First-principles studies of impurity defects formation and their implications on electronic and magnetic properties in a two-dimensional solid : the case of silicene

We report on first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations of interactions between extrinsic defects and intrinsic structural defects in silicene. Specifically, we investigate the stability, structural, magnetic and electronic properties of a monolayer silicene containing vanadium (V), hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O) atoms. Vanadium is a magnetic transition-metal and its incorporation in silicene lattice introduces magnetization. Thus, we have considered various configurations of vanadium either as interstitial or substitutional atoms, and their interactions with silicene vacancies. Hydrogen and oxygen are ubiquitous elements which are inadvertently introduced during material synthesis. Therefore, for practical purposes, it is important to investigate how their presence impact on the host material which in this case, are silicene or silicene containing vanadium impurities. We show that a monovacancy introduces a magnetic moment of 2.02 μB in an otherwise non-magnetic monolayer silicene. Nonetheless, the vacancy possesses a significant formation energy of 3.52 eV, which suggest that it may only be produced through external perturbation such as electron irradiation. Also, we show that a divacancy is more stable than a single vacancy, but unlike a single vacancy, it has a zero magnetic moment. Also, divacancies at different separation in silicene lattice have a similar formation energy irrespective of their separation. Furthermore, when a silicene atom is substituted by a vanadium atom, the latter makes the monolayer silicene metallic while introducing a magnetic moment of 2.61 μB. The presence of a vacancy at a different atomic separation from vanadium shows that the nearest-neighbour vanadium-vacancy defect complex, that is, vanadium in a divacancy has the highest stability, however, all the substitutional vanadium-vacancy configurations are stable and both types of defects can co-exist in a monolayer silicene. Regarding small vanadium clusters consisting of a pair of vanadium at varying separations, we found that the relative stability of the V-V pair is sublattice dependent, which oscillates between ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) configuration as the substitutional lattice sites of the V-V pair varies. When the V-V dimer are on a similar sublattice type, they prefer to couple together antiferromagnetically. However, when they are on a different sublattice type, the V-V dimer prefer to be in ferromagnetic configuration. Comparison between the binding energy of substitutional V-vacancy pair and V-V pair shows that vanadium clustering is more probable without the vacancy than with vacancy. Consideration of interstitial hole V-V pair, that is, V-V pair at the centre of silicene hexagons affirms that indeed, small V-V pair are stable without vacancies. The presence of V atoms, however, induces finite magnetic moment in monolayer silicene, while annihilating the Dirac point and opening a narrow band gap of under 0.1 eV in the monolayer silicene electronic band structures. We found that the V atom attracts the O and H either in atomic or molecular form, and when adsorbed they impact on the magnetization of V-doped monolayer silicene by reducing or annihilating its magnetic moment. Furthermore, a V-doped silicene having adsorbed atomic H and O behaves like a ferromagnetic semiconductor. On the other hand, molecular H2 and O2 adsorbed on a V-doped silicene do not result in a ferromagnetic semiconductor, although the resulting structures are metallic with a finite magnetization. We also found that the impact of H and O on the electronic and magnetic properties of V-doped silicene depends on their respective lattice locations, that is, whether these adsorbates are on the V atom or on the silicene atom near to the V dopant.Ph. Flood susceptibility analysis in Oshakati and Ongwediva within the Cuvelai-Etosha Basin (CEB), north-central Namibia, using remote sensing and GIS techniques

    No full text
Floods are a major problem affecting many parts of the world. Generally, the Cuvelai Etosha Basin (CEB) of north-central Namibia and specifically Oshakati and Ongwediva towns are no exceptions to this problem. Floods have ravaged the study area throughout the past and continue to do so in present times. Flood analysis in Oshakati and Ongwediva was carried out to map and determine drainage patterns, inundated zones and flood susceptibility. The research relied on collected geographic datasets of satellite images, YXZ survey points of the study area from which the DEM was created, cadastral data and participants' perceptions through a participatory GIS questionnaire. Remote sensing and GIS were used in the research. ArcGIS, Model Maker and Microsoft Excel were used in this research. Remote sensing techniques through the use of onscreen digitising was used to map shallow depressions, streams and inundated zones. Flood susceptibility was generated in ArcGIS after classifying the DEM into five elevation categories, from which flood susceptibility classes were deduced. Participatory GIS was used to further determine flood impact and rank flood susceptibility in Oshakati and Ongwediva towns. Parts of the study area were found to fall within shallow depressions and streams. Using onscreen digitisation, it was found that 18.60% of the entire towns of Oshakati and Ongwediva was situated within shallow depressions and streams, leaving 81.40% of Oshakati and Ongwediva shallow depressions and stream free. Considering the two towns individually, 21.0% of Oshakati town is in shallow depressions and streams, while 15.40% of Ongwediva town is situated in shallow depressions and streams. Shallow depressions features are primarily found in the town of Oshakati, degenerating into streams towards the southern part of the town as they flow towards Etosha pan in the south. Stream features are concentrated in the Ongwediva town, mainly in the eastern part of the town running through settlements such as the Sky location. An inundation map showed that 23% of Oshakati and Ongwediva towns was inundated during the 2009 flood season. The towns of Oshakati and Ongwediva is subjected to different flood susceptibility classes ranging from very high to very low. The very high flood susceptibility class occupied 6.54% of the two towns, while 24.48% of the Oshakati and Ongwediva towns is situated in high flood susceptible zones. Further, 32.70%, 24.52% and 11.76% of Oshakati and Ongwediva are respectively located in moderate, low, and very low flood-susceptible zones. Looking at the individual towns, Oshakati town is more susceptible to flooding than Ongwediva town, given that more of its land is situated in very high and high flood susceptible zones compared to Ongwediva town. Several institutions, businesses, public places and critical infrastructure fell into very high and high flood-susceptible zones, especially in Oshakati. In Ongwediva town, most institutions, businesses, and public places did not fall into flood-susceptible zones; they were used to being surrounded by flood water, which restricted access to them. Of all the participants in participatory GIS, 16% were never affected by floods, while 84% reported being affected by floods. Oshoopala, Uupindi and Oneshila are the most flood affected settlements in Oshakati, whereas Efidi location, Sky location and western extensions of 12-17&20 are the most flood affected in Ongwediva town based on participatory GIS data. Ekuku location in Oshakati town and the CBD and the suburbs for both towns are the least affected by floods based on participants, perceptions. Results of data analysis has indicated that Oshakati town is more prone to flooding than Ongwediva town. This is evident from very high and high flood susceptibility classes that occupies a larger area in Oshakati town than in Ongwediva town. Moreover, Oshakati town has more of its land falling within shallow depressions, streams and inundation in comparison to Ongwediva town.M. Sc. (Geography)Geograph

Developing a strategic framework for effective budgeting in primary schools in South Africa: A critical evaluation of budgeting practices

In this dissertation titled: Developing a strategic framework for effective budgeting in primary schools in South Africa: A critical evaluation of budgeting practices, I investigated budgeting practices in two rural public schools of the Maleboho Central Circuit in Limpopo Province using a qualitative research approach. I took an interpretative stance and used a multiple case study design to study budgeting contextually at two schools, comparing and confirming the findings across the cases. Participants who could be reasonably assumed to be knowledgeable about budgeting were purposefully sampled. Convinced that participatory budgeting is the best theoretical grounding for effective budgeting in a democratic context, I grounded the study in this theory. I discovered that the fundamental building blocks of effective budgeting such as budget planning, drawing up, implementation, monitoring and control are being ignored. Prior to budgeting, neither of the school does any planning. Documents such as the schools' vision and mission statements, previous year's financial accounts, and development plans are not considered and deliberated on. Budgeting is thus done without anyone knowing how much money is available, without anyone considering the school's aims, and without any money being allocated for development. Finance policies are developed to meet departmental requirements rather than to guide the governing body members in handling school funds. The credibility of both schools’ audit reports is compromised by the exclusion of members of the governing body during the appointment of the auditors who are alleged to be friends of the principals. The findings of the study confirm that participatory budgeting, which at the very least requires the involvement of all stakeholders, is not practised. Although the governing body members of both schools are not equipped to adopt their schools’ budgets, the Limpopo Department of Education does little to provide them with the skills needed to practise effective budgeting in their schools. The need for a strategic framework to guide schools’ governing body members, or at least their finance committees to effectively budget was thus confirmed. With consideration of the legal prescripts and the empirical findings, I developed a strategic framework based on the essential building blocks for effective budgeting, namely planning, drawing, implementation, monitoring and control.Mo nyakišišong ye thaetlele ya yona e rego Go hlabolla tlhako ya maano a go dira ditekanyetšo tše di šomago gabotse dikolong tša praemari ka Afrika Borwa: Tekolo ye bohlokwa ya mekgwa ya go beakanya ditekanyetšo, ke nyakišišitše mekgwa ya go beakanya ditekanyetšo dikolong tše pedi tša mmušo tša dinagamagaeng tša Sedikothuto sa Bogare sa Maleboho ka Profenseng ya Limpopo ke šomiša mokgwa wa nyakišišo ya khwalithethifi. An analysis of the incorporation of Western practice in Black South African traditional weddings

    No full text
Black South Africans conduct their matrimonial ceremonies by practising African indigenous traditional customs, however, they simultaneously conduct white weddings in addition to their African traditional customs. The celebration of white weddings by black people should be understood within the context of their colonial history which has had an impact on cultural practices. This study aimed to gain a critical understanding of, and to explain the reasons that motivate black people to conduct white wedding customs in conjunction with traditional ones in South Africa. It traced the history of wedding conduct or practices of black South Africans and the dialectical process of those practices. The researcher employed a qualitative research methodology, utilising a focus group discussion for data collection and a critical discourse analysis for analysing the research results. The results of the study are discourses focusing on opposition, societal pressure, legal discourses, religious imperialism, economic discourses, and condemnation of African culture. These results pivot towards an overarching discourse centering on the impact of colonisation on African marriage which leads to its incorporation of Western practice. This is causing incongruence of thoughts, feelings, and behaviour in black people’s marriage conduct, where black people exist in a double conscious experience, particularly in terms of marriage conduct.M.A. (Psychology)Psycholog

Test of CP-invariance of the Higgs boson in vector-boson fusion production and in its decay into four leptons

    No full text
Abstract A search for CP violation in the decay kinematics and vector-boson fusion production of the Higgs boson is performed in the H → ZZ* → 4ℓ (ℓ = e, μ) decay channel. The results are based on proton-proton collision data produced at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector from 2015 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. Matrix element-based optimal observables are used to constrain CP-odd couplings beyond the Standard Model in the framework of Standard Model effective field theory expressed in the Warsaw and Higgs bases. Differential fiducial cross-section measurements of the optimal observables are also performed, and a new fiducial cross-section measurement for vector-boson-fusion production is provided. All measurements are in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of a CP-even Higgs boson

Developing a work engagement framework for employees in the tertiary education sector in Zimbabwe

    No full text
Abstract in English, Xhosa and ZuluThe study focused on the construction of a work engagement framework, by investigating the relationship between perceived organisational justice, the psychological contract, work engagement and socio-demographic variables (age, gender, employment status and employment category). This is to inform work engagement strategies for different socio-demographic groups of employees in the context of the tertiary education environment in Zimbabwe. A quantitative survey was conducted on a sample of academic and non-academic (permanent and contract) staff (n = 336) at the selected tertiary institution. The post-positivist philosophy and the census sampling technique were adopted. The bivariate correlations indicated strong relationships between perceived organisational justice, the psychological contract, and work engagement. Stepwise regression analysis revealed perceived organisational justice and the psychological contract to be the strongest predictors of work engagement. Moderated hierarchical regression analysis revealed that the identified socio-demographic variables did not moderate the relationships between perceived organisational justice, the psychological contract, and work engagement. Spearman’s bivariate correlation and regression analyses informed structural equation modelling and revealed a good fit between perceived organisational justice, the psychological contract, and work engagement. Statistically significant differences were found in respect of the socio-demographic variables. From a theoretical standpoint, the study enhanced deeper comprehension of the hypothesised work engagement framework; on an empirical standpoint, the study developed an empirically tested work engagement framework; and on a practical level, individual-level and organisation-level interventions pertaining to the work engagement framework are recommended for human resource managers.Esi sifundo sagxila ekwakheni isikhokelo somsebenzi ngokuphanda ulwalamano phakathi kobulungisa bequmrhu obucingelwayo, isivumelwano sesimo sengqondo nokusebenza nemiba yezobalo loluntu (ubudala, isini, uhlanga, nesimo sengqesho). De-migranticizing as methodology: rethinking migration studies through immobility and liminality

    No full text
Abstract De-migranticization is becoming a core strategy for overcoming the fetishization of migrants in migration studies. However, this shift in perspectives raises questions about what categories to use instead. This paper contributes to these debates by considering the potential of studying immobility as a tool for de-migranticization. It looks at immobility through the lens of liminality: as a transitory phase, as a transformative stage and as one which enables epistemological subversion. In doing so, it goes beyond other border spanning terms to offer methodological insights into using immobility and liminality to de-migranticize. The paper suggests that these qualities of reading immobility through theories of liminality has implications for when, where and how to study migration. The empirical case draws on 165 semi-structured interviews with distance education students from Zimbabwe, Namibia and Nigeria studying at the University of South Africa (UNISA)

Academic studies on Russian German free churches, particularly on Russian German Pentecostal congregations, are rare. These congregations have hardly been researched to date, both in missiology and academic practical theology, which is the frame of reference for this study. The research question of this study focuses on freechurch Russian German Pentecostals. It examines the (practical) theological content conveyed in the sermons transmitted digitally via YouTube to their congregations or held in church services during the pandemic from 2020 onwards. It is noteworthy that during the coronavirus pandemic, some empirical studies on church services in large and free churches have attracted increased interest due to the new media format. Although this research fits into this context, it stands out due to its specific focus on sermons within Russian German Pentecostal congregations. Another distinctive feature: in contrast to the two large regional churches and most Protestant free churches in Germany, the preaching ministry in the Russian German Pentecostal congregations is predominantly carried out by laypeople. One result of this study is that the theological content of the sermons is inextricably linked to the historical development and the culture of remembrance of the Russian German Pentecostals. The frame of reference ranges from the practical theological formation and partly normative premises in biblical teaching and lifestyle to experiences in former Russia. It influences the sermon content as strongly as the ongoing integration phase.M.A. (Practical Theology)Practical Theolog

Towards dismantling heteronormativity at South African universities : heterosexual students’ perceptions of heteronormative ideologies and LGBTIQ+ identities

    Get PDF
South African literature demonstrates that heteronormative ideologies are evident at universities and inform various discriminations against LGBTIQ+ students. These heteronormative ideologies emanate from the traditional heteronormative socialisation in the South African society. While there is notable literature based on the experiences and perceptions of LGBTIQ+ students at universities, not much research pays attention to heterosexual students’ perceptions. It is imperative to consider heterosexual students’ perceptions of LGBTIQ+ identities to challenge heteronormative ideologies and transform universities into inclusive spaces. This article is based on heterosexual university students’ non-heteronormative perceptions of LGBTIQ+ identities. I argue that there is the potential to dismantle heteronormativity at universities since the heterosexual students in this research are critical of heteronormative ideologies and question stereotypes about sexual minority identities. Through semi-structured interviews with 10 self-identifying heterosexual students, the article established that students’ perceptions of LGBTIQ+ identities were affirming as they resisted traditional norms of sexuality and gender and demonstrated sensitivity to sexual diversity. The paper calls for further research to critically engage heterosexual students in conversations around heteronormativity to advance the acceptance, tolerance, and inclusion of LGBTIQ+ students at South African universities.SociologyNational Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS

Text in EnglishThe world is facing a global water crisis, with many regions experiencing intense competition for limited water supplies among various stakeholders, including game lodges, residents, agriculture, and various other industries. This crisis is exacerbated by water scarcity, mismanagement, and climate change which necessitates robust water governance for sustainable development. Addressing these issues requires a holistic and collaborative approach that considers the needs of local communities, involved stakeholders and the environment while promoting equitable and efficient water use. Tourism is a significant global economic contributor, and any disruption in the availability of water in areas such as game lodges can have a cascading effect on the overall tourism sector and local economies and employment. Effective is crucial for sustainable development in water-scarce areas, as conflicts over water use between these stakeholders can contribute to broader concerns related to social equity and justice. Sustainable water management is imperative for environmental conservation and the longevity of game lodges and is integral to the tourism industry as water scarcity directly impacts their operations. Most game lodges are situated in remote, ecologically sensitive areas that are crucial for biodiversity conservation with little to no infrastructure, relying on rivers, dams, and boreholes as water sources. Due to their remote locations, game lodges face unique challenges, relying heavily on water for guests and employees. Staff members residing nearby contribute to high water consumption. Thus, game lodges must ensure a sufficient water supply, educate visitors and employees on water usage, and reduce imbalances for neighboring residents. Such residents play an important role in managing available water resources to prevent social tensions that can impact community relations and the overall stability between game lodges, residents, and other water users. In South Africa, where water is a scarce resource, effective water management strategies are crucial, especially in arid areas hosting game lodges. This study explored the reflexive water governance practices adopted by game lodges and neighboring residents to enhance efficient water use, mitigate scarcity, and achieve sustainable water management. Data were collected from key study participants representing the government, water companies, water authorities, residents, and the game lodge owners who answered questions in semistructured interviews. Secondary data were also used to provide information about the governance and sustainable management of water in the study area. Findings demonstrated the intricate relationship between game lodges, neighboring residents, and water resource management that, if not optimally managed, could lead to pollution and degradation of water quality, affecting not only the immediate environment but also all water users. According to the study, poor water governance, particularly for residents in local communities, resulted from corruption, a lack of efficient policies, inadequate monitoring and evaluation systems, a lack of water awareness, insufficient efforts to reduce water consumption, and inadequate water management. While multiple game lodges with 3–5-star ratings equipped themselves with water efficiency systems, a lack of government policy enforcement and stakeholder collaboration hindered the adoption of water measures such as the efficient use of taps and toilets. On the other hand, residents in local communities who faced an intermittent water supply increased their water supply by adopting water conservation efforts through reuse, reduction, and recycling because the municipality in their neighborhood did not provide enough water and there were limited water resources. The study findings also indicated that the game lodges made provisional access for their employees to obtain water but there was no community beneficiation implemented towards improving water access in a sustainable and equitable manner. Overall, the benefits of the use of reflexive governance and the water governance framework which require a collaborative and sustainable approach was suggested as a means of managing water resources between game lodges and residents. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on responsible tourism, emphasizing the need for reflexive water governance as an integral component in the pursuit of sustainable development within the context of game lodges and their associated residents. It is crucial to ensure that the core right to access water for basic needs is met for everyone, and any additional initiatives should contribute to overall social welfare without compromising this fundamental right. A variety of strategies for better water governance in the region were suggested by the study.Ph. D. (Environmental Science)Environmental Science
