A social support framework for mental health care users to promote continuity of care
Text in EnglishMental healthcare users (MHCUs) often face mental health challenges such as relapse, consequently leading to readmissions due to inadequate continuity of care. The study aimed to develop a social support framework for MHCUs to promote continuity of care.
The study was conducted in mental health institutions and primary health care (PHC) settings in Mopani, Vhembe and Capricorn districts in Limpopo province. A qualitative, grounded theory approach guided the study. Phase one sought to explore and describe the experiences of operational managers, mental healthcare providers (professional nurses and social workers), and MHCUs regarding social support and continuity of care. Purposive sampling was used, and data were collected from five operational managers, 14 professional nurses, three social workers and nine MHCUs using semi-structured face-to-face interviews. A comparison method was used to analyse the data.
Four themes emerged. Theme one described issues related to support for MHCUs, namely the role of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) and other informal support structures, lack of support from family, the community and the Department of Health and significant social institutions in the daily support of MHCUs. Theme two concerned matters essential in relation to the provision of mental healthcare services, namely inter-professional collaborative mental healthcare services, mental healthcare providers’ (MHCPs) views on ideal mental healthcare services, knowledge deficits on issues surrounding mental healthcare, and leadership as the core of mental health. Theme three focused on contemporary issues in healthcare impacting mental health, namely COVID-19 restrictions’ hindrance to mental health. Theme four highlighted essential steps to move forward regarding the provision of support for MHCUs, namely mechanisms of support, communication media essential in promoting social support, and continuity of care.
The findings of the qualitative, grounded theory approach reflected inadequate social support is being provided for MHCUs, prompting the researcher to develop a conceptual framework to address this phenomenon. Phase two of the study thus sought to develop a social support framework to promote continuity of care. Phase three focused on a group of experts and stakeholders validating the social support framework.D. Phil. (Health Studies)Health Studie
Investigating and mapping out the formal urban food environment and diet quality of women of reproductive age within the city of Johannesburg, South Africa
Abstract in English with Afrikaans and Zulu translationBackground: The health of WRA is important since evidence shows that the diet quality and nutritional status of women, not only during pregnancy but also prior to pregnancy, affects the health of her offspring. One of the major influencing factors to these undesirable conditions is a poor diet quality. Food environments play a significant role in diet quality.
Aim: This study sought to investigate the association between the formal urban food environment and diet quality of WRA within the city of Johannesburg, South Africa.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, WRA attending the Discoverers Community Health Centre (DCHC) in Roodepoort for family planning or antenatal care were recruited. Socio-demographic data were collected using interviewer-administered questionnaires. Body weight and height measurements were collected from non-pregnant women and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) from all women. Diet history was obtained using a multiple-pass 24-hour dietary recall method. Diet quality was measured in two ways: the Dietary Diversity Score (DDS) to categorise scores into the Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women (MDD-W) categories; and the Rapid Eating Assessment for Participants – Shortened Version (REAP-S) survey. The food environment was also measured in two ways: the modified Retail Food Environment Index (mRFEI) and measuring the median Euclidean distance from participant residential addresses to food retailers (grocery stores and fast-food outlets).
Results: The study participants consisted of 427 WRA (142 non-pregnant and 285 pregnant) residing in the Roodepoort area. The mean age of participants was 29.8±6.5 years. Almost half were single (49 %), and although most of the participants had good education (78 % completed matric or a tertiary education), more than half were unemployed (53 %) and a third receiving social grants (33 %). The REAP-S survey results showed that the participants had a moderate diet quality based on dietary behaviours (REAP-S score = 27.1±3.3), with non-pregnant women having a lower REAP-S score than pregnant women (26.5±3.6 vs. 27.3±3.2). It was found that the study population had poor dietary diversity (DDS = 4.1±1.4) with 64 % of the study population not meeting the MDD-W (60 % pregnant and 72 % non-pregnant not meeting the MDD-W). The study found a correlation between the two diet quality scores (r = 0.159 p = 0.001) indicating the two measures had similar outcomes of diet quality. The environment was found to be an obesogenic food environment indicated by a low mRFEI score (31 %). The median distance from the study participants’ residential addresses to grocery stores was 337.6 (193.5–594.2) m and to fast-food outlets was 230.5 (141.4–416.6) m which indicates that a grocery store is as accessible as a fast-food outlet and that consumers may choose to visit either when visiting a food outlet. The study found no associations of either diet quality score with the mRFEI score; or either diet quality score
v
and the median distance to food retailers (grocery stores and fast-food outlets). Even so, many participants were overweight with the MUAC results indicating that 30 % may be obese and the BMI results of non-pregnant women indicating that the majority were overweight or obese (73 %).
Conclusion: The study found that the participants live in an obesogenic food environment, majority did not reach the MDD-W and most non-pregnant participants were overweight or obese indicating that the food environment may have an impact on participant food choices, diet quality and thereby overall health, even though our results did not show an association. Several reasons are possible for our results showing no association between the diet quality and the food environment scores, including measuring a homogenous environment where there is little range of food exposure, as well as the study not considering the impact of the informal food environment (e.g. street vendors) on food choices. The health of WRA is important for the future generation’s health since evidence shows that nutritional status of women not only during pregnancy but also prior to pregnancy affects offspring health. It is therefore vital that the influence of the food environment on diet quality be fully understood and measures be taken to improve the health and well-being of WRA.Agtergrond: Die gesondheid van vroue van vrugbare ouderdom (VVO) is belangrik omdat daar bewys is dat die dieetkwaliteit en voedingstatus van vroue, nie slegs tydens maar ook vóór swangerskap, die gesondheid van haar kinders beïnvloed. Een van die sleutelfaktore wat hierdie ongewenste toestande beïnvloed is swak dieetkwaliteit. Voedselomgewing speel ’n belangrike rol by dieetkwaliteit.
vii
Isendlalelo: Ibaluleke kakhulu impilo yabesifazane asebengathola abantwana ngokweminyaka yobudala (WRA) njengoba ubufakazi bukhombisa ukuthi iqophelo lokudla kanye nomsoco ekudleni abakudlayo kuyithinta kakhulu inzalo, futhi lokhu akwenzeki nje kuphela ngesikhathi sokukhulelwa kodwa nangaphambi kokukhulelwa. The Nikiforov-Uvarov method in the study of thermodynamic properties of the diatomic molecules
Transition metal hydrides, including CrH and others, have a significant impact on
chemical synthesis, serving as intermediates and in solid matrix samples for infrared
spectroscopy. Moreover, the CuLi molecule provides insights into the bonding characteristics
of mixed transition metal lithides. Additionally, the study of transition metal
carbide molecules like TiC, NiC, and others is currently a highly active research area,
driven by the necessity for accurate measurement of their chemical bonding.
This thesis explores the solution of the Schr¨odinger equation for the Manning-Rosen
potential alongside a class of Yukawa and the Hulth´en plus Yukawa potential models
using the Nikiforov-Uvarov method. It obtains the energy eigenvalues and corresponding
eigenfunctions in closed form. Subsequently, the partition function is computed,
and various thermodynamic functions such as Helmholtz free energy, mean energy, entropy,
and specific heat capacity of the system are evaluated.
Furthermore, the Schr¨odinger equation for the Hulth´en plus Yukawa potential model
is solved under the influence of magnetic and Aharonov-Bohm flux fields using the exact
quantization rule. Closed-form expressions for the energy eigenvalues are derived
and utilized to compute the partition function and other thermo-magnetic functions
such as Helmholtz free energy, mean energy, entropy, specific heat, magnetization, and
magnetic susceptibility for CuLi, CrH, and NiC diatomic molecules. These findings
are relevant in condensed matter physics, chemical and molecular physics, and various
other areas of physics.Ph.D. (Physics)Physic

. Four signal regions, with the requirement of at least three light leptons (electron or muon) and at least two jets out of which at least one jet is identified as coming from a b-hadron, are considered based on the number of leptons of a given flavour. The main background processes are estimated using dedicated control regions in a simultaneous fit with the signal regions to data. No excess above the Standard Model background prediction is observed and 95% confidence level limits on the production cross section times branching ratio are derived as a function of the leptoquark mass. An analysis of the representation of minority groups in the secondary school history curriculum : a case of the Vhavenda learners in Zimbabwe
Abstracts in English, Venda and ZuluThis research delves into the intricate web of representational injustices embedded within the
Zimbabwean secondary school curriculum, with a focused examination of the plight of the
Vhavenda learners. Guided by Nancy Fraser’s social justice theory, the study uncovers layers
of representation, recognition, and distributive injustices that impede the positive portrayal of
the Vhavenda ethnic group. For the purposes of this study, the multiple case study research
design was selected. This choice was made to allow for an in-depth exploration of complex
phenomena within real-life contexts, facilitating a comprehensive understanding of the
research questions. Additionally, a qualitative research methodology was adopted to explore
the rich narratives and perspectives of participants, enabling a nuanced analysis of the
underlying themes and patterns inherent in the data. Through a comprehensive analysis, a
kaleidoscopic array of factors influencing representational injustices was unearthed. Foremost
among these factors is the enduring legacy of colonial language policies, which enshrined
only two native languages, Shona and Ndebele, marginalizing others such as Vhavenda. The
pervasive influence of colonial heritage continues to shape educational policies, perpetuating
disparities in the curriculum representation of the history of the Vhavenda. The study reveals
that Zimbabwe's nation-building agenda has been hindered by deep-seated linguaphobia, ethnic biases, and regionalism, exacerbating the marginalisation of minority groups like the
Vhavenda. In the secondary school curriculum, the history of the Vhavenda is relegated to
peripheral status, construed merely of an account of when the Vhavenda came into contact
with the Ndebele on their way from South Africa. This research adopts a diagnostic and
remedial approach, proposing solutions to rectify the representational anomalies within the
curriculum. By advocating for inclusive policies that recognize and valorize the cultural
diversity of Zimbabwe, the study aims to address the systemic injustices that undermine the
educational experiences of minority groups. Ultimately, this research contributes to the
ongoing discourse on social justice in education, shedding light on the urgent need for
curriculum reform to foster inclusivity, recognition, and equitable representation of all ethnic
groups within the Zimbabwean educational landscape. It centers on the construction of an
authentic post-colonial inclusive curriculum characterized by comprehensive representation.Tsenguluso iyi i ṱoḓisisa nga vhuronwane webu yo serekanaho ya u sa tevhedzwa ha vhuimeleli

Constructions of intimate partner femicide in the national strategic plan on gender-based violence and femicide and associated scholarship: a decolonial analysis
Abstract in English with Northern Sotho and Zulu translationsThe National Strategic Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF-NSP) is the most recent and most prominent national-level effort to address femicide in South Africa. Published in 2020, the GBVF-NSP seeks to guide government responses to gendered violence. To date, there has not been a sustained analysis of the GBVF-NSP and its impact. Assuming a decolonial feminist framework and adopting thematic analysis and document analysis as a two-step analytic process, this study aimed to examine thematic constructions of intimate partner femicide within the GBVF-NSP and the academic literature published since the GBVF-NSP’s inception. It was found that although data sources sporadically pushed back against colonial logics, an individualising approach was by-and-large adhered to which unwittingly reproduced the logic of the colonial difference. Accordingly, several policy, grassroots, and pedagogical recommendations are suggested which make central the backdrop of coloniality in how we seek to address gendered violence in South Africa.Leano la Togamaano la Bosetšhaba ka ga Dikgaruru tše di Theilwego go Bong le Polao ya Basadi (GBVF-NSP) ke maitapišo a moragorago le a go tšwelela kudu a maemo a bosetšhaba a go rarolla polao ya basadi ka Afrika Borwa. The Piano
The Piano (2024) entailed the production of 19 new works for a solo exhibition at IS Gallery in Stellenbosch. For this exhibition I also included two works – Song of the philosopher 1 and 2 – from my 2023 Song of the philosopher exhibition at Rust-en-Vrede Gallery in Durbanville, since in that series I already commenced my semiotic investigation into the relationship of word to image. These works contain sound wave imagery and were thus appropriate for the The Piano exhibition. The latter project also includes an online exhibition catalogue and the works remain permanently available for viewing at www.elfriededreyer.com/the-piano.
In my theoretical research as well as my past creative practice, I investigate spaces, places, and worlds—whether natural, artificial, or invented. They are hypothesised as layered and complex, revealing the convolutions of human action and invention. I project theoretical frameworks of utopia, dystopia, and heterotopia onto the selected spaces and places; and again in the The Piano works I approached my piano as a heterotopian object in the Foucauldian sense of functioning as a site of layered narrative, memory, and transformation. My piano has been my companion for many decades, forming the conceptual and material foundation of my artistic inquiry. A pivotal moment in my relationship with the piano occurred in 2017, during the devastation of the Knysna Great Fire, which reduced all my earthly possessions to ash and clinker. My piano, however, survived—not by chance, but by absence. This absence transformed it into a metaphor of creative obsession, intensifying my emotional connection with the instrument and its role in my life. It now represents not only my girlhood but also my identity as a mother and an artist, forming an ontogenetic presence that reflects my journey toward maturity.
In the works for The Piano, I considered the piano as a vessel for memory and loss, resonating with the aftermath of the fire. As a heterotopian object it exists in a layered conceptual space of blurring boundaries between past and present, personal and collective. It is simultaneously a material instrument and an emotional vessel, a site of disciplined practice and imaginative escape, a survivor of destruction and a symbol of continuity. I aimed to revive and recollect memories of childhood rituals of disciplined repetition—practicing scales, arpeggios, and other technical exercises. These acts of mechanical rigour have been a source for polyphonic imagery and narrative, where obsessive repetition, production, and remembrance accumulate into a layered sonic and conceptual landscape. My methodology of layering of materials, images, and digital elements echoes the cumulative nature of memory and experience.
Beyond its physicality, the piano as a musical instrument conjures imaginative journeys. Its black-and-white keys, inner mechanical structure, hammers, and harp evoke both the rational precision of musical notation and the boundless creativity of improvisation. The juxtaposition of ebony and ivory not only produces tonal contrasts but also symbolises the interplay of light and dark, life and death—an ever-present theme in my work.
The piano’s wooden cabinet, with its rounded contours, becomes a birthing locus of creation. It is both a container and a producer of worlds, a maternal presence that generates and recites sound. In this way, it mirrors the mothering body, which brings forth new life through biomorphic processes yet allows for genetic variation and improvisation. This maternal resonance extends to my broader artistic imagery, particularly the recurring motif of the withered angel trumpet flower. This flower, in its dried form, symbolises the cyclical nature of life and death, resonating with the themes of loss and regeneration embodied by the piano. In my visual practice, these flowers become dancers—flor de muertos—engaged in a ritual of remembrance and renewal. Their presence underscores the intertwining of past and present, decay and rebirth, silence and sound. As an artist working in both physical and digital media, my work embraces intermediality, enabling fluid dialogues between tangible materials and ephemeral digital realms.
Ultimately, my piano is not just a musical instrument—it is a heterotopian micro-world that encapsulates my personal history, artistic practice, and conceptual preoccupations. It serves as a repository of loss, a medium of disciplined practice, and a generator of new creative forms. The Piano (2024) entailed the production of 19 new works for a solo exhibition at IS Gallery in Stellenbosch. Older persons perceptions and experiences living in violent-stricken communities: suggestions for social work practice
Background of the study: Various communities in South Africa are permeated by crime and violence. These social ills are part of the lives of many older persons living in crime-stricken neighbourhoods. Social workers often assist older persons regarding some forms of abuse, including community violence. Limited research is available regarding the perceptions and experiences of older persons about community violence and about them living in a violent-stricken community.
Aim: This research study aimed to understand the perceptions and experiences of older persons about community violence living in the violent-stricken community of Eersterust in the Tshwane region and to offer suggestions for social work practice.
Methods: A qualitative research approach was followed using phenomenological and explorative designs. Semi-structured interviews were used as the data collection method, operationalised through an interview guide from a sample of ten purposively selected older persons in Eersterust, Tshwane. Data was analysed using the eight steps of Tesch (Creswell 2014:196), and data verification was done according to the model of Guba and Lincoln (Lietz & Zayas 2010:443). Ethical principles were upheld throughout the study, including informed consent, confidentiality, privacy, beneficence, and information management.
Results: Five main themes were generated from the data analysis. The first theme derived from the data analysis is the participants' perceptions and experiences of community violence. Two subthemes were generated from the data analysis under this theme, indicating that the participant's comprehension of the concept of community violence was seen as intimidation and robbery directed at older persons. The second subtheme entails the types of community violence that the participants experienced, which were directed at older persons in the community, and three categories generated, namely, intimidation, robberies, and indirect exposure to community violence. The second theme that emerged from data analysis was the challenges the participants experienced because of community violence. Challenges encountered were significant health and psychological issues, as well.
vi
In addition to feeling disrespected in their third community, the theme of the participants' perceptions and experiences about the involvement of stakeholders in the Eersterust community was regarded as very limited. The fourth theme discussed the participants' coping strategies with community violence, which involved avoidance and protective behaviours and collective activities of older persons to protect themselves. The last theme was suggestions on how community violence can be addressed, which entails the need for various collaborative efforts from governmental departments and social workers to support older persons in violent-stricken neighbourhoods. Recommendations for social work practice were mental and emotional support, improving access to social work assistance, and coordination between different stakeholders to assist older persons and follow-up services.M.
