Murmurings in a new landscape: exploring Biblical models of collaborative leadership for the first multi-site campus of the Faith Community Church of Hopkinton in Massachusetts

    No full text
Text in English, with summaries in English, Afrikaans and XhosaLeadership continually evolves. Therefore, leadership theories should adapt too. This research explores the biblical models of Deborah, Paul, and Jesus to find a theory of leadership application for the Faith Community Church of Hopkinton’s current context. A study of each biblical character reveals collaborative and emergent principles that can be used to develop a new approach to leadership development. These principles are adapted into a lay focused leadership development programme for the Faith Community Church of Hopkinton, a non-denominational church in Massachusetts, USA (www.faithma.org). A new leadership theory is presented including a new definition of leadership within the collaborative and emergent philosophies, a leadership cycle for applying leadership skills to the context of the leader, a leadership pipeline for the people of the Faith Community Church of Hopkinton and leadership toolboxes containing relevant leadership skills. These components are presented in a leadership matrix, as a framework for leadership training and development. While the focus of this research is on the Faith Community Church of Hopkinton, the leadership principles discovered could find application beyond this church community, in other faith communities, as well as other leadership environments such as business or government.Ubuholi buhlala buguquka. Abstract Background Dietary diversity is a good alternative measure of the nutritional adequacy and food security. The present study assessed the household dietary diversity status and its determinants among agricultural households in the Nkomazi Local Municipality, South Africa. Methods Out of 543 households in the study area that were supported by the Phezukomkhono Mlimi programme during the 2018/19 production season, only 355 met the inclusion criteria and consented to participate in this study. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, computation of the Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS) and the ordered logit regression model. Results Most of the respondents were elderly (56.10%) and females (59.44%). Most had low levels of education (43.66%) and low farm income (96.34%). In addition, most (65.35%) had large households. The majority (49.86%) of the households in the study area had a HDDS of 4.40, while the median HDDS in the study area was 3.90. Over the recall period, the majority of households consumed cereals (100%) and vegetable (78.31%) food types. Households headed by respondents with no formal education had lower odds (OR = 0.20; 95% CI 0.06–0.61) of having a higher dietary diversity compared to those headed by heads who had attained tertiary education. Households with income ≤ R3000.00 had lower odds (OR = 0.51; 95% CI 0.31–0.85) of having a higher dietary diversity as compared to those with income > R3000.00. Households with 1–5 members had higher odds (OR = 10.41; 95% CI 1.05–103.20) of having a higher dietary diversity as compared to larger households. With every unit increase in the age of the household head, the odds of the household of having a higher dietary diversity increased by 1.03 (OR = 1.03; 95% CI 1.01–1.05). Conclusion Since cereals and vegetables dominated the diets of the respondents, findings of this study highlight the need for improved access to sources of protein among the respondents. Therefore, there is a need for programmes to educate respondents on the dangers of inadequate nutrition (lacking in protein). Strategies that enhance farm income and the level of education among respondents should be prioritised because of their potential to boost Household Dietary Diversity (HDD) in the study area. Collaborations between different stakeholders, such as nutritionists, extension workers and researchers, should be encouraged so as to develop a holistic approach to improving the HDD in the study area

Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and ZuluRather than being antithetical to thinking or reasoning, current research would suggest that emotion has a critical role to play in the teaching and learning process, especially in the online environment. While a literature review will soon reveal the importance of emotion, either as directly experienced by the student or as orchestrated by the online facilitator in the creation of a safe and respectful learning environment, it is far more challenging to find any documented research that refers to the importance of a third-party presence dedicated to the emotional wellbeing of students in an online context – particularly in times of crisis such as that experienced during Covid-19. Such a presence exists in the form of a Programme Success Tutor (PST), a role integral to the ODL model of a leading South African private higher tertiary (PHT) organisation. Using a case study design and an interpretivist paradigm, 34 students – enrolled for distance studies with this PHT provider – shared their experiences of the PST role and the value they placed on having access to this affective support mechanism during the pandemic. Qualitative data was collected using a series of semi-structured and focus group interviews and then analysed using the thematic analysis model of Braun and Clark (2006; 2012). The findings suggest that while students appreciate the PST presence and the support these individuals provide, they do not make a clear and immediate connection between the role, the support, and their emotional wellbeing. Rather than undermining the importance of the PST as affective support, the findings provide the opportunity to broaden the scope of the role to now also include the forms of generic support valued by the participants in this study. Esikhundleni sokuphikisa ukucabanga noma ukucabanga, ucwaningo lwamanje lungaphakamisa ukuthi imizwa inendima ebalulekile okufanele iyidlale enqubweni yokufundisa nokufunda, ikakhulukazi endaweni ye-inthanethi. Towards inclusive archives thorough collection of sports athletic memories at Gauteng Provincial Archives repository

    No full text
Many archival scholars in South Africa and elsewhere lament of archives repositories that continue to reflect the activities of colonial masters, while excluding the memories of the previously marginalised. This is also the case with memories and stories of the athletic running community in South Africa, especially black athletes. Sport, including athletics, has been demonstrated as an instrument of solidarity of fragmented cultures. In South Africa, where sport is of such significance, it is still minimally represented in public archival holdings. Despite the mandate to transform the archival system in South Africa, evidence suggests that imperialism and colonisation, or rather domination of whites, have shaped and remains to shape the country’s archival holdings. Even after the tangled pursuit of decolonising archive collections that began in 1996 through the enactment of the new constitution, archives and the archival profession remain as they were, animated in all aspects of life by Western colonials. This qualitative study explores the feasibility of building inclusive archives through collection of sports memories at the Gauteng Provincial Archives Repository (GPAR). The study adopted oral history as a design and triangulated it with content analysis to mitigate prejudices that come with orality. Athlete participants were identified through snowball sampling and data was collected using both oral testimony interviews from athletes with first-hand information and document analysis of policy and legislative framework, as well as old newspaper cuttings. The study established that the provincial archives repository uses the GPARS Act enacted in 2013 to acquire non-public records. However, it was established that there is a tendency to perpetuate elitism by documenting mostly oral history of prominent members of the community with political power, while neglecting the stories of the minority and marginalised. As a result, records that can contribute to inclusive or total archives in South Africa are held in the care of a wide range of organisations, institutions and individuals. Indeed, the study revealed that of most historical athletes’ memories from their running careers, including awards ceremony certificates, trophies, winning medals, Springbok jerseys, newspaper clippings and pictures, are in their possession. However, there is no provincial register of such counter-archives. In this regard, athletes’ houses have been transformed into museums encompassing all their running memories, displayed all over their living rooms. Not only do athletes safeguard their memories in their homes but they even possess rich, forgotten history of legendary runners from the apartheid era, including that of Benoni Malaka, Humphrey Kgosi, Mathews Batswadi, Titus Mamabolo, Mathews Motshwarateu, Albert Moholwa, Lawrence Peu, Simon Peu and many more. As such, only few athletes oversee forgotten historical memories of most legendary runners and in some instances without specialised handling, also compounded by that; these archival memories are only accessible to those blessed enough to be close to these legendary runners. As the athletes have indicated their willingness to donate their memories, this study recommends that to build inclusive archives, these athletes’ memories should be secured through GPAR initiatives that aim to collect non-public records valuable to aspects of province history from institutions and individuals. This is an opportunity not to be missed to build inclusive archives using athletics sporting code as the starting point to close gaps that has existed for a long time.M. Inf.Information Scienc

    Get PDF
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop a health education guide to promote understanding and use of Isoniazid preventive therapy amongst HIV positive patients to decrease tuberculosis burden in HIV patients. DESIGN: This study used explanatory sequential mixed methods; quantitative data collection and analysis followed by qualitative data collection and analysis. METHODS: The quantitative phase was followed by data collection and analysis of the qualitative phase. Structured and semi-structured interview guide questionnaires were used to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. A total of 252 patients and 12 health care providers enrolled in quantitative and qualitative study respectively. Simple random sampling method was used for quantitative study. Descriptive statistics was used, and percentages were calculated. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions were applied to identify associations between variables. In subsequent qualitative section of the study, health care providers were interviewed. Qualitative data was organized in themes and analysis was done manually. RESULTS: Quantitative and qualitative data was analyzed subsequently. Of the 252 study participants, 56.7% of the participants were provided with tuberculosis preventive therapy. However, only 43.3% completed the prescribed treatment within the specified period. In logistic regression analysis, participants’ gender (P=0.032), residence (P=0.020), viral load suppression status (P=0.037), awareness and information on IPT benefit (P=0.000), awareness on IPT reduce the occurrence of tuberculosis (P=0.017), was found significantly associated with IPT acceptance. In addition, in an indepth interview of health care providers: patient’s refusal, non completion, inadequate providers counseling and patient education practices, misconceptions and misunderstandings of patients about IPT, fear of drug resistance, pill burden and drug side effect, lack of training and education guide were identified barriers for IPT implementation. CONCLUSION: Uptake of isoniazid preventive therapy in PLHIV in a tertiary hospital is sub-optimal and the completion rate among initiated IPT was found low. Intervention focused on initiation as well as completion of IPT needed. Consequently Health education guide developed to improve IPT uptake; client focused individual counseling; BCC and the need for initiation of short term TPT regimens were recommended.D. Resiliency amongst rural social workers in managing their experiences of work-related challenges

    No full text
Background of the study - The notion of resilience was first recognised in the field of psychopathology in the 1970s. The concept can be used to explain the individual responses to challenges and traumatic events which led many researchers to develop an interest in researching resiliency in different fields including social work. This interest was highlighted in the 90s when more social work researchers researched child protection social workers, this was because it was discovered that many social workers experienced high levels of stress due to trauma that is work-related. However, researchers focused more on urban areas and there has been a gap in literature on the resiliency of rural social workers because social work was noted to be a creation of the city as it started and developed its connection to urban matters hence it took many years before it turned to the needs of people living in rural areas, including those of social workers. Goal - The goal of this research study is to gain an in-depth understanding of the resilience amongst rural social workers in managing their experiences of work-related challenges. Methods - A qualitative research approach was employed to explore, describe, and contextualise the resiliency amongst rural social workers in managing their experiences of work-related challenges. Phenomenology was employed which focuses on the person’s experiences, perceptions, and feelings. Piloting the data collection instrument and testing the researcher’s interview skills was concluded prior to commencing with the actual data collection phase. Rural social workers meeting the criteria of inclusion were purposively sampled and semi-structured interviews, based on questions reflected in an interview guide, were conducted as the data collection method. The eight steps suggested by Creswell (2014:197) were applied for data analysis, and data verification was based on the model proposed by Lincoln and Guba (1985). Ethical considerations observed in the study are informed consent, confidentiality, anonymity, beneficence, management of information and debriefing of participants should the need arise. Results - Regardless of the challenges, trauma and hardship experienced by rural social workers, their experience in performing their daily duties showed resilience, as they tended to have the ability to look past their challenges to find solutions and possibilities in providing services to their clients and taking care of themselves. Contribution - This study contributed to the scientific body of knowledge that provides how rural social worker manage their work-related challenges.Umlando werhubhululo – Umbono omalungana nokubekezela wahlonitjhwa kokuthoma emkhakheni weze-psychopathology eminyakeni yabo-1970s. A framework to enhance integrated reporting through the quantification and valuation of non-financial capitals : a study of companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange

    Get PDF
The measurement of the impact of non-financial capitals on company value within the context of integrated reporting (IR) has remained an elusive empirical and practitioner question. The IR framework was designed to provide an improved corporate reporting approach to different stakeholders. However, the framework falls short of providing a tool that practitioners and stakeholders could use to determine how company value has changed over time. The main objective of this research was to produce an enhanced IR framework through an Augmented Integrated Reporting Model (AIRM), which was validated through panel data fixed effects regression models. The model tested the relationship of five capitals (financial, manufactured, intellectual, human, and social and relationship capitals) to company value. Through quantitative research methodology that utilised panel data fixed effects regression analysis in EViews software, the effect of each capital on company value was assessed. The AIRM demonstrates that social and relationship capital have a positive impact on market share price, EVA and TobinQ, while association to share price at book value is negative. Human capital has a positive relationship to market share price and a negative influence on EVA, TobinQ and share price at book value. Intellectual and manufactured capital have positive associations with the four dependent variables of company value. The findings of the study are in line with the IR concept, which states that capital may add, preserve, or diminish company value over time. Positive relationships mean the capital added value, while negative relationships mean company value was reduced. This research implies that a contribution has been made in resolving the challenge of quantifying and measuring non-financial capitals and how they impact company value. The study recommends that IR report preparers, report analysts, investors, academics and other relevant stakeholders use the AIRM to measure and manage the various capitals in the process of company value creation.D.B.L.Graduate School of Business Leadershi

    Wistfulness of Time

As Anaïs Nin said, “We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect”. No single collection of poems and short stories can encapsulate the range of human emotions both as part of living in the South African country and beyond its borders. Nevertheless, Wistfulness of Time offers a selection of poems and short stories that embody the theme of nostalgia and the idea of memory. From artists such as Petrus van Staden, Busisiwe Mahlangu, Janice Kudakwashe Mamukwa, Shaleen Jacobs, Thendo Netshivhera, Nivonne Jackson and many other students at the University of South Africa this anthology was born; the first of many to come. Despite the diversity of voices and the various depictions of the theme, these students have been successful in giving a voice to and describing the human condition. They are well on their way of carving their mark alongside the many great artists of South Africa and the world.Afrikaans and Theory of LiteratureDepartmental Research Fund; Department of Afrikaans and Theory of Literature; Unis

Blended funding model : an option to close the small and medium enterprise (sme) funding gap in South Africa

    No full text
One of the constraints faced by owners of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) around the world is a lack of access to external funding. The majority of South African black-owned enterprises experience funding challenges arising from a lack of collateral security and a lack of trust among financiers that such enterprises would prove to be sustainable. The failure of SMEs to access external financing from private and public financing institutions has resulted in a funding gap. SMEs also fail to access external financing because of mismatches between demand and supply. Without improved access to external funding, the South African SME sector will be unable to realise the government’s goal to create about 11 million jobs by 2030, as stated in the National Development Plan (NDP). This study reviewed literature on entrepreneurship theories, capital structure theories and entrepreneurship practice in South Africa. The literature review pays attention to entrepreneurial models, the behaviours and characteristics of entrepreneurs, and current SME funding models and options. This research adopted an ethnographic design using mixed methods. Purposive sampling was used to collect data using unstructured in-depth interviews and questionnaire techniques. 24 interviews were conducted during the qualitative phase. The survey phase attracted 160 participants. The thematic data analysis method perfectly guided the analysis of data obtained during the interviews. The blended finance model offers practical options to accelerate SME funding and hence to close the existing funding gap. Improved collaboration and partnerships between the public and private sectors are vital for both improved access to funding and the creation of market access for SME products and services. The study further recommends the establishment of SME/entrepreneurial support structures in all nine provinces of South Africa to improve the accessibility of support and advisory services such as incubation, mentorship, product development support, funding, access to markets, accounting services, access to technology and office space. Improved collaboration and partnerships between the public and private sectors are vital for the success of the proposed model.Xin'wana xa swisivelo leswi vini va mabindzu lamatsongo na ma le xikarhi va langutaneke naswona (tiSME) emisaveni hinkwayo i ku pfumala mfikelelo eka mpfuneto wa le handle wa swa timali. “If It’s Yellow, Let It Mellow, If It’s Brown, Let It Drown”: Examining the Health Effects of Drought-Induced Water Rationing for Sanitary Needs

    No full text
This paper focuses on the impacts of water stress on health outcomes. It specifically investigates the health effects of insufficiency of water for sanitary needs in drought-affected households. A focus group discussion that drew medical experts from such fields as medicine, virology, and microbiology was conducted to collect data. The findings of the study show that there is a possibility of vulnerability to negative health outcomes such as Cholera, Diarrhea, and respiratory problems by households that lack the necessary levels of water for domestic, sanitation, and hygiene uses. It is therefore important that individuals and households susceptible to the vagaries of drought be aware of this relationship so that they may forge necessary adaptive measures such as the use of purifiers, hand and surface sanitizers, and disinfectants to mitigate the health effects of a drought that are related to inadequate water use for sanitary purposes.Institute for Social and Health Studies (ISHS
