When empathy runs out: Experiences of Compassion Fatigue among nurses : A literature review

No full text

Microplastics and tyre wear particles in urban runoff from different urban surfaces

No full text
Urban runoff is an important conveyor of microplastics (MPs) and tyre wear particles (TWP) to receiving waters. However, knowledge of contributions by surfaces within land use type/activities is currently limited. To address this knowledge gap, runoff samples were collected simultaneously during three rainfall events in October and November 2020 at three locations in Luleå, Sweden, with different urban surfaces (parking lot, road and roof). The occurrence of MPs (by number and estimated mass) and TWP (mass) were determined using μ-FTIR and Pyr-GC/MS, respectively. MPs and TWP were found at all sites in all events, with large variations between events and sites. The highest concentrations of MPs (number) and TWP were found in road runoff followed by parking lot runoff and roof runoff. The mass concentrations of MPs did not follow the same pattern and were generally highest at the parking lot, highlighting the importance of reporting data as both mass and particle numbers to derive a complete overview of MPs and TWP behaviour. Polypropylene, polyethylene, and polyester accounted, on average, for 99 % of MP polymers (by mass and number) at all sites with common sources, including traffic (vehicle wear and tear) and littering. MPs in the <75 μm fraction contributed >50 % of the total number of MPs in parking lot runoff, >58 % in roof runoff and > 90 % in road runoff.Validerad;2025;Nivå 2;2025-05-12 (u5);Full text license: CC BY 4.0;Funder: FanpLESStic Sea EU Baltic Interreg (R092);</p

No full text
This thesis has the goal to create an efficient material flow at Lindab. To succeed inthis endeavor relevant they’re within LEAN production, material flow and safety stockhave been researched. During this thesis interviews with staff have been conducted toget a better understanding of how they operate today. Statistical data have also beengathered and processed in Microsoft Excel. From the data gathered there were several areas where the material flow could beimproved. These areas include a non-standardized ordering system to truck drivers fromthe production line, the placement of the inbound material, not enough space for allmaterial and potential to expand the use of automated guided vehicles. This resulted in the proposal to standardize the ordering process, two differentproposals for layout changes and a proposal for where all materials should be placedwhich would result in a reduction of manual truck driving by roughly 22,4 km/weak.This includes material placement to simplify the use of automated guided vehicles. These proposals would improve the material flow at Lindab while some of the differentideas and principles can be used at other companies.

Experimental investigation of coal bottom ash concrete mechanical properties and development of novel swarm optimized tree-based explainable models

No full text
The thermal power plants generate a significant amount of coal bottom ash (CBA), which poses environmental hazards. Effective utilization of CBA is essential to mitigate its adverse environmental impacts. In this study, the feasibility of using CBA-from two coal-fired power plants in Punjab, Pakistan, namely Sahiwal (SWL) and Sheikhupura (SKP)-as a partial sand replacement in concrete was investigated to promote sustainable concrete production. A series of concrete mixtures and experiments were conducted, including evaluations of Flexural Strength (FS) and Split Tensile Strength (SPT) at curing ages of 7, 28, and 90 days for M25 and M35 grade concrete. To enhance predictive capabilities, eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LGBM) models optimized using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) were employed to accurately predict the FS and SPT of CBA-based concrete. In addition to experimental data, previously published datasets were incorporated to improve model robustness. Experimental results indicated that concrete incorporating SWL-CBA achieved FS and SPT values comparable to control mixes at 28 and 90 days for M25 and M35 grades when CBA replaced 25 % and 50 % of sand, respectively. However, SKP-CBA mixes consistently showed lower strength performance. The PSO-optimized XGBoost and LGBM models exhibited excellent predictive performance, with R² values exceeding 0.98 during training and reaching 0.96 during testing. Furthermore, SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis was used to interpret the PSO-LGBM model, revealing that curing age, the specific gravity (SG) of CBA, sand/cement ratio, and CBA, and curing age, cement content, water and CBA were the most influential features affecting FS and SPT, respectively. The study findings support the recommendation of using higher SG CBA as a sustainable partial sand replacement, contributing to natural sand conservation, while also highlighting the effectiveness of machine learning approaches in accurately modeling and optimizing concrete performance.Validerad;2025;Nivå 2;2025-05-21 (u4);Funding information, see link: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2214509525005133?via%3Dihub#ack0005;Fulltext license: CC BY</p

Structures and Processes for Safety Culture? Perspectives from Safety Leaders in the Swedish Construction Industry

No full text
This article investigates the understanding and manifestation of safety culture within the Swedish construction industry. Specifically, through 20 interviews with safety leaders, this study explores the connection between safety culture and structures and processes on construction worksites. The theoretical framework draws on different perspectives on organisational culture, in general, and safety culture, in particular. The results highlight the importance that is placed on management and leadership in developing safety culture, with leaders setting examples and being actively involved in safety practices. Safety regulations are seen as crucial tools for change, influencing safety culture significantly. The size of the company and characteristics of employees, including challenges posed by subcontractors and language barriers, also impact safety culture. Safety training is essential for directing behaviours towards a good safety culture, and housekeeping is identified as an indicator of safety culture. In the discussion, the matter of understanding safety culture in relation to specific structures and processes on construction worksites is analysed, problematised and connected to prevailing perspectives within safety culture research.Validerad;2025;Nivå 1;2025-05-21 (u2);Full text: CC BY license;Funder: Afa Insurance, (Grant number 190061);</p

Measurement of the inclusive WZ production cross section in pp collisions at √s = 13.6 TeV

No full text
The inclusive WZ production cross section is measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13.6 TeV, using data collected during 2022 with the CMS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34.7 fb−1. The measurement uses multileptonic final states and a simultaneous likelihood fit to the number of events in four different lepton flavour categories: eee, eeμ, μμe, and μμμ. The selection is optimized to minimize the number of background events, and relies on an efficient prompt lepton discrimination strategy. The WZ production cross section is measured in a phase space defined within a 30 GeV window around the Z boson mass, as σtotal (pp → WZ) = 55.2 ± 1.2 (stat) ± 1.2 (syst) ± 0.8 (lumi) ± 0.3 (theo) pb. In addition, the cross section is measured in a fiducial phase space closer to the detector-level requirements. All the measurements presented in this paper are in agreement with standard model predictions.Godkänd;2025;Nivå 0;2025-05-26 (u2);Full text: CC BY license; For funding information, see: https://doi.org/10.1007/JHEP04(2025)115</p

Effective Communication and Leadership in Large-Scale Infrastructure Projects : Managing People, Conflicts, and Collaboration

No full text
Large- scale infrastructure projects are often marked by complexity, long timeframes, and the involvement of multiple stakeholders. These factors increase the risk of conflict, which frequently stems not from technical issues, but from unclear communication, role ambiguity, and conflicting interests. The study explores how conflicts emerge, develop, and are manged in such projects, with a focus on communication structures, leadership practices, and the role of collaborative models like partnering and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). The aim is to identify key success factors for conflict management and propose practical recommendations to foster trust-based collaboration. The research was conducted as qualitative case study, based on literature review and five semi-structured interviews with professionals from publicly funded Swedish infrastructure projects. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns in how conflicts are perceived and handled in practice. Findings highlight the importance of early dialogue, emotional intelligence in leadership, and integrated collaboration models. When communication is transparent, and leadership is responsive conflicts can be addressed constructively. The study concludes that effective conflict management required a combination of structural clarity, cultural awareness, and interpersonal competence, supported by a proactive and reflective project environment.

No full text
