Grade 9 learners’ learning experience in ratio and proportion in the King Cetshwayo District of Kwa-Zulu Natal Province
Ratio and proportion are mathematics topics which are key to the cognitive development of the learners, supporting the teaching and learning of the subject. It is believed that proportional reasoning skills are vital for modelling and problem solving and for a better understanding of most topics in mathematics. However, different qualitative and quantitative studies conducted globally have revealed that learners of all grades have misconceptions in the domain, ratio and proportion. The current study set to explore grade 9 learners’ academic experiences when solving ratio and proportion problems. The objective behind were firstly, to determine the learner’s performance, secondly to identify the type of errors committed and underlying misconceptions and thirdly to posit some possible causes of the misconceptions. The conceptual framework underpinning the study included the Zone of Proximal Development, and the associated construct of scaffolding (Vygotsky, 1896-1934), assimilation and accommodation (Piaget, 1896-1980). It was observed that most learner’s performance was far below average due to errors committed. In the study, it was found that a contributing factor was the lack of the ZPD, and therefore ignorance of prior knowledge, where misconceptions could be identified. Scaffolding as a teaching strategy was not effectively implemented to engage learners and clear misconceptions. According to Piaget’s theory, including the constructs, assimilation and accommodation, a concept is triggered in the mind when confronted with a meaningful experience. However, the observed lessons were limited to examples in the textbook with no interest shown by learners. Hence, learners failed to solve ratio and proportion in different context. The study followed an explanatory mixed method design. 60 learners, 30 from each of two schools were participants in the study. The instruments used to collect the data were, an achievement test, semi-structured interviews and classroom observation. The independent t-test was used to compare the means of two schools. The single sample t-test was used to compare the schools’ mean and a known standard. The results were interpreted at 95% confidence level, hence, significant at 0.05). Hence, the schools were merged as one sample. The single sample t-test showed significant difference. The -value (2-tailed)) was 0.001 (..<0.05). In other words, the results confirmed that learners failed the test. The types of errors committed by learners showed that they did not have any knowledge on about 64% of the test items that was confirmed by the underlying misconceptions revealed by learners through interviews. The classroom observation outcomes indicated that scaffolding as a teaching method was not implemented effectively and that could be a major contributor to learners’ misconceptions which lead to errors and underperformance. The study has recommended that teachers must establish learner’s prior knowledge before each lesson and scaffolding strategies as proposed by Alber (2014) must be adopted as a teaching method.M. Ed. Factors contributing to the rise of teenage pregnancy in Sekhukhune District, Limpopo Province
The purpose of this study was to explore factors that contribute to the rise of teenage
pregnancy in Sekhukhune District, Limpopo Province. The study was conducted in
Tshehlwaneng clinic, Selala Clinic and Dilokong Gateway. A qualitative, exploratory,
descriptive and contextual design was followed. The target population were pregnant
teenage girls aged between 13-19 years attending antenatal/mother and child
services in Sekhukhune clinics and those who brought their babies for well-baby
clinic. Purposive sampling was used to recruit teenagers at the three clinics in
Sekhukhune District. Participants were purposively selected as they come to the
clinic for antenatal/mother and child services as well as those who brought their
babies for well-baby clinic because were seen as knowledgeable on the issues
related to teenage pregnancy. The selection of participants was made after
teenagers have received the services they came for. The information sheets for
parents and participants were discussed during recruitment and prior interview. The
information sheets, informed consent, assent and parents‟ permission letters were
issued to the potential participants. Appointments were scheduled in correspondence
with clinic return dates to reduce cost of transport. Convenience sampling was used
to select the three clinics in Sekhukhune District. Face-to-face individual interviews,
digital voice recorder and field notes were used to collect data. COVID-19 principles
were followed during data collection. Interviews lasted no more than 20 minutes.
Eighteen (18) participants were interviewed and informed consent, assent and
parents‟ permission letters to participate were signed. Data was analysed by means
of Tesch‟s inductive, descriptive coding method. Eight (8) themes and twenty-three
(23) subthemes emerged from the collected data. The study findings revealed that
teenagers realized that they are pregnant only after specific physiological and emotional changes related to pregnancy were noticed. The study findings also
revealed that carelessness, peer pressure, uncertainty, choice, lack of contraceptive
usage and lack of family affection are aggravating factors to the rise of teenage
pregnancy in Sekhukhune District. Family and partner support was viewed as issues
which helped participants to pull through with teenage pregnancy. Strategies to
reduce teenage pregnancy were proposed by the study emanating from schools,
home and the government. Parental involvement in sex education and support to
teenagers were viewed as a key strategy. The use of contraceptives should be
emphasised and schools as well as government to be involved in the fight to reduce
teenage pregnancy.M.A. (Nursing Science)Health Studie
Analysis of foreign aid effectiveness on economic development in Ethiopia
Abstract in English with Zulu, Northern Sotho and Amharic translationsIn this study the effectiveness of foreign aid on economic development and poverty alleviation in Ethiopia during the period of 2011 to 2020 was analysed. On the one hand, government reports have indicated that the country is economically one of the fastest growing in Africa, a position that has been seconded by international financial institutions and other bilateral donors. On the other hand, the country remains on the list of poorest countries in the world. A qualitative approach was applied in investigating the problems related to foreign aid effectiveness in Ethiopia. The data used in the study was both primary and secondary. Open-ended interviews and focus group discussions were used to generate data from key informants and focus group participants. Content analysis of documents was done using aid flow records, reports of government and United Nations agencies, policy manuals, research findings, books and journals from secondary data sources. The data analysis focused on trends in economic development and foreign aid flow to Ethiopia during the past decade (2011 – 2020), and the role aid plays in economic development and poverty alleviation and its effectiveness in Ethiopia. The primary data sources show that economic performance in Ethiopia during the past decade was sluggish and poverty alleviation targets remained unmet. The number of people below the poverty line remained high and the expected economic transition from an agriculture-led to an industry-led economy did not happen. The results of the effectiveness of foreign aid on poverty alleviation in aid-recipient countries are still inconclusive. Political affiliation, lack of accountability mechanisms, poor collaboration among actors, poor infrastructure and political instability are additional hindering factors in Ethiopia. In line with the perceptions of the primary data sources, institutional capacity is one of the major bottlenecks in Ethiopia hindering foreign aid effectiveness. Regardless of the increasing trend in aid flow into economic sectors in Ethiopia, the effect on poverty alleviation was found to be minimal and its effectiveness hampered by many factors from both the aid recipients’ and the donors’ sides. This study therefore recommends that the factors hindering aid effectiveness in Ethiopia be meaningfully investigated to develop effective country-specific strategies for better use of foreign aid in economic development.Nyakišišo ya thuto ye e sekasekile go šoma gabotse ga thušo ya go tšwa go dinaga tša ka ntle go

Absenteeism of educators in the Lejweleputswa District schools in the Free State Province
Abstracts in English, Southern Sotho and XhosaThe purpose of this study was to explore factors that contribute to the absenteeism of educators. Fourteen schools were sampled in the Lejweleputswa District Office of the Free State Department of Education. An understanding of the reasons for educators’ absenteeism is essential to provide viable solutions to manage educator absenteeism.
To achieve the purpose of this study, a mixed-method approach was employed. Data were obtained from a sample of educators, principals, and official reports from the Lejweleputswa District Office. A survey questionnaire was used to solicit information from educators in selected schools in the Lejweleputswa District. The principals of the selected schools were interviewed to gather in-depth information regarding absenteeism in the district.
The findings of this research have revealed that the working environment of educators is not conducive to teaching and learning, and that this affects staff morale. The availability of teaching resources such as teaching aids and equipment has been cited by participants as critical. In addition, it was found that teaching in overcrowded classrooms affects the quality of teaching, because the educators are unable to reach all the learners. The research also showed that teachers tend to abuse the privilege of personal leave. The findings further revealed that it has become the norm for educators to be absent from school on Mondays, Fridays, and paydays. A direct correlation between educator absenteeism and learner pass rate was evident. Absenteeism was seen to have a negative effect on the daily functioning of the school. As a result of the absenteeism, the school management must reschedule classes and reallocate the work of the educators who are absent. It is recommended in the study that the wellness office of the district, as well as the one of the province should be actively involved in assisting educators who are struggling with personal problems. A further recommendation is that the district and schools’ management should measure the extent of the absenteeism problem and identify the causes accurately.Sepheo sa thuto ena e ne e le ho batlisisa dintlha tse tlatseletsang bosiyong ba matitjhere dikolong. The role of local economic development in urban poverty alleviation : the case of Mbabane, Eswatini
The aim of this study was to investigate the role of local economic development in urban poverty alleviation in Mbabane town in Eswatini. This was done by interviewing various stakeholders that are involved in LED processes which are the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, the Municipal Council of Mbabane, the Commonwealth Local Government Forum and Msunduza community beneficiaries from LED initiatives and programmes. This study also examined the different definitions, debates, and the nature of the LED discourse in Eswatini and briefly, in other countries. This study is important because it fills the gap in knowledge on LED in Eswatini. The study followed a qualitative research approach and used purposive and snowball sampling to get data. Furthermore, the study investigated the pro-poor model and the pro-growth model and looked at how the Eswatini setting manifests itself within these models. The results found were that even though LED processes in Mbabane benefit the poor in a number of positive ways, there are still great strides to be made in terms of LED policy formation, capacity building, knowledge sharing and institutionalizing LED effectively at national government level in Eswatini.M.A. (Development Studies)Development Studie

The Relationship between Perceived Quality of Strategic Management Processes and Strategic Decision-Making Process on Organizational Performance of SMEs: the case of IZRA Distributors.
Strategic management is vital to ensure high business performance and sustained
competitive advantage in a dynamic business environment. Prior research
emphasised the importance of strategic management as a core company function,
and several quality management frameworks now incorporate it as a crucial quality
indicator. These studies paid little attention to gauging how well strategic management
is done, instead of focusing on whether or not strategic management and its many
component roles and procedures were carried out. This led to a gap in the literature
on strategic management's effectiveness and perceived impact on organisational
performance. This study sought to analyse the quality of strategic management
process and decision making in organisations and how these activities contribute to
the organisational performance of IZRA Distributors. A quantitative approach was
employed in this study, utilising a sample of 54 from IZRA Distributors’ employees.
Data were collected using an online questionnaire, and descriptive and inferential
statistics were used for data analysis. Descriptive statistical analysis was conducted
based on the respondents' perceptions to determine the quality of the strategic
management process and strategic decision making. Although respondents generally
had positive perceptions of the strategic management process and strategic decision
making in the organisation, responses with the lowest means to statements were
followed through, as they presented possible improvement areas on strategic
management on statements concerning clear, realistic and implementable objectives,
as well as the accessing and using of real-time information, thus ensuring diversity
and shared understanding of the environment when making decisions. The findings
also showed that high-quality strategic decision-making processes and high-quality
strategic management processes have a favourable impact on organisational
performance. The study's findings may be applied to enhance corporate performance
and advance understanding of strategic management and its connection to
organisational performance, which has managerial and academic ramificationsGraduate School of Business Leadershi
The skill intensity of export growth in South Africa
South Africa has consistently attempted to increase its export base to increase its market share and increase its trading partners in other parts of the world. This is done in an effort to grow the economy and with the hope to increase employment in the face of job shedding in the local economy. What is not clear is the implication of export intensity on labour skills. Skills are in different categories, low-skilled, semiskilled and skilled; which interplay in the market intensity continuum. There is need to take all three into account, simultaneously to get a better understanding of the skills intensity of export growth. Given the simultaneous nature of the model, this study uses the three-stage least squares (3SLS) method to estimate the demand for skills using a linear specification when examining the correlation between export performance in the four biggest exporting industries and the skills structure of South Africa. Resulting from the study is that South Africa is skill intensive in all the main exporting industries. In the manufacturing sector, semiskilled workers are employed alongside skilled workers. This study suggests that skills development should be a continuous and active process.M. Com. (Economics)Economic
Evaluating the Impact of Employee Engagement Practices on the Impact of Employee Performance during the COVID-19 Lockdown in the Private Sector: Case of MT & T COMMUNICATIONS (Pseudonym)
Research has highlighted that employee engagement has dual benefits for both
personal well-being and organisational profitability and suggests that a communication
perspective is valuable for deepening the understanding of employee engagement in
organisational life. However, with the widespread shift to work remotely due to COVID19, it was important to explore contextual opportunities for how employees can
communicatively demonstrate engagement in a remote work environment. This study
sought to analyse the antecedents of employee engagement and how employee
engagement affects employee performance at MT & T Communications. A quantitative
research approach was employed, and data was collected using a survey
questionnaire. A final sample of 30 employees of MT & T Communications was
randomly selected in this study. Data was analysed using descriptive and inferential
statistics. Results showed that work environment, job fit, and leadership were the
factors that influence employee engagement. It was found that leadership and work
environment had the strongest influence on employee engagement. Further, the study
revealed that employee engagement positively correlates with work environment, job
fit and leadership. Thus, a healthy and positive work environment, effective leadership
and good job fit are associated with higher employee engagement. Lastly, the study
sought to determine the relationship between employee engagement and employee
performance during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results showed that there was a
significant positive correlation between employee engagement and employee
performance. Therefore, it was concluded that high levels of employee engagement
are important to the productivity of an organisation. This study recommended that
strategies should focus on improving aspects of the work environment and leadership
to improve employee engagement and in turn improve the performance of employees.
It is important for management of MT & T Communications to constantly make sure
that flexible work arrangements are in place for employees especially in challenging
times like the COVID-19 pandemic. This level of flexibility accommodates the illusive
work-life balance that employees want. The organisation should also invest in
leadership training on employee engagement best practices
