In search of experimental evidence on Scratch programming and students’ achievements in the first-year college computing class? Consider these datasets
This article presents datasets representing the demographics and achievements of computer science students in their first programming courses (CS1). They were collected from a research project comparing the effects of a constructionist Scratch programming and the conventional instructions on the achievements of CS1 students from selected Nigerian public colleges. The project consisted of two consecutive quasi-experiments. In both cases, we adopted a non-equivalent pretest-posttest control group design and multistage sampling. Institutions were selected following purposive sampling, and those selected were randomly assigned to the Scratch programming class (experimental) and the conventional (comparison) class. A questionnaire and pre- and post-introductory programming achievement tests were used to collect data. To strengthen the research design, we used the Coarsened Exact Matching (CEM) algorithm to create matched samples from the unmatched data obtained from both experiments.
Future studies can use these data to identify the factors influencing CS1 students' performance, investigate how programming pedagogies or tools affect CS1 students' achievements in higher education, identify important trends using machine learning techniques, and address additional research ideas.Institute for Science and Technology Education (ISTE)TETFund, Nigeria & UNISA M n D research gran
Analysis of international students' health determinants in Australia
The purpose of this study was to explore immigration and the vulnerability of
immigrants to mental health problems with a focus on international students in a
small town in Australia. A sample of 97 international students in the town enrolled in
the study. This research question was examined using data obtained from
questionnaires to explore the students’ perspectives on migration and its
implications on mental health. In-depth interviews were utilised to ensure the
collection of narratives to help explain the conclusions gathered from quantitative
data. Major findings of the study include that students suffer from multiple forms of
mental conditions which stem from the challenges of adapting to a new environment
and lack of social support. The study found that there are multiple causes for mental
health problems among international students. International students face a more
stressful lifestyle than their native counterparts because of the stressors they
encounter during adaptation and assimilation. It also showed that there is a strong
correlation between a lack of acculturation, socio-economic support, self-esteem,
and mental health. In terms of recommendations, universities should commit to
enhancing acculturation, social support, and self-esteem among international
students to reduce isolation and improve and preserve their health, according to the
recommendations. Future research on social isolation of subcultures is also
recommended to increase acculturation and stress, as well as their effects on
international students.M.P.H.Health Studie
Adsorption mechanism and modeling of radionuclides and heavy metals onto ZnO nanoparticles: a review
Abstract
The contamination of environmental waters with heavy metals and radionuclides is increasing because of rapid industrial and population growth. The removal of these contaminants from water via adsorption onto metal nanoparticles is an efficient and promising technique to abate the toxic effects associated with these pollutants. Among metal nanoparticle adsorbents, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) have received tremendous attention owing to their biocompatibility, affordability, long-term stability, surface characteristics, nontoxicity, and powerful antibacterial activity against microbes found in water. In this review, we considered the adsorption of heavy metals and radionuclides onto ZnONPs. We examined the isotherm, kinetic, and thermodynamic modeling of the process as well as the adsorption mechanism to provide significant insights into the interactions between the pollutants and the nanoparticles. The ZnONPs with surface areas (3.93 to 58.0 m2/g) synthesized by different methods exhibited different adsorption capacities (0.30 to 1500 mg/g) for the pollutants. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were most suitable for the adsorption process. The Langmuir separation factor indicated favorable adsorption of all the pollutants on ZnONPs. The pseudo-second-order kinetics presented the best for the adsorption of the adsorbates with regression values in the range of 0.986–1.000. Spontaneous adsorption was obtained in most of the studies involving endothermic and exothermic processes. The complexation, precipitation, ion exchange, and electrostatic interactions are the probable mechanisms in the adsorption onto ZnONPs with a predominance of complexation. The desorption process, reusability of ZnONPs as well as direction for future investigations were also presented
The acquisition of the English prepositional phrase by South African English second language learners
Bibliography: pages 121-132Documented evidence indicates that South African learners, including university students, experience problems in using English as an academic language. In particular, reading and writing levels are below expected levels. Some scholars have attributed learners’ inability to acquire Cognitive and Academic Language Proficiency to an overreliance on Communicative Language Teaching and are of the view that problems in reading and writing, at least in part, stem from English Second Language (ESL) learners’ poor command of English grammar. The problem of underperformance in English is exacerbated by underqualified teachers and inadequate resources, which translate to a lack of information. This study focused on the acquisition of one particular aspect of English grammar, namely prepositions, and on how prepositions could be instructed to English First Additional Language (EFAL) learners in the South African context. The study was motivated by the researcher’s own observations as an English teacher, that EFAL learners struggle to acquire English prepositions, and by the absence of information on how to teach prepositions, even though the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement includes prepositions that ought to be taught at different stages. This lack of information compounds the identified problem, given that teachers struggle to teach specific aspects of English grammar without clear guidance. The present study utilised a quasi-experimental design (a pre-test – post-test design) to compare the effectiveness of explicit versus implicit grammar instruction in teaching English prepositions. The study also considered the effect of learners’ first language (Sesotho or isiZulu) on the acquisition of English prepositions. The data were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences. The results suggest that learners benefited more from explicit grammar instruction than from implicit grammar instruction, and that the first language had no significant effect on learning outcomes. The study contributes to the field of Applied Linguistics in that it increases our understanding of the constructive role that explicit grammar instruction can play in the South African context and in that it provides practical examples of how EFAL teachers can instruct prepositions to their learners. (Applied Linguistics)Linguistics and Modern Language

Text in English, with title, abstract and keywords in English, Afrikaans and ZuluIn this research, both discursive and in practice, I give account of my Judaic family dispersal, which requires a particular interaction and interrelationship between the past and the present. This interrelationship forms a dialectic that holds two positions: first, the past, represented as a haunting through the intergenerational transference of traumatic postmemory and, second, the present as a manifestation of cultural hybridity. I attempt to reconcile these seemingly opposite polarities in a manner that gives agency to a traumatic Judaic familial diasporic narrative rooted in the context of the Holocaust. This is made especially complicated, given the intricate histories both personal and collective that intersect in my family’s diasporic journey in Poland, America and South Africa. These include
the Holocaust, Polish-Jewish relations, pre- and during WWII, and apartheid in South Africa.
I combine and interconnect these diverse historical, cultural and spatial locations to form what I term ’entanglements‘: the interweaving of the past and the present, folkloric and mythological narratives. My practice-led research is approached from a Bricolage perspective, which incorporates an autoethnographic and subjective stance, supported by
literature and textual comparison. These include notions of nostalgia, explicated by Svetlana Boym (2001), and empathic imagination, as examined in the writings of Caroline Pedwell (2016) and Dominik La Capra (1999, 2001). Through re-contextualisation of existing family
documentation, my research problematises haunting trauma to become an affective and affirmative representation of postmemory narratives. I refer to the pivotal texts concerning postmemory and hybridity in relation to Marianne Hirsch (1997, 2012) and Homi Bhabha
(1994, 2004.). In addition, the theories of Eva Kosofsky Sedgwick (2003) and Jill Bennett (2005) provide a reparative reading of this exegesis. By way of comparison, Mirta Kupferminc, Firelei Baez and Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum are selected as artists who
challenge representation of diasporic hybrid hauntings through their own cultural heritage and mythological constructs. The outcome enabled a dialogical conversation with my own practice, developing innovative narratives of haunting.
Hierdie poging was veral ingewikkeld, vanweë die verwikkelde geskiedenisse, persoonlik sowel as gemeenskaplik, wat mekaar kruis in my familie se
By wyse van
Kulolu cwaningo, kokubili ukuxoxisana kanye nokusebenza, nginikeze ukulandelana kwezahlakalo zokuhlakazeka komndeni wami wamaJuda, okwakudinga ukuhlola ukusebenzelana nokuhlobana phakathi kwesikhathi esedlule nesamanje. Knowledge, attitude and practices among female high school teachers towards early detection of breast cancer
Background: Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in females and a leading
cause of annual deaths. Health education and early detection of breast cancer may
reduce and prevent death, and teachers could be the key.
Objectives: To determine the knowledge, attitude and describe the practices of female
high school teachers towards early detection of breast cancer.
Methods: A quantitative descriptive study was conducted in public high schools in Addis
Ababa. A self-administered questionnaire collected responses from a sample of 195
respondents. Data analysis used the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS)
(2019), Version 22.0 program, and presented as descriptive and inferential statistics.
Results: Results revealed a low level of knowledge and practice of, and a negative
attitude towards the early detection of breast cancer by female high school teachers.
Conclusion: The knowledge, attitude and practice related to breast cancer needs to be
improved among female high school teachers.M.P.H.Health Studie
Transmogrification at a South African group relations conference : what does this mean for the individual and the organisation?
Text in English, abstract in English, Afrikaans and Northern SothoGroup Relations Conferences provide adult learners opportunities to study above and below the surface dynamics of organisational and community life. An effective pedagogy in developing complex world views when exploring challenges of managing different social systems. Yet the literature suggested there is a hatred of learning by experience and lack of faith in such learning. The focus of this research is on a group relations conference named the Robben Island diversity experience (RIDE) held annually in South Africa. What prompted this research was the paucity of research on members experiences of group relations conferences.
An emerging qualitative approach was applied within an interpretive framework in the meta theoretical post-positivistic paradigm of Critical Realism. The research strategy leads an inquiry into the RIDE participants experiences of transmogrification within Hermeneutic Phenomenology. A non-probability sampling strategy, of eight individuals enabled a multi-method research strategy of face-to-face interviews and a focus group. Data were analysed by means of Braun and Clarke six-step thematic data analysis method, applying a Systems Psychodynamic lens.
Manifesting themes of a five-day revolution, the dangerous and delirious zero-sub game, a new dawn one of those with vampires and keep moving safety first no fires on the ship, indicate that the RIDE was a complex system containing individual differences of an inner struggle to preserve, transform and to transmogrify. While experiencing a five-day revolution, described as a tale of the vampires, excuse me but your teeth are in my neck.
A new concept of preservation and transmogrification was conceptualised to extend the body of knowledge of what transformation may look like at group relations conferences. Leveraging participants and researcher as defended subjects enabled describing the RIDE participants experience of the group relations conference, despite meaning making being difficult for themselves. The rationalised myth in the literature that these events cannot be researched was tested. The value of group relations conferences as an intervention tool was confirmed.
ʼn Vyfdagrevolusie word beleef en as ʼn storie van vampiere beskryf – verskoon my maar jou tande is in my nek.
Dikhonferetshe tša ditlemagano tša dihlopha di fa baithuti ba bagolo menyetla go ithuta godimo le ka fase ga diphetogo tša maemo a mokgahlo le bophelo bja setšhaba. A Quantitative Inquiry into South African Undergraduate University Students’ Perceptions of Religiously Sanctioned Homophobia
The paper investigates the factors that inform university undergraduate students’ perceptions of religiously sanctioned homophobia. Data was drawn from a quantitative survey conducted in 2017 on students’ perceptions of social norms, heteronormativity, and homophobia at a South African urban-based university. A total of 330 undergraduate students completed the survey. The study found statistically significant correlations between the factors of sex, degree of religiosity and family socialization and the undergraduate students’ perceptions of religiously sanctioned homophobia. Male students demonstrated more support for religiously sanctioned homophobia than did female students. Students with a higher degree of religiosity were more likely to support statements that enforced homophobia than did students with a lower degree of religiosity. Students who had been socialized in homophobic families were more likely to support religiously sanctioned homophobia than were students who had grown up in more tolerant families. The study did not find statistically significant correlations between the factors of frequency of exposure to religious services and place of origin and the undergraduate students’ perceptions of religiously sanctioned homophobia. The paper makes a substantive contribution to the limited South African studies that focus on the broader student population’s perceptions of religiously sanctioned homophobiaSociolog
Enhancing services provided by small- and medium accounting practitioners in South Africa
Abstracts in English, Zulu and Northern SothoThis study responded to a worldwide call by the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), a global advocacy body for the accountancy profession, for more research into small and medium practices (SMPs). SMPs, which employ a large number of professional accountants, represent the majority of accountancy practices in the world.
South Africa’s National Development Plan indicates that new jobs are likely to be created by growing small and medium enterprises (SMEs). SMPs, as trusted advisors to SMEs, provide important professional services that assist SMEs to become sustainable businesses, and create the jobs required by the local economy. The business advisory needs of SMEs are mainly fulfilled by SMPs, which somehow appear not to understand the former’s needs. Developing an understanding of the relationship between SMPs and SMEs is crucial for the accounting profession, policy makers and the academic community.
The study sought to propose a framework for SMPs, to enhance the services they provide to SMEs, viewed through the lens of the theory of the business. A pragmatist paradigm was employed to provide a philosophical foundation for the empirical study, which was mainly inductive and exploratory, as little information on this topic is available in the literature. A mixed methods methodology was used, comprising a literature review, an Interactive Qualitative Analysis (IQA) survey, and the analysis of secondary data.
The challenges preventing SMPs from enhancing the services they provide to SMEs were identified via a literature study and explored by means of a survey which garnered the views of SMP owner-practitioners regarding the drivers of these obstacles, while the needs of SMEs were determined by analysing secondary data.
The findings of the literature study, IQA survey and secondary analysis were triangulated to inform the development of a framework, with inputs being received from SMP owner-practitioners on the relevance and completeness of the 55 statements included in that framework. This work contributes to the scholarly body of knowledge, the practice of SMPs, and the theory of business, with the identified areas of concern for SMPs being 1) automation/artificial intelligence; 2) keeping up with new regulations and standards; and 3) competition from unqualified accountants/new entrants to the industry.Dinyakišišo tše di arabetše boipiletšo bja lefase ka bophara bjo bo dirilwego ke Mokgatlo wa Boditšhabatšhaba wa Bašomi ba Tekodišišo ya Ditšhelete (IFAC), e lego setheo sa lefase ka bophara sa tšwetšopele ya phrofešene ya balekodišiši ba ditšhelete, go dira dinyakišišo tše ntši ka ga dikhamphanipotlana le tša magareng (di-SMP). Disruptive Innovation at the Base-of-the-Pyramid: Negotiating the Missing Links
The disruptive innovation framework has become a topical issue in recent years. Despite its popularity, as well as the perceived strategic advantages it bestows on entrant firms, little is known about the disruptive innovation capability of new-technology-based firms (NTBFs) in the South African context. This article explores the contextual factors that influence disruptive innovation capability in South Africa’s base-of-the-pyramid (BoP) environment and how, given the specifics of this operating environment, entrepreneurs strategize for disruptive innovation capability. Following the development of a conceptual framework, we used a grounded theory approach to conduct in-depth interviews with purposefully selected stakeholders in the NTBF incubation sector. Our findings
show that South Africa has the catalytic socio-economic dynamics to encourage the development
of disruptive innovations. However, despite having fairly robust institutions in the entrepreneurial ecosystem, these fall short of enabling the innovation capability of NTBFs, owing to the poor-quality linkages between and among institutions within the ecosystem. On the strength of these findings, we synthesised a framework of disruptive innovation capability in BoP environments that highlights the contextual factors that influence disruptive innovation capability. Specifically, we demonstrate how the quality of linkages in the entrepreneurial ecosystem influences the innovation outcomes for innovators.Graduate School of Business Leadershi
