in infants
Background: Folate bioavailability may depend on folate status of an individual and the form of folate presents in foods. Objective: We studied whether changes of red blood cell (RBC)-folate concentrations following dietary intervention with folic acid or the calcium salt of (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF-Ca) depend on baseline RBC-folate and differ by the folate form provided. Methods: We studied 167 infants randomized to infant formula with either 15.2 μg folic acid or 15.8 μg 5-MTHF-Ca per 100 kcal from <1 month of age (baseline visit) until age 16 weeks (visit 4). Generalised Additive Models (GAMs) were used to study whether the changes in RBC-folate concentrations between baseline visit and visit 4 (study outcome) depend on the intervention (folic acid or 5-MTHF-Ca), length of the intervention and a smooth effect of baseline RBC-folate concentrations for each intervention group. Results: The GAM base model showed that the change of RBC-folate was higher in infants with lower baseline RBC-folate concentrations. This model explained 42 % of the deviance in the data. For the group that received folic acid, this effect was estimated to be linear (effective degrees of freedom = 1). In the group receiving 5-MTHF-Ca, the effect of baseline RBC-folate on the change of RBC-folate was non-linear. The smooth effect of baseline RBC-folate on the change of RBC-folate concentrations differed between the intervention groups (p = 0.002). In infants with higher baseline RBC-folate concentrations, the change of RBC-folate concentration is systematically higher in the 5-MTHF-Ca group than in the folic acid group. Conclusion: The bioavailability of folic acid and 5-MTHF-Ca shows physiological decline when baseline RBC-folate is high. The reduction of the bioavailability is more pronounced after folic acid intake. The results may impact infant's intake recommendations from different folate forms. The molecular mechanisms behind these results deserve further investigations
phylaxe stetiger Weiterentwicklungsbedarf besteht.
Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability and is the second leading cause of death worldwide.
The disease is challenging not only medically, but also socially and socio-economically. In the con-
text of the increasingly younger patients and demographic change, it is clear that there is a constant
need for development in the identification of risk factors and prevention as well as in therapy and
secondary prophylaxis. Initial success in the acute care of stroke patients was achieved with the in-
travenous lysis therapy over 25 years ago, but therapy was significantly revolutionized with the de-
velopment of endovascular treatment methods. This also made it possible for the first time to exam-
ine extracted thrombi histopathologically.
This retrospective study includes a total of 203 stroke patients who were treated by mechanical
thrombectomy at Saarland University Hospital between January 2018 and June 2019 due to large
vessel occlusion of the anterior or posterior circulation. For all of these, retrieved clot was available
for histopathological assessment. The analysis of the thrombus material was supported by the De-
partment of Neuropathology at Saarland University Hospital and the statistical analysis by StaBiL,
Zweibrücken. In order to prevent recurrent strokes, it is essential to identify the causes - however, in many cases the
cause cannot be finally clarified. The aim of this study was to assess whether clinical conclusions can
be drawn about the cause of the stroke based on the histopathological findings. Furthermore, the fo-
cus was on the question of whether the thrombus composition has an influence on the CT image find-
ings and the angiographic result (mTICI).
57.1% of the preserved thrombi could be assigned to precipitation thrombi, which often allow clinical
conclusions to be drawn about a cardioembolic cause of the stroke. Statistically, however, no signifi-
cant correlation between neuropathological diagnosis and cause of stroke according to TOAST crite-
ria could be demonstrated (Monte carlo p = 0.4580). Various studies controversially discuss the rela-
tionship between red blood cells within the thrombus and cardioembolic cause. Compared with large
studies, a statistically significant correlation was confirmed in the present study (p = 0.0432) and, in a
further step, the odds ratio is estimated to 0.988 (95% CI: 0.976-1.000) meaning that for an one-unit
increase in red thrombus (%) a decrease of about 1.2% in the odds ratio of being a cardioembolic
stroke is expected. Besides that, a correlation between the measured thrombus density and the histo-
pathological detection of red thrombus (p < 0.0001) was also confirmed. With regard to the success
of the intervention, no correlation was shown between the thrombus composition and the outcome
(mTICI).
In addition, there were two aspects that should be examined in more detail in further studies. Firstly,
there was an accumulation of patients with hyperuricemia/gout or pathological serum uric acid levels.
This is not currently the subject of the relevant risk factors, but its influence on the development of
stroke is already the subject of controversial debate. Further studies should assess the context and
clarify the question of whether prophylaxis could make a significant contribution to reducing strokes.
Furthermore, several thrombi were found to contain foreign material (26.6%), which is suspected to
be associated with the intervention materials. Few studies are currently dealing with this topic; fur-
ther prospective studies, if necessary, with regard to the materials and possible (long-term) conse-
quences for the patient are urgently recommended

Background: Low baseline skeletal muscle mass and sarcopenia are unfavourable prognostic factors in patients with large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) treated with immunochemotherapy. Artificial intelligence deep learning models, such as neural networks provide powerful image processing opportunities and can be exploited for efficient evaluation of sarcopenia. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of evaluating muscle mass with a neural network and to examine the prognostic significance of muscle mass as per AI-evaluation in patients with DLBCL.
Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study. Only patients with available computer tomography (CT) images of the abdomen of diagnostic quality prior to treatment start and well as at end of treatment with R-CHOP were included. Two cohorts were selected: a patient cohort aged 80 years old (n=42). Measurements were performed both using a deep learning convolutional neural network and manually. The neural network used has been previously validated (McSweeney et al 2022). The skeletal muscle area (SMA) was measured at the level of the third lumbar vertebra and the skeletal muscle index (SMI) was calculated based on the body mass index. The measured SMA and SMI values were used to diagnose sarcopenia based on the cut-off values according to Van Werf et al 2018.
Results: Across all patients, a significant loss of SMA (in average 6.29 cm2) and SMI (in average 2.31 cm2/m2) was observed after treatment with R-CHOP (p < 0.001). In young patients this difference was smaller and was not statistically significant. Skeletal muscle loss and presence of sarcopenia was more prominent in elderly patients. The diagnosis of sarcopenia both before (HR 2.87, 95% CI 1.17-7.0, p=0.021) and after therapy (HR 3.17, 95% CI 1.08-9.33, p=0.037) was also associated univariately with worse overall survival. In patients aged <60 years, SMA and SMI post treatment was not affected by number of cycles. The AI-based evaluations was largely confirmed in the manual evaluation with only minor discrepancies.
Conclusion: Skeletal muscle status and sarcopenia can be accurately evaluated with AI in patients with DLBCL and is a negative prognostic factor for survival
eyeNotate: Interactive Annotation of Mobile Eye Tracking Data Based on Few-Shot Image Classification
Mobile eye tracking is an important tool in psychology and human-centered interaction
design for understanding how people process visual scenes and user interfaces. However,
analyzing recordings from head-mounted eye trackers, which typically include an egocen tric video of the scene and a gaze signal, is a time-consuming and largely manual process.
To address this challenge, we develop eyeNotate, a web-based annotation tool that enables
semi-automatic data annotation and learns to improve from corrective user feedback. Users
can manually map fixation events to areas of interest (AOIs) in a video-editing-style inter face (baseline version). Further, our tool can generate fixation-to-AOI mapping suggestions
based on a few-shot image classification model (IML-support version). We conduct an
expert study with trained annotators (n = 3) to compare the baseline and IML-support
versions. We measure the perceived usability, annotations’ validity and reliability, and
efficiency during a data annotation task. We asked our participants to re-annotate data
from a single individual using an existing dataset (n = 48). Further, we conducted a semi structured interview to understand how participants used the provided IML features and
assessed our design decisions. In a post hoc experiment, we investigate the performance of
three image classification models in annotating data of the remaining 47 individuals
Jackknife and bootstrapping resampling techniques to evaluate the precision of lens formula constants
Purpose
The purpose of this study was to develop a method for evaluating intraocular lens (IOL) formula constant uncertainties using two modern statistical techniques—jackknife and bootstrap resampling.
Methods
Using two datasets (dataset 1: 888 eyes treated with the aberration correcting Hoya Vivinex IOL, dataset 2: 821 eyes with the spherical Alcon SA60AT/SN60AT IOL), formula constant uncertainties for the SRK/T (Aconst), Hoffer-Q (pACD), Holladay 1 (SF), simplified Haigis (a0) with preset a1/a2, Haigis (triplet a0/a1/a2), Castrop (triplet C/H/R) and Olsen formula (ACD) were evaluated. All input parameters were jackknife and bootstrap (NB = 1000) resampled, and formula constants for each sample derived using nonlinear iterative optimisation techniques.
Results
In single constant formulae where the constant acts directly on the effective lens position (Hoffer-Q, Holladay 1, simplified Haigis, Olsen), the formula constant in each case showed a standard deviation (SD) of about 0.01 with both jackknife and bootstrap sampling. The SRK/T Aconst showed a SD of about 0.018, and the Haigis and Castrop formulae with constant triplets showed large variations in the 3 constants (a0/a1/a2 about 0.036/0.005/0.002, C/H/R about 0.001/0.011/0.012). Direct formula reversion and solving for the formula constant yielded systematically larger SD values (Aconst/pACD,SF/a0/ACD = 0.586/0.395/0.403/0.324/0.304) with highly skewed distributions.
Conclusion
The distributions of formula constants with relevant benchmarks such as SD or confidence intervals can be derived with jackknife and bootstrap resampling techniques, offering potential advantages over direct formula reversion which yields skewed distributions, making central metrics such as the formula constant distribution mean unsuitable for constant optimisation
In recent years, perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) have become a key concern in drinking water quality monitoring due to their persistence and environmental accumulation. These synthetic compounds are resistant to biological degradation and are increasingly found in drinking water. While current treatment methods exist, the required disposal of single-use materials is energy- and resource-intensive. Modern materials with high adsorption capacity and reusability through controlled PFAS release could offer a solution. Metallocene-based materials, particularly cobaltocenium—a stable aromatic cation—show strong affinity for surfactant-like PFAS and are promising candidates. This work investigated the covalent modification of porous architectures with cobaltocenium for PFAS adsorption. Anisotropic membranes and porous polystyrene-divinylbenzene particles were selected to ensure continuous adsorption. In the first part, cobaltocenium-containing block copolymers were synthesized and processed into membranes. Retention experiments confirmed high PFAS binding efficiency and applicability in heavy metal removal. The second part focused on maximizing adsorption and regeneration by anchoring cobaltocenium onto porous particles and testing PFAS uptake and release under static and flow conditions. Varying matrix parameters revealed key insights into adsorption mechanisms, high capacity, and excellent reusability. The results demonstrate the strong potential of cobaltocenium-based materials for sustainable PFAS removal in water treatment
