Assessing the use of electronic data recovery in e-procurement fraud investigation

    No full text
This study explores the significance of utilising electronic data recovery applications in e-Procurement fraud investigations. Data was collected by conducting in-depth interviews with forensic investigators, senior forensic investigators, senior forensic audit specialists and managers at the Group Audit and Risk (GAR) department of the City of Tshwane (CoT). The in-depth interviews provide a comprehensive understanding of participants’ experiences relating to the utilisation of electronic data recovery applications in e-Procurement fraud investigations conducted by the GAR. Moreover, a review of international best practices provided an enhanced understanding of the investigation of e-Procurement fraud. The research findings indicate shortcomings in the GAR's effectiveness in utilising electronic data recovery applications in e-Procurement fraud investigations, which limits its impact on the investigation. Based on these findings, a theoretical framework that outlines best practices of electronic data recovery in e-Procurement fraud investigations in the form of progressive stages is proposed, thus contributing to the current body of knowledge.Nyakisiso ye e nyakisisa bohlokwa bja go somisa didiriswa tsa tsosoloso ya datha ya ilektroniki ka dinyakisisong tsa bofora bja i-phorokhuwamente. An assessment of security measures at shopping malls : case study from Durban, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa

    No full text
A sharp rise in crimes at shopping malls in KwaZulu-Natal and other provinces around the country has prompted shopping mall owners to keep shopping malls safe. Some of the crimes that shopping malls experience include armed robberies, customer robberies, parking lot crimes, assaults, store holdups, shopliftings, and property crimes. Shoppers and retailers at malls are concerned with their safety. Criminals commit crimes for numerous reasons, and the situations are always different. In this context, shopping mall owners must ensure that improved security measures are in place to maximise safety by considering different facets of security and mitigating risks. Security measures are the first line of defence at shopping malls and, when properly implemented, will comprehensively meet the security objectives of the facility. This study aimed to assess the security measures at shopping malls in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, to make recommendations for improvement.M. Tech. Sithwelenzima series 10 – Abafaz’ ababini ebusuku namanzi (women returning home at twilight with water) (110cm x 146cm) Photography.SITHWELENZIMA BAZALIKAZI “Sithwelenzima Bazalikazi series 2022” (we are struggling fellow mothers) is composed of photographs of staged performances of myself and sometimes with other women performing challenging mundane chores. Sithwele (we are carrying) nzima (heavy or difficult) Bazalikazi (mothers). Zala (verb = give birth) Nzima can also mean experiencing challenging problems, translated to mean carrying something heavy. The heaviness does not necessary refer to heavy material or physical load, but also emotional and spiritual. The women in these photographs are carrying buckets on their heads supposedly filled with water, heavy boxes characterising women’s struggles as providers, nurturers, and in this situation working and singing together symbolising solidarity. They are also walking in darkness portrayed by the moon and the stars, sometimes led by a heavily pregnant woman (the artist) as seen in “Sithwele nzima series 1, 2022”, a print which interprets/summarises this series. The episode portrayed in this series was a 10 kilometres journey to and from a waterfall in Kwazulu Natal (KZN) Province of South Africa. At the waterfall we performed a cleansing scene where we were immersed in water scooping and throwing it with the buckets metaphorically driving away all evils that surround us as black women in our respective habitats and daily living. These evils include gender-based violence (GBV) which leads to single or divorced women headed households. The objective of this series was to highlight these struggles by appraising black women’s strengths as breadwinners even though this important responsibility is hardly recognised or is under acknowledge in our society. When the participants were asked to participate in this event, they were told that the buckets will be filled with essential food items, and after the event they will take them home. Their response was “whatever that is will help us feed our children”, and they participated diligently after being briefed about the objective and significance of the project. The 10-kilometre walk with heavy buckets on our heads epitomised black women day-to-day struggles for survival. Although we all knew we were going to a waterfall, but we were not aware of how far it was, but depended on our leader, and once we had started walking, we were determined to reach the waterfall. This determination is testimony to women’s strength which is usually overlooked, because women are said to be weak and just emotional beings. This belief is supported by patriarchal belief systems and several other socially constructed cultural norms. This is another distinguishing characteristic of women in general which make them achieve what they set out to do, and they sometimes achieve these outcomes without prior knowledge. An example is nurturing of children which they perform without a formula, if they are lucky to have mentors learn by seeing, or just by doing. My initial plan as the artist was to perform with fellow women something that symbolised ordinary black women day-to-day chores especially those associated with women from rural areas, hence the water buckets. I had consciously envisaged a rural background where the July 2022 KZN floods had stricken. The waterfall was located near this environment, and when we were walking, we could still see the damage caused by the floods. The reason for this choice was to acknowledge the fact that once again the most affected people by these floods were black women from rural areas. Thus, my work advocates for black women’s/mothers’ struggles which are not acknowledge and sometimes are used to discriminate them by silencing them through accepted cultural norms. My performance deliberately portrays me as an ordinary woman because I have experienced all these struggles in one way or another, and revoking them is not only showing my strength, but appraising this unacknowledged phenomenon, giving the women represented their deserved agency. Set within intersectional feminism my work seeks to not only appraise these women’s struggle but to showcase them towards a transformative change. My artworks are meant to be a beam of hope and optimism for the younger generation encouraging the youth in general (girls and boys equally) to reconsider and choose to live their lives and cohabit in respect with one another.Art and MusicN

Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and ZuluThe proliferation of digital devices and services has fundamentally changed customers’ shopping behaviour and has occasioned a new type of retailing called omnichannel retailing. Omnichannel retailing requires retailers to completely transform, moving away from managing processes in silos towards offering fully integrated and seamless shopping experiences across all the retailers’ physical and digital channels and touchpoints. The imperative to create seamless shopping experiences has rippled through every part of the retail supply chain. Accordingly, internal supply chain integration (SCI) has become central to a retailer’s ability to integrate the vast network of channels and functions that need to collaborate to create an omnichannel shopping experience. However, retailers highlight numerous difficulties when transforming their supply chains from previous types of multichannel retailing to omnichannel retailing. By applying the strategic management theory of the dynamic capabilities view (DCV) this study explores the question of which dynamic capabilities facilitate the internal SCI of omnichannel retailers. To answer this question, the study employed a multimethod qualitative methodology. First, an in-depth literature review was conducted to identify dynamic capabilities within the scope of this study. Based on this process, a coding frame was developed. The coding frame was used to conduct a content analysis of 40 South African omnichannel retailers’ integrated annual reports (IARs). Second, 17 semi-structured interviews were conducted with top managers employed at South African omnichannel retailers. The interview data were transcribed and then analysed employing reflexive thematic analysis. Following the analysis of these two datasets, the findings were triangulated and a conceptual framework of dynamic capabilities that facilitate the internal SCI of omnichannel retailers was developed. The conceptual framework identified 14 dynamic capabilities that facilitate internal SCI, and elaborated on how each capability promotes internal SCI. These findings make a unique contribution as managers can use the list of dynamic capabilities to appraise their internal competencies to identify and prioritise the development of capabilities that facilitate competitiveness and adaptability in an ever-changing omnichannel environment. Furthermore, these findings make a unique contribution by being among the first to take an end-to-end approach to the investigation of omnichannel supply chain integration.Die toename in digitale toestelle en dienste het die koopgedrag van kliënte grondig verander en tot ’n nuwe wyse van kleinhandel aanleiding gegee. Best practices for assessing parental alienation: perspectives of clinical psychologist's working as experts in a South African setting

    Get PDF
The occurrence of parental alienation and its associated traits have long been discussed in literature. The pathological alignment of a child with a parent in a high-conflict divorce has been independently studied and characterised by several clinicians. Richard Gardner first used the term parental alienation syndrome (PAS) in the 1980s, and he defined PAS as a child's obsession with criticising a parent caused by indoctrinating behaviour of the other parent. The criticism against PAS includes that it is a contentious, poorly understood, and researched construct that is mostly employed in the context of child custody battles. It is claimed that it takes the form of a "child's campaign of denigration against a parent" (Gardner, 2001)This study has found this criticism to be frequently exaggerated and unfounded, as findings show that in high-conflict divorces, the alienating parent does engage in conscious and unconscious behaviour that shapes the child's perception of the alienated parent unfavourably; and this does impact on the child’s emotional wellbeing as well as that of the alienated parent. This indicates that PAS is an avenue for further research considering its prominent influence on family dynamics in South Africa.. A qualitative study was undertaken to explore best practices for assessing parental alienation. It addressed the perspectives of mental health professionals working as experts in a South African setting. The study took place in the Gauteng province of South Africa. The expert participants were selected using purposive sampling, and data was gathered using semi-structured interviews. The data obtained was analysed using qualitative content analysis. According to the expert participants in this study, in order to identify PAS, the evaluator needs a grounded understanding of the conceptualisation of parental alienation and should be able to differentiate parental alienation from the concepts of gatekeeping and estrangement, which may co-occur with parental alienation. A series of clinical interviews, psychometric assessments and parent-child observations have to be conducted, and the evaluator should collect collateral to further strengthen the assessment procedure. The most common instruments used in the evaluation for adults were the MMPI-3, MCMI-IV and PAI and the most common assessments used to evaluate children were the Draw-A- Person, Kinetic Family Drawing, Bene Anthony Family Relations Test and the Childrens Apperception Test. This study provided to be useful to novice evaluators as this can serve as a guideline for the assessment of parental alienation for the novice evaluator. This study only included clinical psychologist, further studies should include all mental health professionals that deals with parental alienation for a richer and more comprehensive output. A compilation of an assessment for parental alienation and common training for the legal professionals and psycho-legal professionals will be beneficial to this divisive field.M.A. (Clinical Psychology)Psycholog

The theory-practice imbalance in the electrical engineering subject at a technical vocational education and training college : implications for student training

    Get PDF
Abstracts in English, Sotho and Northern SothoThe purpose of this study was to explore the theory-practice imbalance in the TVET College programmes at Moses-Kotane Local Municipality in the North-West Province. The problem faced by the students at the TVET Colleges, especially in the Electrical Engineering programme, is that they find it difficult to comprehend practicals as they cannot relate it to the theory. The problem emanates from the lecturers who are not artisans and therefore find it difficult to conduct practicals. I interviewed 16 participants, i.e. 10 students, two lecturers, one Head of Department, and three host employers. From this study, it was revealed that some students do not have sufficient Electrical Engineering background, there is lack of resources for balancing theory and practice, and thus problems for students in conducting their practicums. It was discovered that some lecturers, who are not yet artisans and without relevant qualifications to lecture, contribute to the poor academic performance of students. From the findings, I recommended that all relevant stakeholders should have a sound knowledge and a strategy to balance theory and practice. The College needs to allocate sufficient funds for lecturing and practicum purposes. The lecturers without relevant qualifications need to obtain those qualifications through financial assistance from the College. The Electrical Engineering workshops need to be renovated so that there is sufficient space for students and that there is a free flow of traffic. The lecturers should prepare students thoroughly prior to their placement at workplaces. Abstract in English and TswanaThe introduction of Open Educational Resources (OERs) has come to the fore as a solution for enriching teaching and learning practices at universities. OERs have forced many universities to adopt new ways of teaching and learning by integrating them in their teaching practices. Accordingly, this study sought to explore the use of OER by lecturers at teacher education faculties in South African Universities. However, the continued dependence by universities on printed materials like course hand-outs, despite the availability of volumes of OERs on the net, is still a cause for concern. The study concentrated on lecturers from the three public universities in South Africa, namely, the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), University of Mpumalanga (UMP) and the University of South Africa (UNISA). The study combined the two theories namely Siemens (2004) Connectivism learning theory and Roger’s (2003) diffusion of innovation theory (DOI) to the research findings to evaluate their relevancy. The study used an exploratory mixed-method, informed by a pragmatic paradigm, to explore the use of OERs by lecturers at selected South African Universities. The exploratory mixed-method investigation consisted of semi-structured interviews conducted with twenty-three lecturers from the three participating universities and a closed structured questionnaire drawing response from one hundred and twenty one (n=121) lecturers from the three participating South African universities. The findings from this exploratory mixed-method indicate that though the lecturers are aware of OERs and their benefits, their understanding and knowledge of OER and its use was inadequate. There is also evidence of lecturers’ self-initiated use of OER principles in their daily teaching and learning practices. Most of the lecturers who participated were eager to attain training workshops that will enable them to use OER in their daily teaching and learning activities. The study revealed that lecturers’ reluctance to use OER in teaching and learning was a result of three main challenges, namely, little or no understanding of OERs, inadequate access to the internet and technological tools and lack of awareness on OER licenses and copyrights. The crafted OER distribution framework proposes that the 5R principles of OER can be central in lecturers’ use of OERs in teaching and learning. The little or no effectiveness of the 5R principles of OER in daily teaching and learning practices indicates the need for the review of current teaching and learning policies. The study provides recommendations for universities over and above the suggestions for future research.Kitsiso ya OERs tlisiwa jaaka tharabololo go humisa tlhaelo ya kitso le thutelatirong/ katiso mo yunibesithi. The study aimed to assess and evaluate the extent to which Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) principles and guidelines are adhered to in 6 South African junior mining companies. A report issued by the South African Chamber of Mines (2017) for the annual year 2015/2016 recommends that CSR guidelines and principles are vital for ensuring sustained growth, development and profitability in emerging and junior mining companies. CSR principles enable companies to adhere to business ethics, good leadership and good corporate governance principles. The study aimed to use quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and analysis in the study. As part of the quantitative aspect of study, data was collected from 439 employees of junior mines by using a pre-tested, validated and structured questionnaire of study. As part of the qualitative aspect of study, data was collected from 12 officials who are responsible for CSR related activities in the 6 junior mines by conducting individual in-depth interviews by using a tape recorder. Interviews were later transcribed, coded and tallied. Quantitative data analysis was performed by using methods such as confirmatory factor analysis, ordered logit regression analysis and structural equations modelling. Qualitative data analysis was performed by using thematic analysis and triangulation. The study found that 52% of respondents were satisfied with the extent to which junior mining companies adhered to CSR guidelines and principles in the course of conducting routine mining operations. Adherence to CSR guidelines and principles was significantly influenced by 3 predictor variables. These factors were the ability to produce better products by adhering to CSR guidelines and principles, a track record of helping out local communities, and the promotion of awareness about good deeds. Similar results were obtained from personal interviewsD. B. L.Business Managemen
