Daimōn. Modalités de l'action des dieux en Grèce ancienne
editorial reviewedLes mythes grecs parlent de dieux et de héros, et les cités étaient pleines de sanctuaires où les honorer. Mais la poésie archaïque fait apparaître ce qui semble être un troisième type de puissance divine, à savoir le daimōn. Que recouvre précisément cette notion dans les textes poétiques des périodes archaïque et classique ? A-t-elle par ailleurs une portée cultuelle ? C’est là l’objet de cet ouvrage. Plus précisément, l’autrice analyse les occurrences de daimōn – radicalement différent de notre démon moderne – dans la poésie épique, tragique, mélique, tout en le cherchant aussi dans les pratiques rituelles. Il apparaît alors que si le terme daimōn, au pluriel, peut désigner les dieux, le mot employé au singulier renvoie à une action divine dont l’être humain pris pour cible, en bien ou en mal, ne peut identifier la source. De manière poétique, il désigne la distribution des biens et des maux qui caractérise la vie humaine. Le recours au terme de daimōn souligne ainsi la part d’incertitude constitutive d’un système polythéiste, pluriel et foisonnant, dont la présente étude permet de mieux appréhender la complexité, tant en matière de représentations que de pratiques

Time-Domain Studies of Mars Aurora: Lessons from MAVEN/IUVS and EMM/EMUS
peer reviewedTime domain studies of Mars aurora have enabled new insights into the conditions and mechanisms that give rise to auroral emissions. For example, MAVEN/IUVS observations of global aurora emissions were traced to SEP’s by their coincident timelines. The preferential local time behavior of aurora in the strong crustal field region led to the identification of reconnection as the trigger for emission. In the same vein, the EMM/EMUS instrument has identified a plethora of new temporal behaviors. These results were made possible by mission and instrument operations which provide both the time resolution to capture transient events and the sufficient temporal coverage to identify patterns, trends and correlations. After surveying auroral results of MAVEN and EMM, we will present some proposed compromises on limited M-MATISSE resources (observing time, datarate, detector binning, burst mode, spacecraft repointing, etc.) to offer the greatest opportunities for new discoveries
Evaluating the AgMIP calibration protocol for crop models; case study and new diagnostic tests
peer reviewedCrop simulation models are important tools in agronomy. Typically, they need to be calibrated before being used for new environments or cultivars. However, there is a large variability in calibration approaches, which contributes to uncertainty in simulated values, so it is important to develop improved calibration procedures that are widely applicable. The AgMIP calibration group recently proposed a comprehensive, generic calibration protocol that is directly based on standard statistical parameter estimation in regression models. Weighted least squares (WLS) is used to handle multiple response variables and forward regression using the corrected Akaike Information Criterion (AICc) is used to select the parameters to be calibrated. The protocol includes two adaptations, which are specific to each model and data set. First, initial approximations to the WLS parameters are obtained by fitting variables one group at a time. Secondly, “major” parameters are identified that are intended to reduce bias, analogously to the constant in linear regression. In this study, new diagnostic tools to be included in the protocol are proposed and tested in a case study. The diagnostics test whether the protocol does indeed lead to good initial approximations to the WLS parameters, and whether the protocol does indeed substantially reduce bias. These diagnostics provide in-depth understanding of the calibration process, reveal problems and help suggest solutions. The diagnostics should increase confidence in the results of the protocol. Having a reliable, generic calibration approach, like the augmented AgMIP protocol, is essential to using crop models more effectively
The Transcriptional Architecture of Bacterial Biosynthetic Gene Clusters.
peer reviewedBacterial biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) drive the production of diverse bioactive specialized metabolites regulated by transcription factors (TFs) in response to environmental signals. In this meta-analysis, we investigated the regulatory architecture of BGCs by compiling experimental data sets of transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs) to unveil (i) the functional gene categories preferentially targeted by TFs, (ii) the transcriptional coverage based on cluster organization, (iii) the positional distribution of TFBSs, and (iv) the binding strength of TFs. Our analysis reveals a strategy where global TFs primarily target monocistronic pathway-specific TFs when present, aligning with a "one-for-all" strategy ensuring cluster-wide expression control. In contrast, biosynthetic genes are typically organized into polycistronic operons, promoting the synchronized production of building blocks, core structures, and modifications. Assessment of the TF-TFBS interaction strength indicates that TFBSs within BGCs exhibit lower binding affinities compared to those associated with core regulon genes outside BGCs. This lower binding affinity allows greater regulatory flexibility, as BGC expression often responds to multiple environmental signals, each one sensed by its specific TF. These findings refine our understanding of the regulatory logic shaping BGC expression and offer valuable insights for predicting activation conditions, facilitating the discovery of novel compounds through targeted culture and engineering strategies

Elle explore celles-ci et examine les rationalités sous-jacentes qui guident l’action. Les résultats mettent en évidence le rôle central de la collaboration homme-machine dans la formation des perceptions, en lien avec la charge de travail, la gestion de l’information, et les questions de standardisation et de visibilité du travail. Il s'agit de jauger si les interactions homme-machine entraînent une augmentation des exigences professionnelles, une transformation de leur rôle et, in fine, leur degré de confiance dans la technologie, selon qu’elle soit perçue comme menaçante ou soutenante dans l’exécution des tâches.
Les recruteurs s’interrogent également sur les compétences centrales nécessitées dans l’évolution de leur fonction, soulignent les compétences spécifiquement humaines et s'inquiètent de la fracture numérique. Les résultats mettent en évidence l'importance de la prise en compte de l'action individuelle eu égard à l'évolution des métiers dans le contexte des changements technologiques.
