    Appraising Evidence to Confront Whiteness

    No full text
This chapter traces the creation of a critical appraisal tool developed to identify and challenge racial bias in research. Written from the standpoint of a racialised health librarian, it confronts how neutrality and objectivity have been used to obscure whiteness and uphold inequities in evidence-based practice. It moves between personal experience and professional critique, showing how racial bias operates through the systems and tools librarians are taught to trust. The chapter also examines the emotional and political labour of doing antiracist work within professions that value civility over courage. By reimagining critical appraisal as an act of resistance, it calls on librarians and researchers to look beyond compliance and engage with equity as a practice, one that asks whose knowledge counts, who is missing, and what it means to act when neutrality is no longer an option
