[EN] The work carried out in this Doctoral Thesis has focused on the design, synthesis and characterisation of new multicomponent materials based on MWW-type zeolite sheets and metal oxide subdomains, which have made it possible to study and improve the properties of the components individually and generate new properties. To this end, three different synthesis routes have been developed and optimised, analysing how each method affects both the composition and the properties of the final materials. In addition, the catalytic activity of the previously prepared materials has been evaluated, taking into account their Lewis and Brönsted acid and base properties. Specifically, in Chapter 3, the synthesis and characterisation of multicomponent materials based on MWW zeolite sheets and MgAlCe hydrotalcite units were carried out following different preparation routes. Methods (I) and (II) involved the in situ coprecipitation of MgAlCe hydrotalcite in the presence of MCM-22 zeolite, while method (III) involved a process of swelling and intercalation of MWW-type sheets with previously synthesised hydrotalcites, thus evaluating different synthesis conditions and their influence on the properties of the prepared materials. Likewise, the textural, physicochemical and acid-base properties of the materials obtained were studied. In addition, a comparative study of the different preparation methods was carried out, analysing the differences and similarities in the final properties of the materials. On the other hand, in Chapter 4, to further the study of the synthesis of new multicomponent materials, different materials based on MWW zeolite sheets and MgAl hydrotalcite subdomains were prepared and characterised using the synthetic routes already optimised in the previous chapter. In addition, the catalytic behaviour of the different multicomponent materials prepared in the oxidation reaction of glucose to formic acid has been studied. The materials prepared using method (II) exhibited the best catalytic properties, especially the MWW@LDH(MgAl)-in situ-40 material. This study has demonstrated that the synthesis method plays a crucial role in the final properties of multicomponent materials, as well as in their catalytic activity, opening up new possibilities for the a priori design of multicomponent and multifunctional materials with high reactivity.Esteban-Barrera, Cristina (2025). L'estudi analitza i caracteritza remolins i estructures coherents, incloent-hi streaks i estructures intenses d'esforços de Reynolds. [EN] Different turbulent channel flows at diverse friction Reynolds numbers are studied to elucidate the changes in their turbulent scale organisation and energy transfer originating from the mean shear. Channel flows represent the simplest wall-bounded flow, providing a simplified model of the turbulence dynamics in much more complex wall-bounded geometries. In this study, we focus on Poiseuille flows, Couette flows and combined configurations. On the one hand, a Poiseuille channel flow is a pressure-driven flow in which the fluid moves between parallel walls due to a pressure gradient. On the other hand, a Couette channel flow is a shear-driven flow in which the fluid moves due to the relative movement of one wall to the other with no pressure gradient involved. The combined configurations contain both mechanisms and cover a stepped transition from a pure Poiseuille flow to a pure Couette flow. The physics of both flows is resolved using Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) at low to moderate Reynolds friction numbers, providing information at all turbulent scales. The study analyses and characterises eddies and coherent structures, including streaks and intense Reynolds stress structures. Geometrical parameters, turbulent intensity, spatial location and other relevant parameters are calculated and compared among channel flow configurations using probabilistic plots and trends. In this thesis, we elucidate that the mean shear can create time-averaged largescale structures, in the form of streaks and rolls, in pure Couette and combined configurations with enough shear contribution. Large-scale structures must be present in order to produce relevant channel statistics; therefore, the minimum domain spanwise size is limited by them. The generation of these large-scale structures is linked to a self-sustaining process, which is sensitive to external forces such as stable stratification. Indeed, we explain that relatively small stratification is able to break this self-sustaining process and consequently prevents the growth of large-scale structures. Furthermore, these large-scale structures produce a reallocation of instantaneous coherent structures along the spanwise direction. Curiously enough, these instantaneous streaks and bursts remain self-similar in any configuration, independently of the presence of large-scale structures, so their dimensional ratios do not differ. Last but not least, when observing passive thermal Couette flows, similar time-averaged large-scale structures appear in the form of cold and hot temperature regions. The present study was developed at the Instituto Universitario de Investigación de Matemática Pura y Aplicada (IUMPA) of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). Metaheuristic Optimization for the Sustainable and Resilient Design of Hybrid and Composite Frame Building Structures with Advanced Integrated Modeling

[EN] Climate change and the rapid expansion of urban environments have intensified the construction sector's environmental impact, accounting for nearly 37% of global energy-related CO¿ emissions and more than one-third of total energy consumption worldwide. Improving the sustainability and resilience of building structures has thus become a critical priority, fully aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This doctoral thesis addresses this challenge by developing an optimization-based design framework that delivers innovative, sustainable, and resilient solutions for frame-building structures. The main objective of this research is to create and validate advanced methodologies that integrate hybrid and composite structural typologies with advanced optimization strategies, supported by high-fidelity structural modeling. To achieve this, the thesis formulates optimization problems that simultaneously account for economic, environmental, constructability, durability, and safety criteria, while incorporating often-overlooked features such as soil-structure interaction, robustness against progressive collapse, and life-cycle environmental performance. Specific objectives include evaluating advanced metaheuristic and metamodel-assisted optimization techniques, quantifying the risks of oversimplified structural models, integrating resilience as a design constraint, assessing the sustainability benefits of hybrid and composite typologies, exploring strategies for multi-objective optimization, and comparing early-stage and life-cycle approaches. The results demonstrate that advanced metaheuristic and metamodel-assisted strategies (e.g., BBO-CINS, Kriging-based approaches, and Scalarized Pareto Optimization) clearly outperform traditional algorithms, achieving up to 90% reductions in computational cost in single-objective settings and improving Pareto front quality by as much as 140% in multi-objective problems. Equally important, the research highlights the risks of oversimplifying structural models. Neglecting critical aspects such as soil-structure interaction or secondary components like slabs and walls can significantly distort structural design, leading not only to inaccurate safety assessments (e.g., underestimating collapse resistance), but also to higher long-term environmental impacts due to accelerated deterioration and increased maintenance demands. These findings underscore the need for holistic modeling in optimization frameworks. Furthermore, when introduced as a constraint rather than a competing objective, resilience-based design proved capable of enhancing robustness against progressive collapse without compromising sustainability, with the inclusion of secondary elements reducing the environmental burden of robust design by around 11%. At the component scale, the optimization of welded steel girders validated the benefits of hybridization and tapered geometries, culminating in the Transversely Hybrid Variable Section (THVS) typology, which reduced manufacturing costs by up to 70% compared to conventional girders. When integrated into composite RC-THVS frames, this typology delivered further sustainability gains, achieving reductions of 16% in emissions and 11% in embodied energy at the early design stage, and up to 30% in life-cycle emissions, compared to traditional RC structural systems. Incorporating slabs and infill walls amplified these results, lowering life-cycle impacts by as much as 42% relative to bare-frame configurations. [EN] This master's thesis develops an architectural project for a senior residence located in the Poblats Marítims neighborhood. The project proposes a series of spatial strategies aimed at improving the quality of life of the residents through a programmatic layout that fosters both privacy and social interaction. The design is structured around grouping scales, allowing for the creation of small communities within the residence, adapted to different levels of activity and social engagement. The connection between the building and its urban surroundings is prioritized, breaking away from the traditional concept of the residence as an isolated space. A southwest orientation, combined with solar protection systems, allows for efficient use of sunlight and heat according to the season. The proposal includes through-spaces to facilitate cross ventilation and outdoor areas linked to each housing unit, as well as common spaces adaptable to seasonal changes. Shared areas are organized across four levels of scale, from general spaces for all residents to intimate areas shared by only two or three people.Vidal Mullor, A. (2025). [EN]This thesis investigates the thermal behavior of the Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion (EB-PBF) process through a finite element method simulation performed in the ANSYS framework. The work focuses on developing a methodology for studying the thermal behavior of different beam scan strategies, their modelization with the aim of improving thermal management during the production of the parts. A transient thermal model was implemented using Mechanical APDL scripting, supported by MATLAB code generation and executed on the NSC Sigma supercomputer to handle the high computational demand. The model strategy incorporates a two-dimensional Gaussian distribution for the electron beam, conduction and radiation as heat transfer mechanisms and temperature dependent material properties for stainless steel alloys. A mesh sensitivity analysis was performed to ensure accuracy on the obtained results balanced with the computational cost. The layer-by-layer build process was replicated by means of the element birth-and-death technique. The analysis focused on thermal histories recorded through virtual pyrometers during the preheating, melting, and post-heating stages. Validation against experimental data indicated some consistency, critical aspects regarding the modelization and some future improvements that need to be done to achieve greater accuracy of the process are also remarked. The outcomes demonstrate that the adopted methodology can reliably capture the thermal behavior of the EB-PBF process. In addition, the results underline the influence of scan strategy choice in maintaining thermal stability, which directly impacts the final part quality. Mira Kouklin, R. [EN] Delottococcus aberiae, or "Cotonet de les Valls," is an invasive pest responsible for substantial yield losses in citrus crops across the Mediterranean region of Spain. This study reports developing and validating a novel portable optoelectronic nose that integrates optical and electrochemical sensors for early pest detection in the field. The system demonstrated selectivity towards D. aberiae under both controlled and field conditions. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed clear separation between infested and pest-free samples, and the ability to distinguish D. aberiae from other pests such as Bemisia tabaci. Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) models achieved perfect classification metrics (accuracy, precision, recall = 1.000) under in vitro conditions and high accuracy in field trials, even at early infestation levels. Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression models yielded R2 values above 0.95 for predicting incidence and over 0.91 for severity when using a reduced 8-sensor array, significantly simplifying the system without compromising performance. These results highlight the robustness, accuracy, and field applicability of the optoelectronic system as an effective decision-support tool in integrated pest management programs. This work was funded by Generalitat Valenciana through the Agencia Valenciana de Innovacion cofunded with FEDER funds (INNEST/2021/108) ; and the AGROALNEXT program, funded by the MCIN, the European Union (Next Generation PRTR-C17.I1) , and the Generalitat Valenciana (EUAGROALNEXT/2022/065) .Sánchez-Artero, S.;Montesinos, C.;Amoros, P.;Ros-Lis, JV. Multivariate environmental and social life cycle assessment of circular recycled-plastic voided slabs for data-driven sustainable construction

    No full text
[EN] The construction sector is a major contributor to climate change and resource depletion, responsible for over 36 % of global final energy use and nearly half of all raw material consumption. Addressing structural systems' environmental and social sustainability is a critical challenge for the transition toward a circular and low-carbon built environment. Among structural elements, floor slabs are particularly critical due to their intensive use of concrete and steel. This study develops an integrated, data-driven framework that combines multivariate structural modeling with environmental and social life cycle assessment (E-LCA and S-LCA), explicitly describing the methodological approach before results are introduced. Leveraging empirical data from 67 real buildings, the framework generates robust pre-dimensioning guidelines that support early-stage decision-making in sustainable construction. Results demonstrate substantial material and impact reductions: concrete and steel use decrease by 23¿33 % and up to 29 %, respectively, leading to average endpoint environmental impact reductions of 25 % and global warming potential decreases of 24 %, reaching 30 % for six-meter spans. S-LCA highlights social risk reductions up to 20 % in the Workers and Local Community categories, reflecting safer and more socially responsible construction practices. By integrating advanced multivariate modeling with comprehensive life cycle assessment, this research delivers a decision-oriented tool that accelerates the adoption of circular, low-carbon construction systems. The revised abstract also highlights the policy and management implications: the findings provide actionable insights for engineers, regulators, and policymakers, supporting the development of building codes, resource-efficient design guidelines, and climate-aligned strategies for the construction sector. Ultimately, this work promotes a resilient and sustainable built environment, advancing circular economy principles and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).Grant PID2023-150003OB-I00 funded by MICIU/AEI/10.130 39/501100011033 and by ERDF/EU".Sánchez-Garrido, AJ.;Navarro -Martinez, Ignacio Javier;Yepes, V. Cracking of hydrotreated waste fats and oils over zeolites for renewable propene production. Part II: Cracking of Hydrotreated & isomerized paraffinic products derived from the Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) process

[EN] In this work, we explore the production of light olefins by cracking the hydrotreated and isomerized paraffinic products obtained from the Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) Process. Using isomerized paraffins instead of normal paraffins derived from Hydrotreated Vegetable Oils (HVO) as cracking feedstock may enhance both cracking activity and light olefin selectivity. This possibility is therefore systematically investigated. Zeolitic catalysts with customized micropore size, topology, hierarchical porosity, and framework composition have been employed to optimize the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of both primary and secondary reactions. A combined optimization of catalysts and process conditions enabled light olefin yields of 60¿65 wt%, with 30¿35 wt% propylene, in a once-through fixed-bed reactor employing ZSM-12, hierarchical ZSM-5, and hierarchical IM-5 as cracking catalysts. Further process refinement, including recycling of the C5 + fraction, significantly enhanced performance, yielding up to 89¿90 wt% light olefins and 46¿48 wt% propylene. Stability tests identified hierarchical ZSM-5 as the most effective zeolite, maintaining high activity and selectivity during extended operations. Finally, a comparison between the results from HVO cracking and those obtained in the present study confirms that ZSM-5 zeolite remains the most active, selective, and stable catalyst for both types of feedstocks. This highlights the versatility of the proposed catalytic strategy for processing a broad range of biogenic feedstocks. The authors would like to thank Neste for financial support.
