Integration of ethnomathematics in the teaching of probability in secondary school mathematics in Zimbabwe
Underpinned by the social constructivism theory and the praxis of integrating ethnomathematics in the teaching of probability, this PAR developed a policy framework for facilitating the integration of ethno-mathematics in secondary school mathematics in the teaching of probability in Zimbabwe. A qualitative method approach was used in a case study of one rural secondary school. The study targeted rural secondary school mathematics teachers who were teaching Form Three classes. The school was purposively selected and so were the three form three mathematics teachers and the form three learners at that school who participated in this study. The study triangulated the research instruments which included semi-structured interviews, lesson observation schedules and post-lesson reflection interviews. The study developed an ethnomathematics instructional model which was found to successfully guide the participants to integrate ethnomathematics in the teaching of probability. Thematic analysis was used to analyse data which was wholly qualitative. Findings of this study reveal that the use of the ethnomathematics instructional models helped the participants to integrate ethnomathematics in the teaching of probability effectively. Teaching probability concepts using the ethnomathematics instructional model was also found to trigger improvements in the learners’ performance in probability. The two theories namely, Determination of Randomness Theory and Determination of Independent Outcome Theory which emerged from this study can guide mathematics teachers when incorporating cultural games in the teaching of probability concepts. Based on the findings of this study I conclude that the ethnomathematics instructional model when implemented properly improves the mathematics teachers’ ability to integrate ethnomathematics in the teaching of probability. The findings in this study have the potential to inform mathematics teachers, policy makers, and curriculum developers on the significance of implementing the ethnomathematics instructional model used in this study in schools. It is also advisable to carry out further studies to find out how the ethnomathematics instruction model can be used in other topics in mathematics.D. Phil. Supply chain risks in a bulk import supply chain of commodity chemicals
Summaries in English, Afrikaans and ZuluIn modern day supply chains, it has become important for all role players to not only be
aware of the risks associated with import supply chains in general, but more also
specifically in the commodity trade. Due to the nature and small margins in the commodity
trade industry it is crucial for the relevant role players to not only take note of these risks,
but to also develop strategies and techniques to mitigate and /or reduce these risks when
possible. In the ever-changing world where demand fluctuates, and the only constant is
change, it requires a supply chain that can adapt to external forces with techniques and
strategies that are suitable at that time. In order to understand risks and how to manage
them better, this dissertation will focus on the key risks involved in the bulk import supply
chain of soda ash, which is used in the manufacturing of many products, including wellknown
consumer products.
The study investigated various risks, supply chain risk management, and strategies to
manage these risks in a proactive and reactive way through collaboration, agility,
robustness, stability and flexibility. This study also tries to indicate the role and importance
of collaboration, integration and supply chain resilience. A quantitative research design
was used to gather the data, which included a questionnaire with close-ended questions
with scales from which respondents had to select the options with which they mostly
agreed. The major risks identified in the study are pandemics (COVID-19), port delays,
logistics outsourcing, labour strikes and infrastructure deterioration. The top five risk
mitigation strategies employed are flexible transport, collaboration with
suppliers/customers, resilient supply chain, works toward integration with
suppliers/customers and robust supply chain.
hierdie studie geïdentifiseer is, is pandemies (soos COVID-19), oponthoude by hawens,
Uchungechunge lokuhlinzeka ezinsuku zanamuhla, sekubalulekile kubo bonke

How do you expect us to survive? Lamentation of female sex workers in Zimbabwe during COVID-19 lockdown
The restrictive measures taken to curb and mitigate the spread of the corona virus of 2019 (COVID-19) had negative implications on the vulnerable populations. The most severely affected group among the vulnerable population were sex workers, whose work venues and customers were locked down. This descriptive phenomenological study explored effects of COVID-19 on female sex workers in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Snowballing sampling was used to recruit participants. Data were collected through in-depth face-to-face individual interviews with ten female sex workers. The sample size was determined by data saturation. Colaizzi's seven-step content analysis approach was followed to guide data analysis. Rigour was ensured by adhering to Guba and Lincoln's trustworthiness criteria. The study found that the lockdown measures impacted negatively on sex workers’ income, making it difficult for them to get money for food and rentals. In order to survive, sex workers adopted innovative entrepreneurship. Others engaged in risky sexual behaviours, further aggravating their situation emotionally and psychologically. It is recommended that the government and policy makers provide psychosocial and economic support to protect the rights of female sex workers in order to maintain the gains made in HIV response.College of Human Science
The relationship between employee well-being and organisational effectiveness in a bond origination company in South Africa
Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and ZuluThe well-being of employees influenced the way in which they performed and ultimately impacted the effectiveness of an organisation. The interdependent and mutually beneficial relationship between an organisation and its employees needs to be addressed to adequately adapt to the increased change, competition and volatility within today’s world of work.
The overall objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the concepts of Employee Well-being (EWB) and Organisational Effectiveness (OE) in a bond origination company in South Africa. More specifically, the relationship between the constructs of EWB (namely Job satisfaction, Work engagement, Burnout and Workaholism) and a Composite OE Score. The measuring instruments used included the Job Satisfaction Questionnaire (JSQ), the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), the Dutch Workaholism Scale (DWS), the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OBI) and the Organisational Performance Questionnaire (OPQ). A convenience sample of 203 respondents was achieved and included employees of all genders and managerial and non-managerial positions.
Results indicated that three of the four constructs of EWB, namely Burnout (r = -.452, p < .001), Job satisfaction (r = .667; p < .001) and Work Engagement (r = .587; p < .001) were found to be statistically significantly related to a Composite OE Score. The relationship between Workaholism and OE (r = -.060, p = .394) was weak, negative and not statistically significant. Furthermore, three of the four constructs of EWB are statistically significant predictors of a Composite OE Score, accounted for 99.3% of the variance of a Composite OE Score.
Impilonhle yabasebenzi inomthelela kwindlela abasebenza ngayo kanye nokuba nomthelela ekusebenzeni kahle kwenhlangano. A social work study on factors contributing to a high rate of depression amongst university students from the age of 19 - 23 years
English and Afrikaans abstractsOver the past few decades, the increase in depression amongst university students has become a global concern. In attempting to understand the increase in the prevalence of depression amongst university students, it is therefore important to look at the key contributory factors resulting in this phenomenon. The high rate of depression and other mental health conditions among university students also indicates the need for preventative social work intervention, with the development of adequate and appropriate social support services for students. This study suggests a need to address a variety of factors affecting the mental health state of students. The purpose of this research highlights factors that explain the recent increase in depression among this generation. The findings, conclusion and recommendations of this study are hoped to help explain the factors behind the increasing rate of depression among university students. The aim of this study was to explore and describe the factors contributing to an increase in the rate of depression amongst university students in the age group of 19-23 years.
A qualitative research approach was utilised to gain an understanding of the factors contributing to the high rate in depression amongst university students from the age of 19-23 years. A case study, specifically collective case study research design, was employed. The sample was selected using purposive sampling. Data was acquired from students by means of in-depth interviews, through the virtual platform. Data was analysed according to thematic analysis and Lincoln and Guba’s model (1999) was employed to ensure the trustworthiness of the study. Throughout the study, the ethical considerations observed were informed consent, privacy, confidentiality, anonymity, the right not to be harmed, preparation of participants and management of information. Becks’ Cognitive Theory of Depression was used as a theoretical framework to guide this study.
It was revealed that there are a number of factors that contribute to the development of depression amongst university students. The study revealed that participants’ background and early life, high school experiences, participants’ personal circumstances and living arrangements and personal factors were contributory factors to depression among university students in the age group of 19-23 years. The study also revealed that support systems like family support, support provided on campus and strong faith, played a significant role in assisting students to manage depression more effectively.
'n Gevallestudie, spesifiek kollektiewe gevallestudie-navorsingsontwerp, is gebruik.
(Social Work)Social Wor
Setting, plot structure and narrative point of view in J.S. Shole's short story collection Ofoo, ke fano!
This study evaluates Shole's short stories in respect of setting, plo t structure and narrative point of view. It assesses how Shole manipulates these three aspects in the process of creating his narrative an. In analysing setting, attention is paid not only to the geographical position and time of the events, but also on the relationship between the place and the characters, as well as to the functionality of setting. The structure of the stories is evaluated according to the three phases, namely, exposition, developme nt and resolution. T he " focus is on whether these stories show the essentials of each of the three phases. The study also discusses how Shole uses flashback and foreshadowing to promote suspense and the interrelatedness of events. It examines how Shole manipulates the first person point of view to create a sense of involvement and closeness in the characters of the stories. It also discusses the author's utilisation of the third person omniscient point of view and dramatic point of view, and how the author probes the inner thoughts of the characters. The weaknesses of the author in using these points of view are also highlighted.M.A. (African Languages)African Language
An exploration of the integration of social media with organisational communication in a non-profit organisation: A case study of People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA)
In offering a platform for dialogue, social media has transformed one-way organisational communication with stakeholders into interactive communication. A review of the literature reveals that there is scant evidence concerning social media integration with organisational communication in non-profit organisations. The study sought to fill this gap by exploring this integration and proposing a framework for social media integration with organisational communication in a non-profit organisation. The proposed framework has the potential to be beneficial for non-profit organisations, as it can be used as a guideline for integrating social media with organisational communication. It can also be used as a yardstick to establish whether non-profit organisations have achieved their objectives of integrating social media with organisational communication.
A single case study approach through semi-structured interviews, focus group interviews and secondary data sources was used to collect data at People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA). The case study approach allowed the exploration of the integration of social media with organisational communication and revealed insights that could encourage non-profit organisations to adopt this approach to integration. Findings revealed that communication through cross media planning enables non-profit organisations to communicate consistent messages to stakeholders. In addition to that, evidence suggests that when organisational communication is integrated with social media, POWA is able to communicate consistent messages across the organisation.Communication Scienc
On the study of nuclear reaction mechanisms using exotic nuclei
We investigated the breakup dynamics of the 8B + 208Pb, 11Be + 64Zn, 11Be + 208Pb,
37Mg + 208Pb, 15C + 208Pb, 6Li + 209Bi reactions using the continuum discretized coupled
channels (CDCC) method. Additionally, we investigated the interesting few-body reaction
4He2 + 4He ! 4He + 4He + 4He using the CDCC. At a practical level, our choice of these
reactions was in
uenced by the availability of the experimental data on breakup, fusion,
and elastic scattering cross sections on one hand, and of the theoretical data on the other
which will make the comparison of our results easier. At the fundamental level, these
reactions give a window to explore the dynamics of the nuclear reaction mechanisms of
exotic nuclei.
It is found that the breakup cross section at deep sub-barrier energies is enhanced when the
continuum-continuum couplings are included for the 8B + 208Pb reaction. The complete
fusion cross section is also enhanced at sub-barrier energies but suppressed at abovebarrier
energies due to the continuum-continuum couplings. The breakup observables such
as total reaction, fusion and breakup cross sections, become almost independent of the
ground-state binding energy in the limit approaches zero for the 11Be+64Zn reaction.
It is observed that the rst-order perturbation theory can not explain the breakup of
a system whose ground state wave function becomes unbound whereas, in the CDCC
calculation, when the pure scattering wave function is replaced by the square-integral bin
wave functions, the breakup matrix elements have no convergence issues for both 11Be +
208Pb and 37Mg + 208Pb reactions. We found that the continuum-continuum couplings
and higher-order multipole transitions strongly suppress the nuclear breakup cross section
compared to the Coulomb breakup cross section in the reaction of 15C nucleus on heavy
target. It is found that the resonant states are strongly dominant for lower energies while
the non-resonant states are dominant for higher energies for 6Li+209Bi reaction. A strong
effect of the Helium-dimer continuum-continuum couplings is found on the elastic and
dissociation cross sections in the 4He2 + 4He ! 4He + 4He + 4He reaction. We thenconclude that these couplings are as important in atomic reactions as they are in nuclear reactions, and should be given attention in the analysis of reactions involving loosely-bound molecules.Ph. D. (Physics)Physic
