Combining Virtual Reality and Hypnosis? A User Experience Study in Patients with Multiple Myeloma Following Stem Cell Transplantation.
peer reviewedMultiple myeloma (MM) and stem cell transplantation (SCT) significantly impact patients' quality of life. Virtual reality with hypnosis (VRH) has emerged as a promising nonpharmacological intervention to address these challenges, yet data on its acceptability and user experience remain scarce. This study assessed the acceptability and user experience of a VRH intervention among adult patients with MM who had undergone allogeneic SCT. Participants used a VRH application and rated their experience through standardized questionnaires and semistructured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively, and qualitative data underwent descriptive content analysis. Findings indicated high patients' satisfaction, strong perceived relevance, and low cybersickness. Qualitative analysis revealed perceived emotional and psychological benefits. VRH was deemed particularly suitable during hospitalization and treatment periods. This study shows the potential of combining virtual reality and hypnosis for MM patients following SCT. Indeed, they showed high satisfaction levels, paving the way for further studies evaluating the clinical efficacy of such interventions
Investigating a Novel Non-Destructive Identification Technique for Prehistoric Adhesives With Dynamic Headspace Coupled to Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry.
peer reviewedAdhesives were used by prehistoric humans for attaching a handle to a stone tool, to improve tool use. Remains of these adhesives preserve on stone tools until today. Chemical analysis of these residues is essential for an improved understanding of how humans exploited their natural environment, stone tool manufacturing and use. However, chemical analysis is not straightforward, the highly degraded residue and the precious artefacts impose limitation. In this study a novel (semi-) non-destructive identification technique for prehistoric hafting adhesives is reported; dynamic headspace sampling coupled to comprehensive two-dimensional GC-MS. The dynamic sampling results in a full characterization of the volatile profile of the adhesives. A major advantage is that the whole stone tool, with the adhering adhesive, can be analyzed. Moreover, good results are obtained using only slightly elevated temperatures, which avoids heat damage to the stone tools. Nonetheless, the established biomarkers for prehistoric adhesives are not extracted with this method. Therefore, a non-targeted analytical approach combined with multivariate analysis is utilized. In this approach, the chromatogram of an unknown sample is compared to a database of known samples. In this study a start of an adhesive database is made with 14 different adhesives divided over 4 adhesive classes. The identification capability of this technique is further evaluated using six experimental stone tools, with different adhesives adhered to them and subjected to UV-induced degradation. The large stone pieces could not fit in the automated sampling station, thus, a manual sampling set-up was build. It was found that the sampling strategy did not affect the volatiles extracted and that comparison with the database was possible. The tar samples were the least affected and could be easily identified while the resin samples were more degraded and identification was difficult. This technique is promising for non-destructive adhesive identification on prehistoric stone tools

A Multicenter, Retrospective Analysis of Long-Term Survival in 255 Dogs With Pheochromocytoma Treated With Alpha-Adrenoreceptor Antagonists or Surgery (2010-2021).
peer reviewed[en] BACKGROUND: The survival of dogs with pheochromocytoma (PCC) treated with adrenoreceptor antagonists has not been described or compared to surgically managed cases.
HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to evaluate the survival of medically and surgically managed dogs with PCC and investigate factors associated with survival.
ANIMALS: Two hundred fifty-five dogs with PCC, treated with alpha-adrenoreceptor antagonists (AA) without adrenalectomy (Group 1, n = 75), adrenalectomy +/- AA (Group 2, n = 128), or neither treatment (Group 3, n = 52).
METHODS: Retrospective, multicenter review of medical records. Median overall survival time (OST) for Groups 1 and 2 combined was calculated using Kaplan-Meier estimates, and then compared between Group 1 and Group 2 using Log-Rank testing. Cox proportional hazard analysis identified factors associated with survival in Groups 1 and 2 individually and combined.
RESULTS: Median OST for all cases was 854 (95% CI: 572-1136) days. Median OST was lower in Group 1 (247 days, 95% CI: 76-418 days) than in Group 2 (927 days, 95% CI: 587-1267 days; p < 0.001). In Group 2, 88/92 dogs (97.8%) that received presurgical AA treatment survived to discharge compared to 23/27 (85.2%) that did not receive AA pretreatment (p = 0.03). Lack of clinical signs at presentation was associated with increased survival in both groups combined (HR 0.5; 95% CI 0.3-0.9; p = 0.02) and in Group 2 alone (HR 0.3; 95% CI 0.1-0.7; p = 0.01).
CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Dogs with PCC treated with adrenalectomy have longer survival compared to those managed with AA without adrenalectomy
Effects of on-farm hatching versus hatchery hatching on growth performance, gut development, and intestinal health and function in broiler chickens.
peer reviewedAn alternative hatching system known as hatch on-farm (HOF) provides early access to feed compared to hatch in hatchery (HH) system. Early feeding may promote favorable gut development, potentially improving intestinal health and broiler performance. Previous studies have assessed the effects of HOF on chick quality, welfare and performance, its impacts on gut health remain inconclusive. A total of 560 Ross 308 male chicks were reared until d 38, hatched either in a hatchery (n = 280) or on-farm (n = 280), with 14 replicates per system and 20 birds per pen. Production parameters were periodically monitored. Digestive and immune organ characteristics, intestinal permeability and histomorphology were assessed on d 7, 14, and 38. High-throughput qPCR analyzed 79 ileal genes regarding barrier integrity, immune function, nutrient transporters, gut hormones, metabolism, and oxidation. HOF chicks had higher d1 body weights than HH chicks (P 0.05), while HH chicks showed upregulation of gut barrier genes such as MUC5ac on d 7 and CLDN2 and MUC2 on d 14 (P < 0.05). HH chicks also showed upregulation of nutrient transports including VDR on d 7 and SLC30A1 and SLC5A9 on d 38, and decreased expression of the appetite-suppressing hormone CCK on d 7 (P < 0.05). HOF chicks upregulated immune-related genes, including IL-8 on d 7, IL-6, IFN-γ, AVBD9 on d 14, and NOS2 on d 38 (P < 0.05), and the oxidation gene HIF1A on d 38 (P = 0.039). In conclusion, although the HOF showed only transient growth advantages, it enhanced mucosal morphology and modulated immunity, indicating improved intestinal health
