Interfacial electron redistribution in 2D/3D MoS2/CuBi2O4 p-n heterojunction for visible light assisted reduction of Cr(VI) and oxidation of antibiotics
We report the successful design of a heterojunction comprising p-type CuBi2O4 (CBO) and n-type MoS2 semiconductors. This was achieved through a hydrothermal and calcination method, resulting in the uniform deposition of three-dimensional CBO nano-cubes onto the surface of two-dimensional MoS2 nanosheets. Under visible light, the best MoS2/CBO composite exhibited the maximum catalytic efficacy for both the reduction of Cr (VI) and the oxidation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) at a molar ratio of 10:1. For tetracycline degradation the heterostructure achieved 83 % efficiency and a rate constant of 0.00412 min-1 after 180 min, while complete reduction of Cr(VI) was achieved, with a rate constant of 0.11 min-1 after 40 min. The efficiency of MoS2/CBO was averagely 1.4 times higher than that of the pristine materials for TCE degradation, while the activity was almost 1.8 times of the pristine materials for Cr(VI) reduction. The remarkable catalytic activity can be ascribed to the combined effects of electron redistribution and charge transfer between 2D MoS2 and 3D CuBi2O4 leading to the formation of a heterostructure and thereby facilitating strong interfacial interactions among the components
causing effective absorption of visible light and improved separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. It is important to note that MoS2/CBO demonstrated excellent stability and reusability after 6 cycles. The primary reactive species responsible for TC degradation were identified as photo-generated h+, and •O2- . Additionally, e- was found to be mainly liable for Cr (VI) photoreduction. Furthermore, we propose a plausible photocatalytic
reaction pathway for the elimination of both TC and Cr(VI). This research provides valuable inroads into the development of heterojunction photocatalysts for efficient water de-toxification
Investigating the challenges of the offender rehabilitation path (ORP) implementation and its impact on Kirkwood community of Eastern Cape
Text in English with abstracts in English and ZuluThis study explores the challenges and effectiveness of the Offender Rehabilitation Path (ORP) in Kirkwood, South Africa, focusing on offenders, correctional staff, and rehabilitation program coordinators. Through qualitative research, data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analysed thematically. Key challenges identified include overcrowding, limited resources, inadequate staff training, and insufficient post-release support, all of which contribute to high rates of recidivism. Additionally, a disconnect between rehabilitation programs and societal reintegration expectations poses a significant barrier, particularly for disadvantaged offenders.
To address these issues, the study recommends the need to align rehabilitation programs more closely with societal reintegration strategies. the study also recommends improving staff training, resource allocation, and post-release support systems. It also emphasizes that further research should investigate the long-term outcomes of rehabilitation efforts and the impact of community-based reintegration programs.Olu phandolwazi /uphonononga imingeni kunye nokusebenza kweNkqubo yokuLulekwa kwaBaphulimthetho (iORP) eKirkwood, eMzantsi Afrika, lugxininisa kubaphulimthetho, abasebenzi bezolu/eko, kunye nabaququzeleli benkqubo yoluleko. ldatha iqokelelwe ngodliwanondlebe olucwangciswe mayane yaze yahlalutywa ngokwemixho/o kusetyenziswa uphandontyilazwi. lmingeni engundoqo echongiweyo ibandakanya ukuxinana, ukunqongopha/a kwezibonelelo, ukunqongophala koqeqesho lwabasebenzi, kunye nokunqongophala kwenkxaso emva kokukhululwa kwabaphulimthetho. Enhanced thermal conductivity of Ag-H20 nanofluid by pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL)
In this study, we present a straightforward, one-step pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL) method for creating a surfactant-free nanofluid with silver nanoparticles suspended in water (AgNPs-H2O). The ND-YAG laser of 1064 nm wavelength is used to ablate a pure silver (Ag) target's surface in a deionized water base fluid under standard conditions. Six AgNPs-H2O nanofluids were synthesized, with concentrations corresponding to varied ablation periods (ta = 2.5; 5; 10; 15; 20; and 25 min). The synthesized nanofluid was characterised for morphology, composition, optical properties, stability tests, thermal properties, and surface tension. The nanoparticles in the water organised into an aggregate network of spherical nanoparticles, with sizes averaging between 21 and 37 nm. Apart for carbon from coating during SEM and EDS examinations, no contaminants are detected from a basic study in the fluid that is produced. AgNPs are dispersed throughout our water host fluid, as evidenced by a plasmonic peak in the UV-vis spectrum at 400 nm. Unfortunately, these nanofluids are not stable with time, at higher concentration of AgNPs in water, they settle under gravitation. That is why we lose some plasmonic peaks at high concentration (ta = 10; 15; 20; and 25 min) and only at low concentration (ta = 2.5 and 5 min) where AgNPs are stable even after 5 months.). The thermal characteristics of the generated samples were evaluated using thermal conductivity measurements, which were carried out at various nanoparticle concentrations and at temperatures ranging from 25 °C to 45 °C. The results showed that the thermal rise of Ag-water nanofluid was larger than that of pure water. When temperature rises, nanofluids become more thermally conductive. The thermal conductivity improvement was found to be around 19.45% at a temperature of 45°C and a nanoparticle volume percent of ta = 5 min. This results from the instability of AgNP at higher concentrations. Also, we assessed the contact angle, which unmistakably demonstrates that it is concentration dependant. So, even at low concentrations, the presence of silver nanoparticles will have an impact on the flow of the silver-water nanofluid. Also, it is demonstrated that a tube's surface will influence fluid flow, demonstrating the importance of careful designM.Sc. (Physics)Physic

Exploring the perspectives of Physical Science teachers on technology utilization : a case study in Makhutswe circuit
The use of technology in mainstream education has gained recognition around the world as an effective tool to improve teaching and learning across the educational curriculum system. This study aimed to explore the perspectives of Physical Science teachers on the use of technology in their classrooms in the Makhutswe circuit. To explore these perspectives the study examined teachers’ knowledge about technology, the challenges they encountered when using technology, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their engagement with technology during and post-COVID-19 lockdown.
The study employed an interpretative research paradigm to interpret and understand physical science teachers’ perspectives when using technology in their classrooms. A qualitative research approach was adopted in this study to better understand teachers’ perspectives within their context. The study used a case study design as each teacher was treated as a unique case. Participants in this study were selected from the Makhutswe circuit population using a convenience sampling method because they were easy to access. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis from six Physical Science teachers out of ten in the Makhutswe circuit. To generate meaningful findings, each case was analyzed separately using thematic analysis.
The study findings revealed that most of the teachers had knowledge about technology use in their Physical Science classrooms. Some of them used technological tools such as laptops and projectors to conduct their lessons. However, some challenges prevented them from fully using it. Some of the barriers they mentioned were a lack of technological resources, teacher training, and adequate internet connectivity. Future research may focus on doing small-scale international comparative research on physical science teachers’ perspectives on the use of technology in their classrooms. The study recommends that the Department of Basic Education make provision for technological tools, proper internet connectivity and effective teacher training for teachers, especially in rural schools. This would improve teaching and learning in rural areas.M. Ed. (Natural Science Education)Science and Technology Educatio

Critical analysis of the effectiveness of Military Police Division training in South Africa
Abstracts in English, Tsonga and SwaziThis study sought to critically explore and analyse the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of the current Military Police Division (MPD) training initiatives or curriculum on the practical workplace skills and experience of the Military Police Officials (MPOs) within the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). The term ‘training effectiveness’ describes the efficacy of training in supporting knowledge transfers, which is a post-training measurement of discernible improvements in knowledge, abilities, and attitudes.
The study adopted the mixed-methods research design approach, inspired by its pragmatist philosophical perspective. A three-phased data collection process was applied in order to triangulate the quantitative and qualitative data from the questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The first phase involved quantitative research instrumentation through questionnaire surveys aimed at assessing the efficacy of the MPD officers’ training in the SANDF. The second phase involved qualitative semi-structured individual interviews aimed at confirming the questionnaire results in respect of the quality and efficacy of the MPD training. A total of 123 participants were involved in the study, 103 of whom were selected for participation in the quantitative phase through the probability systematic sampling strategy. Meanwhile, 20 participants were selected by means of the simple random sampling technique for participation in the qualitative phase through telephonically conducted semi-structured interviews since the study was actually conducted during the COVID-19 era in the country.
Various objectives were fulfilled in this study, namely:
• To explore and describe the mandate of the MPD;
• To determine whether the current MPD training initiatives are sufficiently effective to provide Military Police Officials (MPOs) with the necessary workplace skills;
• To explore, describe and analyse international and local best police training practices;
• To explore, describe and analyse the current MPD training challenges and needs; and
• To develop a conceptual framework of practical guidelines, procedures and recommendations for the Military Police to effectively enhance the MPD training.
The findings of this study revealed that a number of challenges exist within the MPD training, including the lack of relevant training resources, unfulfilled learner expectations, misaligned MPD training to the National Qualifications Framework and required workplace skills, as well as inappropriate support structures and mechanisms for realistic on-the-job experiences. Most importantly, the findings enabled the researcher to develop an integrated conceptual training framework for recommendation to the MPD’s training to serve as a guideline for the development of a single curriculum that integrates theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and work experience. This would ensure that the MPOs are fully capacitated prior to their assessment in preparation for their occupational responsibilities. In that regard, MPOs are more closely associated with the practical value of the learning theoretical concepts. Finally, this study contributes to the training value and sustainable solution of the South African National Defence Force, the MPD, and the MPOs.Dyondzo leyi yi lave ku valanga hi vukheta na ku xopaxopa ku humelela (kumbe ku kayivela) ka migingiriko ya sweswi ya ndzetelo wa xiyenge xa Maphorisa ya Vusocha kumbe kharikhulamu eka vuswikoti byo endla ntirho bya le ntirhweni na ntokoto wa Vaofisiri va Maphorisa ya Vusocha(MPO) eka Vuthu ra Vuhlayiseki ra Afrika Dzonga (SANDF). Developing of Tshivenda scientific language register for teaching agricultural sciences
South Africa is a country known for its diversity, boasting 12 official languages, including Tshivenda, XiTsonga, SeSotho, SeTswana, SiSwati, SePedi, IsiNdebele, IsiZulu, IsiXhosa, Sign language, English, and Afrikaans. However, despite this linguistic richness, English and Afrikaans dominate as the primary languages of instruction in most schools, particularly in the teaching of Agricultural Sciences, which lack scientific language registers in indigenous languages. The South African government aims to rectify this by introducing indigenous languages as mediums of instruction in schools, presenting a significant opportunity for black African learners to engage with Agricultural Sciences in their native languages. Yet, the readiness and availability of teaching and learning resources in languages like Tshivenda pose critical challenges.
To address this gap, a study was undertaken to develop a Tshivenda scientific language register specifically tailored for teaching Animal Studies at the grade 10 levels. In its development, the researcher collaborated with various stakeholders, including Tshivenda curriculum advisors, teachers, textbook authors, and community elders. Their input was invaluable in identifying and creating Agricultural Sciences terms were lacking in Tshivenda. The study, conducted as a qualitative interpretative case study, aimed to explore the development and application of the Tshivenda scientific language register for Animal Studies. Through observations, semi-structured interviews, and diary entries, data were collected from teachers, learners, and parents using purposive sampling techniques.
Guided by social constructivism theory, which emphasizes language as a critical tool for communication and thought development through social interaction, the study revealed that the absence of Agricultural Sciences terminology in Tshivenda initially raised skepticism among some stakeholders. However, with collaborative efforts and a positive attitude towards indigenous languages, progress is evident. Despite challenges, the implementation of the Tshivenda scientific language register has shown promise in shaping classroom interactions and fostering meaningful learning experiences, ultimately leading to improved performance in Agricultural Sciences. The study recommends further development of scientific language registers for Agricultural Sciences, extending beyond Animal Studies to encompass other topics.Science and Technology Educatio
A framework for the adoption of digital solutions in South African state-owned enterprises (SOEs)
Abstract in English, Sepedi and AfrikaansLike other countries, South Africa has several enterprises wholly or partially owned by the state, known as state-owned enterprises (SOEs). The South African Public Finance Management Act of 1999 (PFMA) indicates that there are nine Schedule 1 (constitutional) entities, 21 Schedule 2 (major public) entities, 155 Schedule 3 (other national public entities) entities, and 72 provincial entities. Digitalisation, especially through Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies, promises numerous opportunities for SOEs, but it is uncertain to what extent they are positioned to embrace these opportunities to address their challenges. Following an inductive research approach and a qualitative research choice, scholarly literature on SOEs was researched, and sets of qualitative propositions were formulated. These propositions and existing technology adoption frameworks, notably the Technology-Organisation-Environment (TOE) framework, were used to define a conceptual digitalisation framework for 4IR adoption by SA SOEs. Executives from various SOEs were interviewed to enhance and validate the framework and explore the readiness of SOE leadership to accept digitalisation. The validation of the conceptual framework focused on six components: governance and leadership; digitalisation strategies; 4IR technologies; skills and training; the environment; and collaboration. Governance and risk management were noted as interrelated components. The SOE executives welcomed the framework, highlighting several challenges in their SOEs: change management; digitally savvy leadership; digital skills; regulation or policies; funding; and general support and willingness. The importance of adopting 4IR components, such as Blockchain, advanced analytics, artificial intelligence, the internet of things, robotic process automation, drones, and the like, was indicated as a pipe dream by most SOE executives, although some were already exploring certain 4IR initiatives. Also, the COVID-19 pandemic was found to be a wake-up call for SOE leadership, forcing them to think more about digitalisation. Executive collaboration was recommended at all levels regarding strategies, funding (collective buying), skills sharing, and research in 4IR, among other things. The interview findings prompted the definition of a set of additional propositions, which were used to enhance the framework. Future work in this area is noted as developing an SOE digitalisation strategy and developing toolsets to assist SOEs in 4IR digital adoption.Go swana le ka dinageng tse dingwe, Afrika Borwa e na le dikgwebo tse mmalwa tseo di lego tsa mmuso ka botlalo goba ka seripa, tseo di tsebjago bjalo ka dikgwebo tsa mmuso (di-SOE).
