Fluorine-Free Bis(glycolato)borate Anion-Based Salts and Electrolytes: Structures, Properties, and Lithium Compatibility
A number of bis(glycolato)borate (BGB) anion-based salts, comprising Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ cations, has been synthesized and characterized. Fluorine-free electrolytes based on LiBGB and organic solvents, such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), triethyl phosphate (TEP), and trimethyl phosphate (TMP) have been created and their transport properties, thermal and electrochemical stabilities, and lithium compatibility examined. The ionic conductivities of the 1 M LiBGB-TEP and 1 M LiBGB-TMP electrolytes are ca. 2-3 times lower than for the 1 M LiBGB-DMSO electrolytes (2.05, 2.65 vs. 5.70 mS cm-1 at 25 °C), and as compared to the state-of-the-art 1 M lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) in EC:DEC (EC:DEC=1:1 in vol., LP40) they display lower ionic conductivities, but the formers’ redox stability on aluminum (Al) and glassy carbon electrodes are much better. Concentrated (>1 M) LiBGB-DMSO electrolytes display enhanced redox stability, but worse Al passivation. Among the electrolytes, 1 M LiBGB-TMP achieves the best long-term stability over 300 h at 0.1 mA/cm2 for Li plating-stripping while the Li compatibility needs to be further improved. Overall, this study introduces a family of versatile fluorine-free orthoborate salts and electrolytes for mono- and divalent batteries, and a fundamental understanding of their transport and electrochemical properties, aiming towards battery applications.Validerad;2025;Nivå 2;2025-06-30 (u2);For funding information, see: https://doi.org/10.1002/batt.202400672Full text: CC BY-NC-ND license;</p
Designing Privacy : Biophilic Furniture for Focused Work in the Spaces Between Home and Office
This master’s thesis was carried out during the spring of 2025 as the final part of the Master of Science in Industrial Design Engineering program at Luleå University of Technology, with a specialisation in product development. The project was conducted in collaboration with the Swedish furniture company Green Furniture Concept and aims to develop a concept that supports and encourages work in public environments. The background of the project is based on observations of a growing trend, as more and more people are working from places outside the traditional office, such as shopping centres, airports, and co-working spaces. While it can be debated whether work should be carried out in traditional offices or not, the ongoing development clearly shows that flexible ways of working are becoming increasingly common, and in some cases, necessary. The goal has therefore been to create a furniture solution that responds to these changing needs without compromising on comfort, functionality, or aesthetics. For Green Furniture Concept, it is essential to create furniture that is not only functional but also contributes to well-being by bringing nature into public indoor spaces. With this vision as a foundation, the project has focused on integrating biophilic design, using form, materials, and user experience to encourage a closer connection between people and nature. The project has followed an iterative process based on the methodology of an industrial design engineer, divided into four main phases. It began with user studies in relevant environments, where both qualitative and quantitative data formed the basis for identifying key needs. This was followed by a creative phase in which several design concepts were developed. Three of these were presented to Green Furniture Concept, one of which was selected for further development. The chosen concept was then tested in prototype form with users to optimise the experience and strengthen the sense of privacy and comfort. The result is a modular furniture system that can be configured in different ways depending on location and client needs. The concept promotes circular design through recyclable materials, interchangeable modules, and a thoughtful construction. By including greenery and natural materials, the solution supports not only sustainability but also health, focus, and reduced stress, aligning with biophilic principles and Green Furniture Concept’s vision of creating sustainable, vibrant, and nature-connected public spaces.
This study examined the emotional engagement of supporters of an SHL team in Norrland. The aim was to explore how the sense of community and belonging was created and maintained, what social norms and roles governed the supporter behaviour in the stands, and what factors may contribute to the emergence of aggressive behaviour among some supporters. Through qualitative interviews with eight active standing supporters, both men and women of different ages and different social backgrounds, insights have been gathered about how community, loyalty and emotions were formed within the supporter culture. The theoretical framework consisted of an interactionist perspective, social identity, interaction rituals, an emotion theoretical approach and a dramaturgical perspective. These perspectives together illuminated how emotions, roles, and social rituals interacted in the creation of collective identities. The results showed that supportership was far more than just a hobby, it was a lifestyle that permeates everyday life and shapes the individual's identity and belonging. The community in the stands was described as inclusive and safe, where traditional norms were erased. Standing room became a place for emotional empathy, expression, belonging and community. The participants expressed strong feelings of belonging, where shared rituals, songs and symbols reinforced the experience of being part of something bigger. The supportership meant not only joy, but also frustration and disappointment shared in the group. The study highlighted how strong emotions, shared experiences and joint actions within the supporter culture created a powerful community, security and belonging among the supporters. The supporter culture thus functioned as a place for identity creation, emotional security, and community in both good and tough times
This bachelor’s thesis explores how graphic design can be used to increase reading engagement among young readers aged 13–15. The project is based on a combination of literature review, surveys, historical analysis, and practical design experimentation, with the goal of creating an alternative to traditional youth literature through a more visual, tactile, and interactive book format. This strategy is inspired by design theories on experience-driven storytelling (e.g. Norman, 2013), where physical interaction is viewed as a catalyst for engagement. The research shows that while many young people rarely read in their spare time (Vinterek et al. 2022), their interest in stories remains, particularly through other media such as games, films, and series. Survey responses indicate that illustrations, maps, and adventurous content increase engagement, while many also express a need for more space for creativity and less pressure from school and adult expectations. The result of the project is a hand bound book titled “Skuggväktarna” (Shadow guardians), in which the reader encounters a nonlinear narrative filled with clues, margin runes, fold-out flaps, diary entries, and a decoding wheel (Volvelle). The book is produced using various materials to enhance the reading experience through physical interaction. It is housed in a custom-designed box with envelopes containing the Volvelle and transparent map layers printed on Vellum paper. The conclusion is that graphic design can serve as a bridge between young people’s digital media habits and the slower, more immersive pace of analog storytelling. By combining narrative, material, and visual design, the project demonstrates how a book can be experienced and not just simply read
Fabrication of spherical Ti-V-Zr-Nb-Mo-Hf-Ta-W refractory high-entropy alloy by a combination of spark plasma sintering, cryogenic grinding, and plasma centrifugal atomization
In this study, plasma-assisted centrifugal atomization was used to produce spherical powders of a refractory high-entropy alloy (R-HEA) with particle sizes within 50–250 µm, a median particle size by weight of 163 µm, and average chemical composition of Ti12V15Zr5Nb15Mo17Hf5Ta16W15. The powdered feedstock material for the atomization process was produced by a combination of partial solid-state consolidation of elemental powders by spark plasma sintering and cryogenic grinding, thereby eliminating the need for complex hydrogenation-dehydrogenation pulverization operations. The resulting spherical powder with particle sizes within 150–180 µm consisted of a main BCC-structured solid solution incorporating all principal elements, and trace amounts of FCC-structured HfxZr1-xN precipitates. The microindentation hardness of the centrifugally atomized spherical powder was as high as 7.0 ± 0.3 GPa, approximately 30 % higher than that of previously reported R-HEAs with similar compositions and larger atomic size mismatch. The enhanced mechanical performance was attributed to the refined dendritic microstructure, with primary dendrite arms and interdendritic spacing of around 2 µm and 0.3 µm in thickness, respectively. These results suggested that high configurational entropy alone was not the cause for the superior mechanical properties of HEAs, and demonstrated that the grain boundary strengthening through microstructure refinement was a powerful tool to achieve outstandingly high hardness for such single-phased metallic alloys. The reported processing route showed promising potential for the pilot- and large-scale fabrication of spherical powders of R-HEAs for additive manufacturing purposes such as electron beam melting (EBM), laser metal deposition (LMD), and laser cladding (LC). Assessing the Influence of PEEK on Tribocorrosion in Metal on Polymer Total Joint Replacement
Tribocorrosion studies have primarily focused on hard-on-hard articulations, with limited research on metal-on-polymer (MoP) configurations despite their clinical relevance. This study investigates the tribocorrosion behaviour of cobalt-chromium (CoCr) alloy against 3D-printed polyetheretherketone (PEEK), conventionally manufactured PEEK, and ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), with UHMWPE as the reference material. Tests were conducted using a reciprocating tribometer under open circuit and potentiostatic conditions in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and bovine calf serum, with in-situ electrochemical monitoring. The results demonstrated that the presence of serum significantly decreased the charge transfer of the CoCr surface, hence decreasing electrochemical degradation when compared to PBS lubrication. The manufacturing methods for PEEK resulted in different surface characteristics, leading to variations in tribocorrosion behaviour; however, polishing to achieve homogeneous roughness minimized these differences. Furthermore, CoCr exhibited significantly higher charge transfer when slid against all tested PEEKs compared with UHMWPE (at least two-fold higher), suggesting that a PEEK-CoCr tribocouple results in an increase of tribocorrosion and a greater potential for metal ion release than a UHMWPE-CoCr tribocouple.Validerad;2025;Nivå 2;2025-07-18 (u2);Full text: CC BY license;</p
Search for the Rare Decay D0 → μ + μ − in Proton-Proton Collisions at √ = 13.6 TeV
A search for the rare decay 0→+− is reported using proton-proton collision events at √ =13.6 TeV collected by the CMS detector in 2022–2023, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 64.5 fb−1. This is the first analysis to use a newly developed inclusive dimuon trigger, expanding the scope of the CMS flavor physics program. The search uses 0 mesons obtained from *+→0+ decays. No significant excess is observed. A limit on the branching fraction of ℬ(0→+−)<2.4×10−9 at 95% confidence level is set. This is the most stringent upper limit set on any flavor changing neutral current decay in the charm sector.Godkänd;2025;Nivå 0;2025-10-28 (u2);Full text: CC BY License; For funding information, see: https://doi.org/10.1103/zc76-rgcp</p
Autonomous Drilling and the Idea of Next-Generation Deep Mineral Exploration
Remote drilling technologies play a crucial role in automating both underground and open-pit hard rock mining operations. These technologies enhance efficiency and, most importantly, improve safety in the mining sector. Autonomous drilling rigs can navigate to pre-determined positions and utilize the appropriate parameters to drill boreholes effectively. This article explores various aspects of automation, including the integration of advanced data collection methods that monitor the drilling parameters and facilitate the creation of 3D models of rock hardness. The shift toward machine automation involves transitioning from human-operated machines to systems powered by artificial intelligence, which are capable of making real-time decisions. Navigating underground environments presents unique challenges, as traditional RF-based localization systems often fail in these settings. New solutions, such as constant localization and mapping techniques like SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping), provide innovative methods for navigating mines, particularly in uncharted territories. The development of robotic exploration rigs equipped with modules that can operate autonomously in hazardous areas has the potential to revolutionize mineral exploration in underground mines. This article also discusses solutions aimed at validating and improving existing methods by optimizing drilling strategies to ensure accuracy, enhance efficiency, and ensure safety. These topics are explored in the context of the Horizon Europe-funded PERSEPHONE project, which seeks to deliver fully autonomous, sensor-integrated robotic systems for deep mineral exploration in challenging underground environments.Validerad;2025;Nivå 2;2025-08-05 (u4);Funder: Polish Ministry of Science (B_RPB_BAD_EXP_BAM—8253050501);Fulltext license: CC BYPERSEPHON
