English, French, Afrikaans and Zulu abstractsMadness features prominently in Greek tragedy. Indeed, the theme of madness, its treatment and dramatic illustration contribute to the aim of this genre, which Aristotle identifies as the arousal and the purgation of pity and fear. In this thesis, the existence of two categories of madness: tragic and non-tragic madness, is proposed, and the argument is advanced that both are a consequence of the circumstances of the hero. In this regard, the view is put forward that whereas tragic madness is consistent with the hamartia principle, which accords no moral depravity to the madness that consumes the hero, the hubristic principle by contrast does indeed attach moral depravity to the calamity (madness) that befalls the hero, which is also consistent with non-tragic madness. Based on this premise, the study supports a comparison of the tragedians’ notion of madness and proposes a synthesis of the notion of madness and its treatment in Greek tragedy. To achieve this, an integration is recommended of the psychoanalytic and the socio-psychological theories or methodologies in the interpretation and critique of the either tragic or non-tragic madness of Aeschylus’ Orestes in The Choephori, Sophocles’ Ajax in Ajax and Euripides’ Heracles, Orestes and Pentheus in Heracles, Orestes and The Bacchae respectively. The integration of the psychoanalytic and the socio-psychological theories in the interpretation of the either tragic or non-tragic madness of the heroes mentioned seeks to prove that madness in ancient Greek tragedy may be appropriated from or for psychoanalytic and/or socio-psychological functions or purposes. Insangano ibuvelele kakhulu enhlekeleleni yamaGrikhi. Ngempela, indikimba yensangano, ukwelashwa kwayo kanye nomfanekiso omangazayo kunomthelela enhlosweni yalesi sigaba sombhalo, lapho u-Aristotle asikhomba njengokuvusa nokuhlanzwa kwesihawu nokwesaba. Kulo mqondo, ukuba khona kwezigaba ezimbili zensangano: insangano eyinhlekelele nekungeyona inhlekelele, kuyaphakanyisiwe, futhi impikiswano isithuthukisiwe ukuthi zozimibili ziyimiphumela yezimo zeqhawe. Mayelana nalokhu, kubekwa phambili umbono wokuthi insangano eyinhlekelele ihambisana nesimiso sokukhombisa iphutha lomlingiswa elibuhlungu noma elibulalayo, esingavumelani nokonakala kokuziphatha ensanganweni edla iqhawe, isimiso sokwezethemba ngokweqile ngokuqhathanisa sinamathisela ukonakala kokuziphatha enhlekeleleni (insangano) eyehlela iqhawe, nayo ehambisana nensangano engeyona inhlekelele. Ngokuya ngaleli qophelo, isifundo sisekela ukuqhathaniswa komqondo wezinhlekelele zensangano futhi siphakamisa ukuhlanganiswa komqondo wensangano nokwelashwa kwayo enhlekeleleni yamaGrikhi. Ukufeza lokhu, kuphakanyiswa ukuhlanganiswa kombono wohlelo lwezengqondo nokwelapha ohlose ukwelapha ukuphazamiseka kwengqondo kanye nemibono yezenhlalo nezengqondo noma izindlela ekuhumusheni nasekuhlaziyweni kwensangano eyinhlekelele noma kwensangano okungeyona inhlekelele ka-Aeschylus 'Orestes ku-The Choephori, iSophocles' Ajax ku-Ajax kanye ne-Euripides 'Heracles, Orestes nePentheus ku-Heracles, Orestes neBacchae ngokulandelana. Studies of the muon momentum calibration and performance of the ATLAS detector with pp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s}=13 s = 13  TeV

    No full text
Abstract This paper presents the muon momentum calibration and performance studies for the ATLAS detector based on the pp collisions data sample produced at s\sqrt{s} s  = 13 TeV at the LHC during Run 2 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139  fb1{\textrm{fb}}^{-1} fb - 1 . An innovative approach is used to correct for potential charge-dependent momentum biases related to the knowledge of the detector geometry, using the Zμ+μZ\rightarrow \mu ^{+}\mu ^{-} Z → μ + μ - resonance. The muon momentum scale and resolution are measured using samples of J/ψμ+μJ/\psi \rightarrow \mu ^{+}\mu ^{-} J / ψ → μ + μ - and Zμ+μZ\rightarrow \mu ^{+}\mu ^{-} Z → μ + μ - events. A calibration procedure is defined and applied to simulated data to match the performance measured in real data. The calibration is validated using an independent sample of Υμ+μ\Upsilon \rightarrow \mu ^{+}\mu ^{-} Υ → μ + μ - events. At the Z (J/ψ)(J/\psi ) ( J / ψ ) peak, the momentum scale is measured with an uncertainty at the 0.05% (0.1%) level, and the resolution is measured with an uncertainty at the 1.5% (2%) level. The charge-dependent bias is removed with a dedicated in situ correction for momenta up to 450 GeV with a precision better than 0.03  TeV1{\textrm{TeV}}^{-1} TeV - 1

English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa abstractsThis study aimed to explore the perceptions of secondary school heads about the effectiveness of result based management (RBM) in schools. For over a decade since its inception as a public sector management approach, the RBM system continues to encounter uptake-related problems in schools. There is not much-documented evidence about RBM effectiveness from the perspective of secondary school heads as institutional gate keepers and curators of the system at grass roots level. That constituted the problem to be addressed by this study. Research questions that guided the study sought to establish the school heads’ level of RBM awareness, its perceived applicability, perceived conditions for results-based effectiveness and strategies to improve its uptake and effectiveness. A qualitative research approach was adopted to investigate the perceptions of secondary school heads in the Highglen district, Harare. An intensive case study design involving 12 secondary school heads selected from 12 public secondary schools in Highglen was considered appropriate for this study. Qualitative research tools namely personal interviews and open-ended questionnaires were used to collect data. Analysis of the responses was done using the six-step model proposed by Creswell. Interpretation of data was done from the interpretivist world view. Empirical evidence from this study revealed that a majority of secondary school heads had a vague understanding of the meaning of the RBM system. It emerged that school heads were subjected to very limited exposure and training on RBM, hence, their limited appreciation thereof. School heads also perceived the RBM system as an extra burden because there were no benefits associated with it. At the school level, RBM was impeded by limited financial resources, lack of expertise and poor motivation. Result based evaluations and feedback lacked in schools. The appraisal form was perceived as too long and too wordy. Based on the literature review and findings, the study recommends the collaborative design of an improved result based management system. The study also recommends the use of both monetary and non-monetary incentives to improve the uptake of RBM.Die doel van die studie was om die persepsies van sekondere skoolhoofde oor die effektiwiteit van result based management (RBM) in skole te eksploreer. Injongo yolu phando yayikukuphonononga iimbono zeenqununu zezikolo eziziisekondari malunga nokusebenza ngempumelelo kolawulo olusekelwe kwiziphumo (RBM) ezikolweni. Modern war on ancient civilisations : Causes and responses to the looting and destruction of the ancient near east in the 21st century

    Get PDF
Text in EnglishThe conduct and decisions of three disparate groups: a de facto government (the Taliban), an invading state force (the US-led Coalition forces) and an internal armed force (the Islamic State), each with their own specific backgrounds and agendas had a significant and disastrous impact upon the cultural property of Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. Although the ancient reasons, the destruction of memory and genocide may still apply, there are additional reasons for the looting and destruction which differ from those historically accepted, and their analysis and application to existing measures designed to protect cultural property in such situations demonstrates their inability to respond in a practical and constructive manner. Many suggestions have been made to address this problem, but few address the source of the problem and seek instead to address the symptoms. If cultural property and its context are to survive long enough to reveal the knowledge and secrets it holds to ancient Near Eastern scholarship, the very manner in which it is viewed by the Eurocentric international community has to change, and the remaining traces of colonial arrogance have to be eliminated.D. Empowerment of small-scale communal forest growers based on four case studies: opportunities, challenges, and risks - towards a suitable solution

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to assess the challenges, opportunities, and risks of small scale communal forest projects across four communities in South Africa, and through this, to make a contribution to the neglected topic in the field of Geography of the commercial sustainability of traditional rural communities. The study is situated within the broader concerns of the levels of impoverishment amongst South Africa’s rural poor and the urgent need to expand the forestry industry and address the looming timber shortage. It examines small-scale communal forest projects at the intersection of the rural development discourse, people-centredness and community participation. Descriptive analyses were used to determine the socio-economic characteristics and demographics of households and community participants in the study areas; the multinomial regression model was used to determine the benefits, challenges and risks experienced by households across all four projects (i.e., Mkhambathi, Sinawo, and Ntywenka in the Eastern Cape Province and Mabandla in KwaZulu-Natal). The main challenges highlighted in the household interviews, focus group and key informants’ discussions revealed five major challenges: fires (i.e., forest fires [79%]), crime (timber theft [70%]), reduction of grazing land (45%), water shortages (4%) and lack of employment (32%). The study further indicates that there are opportunities as 80% of the sampled households perceived participation in the forest communal projects as a means to alleviating poverty. This is confirmed by the significant relationship (p<0.001) in the perceptions of household respondents on job creation. In the Sinawo project, 99% of the households perceived that job creation was due to the establishment of forest plantations in their area, the highest when compared to the other projects (i.e., 74% for Mkhambathi; 61% for Mabandla; and 39% for Ntywenka). The experience of community owned plantations in the Mabandla project clearly indicates that with adequate support, local communities can run plantation enterprises generating year-round employment and sustainable annual incomes. The study recommends as key ingredients for success: access to grant funding to leverage loans from a development finance institution such as the IDC; providing new entrants with the necessary technical and managerial support; and mentorship arrangements such as those provided by SAPPI, ECRDA and PG-Bison.D. Abstract in English with Afrikaans and Zulu translationsThe aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured phonics inter-vention programme to assist with reading acquisition in Grade 1 English submersion classrooms. The intervention programme included a teacher’s guide as well as a pho-netic reading book to assist learners in English on Grade 1 level. These learners have a different mother tongue than English and are referred to as English language learn-ers (ELLs). The research further investigated teacher perspectives on the effective-ness of the CAPS for English Home Language in relation to reading acquisition. The study adopted an intervention mixed method research approach to collect quali-tative and quantitative data. Data were collected in three phases: Data gathering meth-ods included interviews, a quasi-experiment, and a questionnaire. A total of 219 par-ticipants were involved in the study. Purposive sampling was used to select the par-ticipants for the interviews and questionnaires while cluster sampling was used to iden-tify the participants for the quasi-experiment to provide data. The participants were selected from three schools situated in different socio-economic areas in Mpuma-langa, South Africa. The conceptual framework of the study expounded the concept of English submersion classrooms and evaluated the current curriculum followed by ELLs in regard to reading acquisition. Three theories also underpinned the study: The social cognitive theory guided the psychological perspective, the complex dynamic systems theory guided the linguistic perspective while the componential model of reading guided the educational perspec-tive of the study. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the qualitative data while a software programme called SAS JMP (version 16) was used to analyse the quantita-tive data of the study. The findings of the study indicate that a structured phonics programme may be bene-ficial to assist ELLs with reading. The programme may also assist Grade 1 teachers in teaching Grade 1 learners how to read in English submersion classrooms. The re-search contributes a suggested phonics programme to be used in English submersion classrooms. This study is significant in that it contributes a model to consider when revising the curriculum to accommodate ELLs. The strucutured phonics programme is highly relevant for policy makers and curriculum designers to assist with reading ac-quisition in Grade 1 English submersion classrooms.Inhloso yocwaningo bekuwukuhlola ukusebenza kahle kohlelo lokungenelela lwemis-indo oluhlelekile ukusiza ngokutholakala kokufunda egumbini lokufundela lokuhlalisa isiNgisi ebangeni lokuqala (1). The dynamic causal relationship between remittances, fertility and unemployment in South Africa

    No full text
In this study, the causal relationship between remittances, fertility and unemployment in South Africa is re-examined using annual data from 1990 to 2020. The study was motivated by the need to reconsider the nature of this relationship after a sharp increase in remittance inflows into the country. The findings from this study would inform fertility policies in South Africa. The question that this study seeks to answer is: Can remittances play a role in the lowering of fertility and unemployment levels in South Africa? The study used total fertility as a measure of fertility; remittances as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP); and the strict definition of unemployment to examine the nature of the relationship between the three variables. Employing an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach to cointegration and the error correction model (ECM)-based causality model, the study found that there is a unidirectional causal flow from unemployment to fertility in the short run, and bidirectional causality between remittances and unemployment in both the short run and the long run. Bidirectional causality between fertility and remittances in the short run, and a unidirectional causal flow from fertility to remittances in the long run were also confirmed by the study. It can be concluded that South Africa may continue to formulate and implement policies that support remittance inflows in the battle against unemployment and high fertility rates. Policy implications are also discussed.Economic

Bank regulation and bank lending in selected sub-Saharan African countries

Most countries, including the ones in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), have been facing pressure to increase the stringency of bank regulation since the aftermath of the 2007-2008 global financial crisis. Therefore, this study analyses the relationship between bank regulation and bank lending in selected SSA countries and/or their low-income and middle-income groups from 1995 to 2017. First, the empirical results from the linear panel autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model estimated through the dynamic common correlated effects (CCE) method showed that bank entry barriers impacted bank lending negatively in the long run in all selected SSA economies and low-income SSA countries, while macroprudential policies had a negative long-run impact on bank credit in middle-income SSA economies, but supervisory power mitigated these effects. Alternatively, the findings from the nonlinear panel ARDL model indicated that various shocks to bank regulatory measures affected bank lending differently. Second, the dynamic panel threshold regression model results estimated through the generalised method of moments approach revealed that the threshold values for the stringency of bank entry barriers and capital regulations in the case of all selected SSA economies were 62.8% and 76.5%, respectively. The effect of bank entry barriers stringency on bank credit was found to be positive below its threshold value but negative above it, while that of capital regulation stringency was insignificant either below or above its threshold level. Lastly, the empirical findings from the panel error correction-based Granger causality models generally highlighted that long-run causality existed between bank regulatory measures and bank lending in the context of selected SSA countries and their income groups, while various shocks to bank regulatory measures and bank credit had different causal effects. Thus, the study recommends that policymakers should not introduce bank regulatory and supervisory reforms for their own sake, since regulations that are too stringent could hamper bank credit. Furthermore, regulatory authorities should take into consideration the existence of nonlinear and threshold effects in the relationship between bank regulation and bank lending as not doing so could lead to biased estimates and result in wrong policy conclusions.D.
