Assessing the Impact of Wear on the Recordability of Linear Enamel Hypoplasia: A Quantitative Approach.

    Get PDF
peer reviewed[en] OBJECTIVES: This study proposes a standardized, empirically grounded framework for assessing the recordability of linear enamel hypoplasia (LEH) in archeological dental samples. Despite the frequent use of LEH as a skeletal stress indicator, there is no consensus on whether and how to account for dental wear in recording protocols. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed the permanent right teeth of 497 medieval and early modern individuals to assess how dental wear affects the visibility and diagnostic utility of hypoplastic defects across different crown regions. For a given tooth, we assessed if there is a region that tends to be (1) less (or more) recordable than others, (2) less (or more) frequently affected by LEH than others, and (3) less (or more) informative with respect to the presence or absence of LEH than others. RESULTS: The occlusal third was significantly less recordable and rarely provides additional data beyond the middle and cervical thirds. Excluding the occlusal third has minimal effect on overall LEH prevalence, while omitting the middle or cervical thirds leads to marked underestimation. DISCUSSION: These results highlight the importance of incorporating wear-based inclusion criteria into LEH recording protocols. We recommend including only teeth with dental wear affecting less than half of the crown. These findings support the development of standardized inclusion criteria based on crown wear to enhance the consistency and comparability of data on enamel hypoplastic defects across studies and populations

Managing subcontractors in a context of labour shortages: the complex role of local managers

    No full text

Multiperiod stochastic optimization with machine learning for dynamic home healthcare routing

    No full text
editorial reviewedHome healthcare (HHC) is gaining popularity as a means of alleviating pressure on healthcare systems and improving patient well-being. However, effective HHC operations require optimized resource utilization, a challenge complicated by inherent uncertainty and dynamism. Although deterministic variants of the home healthcare routing and scheduling problem have been extensively studied, this is not the case of stochastic and dynamic versions. Aiming to address this gap, our work analyzes the problem of a home healthcare provider (HHCP) making daily decisions regarding the acceptance of new patient requests that arrive dynamically over the planning horizon. The HHCP also has to assign the first visit of each accepted patient to a day. It is assumed that every patient needs at least one visit and a specific periodicity of care, but the total number of visits that a patient will effectively require is stochastic. However, the HHCP must commit to serving accepted patients for their total number of visits. Moreover, the HHCP creates routes for the available caregivers in order to cover the visits planned for the current day. The problem is modeled as a Markov decision process. We will outline a solution approach that integrates machine learning techniques with traditional combinatorial optimization algorithms. This hybrid approach aims to effectively tackle the stochasticity inherent in the patients arrival process and care duration

Degradation preserved as spectral shifts: FTIR analysis of experimentally degraded adhesives

    Get PDF
editorial reviewedThis study evaluates the potential of Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) to detect and interpret chemical changes that occur in resin-beeswax adhesives resulting from short-term burial in diverse depositional environments. Within a controlled experimental framework, spruce resin and beeswax admixtures adhered to flint flakes were buried for three years under varying conditions, including sand, clay and loess sediments in both open-air and cave settings. They were then subsequently analyzed using FTIR. The resulting spectra reveal subtle but consistent chemical transformations such as oxidation and matrix-related alterations, which differentiate degraded adhesives from their pristine counterparts. The findings highlight FTIR’s sensitivity to post-depositional degradation patterns and its ability to identify transformation processes preserved as spectral shifts. These results have direct implications for archaeological residue analysis, demonstrating that environmental exposure leaves diagnostic spectral signatures that can inform on both the composition and taphonomic history of hafting adhesives. This work contributes to a growing methodological foundation for the identification and interpretation of ancient residues with FTIR, emphasizing the value of experimental studies in archaeological science

The Walloon goat sector is located at the crossroads of two giants in European and global goat milk and cheese production and export: France and the Netherlands. It is part of a specific rural agricultural system that has been shaped by the predominant dairy and beef cattle farming sectors. In this context, this study asked the following questions: What are the major challenges facing stakeholders in the Walloon goat sector? How is it structured? What are the challenges facing its main dairy value chain? What policy actions should be considered to address the challenges facing the sector and its main value chain? In order to best profile the Walloon goat sector, the study focused on two complementary methods. The qualitative method used produced comprehensive research on the realities in the field (semi-structured discussions and interviews, participant observations, focus groups, etc.) and integrative research (development of a dataset using tools provided by the Collège des Producteurs). The quantitative method used STATBEL, SANITEL and BioWallonie data on the Belgian and Walloon goat sectors. The analysis was also based on a comparative agriculture model and the VCA4D method for functional analysis. The results led to the proposal of a typology of the main players in the Walloon goat sector. An initial typology highlighted the profiles of farmers: small-scale goat farmers, small-scale cheese producers, diversified goat farmers, and goat farmers who mainly deliver their products. A second typology characterised four profiles of cheese dairies: artisanal, specialised, general industrial, and specialised industrial. A flow chart of the dairy value chain was proposed. During the discussion, two SWOT analyses were established on the basis of interviews and focus groups: one for farmers and one for cheese dairies. Cross references were made between these analyses. The focus groups also enabled the stakeholders themselves to identify and prioritise the actions to be taken. These actions are likely to inform the policies to be pursued in order to respond to the challenges facing the sector and its main value chain. Finally, the research showed that the goat sector has many advantages (agile, adaptive, young, diversified) and would require more support to ensure its long-term and sustainable development. How to address the oversupply of building development zones?

    Get PDF
This article examines the main obstacle to the e!ective implementation of No Net Land Take (NNLT) in Wallonia: the oversupply of building development zones. After sketching the regional context and the related ‘spatial optimisation’ strategy, we will be exploring two approaches that aim to achieve the NNLT goal while avoiding financial compensation for ‘downzoning’. The first approach involves the introduction of a new form of zoning that overlays existing land-use plans. This is currently being pursued in Wallonia through the delineation of ‘centralities’. The second approach consists of downzoning areas that are not eligible for financial compensation.11. Sustainable cities and communities13. Climate actio
