Megacostalism and the pandemic: Developing a megacostal theology of care beyond COVID-19

    Get PDF
Megacostalism is a concept developed here to refer to the growing trend of mega Pentecostal churches in Africa. The mega Pentecostal churches are popular in the United States of America with leading pastors such as T.D. Jakes, Creflo Dollar, Joel Osteen, and so forth. There is an interesting growing trend of this type of churches in Africa particularly in West Africa in countries such as Nigeria and Ghana. There has also been a development of mega Pentecostal churches in South Africa after 1994. This article assesses this phenomenon by paying attention to how such churches dealt with the challenges of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as opposed to smaller churches. The study will use a case study method to assess the COVID-19 experiences in churches such as the Rhema Bible Church in Randburg, Christian Revival Church and Doxa Deo. This article will attempt to address these research questions through a conceptualisation of megacostalism. In addition, the study will look at how different mega Pentecostal churches dealt with COVID-19 to develop a proper megacostal theology of care beyond COVID-19.Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiolog

Ascension of women to senior management positions : a case of the Department of Water and Sanitation, Gauteng province

    No full text
Text in EnglishInherited colonial and patriarchal laws have created barriers for women to gain entry to employment opportunities and hierarchically advance to senior management positions (SMS). Although government is making strides in promoting women representation and gender equality in the public sector, women remain underrepresented at SMS. The aim of the study was to investigate if women at the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) advance hierarchically at the same pace as their male counterparts to SMS. The study applied a qualitative research approach to address the research objectives. Data was collected through desktop research by reviewing secondary data sources available in the public domain. The study found that women at DWS are underrepresented at SMS positions as males predominantly occupy these positions. This further widens the inequality gap, which shows that men continue to enjoy the benefits of patriarchal norms over women. Moreover, the majority of national government departments including DWS have not achieved the set employment equity target of 50% for women at SMS, and the 2% target for persons with disabilities (PWDs). The study revealed that it is a challenge to determine the level of compliance for women with disabilities at SMS as the composition of the gender and racial demographics for the 2% is not clearly defined by government. The study also found that barriers exist within the public sector which hinder the advancement of women, such as glass ceiling, glass cliff, patriarchal practices, gender stereotypes, gender bias and discrimination, exclusion of women in strategic decision-making structures, unequal salaries, harassment, bullying and intimidation, and unaccommodated disability needs, amongst others. The lack of support programmes and empowerment interventions for women to strive and self-actualise their potential to assume leadership positions has also been found to be amongst the barriers. The study recommends that for gender equality to be achieved, DWS should provide support programmes and empower women through skills development, nurturing talent, mentorship, coaching, gender mainstreaming, and provision of a gender-focused budget. Other recommendations brought forward are the inclusion of men in gender forums to drive transformation, development of gender-neutral policies, supervisor-subordinate support, and flexible policies to enable women to achieve a work-life balance.M.A (Public Administration)Public Administration and Managemen

The competence of audit committee members concerning the external audit ethics

    No full text
This study investigates the impact of audit committee members’ competence on the ethical aspects of external audits and its influence on the audit quality of Public Interest Entities (PIEs). Using a mixed-method approach, including surveys with respondents at audit firms and PIEs in Europe and semi-structured interviews with participants at PIEs in Europe, the findings highlight the importance of pre-appointment training for audit committee members concerning external audit ethics. This pre-appointment training would enable audit committee members of PIEs to evaluate whether external auditors and audit firms have implemented appropriate safeguards and mitigations to ensure the ethical audit practices of PIEs. The study recommends stringent global regulatory provisions mandating specific guidelines for PIE audit committees for assessing external auditor independence and minimizing potential conflicts of interest to preserve the audit quality of PIEs. Implications for Central European audience: For the Central European audience, the study advocates for mandatory pre-appointment training of prospective audit committee members and restrictive regulatory mechanisms to enhance audit committee members’ competence concerning the evaluation of external auditor’s independence and minimizing potential conflicts of interest for ensuring ethical audit practices and preserving audit quality of PIEs.AuditingN/

Text in English, abstracts in English, Zulu and SetshwanaThe use of dialogue in teaching and learning is important for learners as it enhances communication competence needed within educational settings and beyond. This qualitative study explored the Grade 9 Technology teachers’ use of dialogue to enhance learners’ communication competence in the teaching and learning design process. Six teachers were purposively selected from three public high schools in the Tshwane South District. The social constructivist theory guided this study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and observations and were transcribed, coded and arranged into themes using a thematic data analysis method. The study revealed that learners are more likely to interact in classroom discussions when they believe that their opinions matter. Regardless of the challenges experienced in this study regarding classroom overcrowding, which led to the increase in noise level, it was found that teachers' use of dialogue and questioning in the teaching of the subject of Technology, inspired learners to reflect, which helped them to clarify their understanding and improve their communication competence. It was also revealed that learners’ understanding of the concepts demonstrated increased learner enjoyment of the classroom as they interacted, hence helping them enhance their communication competence. Based on the findings on using dialogue to enhance learners’ communication competence, it is recommended that teachers should prioritise dialogue and structure lessons in ways that guide learners into meaningful dialogue that develops their understanding and enhances their learning. However, teachers need to provide a nurturing atmosphere where learners feel secure and comfortable in contributing to the conversation.Ukusetshenziswa kwezingxoxo ekufundiseni nasekufundeni kubalulekile kubafundi njengoba kuthuthukisa ikhono lokuxhumana okudingekayo ezimeni zokufunda nasezimpilweni zangaphandle. Educators’ use of a digital content platform in accounting to improve learner performance in Gauteng

    Get PDF
Abstract in English, Afrikaans and SothoThe research in this mini dissertation investigated the educators’ use of the digital content platform in Accounting to improve learner performance in Gauteng. Educators using the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) digital content platform in six complete Information and communication technology (ICT) schools in Ekurhuleni North presented the phenomenological research study. This limited-scope study adopted a qualitative research approach. The Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework guided the research and analysis while understanding the concepts. The study first conducted an online questionnaire completed by six participants through Google Forms. Afterwards, a non-participant observation occurred in the six ICT schools, where an additional six educators participated in the study. Twelve individuals therefore participated in this study. The participants that participated in the research are all qualified educators that specialise in teaching Accounting in the FET phase. Responses were analysed using participants' characteristics, such as gender, age, number of years using the GDE digital content platform, and years teaching Accounting. A checklist was used to analyse the participants characteristics. The limited-scope study established that the GDE digital content platform assisted educators in teaching using this learning management system (LMS). It also saved them time as e-books and lesson plans were readily available. Learners interacted more effectively when they were taught using this LMS. The research findings indicate that educator-participants responded positively to the learning management system (LMS), recognising its potential for significantly improving learner performance. This innovative approach to teaching and learning was well-received. Educators actively used platforms, such as Siyavula, Google Classroom, and WhatsApp to facilitate teaching and information sharing. A decrease in learners taking Accounting encouraged the participants to use more teaching techniques and move away from the basic textbook use in the classroom. Based on the findings, several recommendations emerge. This includes the ICT department within the Gauteng Department of Education, should encourage educators to use the GDE digital content platform effectively. This could be achieved through regular workshops, ideally conducted once per term. Educators, especially novices who are less comfortable with technology, should support each other in adopting the LMS. ICT committees in schools should proactively update their ICT policies to keep pace with technological advancements. Mo tlhamong e khutshwane e, modiradipatlisiso o batlisisitse ka tiriso ya barutabana ya tshedimosetso ya dijithale mo go ruteng Palotlotlo, go ka tokafatsa maduo mo Gauteng. Comparative content analysis of types of mathematical tasks and problem-solving heuristics in two Ghanaian Senior high school mathematics textbooks

    Get PDF
Text in EnglishThe study analysed types of mathematical tasks (TMTs) and problem-solving heuristics (PSHs) in two Ghanaian senior high school (SHS) mathematics textbooks which were purposively sampled. It was underpinned by two frameworks; the mathematical tasks analysis framework as proposed and adapted by Fan and Zhu (2000; 2004; 2006; 2007) and the cognitive tasks analysis framework as adapted by Jones and Jones (2024). The study made use of quantitative comparative content analysis as a research approach. Data were collected by means of two research guides: a content analysis guide and a tasks analysis guide; and two research instruments: a content analysis codebook and a task analysis codebook. Data from the comparative content analysis of the two Ghanaian SHS mathematics textbooks on TMTs and PSHs were coded, categorised, themed and analysed using frequency counts and percentages. Inter-rater reliability and Kappa coefficient were also used to determine the reliability and validity of the study. The study revealed from the TMTs that routine tasks (RT), non-application tasks (NAT) and scientific calculator tasks (SCT) were dominant in the GACM textbooks 1 and 2 and GECM textbooks 1 and 2 but had a reduced number of tasks in both GACM textbook 3 and GECM textbook 3 than the non-routine tasks (NRT), application tasks (AT) and nonscientific calculator tasks (NSCT). The results of the descriptive statistics indicated that there were differences in the TMTs presented in textbooks 1, 2 and 3 with a categorical inclination towards the GACM textbooks. The results indicated that the dominant PSHs in the GACM textbooks 1 and 2 and GECM textbooks 1 and 2 were low-level cognitive tasks (LLCT). However, there was a reduced emphasis on tasks utilising the LLCT in both the GACM textbook 3 and GECM textbook 3. Instead, these textbooks tended to utilise more high-level cognitive tasks (HLCT). The findings of the analysis of the descriptive statistics revealed that there were discernible discrepancies in the textbooks 1, 2 and 3, with a notable inclination towards the GACM textbooks. Percentage agreements were found to determine the level of agreement between the two raters. The findings of this study collaborate with other findings (Afolabi, 2014; Amoah, 2018; Amoah & Adu-Darko, 2023). All the other findings emphasised that the structure of mathematics textbooks are exposition, examples and exercises. Based on the conclusion, the study recommended that mathematics textbooks should incorporate more discussions on HLCT that are non-routine and applicational in nature, to improve students' understanding and prepare them for real-life applications. This approach, based on the importance of TMTs and PSHs, could reduce academic underachievement in Ghana's SHS mathematics curriculum.Ph. D. (Mathematics Education)College of Educatio

Evaluation frozen food waste within pre-retail levels in a food manufacturing company in Kwazulu-Natal

    Get PDF
The generation of food waste is a pervasive issue within all tiers of the food supply and value chain, resulting in an annual loss of approximately 1.3 billion metric tons, encompassing a substantial 30% of global food production. Food wastage spans the primary production phase, food retail establishments and continues through to the food consumption phase within households. In recent years, there has been a significant surge in global attention directed towards the issue of food loss and waste. The aim of this study is to conduct an in-depth investigation into the generation of waste associated with frozen and chilled food products within the supply and value chain of a prominent food manufacturing company situated in KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. The study objectives were to investigate the (i) reasons and drivers behind food waste generation of frozen and chilled food products in the supply and value chain of a food manufacturing company; (ii) explore the socio-economic and environmental impacts of frozen and chilled food waste generation in the company, (iii) understand consumer perceptions on chilled and frozen food waste generation in relation to their buying habits and patterns and, (iv) to critically analyse the national policy and regulatory framework on frozen and chilled food waste management in the food retail sector and make policy recommendations for sustainable chilled and frozen food waste management in the supply and value chain. The use of the triple bottom line theory aligns with the needs of the study as it gives insights into the need for appropriate reduction of food waste for the environmental, social, and economic growth of a country. Interviews, questionnaires, an online Four Eyes survey, and observational techniques were employed to gather primary data. To select a representative sample of retail stores where frozen and chilled are sold, the Fisherman’s online Qualtrics calculator was utilized. Respondents for this study were drawn from a diverse pool, including policymakers, walk-in customers, retail outlet employees, and environmental scientists. The analysis of secondary data procured from the manufacturing company was conducted using Microsoft Power BI. Quantitative data were processed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) to compute mean values. Qualitative data, in contrast, were analysed and assigned codes before being collated within themes, creating clusters of related information, patterns, and key concepts. Themes were ranked based on their significance and relevance to the research objectives, guiding subsequent in-depth discussions and analysis. The organized qualitative data served as the foundation for interpretative discussion, enabling insights and connections and drawing of study conclusions. Additionally, geographical information data, in conjunction with the 202 indicators pertaining to retail store sites, underwent integration within Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software. This integrated approach facilitated the production of visual maps, which served to visually represent the spatial distribution and pertinent attributes associated with these retail stores where frozen food is sold. Research findings underscored that suboptimal handling practices significantly contribute to the generation of waste within the frozen and chilled food domain. Furthermore, it became evident that there exists a paucity of concrete food waste regulatory policies aimed at mitigating the issue of waste generation specifically within the frozen and chilled food sector. The implications of this study are intended to serve as a valuable resource for governmental entities and stakeholders operating within both the supply and value chains. By shedding light on the challenges and deficiencies surrounding frozen and chilled food waste, these findings can inform strategic decision-making and policy development aimed at fostering more sustainable practices in this critical sector of the food industry.Ph.D. (Environmental Management)College of Agriculture and Environmental Science

A Missiological Approach to Migration and Mission in the Apostolic Faith Mission International Ministry in the United Kingdom: a Pneumatological Missional Imagination

    Get PDF
The intersections of migration and mission have been studied in past, but little has been developed regarding theoretical frameworks for approaching the subject from the discipline of missiology. This calls for the development of a framework that will assist in the missiological approach to migration and mission. The current study reflects on the current missiological approaches to migration and mission to identify the existing gaps such as relevance to Pentecostalism. To fill the gaps, this article brings together three theories of pneumatological imagination, missiological spirit and missional imagination to develop a pneumatological missional imagination. The findings are that a pneumatological missional imagination is relevant for dealing with some of the challenges in migration and mission in Pentecostalism such as an inability to minister relevantly to the host countries, cultural differences, and orientation to the mission of God. These challenges are outlined by using the Apostolic Faith Mission Ministry International in the United Kingdom (AFMIMUK) as a case study. The pneumatological missional imagination is relevant for witnessing to others, speaking foreign languages, and orientation to the mission of God.Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiolog

The role of Teff crop in Ethiopian life: consumption and contribution to rural livelihoods

    No full text
Abstract Teff (Eragrostis tef) is believed to be the smallest grain in the world. It is the most important crop in Ethiopia in terms of production and consumption. Smallholder farmers produce Teff, and it is the main source of income for farmers in comparison to other cereal crops. Teff is the daily staple food for over 50 million Ethiopians. There is a need for information on agricultural consumption, disaggregated at district level, to support evidence-based decision-making at local level. The objective of this paper is to understand the consumption of Teff among rural smallholder producers at district level and assess the position of Teff among cereals in the lives of Ethiopian rural farmers. The study employed a multistage sampling technique to select the top Teff producing regions, districts, and kebeles (small administrative units) and collected primary data through focus group discussions (FGDs), key informants, and questionnaire respondents. The survey collected qualitative and quantitative data from 357 households. FGD, key informant interview (KII) participants and survey respondents were drawn from the same areas where the survey was conducted. The quantitative and qualitative data were subjected to statistical and content analysis respectively. The study findings revealed that on average households consume 26.92% of their Teff production per year. Moreover, there is a shift in the consumption of Teff which might be due to improved standards of living among the farmers, a health-conscious community, and improved income from Teff sales. Although Teff is a staple grain in Ethiopia, there is a statistically significant variation in Teff consumption among districts
