    Get PDF
Abstracts in English, Sesotho and ZuluThe purpose of the study was to explore the legal imperative of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act No. 85 of 1993 and the South African Schools Act (SASA) No. 84 of 1996. The study set out to determine the nature and extent of the implementation of occupational school safety and the literature review examined both international and South African perspectives on the implementation of school safety. The OHS Act No. 85 of 1993 was discussed and linked to a school context, as well as exploring the legal safety imperative of the SASA No. 84 of 1996. The study followed an exploratory sequential mixed method design using a non-probability, homogeneous convenience, and purposive sample from a selection of public secondary public schools within the Gauteng Province. The study was divided in two phases, where the first qualitative phase utilised an interview guide and the second quantitative phase consisted of a structured, self-completing questionnaire to determine participants’ knowledge and compliance to the OHS Act No. 85 of 1993. School safety in South African schools falls under the auspices of the SASA No. 84 of 1996, with an emphasis on security safety. Data analysis found that occupational safety was not implemented to the letter of the law as prescribed by the OHS Act No. 85 of 1993, and was not at an optimum level of implementation and management. In fact, school management and educators regard occupational school safety as a burden, an additional task, and not their responsibility. An objective of the study was to develop a school safety management plan (SSMP) and framework (SSMF). The school safety management framework (SSMF) was based on three stages and 12 building blocks, namely, six primary and six supporting building blocks. The proposed school safety management plan (SSMP) and framework (SSMF) aim to assist the Department of Basic Education (DBE), the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), school governing bodies, school managers and educators to achieve legislated occupational school safety, as prescribed by the OHS Act No. 85 of 1993 and supporting regulations. The researcher is confident that the SSMF and SSMP will add value to the strategic plans of the DBE and the GDE to ensure effective and continuous school safety, and to improve the quality of school life for every scholar, educator, stakeholder and role-player. Teacher well-being in a rural Mpumalanga secondary school environment : a positive psychology perspective

    Get PDF
Teacher well-being is one of the cornerstones of our education system in South Africa. Research indicates that teachers experience multiple challenges regarding their well-being. Drawing from Bronfenbrenner’s bio-ecological model, asset-based approach and positive psychology perspectives, this qualitative phenomenological study explored how teachers perceive their well-being in relation to multiple challenges they experience in a rural secondary school context. Two secondary schools were purposively selected in the Mpumalanga Province. A sample of fourteen secondary school teachers, seven from each school was purposively selected to participate in the study. Data sources include transcribed semi-structured individual interviews, focus group discussions, document analysis, and a research journal. Thematic analysis was used to analyse data and generate themes, sub-themes, and categories. The findings demonstrate that teachers face multisystemic challenges, especially with regard to limited support for their chronic medical conditions that affect their well-being. By employing an asset-based and positive psychological (PERMA) approach to well-being, teachers might be empowered to identify and mobilise assets and resources to address the issues they experience in their ecosystemic contexts. The research findings may contribute to existing knowledge bases within the fields of education, teacher well-being, and psychology. A better understanding of teachers’ experiences regarding their well-being could lead to more efficient teacher development and support programmes that foster well-being.M. Ed. The natural and cultural elements in the Sumerian Temple Hymns with special reference to the Kesh Temple Hymn

    Get PDF
The Sumerian Temple Hymns are a genre that hymns temples seen as cosmic houses in ancient Sumer. The concept of a normal house lay behind the thought process that leads to the building of temples. The ancient people of Mesopotamia used this concept of the house as a metaphor called the building- and filling topos. The metaphor of the house lay behind the building of the great temples. This could be understood from the architecture in structures such as the temple platforms, the monumental nature of the temple and the sacred furniture. All of this can be deduced from the study of archaeology. Ancient Mesopotamians utilized the same concept in the literature. Literature such as the Kesh Temple Hymn therefore, expressed in literature exactly what the archaeology informs us that the ancients built in brick and mortar.M. A. Includes summaries in Afrikaans and ZuluGender inequalities persist across all economic sectors, and women do not have the same economic opportunities as men. According to the World Bank, the tourism sector offers significant opportunities for women's empowerment by allowing them to advance to positions of leadership and entrepreneurship. The study aimed to determine whether barriers to career advancement of women (family responsibilities, work environment, qualifications, flexible working hours, work from home) differ significantly from the latent variables of leadership of WIT, motivation of WIT, and empowerment of WIT. The study was quantitative and descriptive, allowing researchers to assess the impact of leadership of WIT, motivation of WIT, and empowerment of WIT on women's career advancement in the SA tourism sector. Non-discriminative snowball sampling was used to collect the primary data (n = 250), and the questionnaire was distributed online via email and social media platforms as indicated in the findings of this study. Results confirm that barriers to career advancement of women have a significant effect on the latent variables of Leadership of WIT, Motivation of WIT and the Empowerment of WIT. This study aimed to fill a knowledge gap concerning women in the tourism sector in SA and to add to the growing international conversation on the barriers to career advancement for women in the tourism sector. Adoption of environmental management accounting in the textile manufacturing industry in South Africa

    Get PDF
Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and ZuluThe global profile of environmental concerns has intensified the demand to develop greener practices. This study investigated the green practices employed by textile manufacturing organisations (TMOs) in South Africa, and the benefits thereof for such organisations. This study, likewise, examined the indicators of the successful adoption of green practices among TMOs in SA. The qualitative accounts presented in this study were compiled using existing literature, in-depth interviews, and web-based document analysis. The generated data were thematically analysed, and the study findings indicate that TMOs in SA employ activity-based costing and material flow cost accounting, primarily for cost allocation and waste minimisation. The findings of this study also indicate that coercive pressure, in the form of environmental compliance monitoring, is lacking in the textile manufacturing industry (TMI) of SA. This study suggests that TMOs may require several practices to meet their environmental objectives. Therefore, future work can focus on the use of water management accounting (WMA) in TMOs.Uhlaka lomhlaba wonke lokukhathazeka kwemvelo lukhulise isidingo sokuthuthukisa izinqubo eziluhlaza. The influence of socio-economic status and parents' educational background on career aspirations of young adults

    No full text
In South Africa, socio-economic inequality has a profound negative impact on various socio-economic levels, including education and the success of many young adults and their career aspirations (Buthelezi et al., 2009; Sayed & Van Niekerk, 2017). Therefore, this study aimed at exploring the influence of the educational background and socioeconomic status of parents on the career aspirations of young adults. A qualitative study was employed to explore the unique lived experiences of the participants. The focal point of the study was the process young adults follow towards formulating their career aspirations. Semi-structured interviews were conducted as a data collection method. The aims of the study required purposive sampling as a method to analyse the data and content analysis was used to extract themes and sub-themes. The study found that the educational background and socio-economic status of parents inform how much access young adults have to knowledge and resources and would increase their confidence and possibility to pursue their career aspirations. Recommendations were made to organisations, industrial and organisational psychologists, and career counsellors on how to best support young adults and come up with initiatives that could be implemented in their journeys towards becoming fulfilled employees.ENingizimu Afrika, ukungalingani kwezenhlalisano yabantu nakwezomnotho kunemiphumela emibiki kakhulu kumazinga ehlukene kubantu nakwezomnotho, okubandakanya ezemfundo kanye nempumelelo yabantu abasha abaningi kanye nezintshisekelo zabo ngama-career (Buthelezi et al., 2009; Sayed & Van Niekerk, 2017). Ngakho-ke, lolu cwaningo lunenhloso yokuqhwanda ngomthelela womsusa kwizimo zabazali kwezemfundo kanye nezimo zenhlalisano yabantu nakwezomnotho kwizintshisekelo zama-career zabantu abasha. Kusetshenziswe ucwaningo lwenqubo ye-qualitative ukuqhwanda ngezipiliyoni zabantu ababambe iqhaza. Ucwaningo lugxile kakhulu kwiprosese elandelwa ngabantu abasha ekwenzeni izintshisekelo zamacareer abo. Kusetshenziswa ama-semi-structured interviews njengemethodi yokuqoqa ulwazi. Text in English with abstract and keywords in English and SetswanaMaternal healthcare service delivery influences the obstetric outcomes of the women in their perinatal period, including six weeks after childbirth. It is in that regard that the purpose of this study was to determine the nature and extent of maternal healthcare service delivery in Gauteng Province, South Africa. The research study adopted a three-phased sequential exploratory mixed-methods research (MMR) design approach, involving qualitative and quantitative data collection, and convergent data analysis respectively. The study population comprised midwives working at the four selected public hospitals in Gauteng Province, as well as the perinatal women accessing their maternal health at the self-same public hospitals. Due to the multiple data collection instruments applied, the study concomitantly adopted different sampling strategies involving purposive, maximum variation, stratified random, and convenience sampling. Finally, a sample size of 392 was obtained, consisting of 105 midwives and 287 perinatal women. Qualitative data collection was implemented through focus group discussions (FGDs), in-depth interviews and documentary analysis. The quantitative data collection was facilitated through checklists and structured questionnaires. Both thematic and content data analysis were applied in the study’s qualitative phase. For quantitative data analysis, the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), Version 27 and STATA 16 computer programs were utilised. The study findings revealed diverse assumptions, statements and beliefs that urge for a reconfiguration of current domination and authority practices over women and other vulnerable groups. Furthermore, the study found that five dominant literature-based themes were still observable in the practical environment of midwives and their patients in the maternity wards. These are: individual factors, interpersonal relations, organisational challenges; as well as community and policy and government factors. The researcher’s developed model was based on the actual findings in the current study and was subsequently evaluated by the midwifery experts. The purpose of the model was to contribute towards improvements in maternal healthcare service delivery for the reduction of maternal mortality.Thebolelo ya ditirelo tsa pelegi e na le tlhotlheletso e kgolo mo dipholong tsa pelegi mo basading ka nako ya boimane le botsetse jwa bone go fitlha dikgwedi di le thataro. This thesis was designed with the purpose of investigating the “Information-Seeking Behaviour” (ISB) of history and international studies postgraduates in an academic hybrid library in Nigeria. The study consisted of eight objectives and research questions. The study’s scope focused mainly on postgraduates of history and international studies department, and on librarians, in a federal university in Nigeria. Wilson’s (1999:251) model of information behaviour, and his (1999:252) model of ISB were selected as the study’s theoretical framework. Qualitative case study was selected as the research design, and interpretivism research paradigm was used to shape the study. Purposive sampling technique was used to draw samples from the study’s population. Focus group, observation and interview were used as data collection instruments. The data obtained were analysed using qualitative analysis method. Among the study’s findings, it was revealed that: the postgraduates need information from the library mainly for their academic and personal activities; the postgraduates are regular users of the library, and they usually use the library for different purposes; the postgraduates usually employ technology or manual method to access information in various sources; there are different ways the library uses to satisfy the information needs of the postgraduates, and to an extent, the library information resources are meeting the postgraduates’ information needs; apart from the library, the postgraduates also consult other information sources, but their most preferred information source is the Internet; the postgraduates’ ISB also involve information exchange and transfer; and there are certain factors that determine the postgraduates’ perceived information needs satisfaction and end of their information-seeking. Finally, it was revealed that there are barriers to the postgraduates’ information-seeking and use of information in the library and beyond. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that the library should establish a personal librarian program, and the postgraduates should be trained on how to search the library digital resources. Also, based on the findings, the theoretical framework of the study was modified. The study contributed to knowledge by providing an insight into the ISB of history and international studies scholars, and by extending the research on humanities postgraduates’ ISB.D. Phil. A health management information system (HMIS) is the intersection between the business process of healthcare and information systems to deliver better healthcare services. A health information system is one of the health system's building blocks. The purpose of this study was to develop strategies to strengthen health management information systems in Ethiopia. The study used the Performance of Routine Information System (PRISM). It adopted a quantitative research approach and implemented it over three phases. The first phase involved a retrospective document review of the quality of maternal health data across registers, tally sheets, DHIS2 databases, and data quality monitoring logbooks in ten randomly selected healthcare facilities using a standard quantitative checklist. The focus was on three data quality dimensions: accuracy, completeness and timeliness of specific maternal indicators and data elements. Maternal health programme was selected among different programmes which were found to have challenges with data quality. The second phase involved a descriptive cross-sectional survey using a close-ended questionnaire. The population for this phase included health professionals working in Addis Ababa public health centres who used the health management information system. These professionals were recruited from the ten public health centres used in Phase 1 through multistage stratified sampling techniques. The collected data were analysed using SPSS Version 26. The findings of the two phases were combined to derive meta-inferences. In the final phase, a Delphi technique was used to develop strategies that were validated by a team of experts to strengthen the data quality, data management and information use in public healthcare facilities. The first phase of the document review revealed that the overall data quality was poor across the maternal data sources in terms of accuracy, completeness, and timeliness. Furthermore, key findings of the second phase indicated that the components of data management were not consistently practised, a large amount of data was shelved and unprocessed, and information was not used for decisions in accordance with standards in healthcare facilities due to a variety of factors. These issues were further linked to organisational, technical and behavioural factors. In conclusion, combined key findings indicate that a large amount of data was not properly managed across data management processes, lacked data quality, and was not used satisfactorily at all levels. As a whole, the importance of data quality, data management and information needs was not recognised and practised, particularly at case teams level. Hence, HIS strategies were developed to address the identified gaps..Ph.D. (Public Health)Health Studie

Leadership in a transitioning higher education landscape from traditional to digitalisation of teaching and learning : a case of open, distance and elearning in Uganda

    No full text
Abstracts in English, Zulu and AfrikaansIntegration of technology into teaching and learning is not new in Uganda, but the rapid rate and pace of technological advancement, especially regarding the emerging educational technologies, corresponding pedagogical and leadership requirements, is. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the problem by necessitating all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to go online. The main objective of this study was to explore the lived experiences and adaptations of leaders in a transitioning HE landscape to develop a framework that would aid leadership reinvention from traditional face to face to Digitalisation Teaching and Learning (DTL). Using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis and specifically the idiographic approach, qualitative data was collected through interviews of seven purposively selected senior managers in the Ugandan higher education sector. The study was also guided by the Complexity leadership theory, Distance Education System Theory and Bridges transition framework. The findings established that while there had existed various digital strategies pre-COVID-19 amongst all HEIs in Uganda, HE leadership struggled iteratively to leverage them in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic for a complete transition. Three master themes, twelve themes and thirteen subthemes emerged. Master theme 1- ‘Digital experiences’ comprised four themes including visioning for digital strategies pre-COVID-19, leveraging existing digital strategies, rethinking institutional strategies post-COVID-19 and the neutral state of transition. Master theme 2- virtual institutional landscape characterised by four themes including new channels of institutional social interaction, mechanisms of institutional culture, operations and practices, leadership roles and power structures and knowledge and social competencies. Master theme 3- ‘Institutional adaptability’ that comprised four themes including mobilisation of workforce, financial resource mobilisation, institutionalisation of DTL and, DTL gaps and mitigations. This study concluded that, while HE was metamorphosing into a virtual landscape, the existing traditional face to face structural setup of HE and inadequate strategic leadership representation is a major barrier to DTL and undermines the positionality and competitiveness of the Ugandan HE sector in the global village. Therefore, the need for leadership’s acceptance and recognition of the transitioning HE landscape, piloting and adoption of the developed leadership transitioning framework is paramount. Uphando olu luye lwakhokelwa ziingcamango ezigxile kwiiNkqubo yezobunkokheli, yiNkqubo Yeengcamango ngeMfundo Ephakamileyo Yomgama kwaneyesikhokelo seenguqu kwiBhulorho. Iziphumo zifumanise ukuba njengokuba ibikho kakade nje imigaqo-nkqubo eyahlukeneyo yezobuchwepheshe kuwo onke amaziko emfundo ephakamileyo e-Uganda ngaphambi kokuqhambuka kweCOVID-19, iinkokheli zezemfundo ephakamileyo ziye zaminxwa yimingeni emandla xa bezigagene neCOVID-19 ukuze kube nokungenwa ngokugqibeleleyo kwiinguqu. Kwathi kwaqhambuka imixholo ephambili emithathu, ishumi elinambini lemixholo kunye neshumi elinesithathu lemixholwana; uMxholo ophambili 1- ‘amava Ezobuchwepheshe’ eyayibandakanya imixholo emine equka ukuvezwa kweembono zemigaqo-nkqubo yezobuchwepheshe ngaphambi kweCOVID-19, ukusetyenziswa kwemigaqo-nkqubo yezobuchwepheshe esele ikho, ukucingwa ngokutsha kwemigaqo-nkqubo yezobuchwepheshe yamaziko emfundo emva kweCOVID-19 kwanesimo esingakhethe cala seenguqu; umxholo oPhambili 2 - isimo samaziko esiphawulwa imixholo emine equka imijelo emitsha yokunxibelelana koluntu lweziko, iinkqubo zenkcubeko yeziko, intsebenzo neenkqubo, iindima zeenkokheli kwanezimo zamagunya, ulwazi kunye nezakhono zoluntu; nomxholo oPhambili 3 - ‘Ukuqhelaniseka kweziko’ obekubandakanye imixholo emine ebiquka ukuxhotyiswa kwabasebenzi, ukuvulelwa kwezibonelelo eziyimali, ukuqhelaniswa kokufundisa nokufunda kumaqonga ezobuchwepheshe, imisantsa kwakunye nokuncitshiswa kwefuthe. Olu phando luvalelise ngelithi ngelixa imfundo ephakamileyo ibisiya isiba liqonga lezobuchwepheshe, le meko isabhudlayo neqhelekileyo yokufunda nokufundisa ubuso ngobuso kwimfundo ephakamileyo ndawonye nabameli abangaxhobisekanga ngokwezomgaqo-nkqubo zingumqobo omkhulu ekufundiseni nasekufundeni kumaqonga ezobuchwepheshe, zisengela phantsi isimo nesakhono sokukhuphisana kwicandelo lemfundo ephakamileyo yase-Uganda kwiqonga lehlabathi. Ngoko ke, sibalulekile isidingo sokuba iinkokheli zamkele ze zinakane iinguqu kwiqonga lemfundo ephakamileyo, zizame, zamkele isikhokelo esiqulunqiweyo seenguqu kubunkokheli. Oondoqo bolu phando ligalelo kwimbono ehlanganyelweyo yokusebenzisana kweenkokheli phantsi kwefuthe lokufundisa nokufunda kusetyenziswa iqonga lezobuchwepheshe kwicandelo lemfundo ephakamileyo.Ph. D.
