Bird species assemblages in areas of Shiga Highlands and Jusan-gake Cliff in northern Nagano, central Japan
We examined the relationship between bird species richness, frequency of occurrence( FO), and dominance in relation to the habitat environment in continuous mountainous areas extending from the Shiga Highlands to the Jusan-gake Cliff in northern Nagano, central Japan. A total of 42-point count survey plots were established along the National Route 292 and the northern part of the Nakano alluvial fan. These plots were categorized into three habitat environmental types : sparse woodland and alpine habitat( 13 plots), forest habitat( 9 plots), and rural habitat( 20 plots). Individuals of birds observed within a 75-meter radius over 10 minutes were recorded based on visual identification, songs, and calls. Point count surveys were conducted on June 19–20 and July 23, 2024. Across all survey plots, a total of 33 species and 313 individuals were recorded. In the sparse woodland and alpine habitat, 13 species and 49 individuals were recorded ; in the forest habitat, 14 species and 43 individuals were recorded ; and in the rural habitat, 19 species and 217 individuals were observed. The species with the highest FO and dominance in both the sparse woodland/alpine and forest habitats was the Japanese Bush Warbler (Cettia diphone), whereas the Eurasian Tree Sparrow( Passer montanus) was the most dominant species in rural environments. The FO and dominance patterns were consistent across all three habitat environmental types. This study highlights that although various habitat environments exist in the continuous mountainous region from the Shiga Highlands to the Jusan-gake Cliff area, the FO and dominance of bird species varied according to habitat and elevation. However, the recorded species were distributed as expected based on their ecological preferences. In the sparse woodland and alpine habitat, although classified as subalpine coniferous forest, the bird community exhibited similarities to those found in other forest types. Future research should explore the relationship between species richness and elevation to further enhance the understanding of this study area.departmental bulletin pape

No Worsening of Glycemic Control in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus for Three Years during COVID-19 Pandemic Restrictions in Japan
Objective : To investigate whether the restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic influenced glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (2DM) in Japan. Methods : We conducted a retrospective cohort study. Data was obtained from 351 outpatients with 2DM who visited a single center from January 2019 to September 2023. Changes to random plasma glucose (RPG) and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels, and the number of hypoglycemic agents (prescriptions)/patients were analyzed. Seasonal changes (first quarter vs. third quarter of the year), gender (female vs. male), and ages (~64 years, 65-74 years and 75 years~) were considered as factors for glycemic control. Results : RPGs and HbA1cs levels did not significantly increase in a time-dependent manner during the study period, as previously reported. However, seasonal changes, gender differences, and age-dependent differences were observed to be significant (p<0.05) factors for glycemic control. The number of hypoglycemic agents, including metformin, SGLT-2 antagonists, and GLP-1 agonists, increased yearly (p<0.001). Conclusion : The absence of a time-dependent worsening of glycemic control in patients with 2DM during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan may be related psycho-social effects mediated by restrictions that were in place. Additionally improvements adherence to anti-glycemic medications may have been present.journal articl

departmental bulletin pape
