Transforming a rare event search into a not-so-rare event search in real-time with deep learning-based object detection
Deep learning-based object detection algorithms enable the simultaneous classification and localization of any number of objects in image data. Many of these algorithms are capable of operating in real-time on high resolution images, attributing to their widespread usage across many fields. We present an end-to-end object detection pipeline designed for rare event searches for the Migdal effect, at real-time speeds, using high-resolution image data from the scientific CMOS camera readout of the MIGDAL experiment. The Migdal effect in nuclear scattering, critical for sub-GeV dark matter searches, has yet to be experimentally confirmed, making its detection a primary goal of the MIGDAL experiment. The Migdal effect forms a composite rare event signal topology consisting of an electronic and nuclear recoil sharing the same vertex. Crucially, both recoil species are commonly observed in isolation in the MIGDAL experiment, enabling us to train YOLOv8, a state-of-the-art object detection algorithm, on real data. Topologies indicative of the Migdal effect can then be identified in science data via pairs of neighboring or overlapping electron and nuclear recoils. Applying selections to real data that retain 99.7% signal acceptance in simulations, we demonstrate our pipeline to reduce a sample of 20 million recorded images to fewer than 1000 frames, thereby transforming a rare search into a much more manageable search. More broadly, we discuss the applicability of using object detection to enable data-driven machine learning training for other rare event search applications such as neutrinoless double beta decay searches and experiments imaging exotic nuclear decays.Validerad;2025;Nivå 2;2025-04-22 (u5);Full text license: CC BY 4.0;Funder: For funding information, see: https://journals.aps.org/prd/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevD.111.072004#acknowledgements</p
Evolution of carbon fiber properties during repetitive recycling via pyrolysis and partial oxidation
The potential of recycling carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) as a sustainable solution for waste management is yet to be fully understood. This study reports on the evolution of mechanical, and chemical properties of reclaimed carbon fibers when recycled multiple times via pyrolysis and partial oxidation. The performed work aims at filling the knowledge gap related to repetitive recycling when moving towards a circular flow of resources. A recycling process existing at industrial scale is used to ensure the relevance and usefulness of the results in the current industry scene. Two sets of three identical model composites are recycled using distinct recycling parameters, and their properties are characterized at the end of each recycling cycle. Results show that recycling can lead to an increase in stiffness but can have a negative impact on strength of recovered fibers. Mechanical behaviour shows recovered fibers suitable for secondary applications with medium performance requirements after two recycling cycles. The findings highlight the importance of understanding the material properties evolution during recycling processes. This research contributes to the development of sustainable waste management strategies and a more environmentally friendly future.Validerad;2025;Nivå 1;2025-01-01 (signyg);Full text license: CC BY</p
Temperature and plastic strain dependent Chaboche model for 316 L used in simulation of cold pilgering
Cold pilgering is a complex forming process used to produce seamless tubes, posing significant challenges in material modeling due to its non-proportional loading history and extensive accumulated plastic strain. In this study, a temperature- and plastic strain-dependent Chaboche model for 316 L stainless steel was developed and calibrated. To simulate the complex loading conditions, unique alternating compression-compression tests were conducted, and the model parameters were optimized accordingly. The calibrated model was integrated into a thermo-mechanical finite element simulation of the cold pilgering process, resulting in improved accuracy in predicting stress-strain responses and yield stress evolution. Close agreement with experimental tensile tests of the final tube was demonstrated, illustrating the model’s capability to predict hardening behavior during cold pilgering. Valuable insights and a practical modeling approach for enhancing the simulation and optimization of cold pilgering processes are provided by this work.Validerad;2025;Nivå 2;2025-01-01 (hanlid);Funder: Swedish Steel Industry Graduate School; Alleima; Jernkontoret; Sandviken kommun;Full text license: CC BY 4.0;This article has previously appeared as a manuscript in a thesis.</p
The Price of a Better Catch : Valuing Fishing Improvements in Norrbotten through the Contingent Valuation and the Travel Cost Method
This study aimed to estimate the willingness to pay for improved fishing and the consumer surplus fishermen had at the Lule River in 2023. The study limited itself to examining only recreational fishermen to investigate the purpose. The contingent valuation method was applied to measure the willingness to pay for improved fishing, and the travel cost method was used to estimate the consumer surplus from the current fishing. A total of 429 responses were collected, of which 168 were used for the analysis. The study found a positive willingness to pay for improved fishing of, on average, approximately SEK 496. Variables that significantly impacted the willingness to pay were the frequency of visits, household members, age, education, income, and travel costs, all of which had a positive impact. The average consumer surplus per person was estimated to be approximately SEK 4,920.Samhällsekonomisk analys av frågeställningar kring omprövningen av vattenkraf
The Patient's experiences of Quality of Life with Type 2-diabetes : A literature study
Older people's experiences of occupational therapy interventions that promote social participation : A literature review
Social delaktighet prioriteras dock sällan i dagens arbetsterapipraxis.
People's experiences of living with an amputated leg : A literature review
Occupational therapists reasoning of Virtual Reality in forensic psychiatry : A qualitative interview study
Background: Individually adapted skills training is challenging to implement within forensic psychiatric settings due to restrictive environments and security limitations. These limitations have hindered the assessment of skills and affected patients’ reintegration into society. Virtual Reality (VR) may offer a safe and engaging environment for activity participation for both patients and clinicians. Research has shown that VR can be used for training various skills and as a motivational tool. However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding how VR can be utilized by occupational therapists in forensic psychiatric clinics. Purpose: To explore occupational therapists’ reasoning regarding the use of VR as an occupational therapy intervention for patients in forensic psychiatric care. Method: A qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with seven occupational therapists working at three forensic psychiatric clinics in Sweden. The data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Result: The analysis generated four categories reflecting occupational therapists’ reasoning about the implementation and use of VR as a therapeutic tool within forensic psychiatric care. These categories encompass the creation of an occupational therapy environment, future possibilities, perceived barriers and risks, and the potential healthpromoting effects of VR. Conclusion: The study indicates that VR is perceived as a potentially valuable occupational therapy tool in forensic psychiatry, with the ability to address environmental and security-related limitations and to promote rehabilitation through individualized and controlled settings. Safe and effective implementation requires organizational support, financial resources, and staff training. The findings also highlight the importance of person-centered care, clear guidelines, and continued research to optimize the use of VR in forensic psychiatric occupational therapy.
L1 use in the Swedish EFL classroom and what language policy it implies
This study, which was carried out in a northern town of Sweden, investigates the use of L1 in an EFL classroom, asking students in year 9 how they perceive and experience the language use in their classroom. It aims to answer whether the students’ views of the teaching and learning environment could suggest an existing language policy for the specific EFL classroom. 34 students participated in the study which collected data through a mixed method approach. A questionnaire was distributed to all students and four of the students were asked in-depth questions through semi- structured interviews. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were used when analyzing the data. The results of the study reveal an English-mainly policy where no languages are banned but English opted for, that students would prefer more L1 to be used in the classroom and that the language hierarchy of the Swedish society is reflected within the classroom. The practice, as viewed by the students, is not supported by previous research which argues that our complete linguistic repertoire should be activated when learning a new language. The findings of this study emphasize the importance that teachers motivate all students to use their preferred language, namely their L1, when learning English.
Gen-JEMA: enhanced explainability using generative joint embedding multimodal alignment for monitoring directed energy deposition
This work introduces Gen-JEMA, a generative approach based on joint embedding with multimodal alignment (JEMA), to enhance feature extraction in the embedding space and improve the explainability of its predictions. Gen-JEMA addresses these challenges by leveraging multimodal data, including multi-view images and metadata such as process parameters, to learn transferable semantic representations. Gen-JEMA enables more explainable and enriched predictions by learning a decoder from the embedding. This novel co-learning framework, tailored for directed energy deposition (DED), integrates multiple data sources to learn a unified data representation and predict melt pool images from the primary sensor. The proposed approach enables real-time process monitoring using only the primary modality, simplifying hardware requirements and reducing computational overhead. The effectiveness of Gen-JEMA for DED process monitoring was evaluated, focusing on its generalization to downstream tasks such as melt pool geometry prediction and the generation of external melt pool representations using off-axis sensor data. To generate these external representations, autoencoder (AE) and variational autoencoder (VAE) architectures were optimized using Bayesian optimization. The AE outperformed other approaches achieving a 38% improvement in melt pool geometry prediction compared to the baseline and 88% in data generation compared with the VAE. The proposed framework establishes the foundation for integrating multisensor data with metadata through a generative approach, enabling various downstream tasks within the DED domain and achieving a small embedding, allowing efficient process control based on model predictions and embeddings.
