Photoinduced cooling effect of water-retentive composite of TiO2 and saponite
TiO2 coating of a building envelope is expected to contribute to the mitigation of the heat-island effect because of the photoinduced cooling effect. However, the limited water adsorbability and retentivity of the TiO2 thin film can require successive sprinkling of water onto a building to achieve the sufficient cooling effect. In this study, a thin film consisting of a mixture of TiO2 and saponite was prepared through a sol–gel method. The high water retentivity of saponite was found to enhance the photoinduced cooling effect of the TiO2-based thin film. The photoinduced temporal change in the water adsorbability and retentivity of the highly hydrophilic composite was successfully monitored by using a hydrophilic xanthene dye adsorbed onto the coating as a probe. The effect of environmental humidity on the photoinduced cooling effect was also investigated. We found that higher humidity in the surrounding environment triggered stronger photoinduced cooling effects of the composite film. Especially during summer in Japan, when humidity is high, the TiO2–saponite composite film did not require intentional water sprinkling to achieve cooling effects.journal articl
Macrofungi Collected from the Nishikoma Experimental Forest of Shinshu University
We investigated the flora of macrofungi collected mainly in the Nishikoma Experimental Forest of Shinshu University from October 2023 to November 2024. A total of 494 specimens were collected: 249 from the montane zone, 154 from the subalpine zone, and 91 from the alpine zone. Sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of nuclear ribosomal RNA gene were obtained from 257 specimens. Among the collected specimens, 242 specimens were identified as 137 species that were previously reported in Japan. Amanita, Suillus, and Tricholoma were predominant in the montane zone, and Amanita, Cortinarius, and Tricholoma were abundant in the subalpine zone. In the alpine zone, Lactarius, Suillus, and Russula were dominant. In addition, four species (Hydnum tomaense, Lactarius glyciosmus, Lactarius sphagneti, and Russula betularum) were recorded for the first time from Honshu, the mainland of Japan. Meanwhile, 52 specimens probably represent unrecorded species in Japan, and 199 specimens remained unidentified to species. This study suggests that the macrofungal flora of the Nishikoma Experimental Forest of Shinshu University and its surrounding alpine areas contain a significant number of undescribed species or species new to Japan. Further studies are expected to contribute to the understanding of macrofungal diversity in Japan.departmental bulletin pape

Differences in the Number of Patients with Severe Hypoglycemia by Month and Their Type 2 Diabetes Background
Severe hypoglycemia is a serious complication of diabetes that can be directly linked to life prognosis and activities of daily living. However, sufficient knowledge regarding the trend of severe hypoglycemia has not been accumulated. In this study, 330 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus diagnosed with severe hypoglycemia were analyzed by the month of hypoglycemia onset. The patients were enrolled from those who visited the Critical Care Center of Aizawa Hospital over a 12-year period, from January 1, 2008, to December 31, 2019. The results showed that the number of patients with hypoglycemia was the lowest in February and the highest in September. Blood pressure (both systolic and diastolic) was the lowest in September and the highest in June. Blood glucose levels were the lowest in May and the highest in July. HbA1c values were the lowest in August and the highest in October. We also examined differences in the types of drugs administered. The number of drugs administered was the lowest in October and the highest in February. In addition, the proportion of DPP4 inhibitors was the highest in February for patients with hypoglycemia. The results of this study showed a month-tomonth difference in the tendency of patients to visit the emergency room for severe hypoglycemia. In particular, we considered that it was necessary to pay attention to severe hypoglycemia in patients with good glycemic control in the winter months who require treatment with multiple drugs, and in patients with inadequate control in October.journal articl
