Significance of leaflet shape in palmate leaves

    Get PDF
In the present study, the leaflet shape of palmate leaves was considered based on geometric analyses and morphometric data collected from three species of Akebia (Lardizabalaceae): A. quinata (AQ), A. × pentaphylla (AP) and A. trifoliata (AT). In the geometric analysis, we assumed that the leaflet conformed to a sector of a perfect circle, hypothesizing that the length/breadth ratio for a leaflet in a palmately penta -foliolate leaf was theoretically 1.47 times greater than that for a trifoliolate leaf. In another geometric analysis, we assumed that each leaflet represented a perfect circle in a trifoliolate leaf, and found that the extent of leaflet overlap could be calculated as a function of k and θ, where k represents the proportion of the terminal leaflet area to the total area of leaflets, and θ represents the angle formed by the midribs of the terminal and lateral leaflets. The extent of overlap was largest when k = 0.3 to 0.4, with the area decreasing more rapidly for minor variations in k with more acute θ. Based on the morphometric data, the length/breadth ratio for leaflets decreased in the order AQ > AP > AT, and the average AQ/AT ratio was 1.44, which is close to that predicted theoretically. However, the average AP/AT ratio was 1.28, which is smaller than the theoretically predicted value. The largest leaflet/smallest leaflet ratio decreased in the order AP > AQ > AT, and the average AQ/AT and AP/AT ratios were 1.19 and 1.28, respectively. For AP, the presence more acute angles ( θ) and more rounded leaflets was predicted to increase the likelihood of leaflet overlap; however, an increase in k (i.e. largest leaflet/smallest leaflet ratio) was considered to reduce the likelihood of geometric overlap.Article環境科学年報 46 : 1-7, (2024)journal articl

Centimeter-scale micro air vehicle using explosive evaporation due to underwater electrical discharge

    Get PDF
Developing a powerful micro-engine capable of continuous operation is vital for a next-generation micro-air vehicle (MAV). Here, we propose a centimeter-scale MAV using explosive evaporation due to underwater electrical discharge. Specifically, by fabricating the MAV (which is tethered to a pendulum and consists of an L-shaped tube and a pair of discharge electrodes), we demonstrate that the MAV can continue to move in air with a maximum velocity of ∼0.4 m s−1. Moreover, through an additional experiment, we find that our device can be used in an untethered state by using a pair of electrodes as an antenna with a pair of external electrodes. Our findings should contribute to next-generation MAVs in the future.Hideyuki Sugioka et al 2024 Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 63 017007journal articl

A Case of Non-occlusive Mesenteric Ischemia with Massive Hepatic Portal Venous Gas Treated Conservatively

    Get PDF
Non-occlusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI) is caused by ischemia and necrosis of the intestinal tract without organic obstruction of the main mesenteric artery. Accordingly, in many cases, resection of the ischemic intestinal tract is performed to save the life of the patient. However, conservative treatment has also been reported in some cases. Arterial vasodilator therapy using angiography is considered the gold standard for NOMI treatment. However, for facilities without capacity for angiography, conservative management is needed. Herein, we report a case of NOMI in an 85-year-old woman hospitalized for an odontoid process fracture. On post-admission day 14, the patient developed acute onset of epigastric pain, with evidence of hepatic portal venous gas (HPVG) on computed tomography (CT) abdominal imaging. In the absence of peritoneal irritation and findings suggestive of intestinal necrosis on blood tests, combined with the risk of cervical cord injury with intubation for surgery, we initiated continuous intravenous administration of prostaglandin E1 (PGE1, 0.01 μg/kg/min) on the same day of symptom onset, achieving resolution of epigastric pain on the next day. PGE1 administration was continued to day 5 after symptom onset, with no worsening of symptoms after PGE1 discontinuation. Blood tests showed no deterioration (Fig. 1). The patient was discharged on day 63. Continuous intravenous infusion of PGE1 for NOMI may be an option for the conservative treatment of early onset or no intestinal necrosis-associated NOMI.信州医学雑誌 72(5) : 271-276, (2024)journal articl
