Representations of the post -2000 Zimbabwean socio-economic and political crisis in selected Ndebele short stories

    No full text
The study explores how Ndebele short stories portray political, social and economic crisis in post-2000 Zimbabwe. The post-2000 period is commonly referred to as a crisis epoch where everything collapsed. The study adopts the qualitative research inquiry that utilises textual and narrative analyses of selected Ndebele short stories. Furthermore, the study also uses critical reviews from published and unpublished secondary sources from various disciplines, journal articles and dissertations that are corroborated by data obtained through questionnaires and interviews. The conceptual framework of this research is informed by Historical Criticism and Resilience theories which are significant in the exposition of the theme of crisis in Ndebele short stories. Historical Criticism is engaged in this study to illustrate that literature is responsive to historical, socio-economic and political developments. The Resilience Theory is adopted in order to understand the themes of courage, tenacity and perseverance in the wake of the crisis. The study demonstrated that Ndebele short stories depict the post-2000 Zimbabwean crisis as constituted by political, economic and social disasters which had grave repercussions for the nation’s stability and development. On the political side of the crisis, Ndebele short stories show that the nation was afflicted by an extraordinary degree of willful political violence and barbarity sponsored by the ruling party in order for it to remain in power. This study also established that the political crisis of post-2000 in Zimbabwe triggered a catastrophic and protracted economic collapse that led to livelihood challenges never experienced before. Many people could hardly sustain their households due to company closures, retrenchment, unemployment, a worthless currency and rampant hyperinflation. The study clearly articulated that the economic crisis and poverty led to the reality of HIV and AIDS pandemic as vulnerable characters, especially women, adopted risky sexual behaviours in order to keep body and soul together. The analysis of Ndebele short stories established that Zimbabweans are resilient people because of their resourcefulness, ingenuity and innovativeness in navigating the multi-faceted crises. The study of the short stories also shows that Zimbabwe reached the nadir of its post -2000 social, political and economic crisis because of the failure of leadership.D. Phil. Effectiveness of phytoremediation in water treatment using sunflower plants (Helianthus annuus) in Buhera District, Manicaland Province, Zimbabwe

    No full text
The greatest battle that the earth has to consistently and persistently fight to maintain its natural purity is mainly human-induced pollution, especially of natural water bodies like oceans, seas, rivers and underground reservoirs. This research was conceptualised and motivated by the ever-increasing problem of insufficient and poor water quality in Zimbabwe, Manicaland province in general and Buhera district in particular. The purpose of the study was to assess the effectiveness of environmentally-friendly water treatment technologies to meet Sustainable Development Goal number 6, which aims to “ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all” by the year 2030. While the industrial revolution has brought with it massive improvements in water treatment methods that are both faster and effective, most rural communities in the developing world have not benefited from this human ingenuity and thus continue to grapple with the challenges of access to clean and safe drinking water. The use of sunflower plants (Helianthus annuus) for domestic water treatment as an alternative to conventional and top-notch technologies was considered very necessary for water treatment especially at the household level. The research design was predominantly experimental and observational thus generating primary data. To achieve this, a set of objectives was laid out while relevant hypotheses were also propounded. Analysis of raw water collected from different sources of domestic water within the study area was done for the three seasons prevalent in the area. Collected data was systematically arranged in tables and graphs and then subjected to both descriptive statistics (means and standard deviations) and inferential statistical analysis including ANOVA single factor as well as a correlation of analysis for hypothesis testing. The three microbial pathogens namely; Escherichia coli, faecal coliform and total coliforms were subjected to extracts from four sunflower plant parts, which included; seed, leaf, stem and root tissues. The extracts were obtained using five solvents that are; chloroform, ethanol, hexane, water and acetone. The highest potential was obtained from chloroform extract followed by ethanol, water and acetone while there was no recorded effect from the solvent hexane. Throughout the experiments, sunflower seed extracts showed a greater effect on all three bacterial species. The anti-microbial properties of the sunflower seed extracts portrayed a high mean zone of inhibition of 5.7 mm and 6.3 mm on faecal coliforms and E. coli bacteria respectively. In addition, the coagulant properties of sunflower extracts were tested against turbidity and pH with different dosages of the seed, root, stem and leaf extracts at different time intervals. The seed extract was found to have an optimum dosage of 4 g at 80 minutes with turbidity removal efficiencies of 95%. The effectiveness of the extracts varied from season to season, with summer having the higher percentages while winter had the lowest percentage reductions. Results revealed that sunflower seed extract should be the first option in choosing natural materials as anti-microbial and coagulant agents. Therefore, the study concludes that sunflower seed extracts can be used as anti-microbial and coagulant agents at the household level. However, an evaluation of the toxicity of the concentration of the treatment extracts to humans based on in vivo experiments is very important to ascertain their effectiveness and use at the household level.Ph. Title and text in English, with abstract and keywords in English, Venda and TsongaThe historical and commercial value of museums underscore the significance of implementing adequate security. The historical value is represented by the cultural legacy in works of art, artefacts and books that are transferrable to future generations. The commercial value is reflected by the attractiveness of museums to local and foreign patrons. To preserve the identities, themes and value of museums strong security to mitigate risks should be implemented. The aim of this study was to examine the current security measures for the protection of museums in Gauteng, South Africa in order to develop a Security Model for Museums. To focus on this aim, the following specific objectives were pursued: (a) to evaluate the possible risk exposure of both visitors and museum assets in museums; (b) to discuss the impact of different types of security measures; and (c) to determine the implication of stolen artefacts on museums. To achieve the research objectives, a mixed methods study with an exploratory design was deployed to collect the field data. The purposive nonprobability sampling techniques was used to select the study sample size n=40 respondents comprising museum managers, security officers and curators. The response rate of the respondents was 63% which was adequate for producing valid results. The data collection methods used to gather data were interviews conducted with sampled respondents and observation using an audit checklist. The data was analysed using thematic data analysis and descriptive statistical analysis. The findings on museum risks that affected visitors and museum assets included theft, vandalism, burglary/robbery, fire and flooding. Regarding existing museum security measures, the following measures were identified: organisational factors such as a security plan, security policy, emergency plan, maintenance plan, access control procedures and security personnel. The non-technological security measures comprised security fences and lockable gates, fire equipment and security officers, while digital security technology included CCTV systems, intruder systems, biometric systems and scanning machines. Based on the findings, it was recommended that an integrated, multi-layered security system that should be designed and customised for museums according to their risk particular exposures.Ho sumbedziswa u ḓo khwaṱhisedzwa tsireledzo kha ndeme ya ḓivhazwakale na vhubindudzi ha midziyamu. Fischer-Tropsch synthesis fixed bed reactor intensification

    No full text
A 2D pseudo-homogeneous fixed bed reactor model was developed using ANSYS Fluent, based on an actual bench-scale Fischer-Tropsch reactor. The single-tube reactor had a diameter of 0.05m, which is representative of the diameters used in industrial applications. Using a specially-designed temperature measurement, the detailed temperature distribution in the bench-scale reactor was reported for the first time. A position-dependent heat transfer coefficient, which is considered more accurate for temperature predictions, was applied. The model was validated against the experimental data, including both the reaction results and the measured temperatures, which obtained with a Co-based catalyst under conditions of 2MPa and 458K at various syngas partial pressures and space velocities. The model was qualified to carry out temperature-prediction related simulations, for example the following studies of Fischer-Tropsch reactor intensification approaches. The changes in the maximum temperature in the bed and hot spot region are discussed in terms of different N2 flowrates and gas hourly space velocity rates. The inferred properties within the reactor were analysed to obtain insight into how to increase the production capacity of the reactor. One Fischer-Tropsch reactor intensification approach proposed was tubular reactor internals with a simple structure and easy installation, in order to suppress hot spot formation in the catalyst bed. The reactor internals were designed to adjust the effective inner diameter in the front region of the catalyst bed where the hot spot was most likely to form. A bench-scale CFD reactor model was employed to verify the performance of the reactor internals under Fischer-Tropsch reaction conditions and to optimize its key parameters: neck diameter and frustum cavity height. The simulation results for the optimised reactor internals showed that: he maximum temperature rise decreased by as much as 22.6%; the change in the rate of CO conversion was less than 2.13%; the C3+ product selectivity increased slightly. The design of reactors for small scale Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) plants needs a different approach to that used for mega plants, because of the drivers from environmental, economic and social aspects. A novel reactor design approach for small-scale FTS reactors was proposed, in which the reactor diameter was optimised for the maximum productivity of heavy hydrocarbon products at a given temperature rise limit. The catalyst activity and the space velocity were varied so as to keep the maximum temperature in the catalyst bed at a specified value. Using a multi-tube fixed bed reactor of given dimensions as an example, CFD simulation was carried out to verify the proposed design approach. According to the simulation results for a single tube, the highest productivity was achieved with the reactor tube with the largest diameter. However, when looking at the multi-tube fixed bed reactor itself, because fewer tubes could be fitted into the reactor as the reactor tube diameter increased, the results for maximum productivity became more complicated. According to the simulation results, a maximum heavy hydrocarbon productivity of 15.3kg/h can be achieved in a multi-tube reactor fitted into a commercial container when using: an optimal tube diameter of 3/4’; a SV of 300h-1; a required catalyst activity of 695% of that of the base case. The multi-plate reactor, of which the spaces between the plates were used for thermal fluid and catalyst alternately, integrates the fixed bed reactor with the plate heat exchanger. The proposed reactor design approach was applied in the optimization of the plate pitch of a multi-plate reactor with the same aforementioned given dimension for maximum productivity at the same temperature rise limit. Similarly, the catalyst activity and the space velocity were set as parameters to adjust the temperature peak in the catalyst bed. The simulation results showed that a maximum productivity of 21.3kg/h can be obtained in the multi-plate reactor that meets the specification requirements of a containerized FT application with a 0.5 inch plate distance and 300 h-1, while the required catalyst activity is 582% of that of the base case.Ph. In this study, the needs of patients regarding self-care practices after mechanical prosthesis heart valve (MPHV) replacement surgery in Namibia are described. The objectives of the study were to explore the needs of patients regarding self-care practices after MPHV replacement surgery in Namibia and to identify the challenges faced by these patients. A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, and contextual research design was used. The study context was the Khomas and Oshana regions of Namibia. Purposive sampling was used, and 11 participants took part in the study. They had MPHV replacement surgery not more than a year before the time that data were collected. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data and interviews were recorded and transcribed. Qualitative data analyses were done using Creswell’s data analysis steps, and four themes emerged, namely self-care needs; challenges; issues related to healthcare service delivery and patient education needs. The study revealed self-care needs of the patients; challenges encountered in practising self-care and the need to improve the health care delivery after MPHV. Recommendations for further research, healthcare facilities and healthcare professionals as well as policies were made. During implementation of the findings of the study, a patient education document could be designed based on the outcomes of the study.M.A. (Health Studies)Health Studie

Bank development and unemployment in Kenya: An empirical investigation

    No full text
This study has empirically investigated the impact of bank development on unemployment in Kenya, based on time-series data spanning from 1991 to 2019. Using the ARDL bounds testing approach, the results of the study have revealed that in Kenya, the impact of bank development on unemployment, though time-invariant, depends largely on the proxy used to measure the level of bank development. Consistent with expectations, bank development – as proxied by liquid liabilities, bank deposits, deposit money bank assets and the banking development index – has been found to have a negative impact on unemployment in Kenya. However, when bank development is proxied by the domestic credit to private sector by banks, its impact on unemployment was found to be statistically insignificant. These results were found to apply consistently in the long run and in the short run.Colleges of Economic and Management Science

Influence of library services on the learning activities of distance learning students in selected universities in Ghana

    No full text
Access to required learning resources and services in higher learning is a prerequisite for effective learning and the achievement of required learning outcomes. The purpose of the study was to examine the influence of library services on the learning activities of distance learners. The study was conducted among the two pioneers of dual university education in Ghana: the University of Education, Winneba, and the University of Cape Coast. The study adopted Astin’s (1993) I-E-O model and ACRL standards for distance-learning library services to guide the study. The study was grounded on the pragmatic paradigm with the sequential explanatory mixed-methods design. Respondents were selected using the multi-stage and purposive sampling techniques. A total of 1170 students were involved in the quantitative study, while the qualitative study included 12 students and six librarians. The data were descriptively analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 22, and thematic analysis. The study discovered a significant relationship between library promotional activities and the use of library resources and services. Meanwhile, there was no statistical correlation found between information literacy competencies and the use of library resources and services. Further, the finding established a positive relationship between improved learning activities and the use of library resources and services and distance learners. The study recommended collaboration between stakeholders, regular review of distance-library services, and assessment of information needs of distance learners to improve standards in the provision of and access to library resources and services to enhance the learning activities of distance learners. Finally, the study proposed a model for the successful use of library resources and services by distance learners.(D Litt et Phil) Information ScienceInformation Scienc

The effectiveness of adult education programmes:an auto-ethnographic case study of a female correctional centre, South Africa

    No full text
Text in English with summaries in Afrikaans and XhosaAdult education programmes provided in some correctional centres in South Africa have raised a debate about their effectiveness. In attempting to understand the effectiveness of the programmes offered, a study was initiated to explore the effectiveness of these programmes in general, with specific emphasis on adult education and training (AET). The study used the andragogical principles advocated by Malcolm Knowles and Frederick Herzberg's two-factor or motivational hygiene theories. A qualitative approach using interviews and an open-ended questionnaire was used to collect data from the two offender-learners and the two adult educators, respectively. The researcher used a journaling method to narrate her 12-year incarceration experiences and her journey as an adult learner and her peer-teaching as an adult educator through an auto-ethnographic research design. The results revealed that adult learners are positively motivated to study while still incarcerated because of various factors. The study showed that the opportunity and benefits gained through correctional education provision far outweigh the challenges and negative factors.Volwasse opvoedingsprogramme wat in sommige korrektiewe sentrums in Suid-Afrika aangebied word, het 'n debat oor die doeltreffendheid daarvan ontketen. Is Metaverse in education a blessing or a curse: a combined content and bibliometric analysis

    No full text
Abstract The Metaverse has been the centre of attraction for educationists for quite some time. This field got renewed interest with the announcement of social media giant Facebook as it rebranding and positioning it as Meta. While several studies conducted literature reviews to summarize the findings related to the Metaverse in general, no study to the best of our knowledge focused on systematically summarizing the finding related to the Metaverse in education. To cover this gap, this study conducts a systematic literature review of the Metaverse in education. It then applies both content and bibliometric analysis to reveal the research trends, focus, and limitations of this research topic. The obtained findings reveal the research gap in lifelogging applications in educational Metaverse. The findings also show that the design of Metaverse in education has evolved over generations, where generation Z is more targeted with artificial intelligence technologies compared to generation X or Y. In terms of learning scenarios, there have been very few studies focusing on mobile learning, hybrid learning, and micro learning. Additionally, no study focused on using the Metaverse in education for students with disabilities. The findings of this study provide a roadmap of future research directions to be taken into consideration and investigated to enhance the adoption of the Metaverse in education worldwide, as well as to enhance the learning and teaching experiences in the Metaverse
