Vitamin D Receptor rs2228570 Gene Polymorphism Is Associated with Asthma Severity and Exacerbations
Vitamin D plays a crucial role in immune system function. Several studies have indicated that genetic variations in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) and vitamin D binding protein (VDBP, encoded by GC gene) increase the risk of developing asthma. However, the effect of these variations on the prognosis and clinical outcomes of asthma remains unclear. This study, involving 152 adult patients with asthma, aimed to assess the influence of VDR and GC polymorphisms on asthma severity and its exacerbation. Gene polymorphisms previously associated with asthma risk were analyzed, and VDR mRNA expression levels were evaluated in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The AA genotype of the VDR rs2228570 polymorphism was associated with an elevated risk of severe asthma compared to the AG/GG genotype (odds ratio, 3.20; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.24–8.28). Furthermore, patients with the rs2228570 AA genotype showed an elevated risk of exacerbation during the 1-year follow-up period (hazard ratio, 4.01; 95% CI, 1.75–9.15). VDR mRNA expression was significantly reduced in patients with the AA genotype. Furthermore, the mRNA expression levels of GLCCI1, HDAC2, NR3C1, and NFE2L2, which are associated with steroid response, were reduced in patients with the AA genotype. Our findings indicate that patients with the AA genotype of VDR rs2228570 are more likely to experience severe asthma and exacerbations. This polymorphism has the potential to reduce vitamin D efficacy by altering VDR function and expression, potentially resulting in increased inflammation and reduced steroid responsiveness in patients with asthma.journal articl

Differences in the Fruit Morphology of Goji Berry (Lycium chinense Mill.) among Local Strains and Harvesting Years
日本に分布するナス科クコ(Lycium chinense Mill.)の果実の利用に向けて,系統収集を試み,果実の形態の系統間差および年次間差を検討した。系統収集の結果,4つの地域(三重県鈴鹿市,長野県伊那市,群馬県太田市,千葉県酒々井町)から地域系統が得られた。それぞれの自生地において2019年から2024年の6年間にわたり果実を採集し,果実の生重,果実長,果実幅,種子数を計測した。生重は他の形質と強い相関関係にあったことから,果実サイズを代表する形質と見なした。また,果実の形状として縦横比(果実幅/果実長)を算出した。環境要因として,自生地付近の気象データをもとに,果実のデータ(生重と縦横比)と同一年の月平均気温および月降水量との相関を分析した。その結果,生重では年次間差が大きく,系統平均(0.21~0.55 g)間の差が有意ではなかった。一方,縦横比は,年次間差は見られるものの系統間差が最も顕著で,果実の細長いS 型(縦横比0.57~0.58,伊那系統と太田系統)と丸いR 型(縦横比0.77,鈴鹿系統と酒々井系統)とに2 極化していた。月平均気温は,すべての月で果実の生重と負の相関関係にあり,7月と9月に有意(それぞれr=-0.570,-0.590)であった。逆に,月平均気温はすべての月で縦横比と正の相関関係にあり,1~2月,5~6月,11~12月に有意(r=0.523~0.66 5)となった。一方,月降水量については,縦横比との間のみ,6月に負の,9月に正の有意な相関(それぞれr=-0.576,0.601)が認められた。これらのことから,高温は果実の果実サイズの抑制と縦横比の増大(R 型化)につながり,降水量は果実の縦横比に対して時期によって異なる影響をもつことが判明した。To promote the use of the fruit of wild goji berry (Lycium chinense Mill.) in Japan, we examined differences in the fruit morphology among local strains and harvesting years. We obtained four strains from four different areas: Suzuka (Mie Prefecture), Ina (Nagano Prefecture), Ota (Gunma Prefecture), and Shisui (Chiba Prefecture). The fruit was harvested in each strain’s habitat for 6 years (2019-2024), and then the raw fruit weight, length, width (transverse diameter), and number of seeds were measured. Among these indices, the raw fruit weight was considered to represent the fruit size because it was strongly correlated with the other measurements. As for the fruit shape, the ratio of the fruit width to length was calculated. In addition, meteorological data near the habitats were downloaded as an environmental factor, and then the correlations between the fruit data and the same year’s monthly meteorological data (average temperature and precipitation) were analyzed. The raw fruit weight showed a large difference among years, and the difference was not significant among the strain averages (0.21-0.55 g). By contrast, the ratio of the fruit width to length showed some differences among years, but these differences were most obvious among the strain averages when the ratio was divided into smaller values (i.e., slender shape; 0.57 in both the Ina and Ota strains) and larger values (i.e., round shape; 0.77 in both the Suzuka and Shisui strains). The average temperature in every month had a negative correlation with the raw fruit weight, and the correlation coefficient became significant in both July and September (r=-0.570 and -0.590, respectively). Conversely, the average temperature in every month had a positive correlation with the ratio of the fruit width to length, and the correlation coefficient became significant in January, February, May, June, November, and December (r=0.523-0.665). By contrast, monthly precipitation had a significant correlation only with the ratio of the fruit width to length in June (r=-0.576) and September (r=0.601). These results suggest that high temperatures reduce the size of the fruit and make it round, and that the influence of precipitation on the shape of the fruit differs by season.departmental bulletin pape
Survey of large and medium-sized mammals using camera traps in the Kayanodaira beech forest of the Institute for Nature Study, Shinshu University : Result of the 2023 survey
The large and medium-sized mammalian fauna within the Kayanodaira beech forest of the Institute for Nature Study, Shinshu University, in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture, Japan was surveyed using camera traps from August to November 2023. Five camera traps were set up within the survey area and recordings were obtained for a total of 475days. Twelve species of large and medium-sized mammals were recorded by the cameras : Sciurus lis, Lepus brachyurus, Paguma larvata, Nyctereutes procyonoides, Vulpes vulpes, Ursus thibetanus, Martes melampus, Meles anakuma, Mustela itatsi, Sus scrofa, Cervus nippon, and Felis catus.departmental bulletin pape
