    The e-Cigarrette. Myths and Facts

    Tema del mesExisten múltiples mitos alrededor de los cigarrillos electrónicos, algunos de éstos han determinado en el importante crecimiento de su popularidad en los últimos años. Por ejemplo, en diversos sitios de Internet se argumenta que son seguros, ya que su uso no afecta la salud como lo hacen los cigarros de tabaco, por lo que podrían ser una alternativa socialmente aceptable de consumo, así como una herramienta que ayude a dejar de fumar a personas que así lo deseen. En contraste, cada vez hay más evidencias científicas que demuestran que la composición del vapor que emiten tiene gran cantidad de sustancias tóxicas que pueden dañar la salud de los consumidores, provocar adicción e incluso llegar a explotar y causar daños severos en rostro y manos. A raíz de ello, existe confusión entre la población de cuáles son los riesgos o beneficios al emplearlos. Este artículo pretende esclarecer algunos mitos y presentar realidades sobre el tema, que le permitirán al lector tener un conocimiento científico y crítico sobre el uso de estos productos. Se menciona qué son, cómo funcionan, qué sustancias tóxicas contienen, su cuestionable utilidad como una ayuda para dejar de fumar y cuál es la situación en nuestro país sobre su comercializaciónThere are many myths around the e-cigarettes, and most of them have contributed to spread its use in the last few years. As an example, many websites emphasize that these cigarettes are safe and a better option than tobacco cigarettes since they are socially acceptable; others sell them as a practical tool to stop smoking. On the other hand, each day there are new scientific evidences reporting a high toxicity for the vapor they exhale and, therefore, a hazard for the consumer’s health. There is also clinical evidence that indicates that their use may cause addiction because of the indiscriminate use of nicotine and also reports of explosions that cause serious damage to the consumers’ face and hands. With such a controversy there is disorientation in the general population about the risks or benefits of e-cigarettes. In this article, we present information about myths and facts of e-cigarettes, which will allow the reader to have a scientific and critical knowledge of these products. We mention how they work, what type of toxic substances they contain, and its questionable impact as tools to stop smoking and, finally, what is happening in Mexico with these device

Así, la Dirección de Danza de la UNAM decidió crear su propio repositorio para divulgar una serie de eventos dancísticos grabados en instalaciones universitarias.     Tema del mesRecientemente, la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), por medio de la Dirección de Danza, puso a disposición de investigadores, académicos y público en general el primer repositorio digital de arte en la universidad. Hablamos de la creación de un espacio educativo de consulta digital que permite a la comunidad universitaria y a todos los interesados acceder al acervo coreográfico de la danza en la UNAM que comprende el periodo 2009-2015. La puesta en marcha de este repositorio especializado en danza viene a llenar un vacío en materia informativa, pues en México son pocas las instituciones que se han preocupado por el destino de la documentación que ha generado la danza a través del tiempo. En este artículo se comentará la importancia de la documentación de la danza y se darán a conocer los esfuerzos que realizan algunas instituciones en este rubro y los trabajos que llevan a cabo para preservar, organizar y difundir la memoria de la danza en nuestro paísRecently, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), through the Directorate of Dance, put available to researchers, scholars and the public in general the first digital repository of art at the University.     Is it worth to think of democracy? Images of collage students

    Tema del mesEl propósito de este trabajo es conocer las imágenes de la democracia que elaboran estu-diantes universitarios. Se obtuvo una muestra intencional de alumnos de la Facultad de Estudios Profesionales Zaragoza de la Universidad Na-cional Autónoma de México, que corresponde al 5.25% de matriculados en el segundo semestre del año 2012. Presentamos la información obtenida a la pregunta ¿vale la pena pensar en la democracia? Esto nos per-mitió identificar aspectos de la dimensión actitudinal de las Representaciones Sociales organizadas a partir de la tensión entre el ser y el deber ser, como voces en conflicto. El 84.3% de los encuestados contestó de ma-nera afirmativa y el 15.2% respondió por la negativa. Al realizar un análisis de contenido a los argumentos de las respuestas encontramos que en el primer grupo está presente una orientación optimista, que transita de un optimismo ideal hacia un optimismo acotado o condicionado y que la democracia se valora por su fina-lidad y sus logros, como instrumento para resolver los problemas del país. Quienes respondieron que no vale la pena pensar en la democracia manifestaron funda-mentalmente un pesimismo extremo, en la cual está presente la alternativa autoritaria. Finalmente se analizan las implicaciones de estos resultadosThe purpose of this paper is to know the image that college students have of democracy. A purposive sample was obtained from the Faculty of Professional Studies Zaragoza of the National Autonomous University of Mexico; this sample corresponds to the 5.25% of the enlisted students in the second half of 2012. The information gained from the question “is it worth to think of democracy? “ was presented, allowing us to identify aspects from the attitudinal dimension of social representations organized from the tension between being and what must be, as conflicting voices. 84.3% of the answers were affirmative, meanwhile 15.2% was negative. Upon analysis of content to the arguments given in the answers, it was found that in the first group an optimistic orientation was present, it transiting from an ideal optimism towards a bound or conditioned optimism and that democracy it’s valued by its purpose and achievements, as an instrument to resolve the country’s problems. The ones who responded that it isn’t worth to think about democracy showed an extreme pessimism, in which is present the authoritarian alternative.     Presencia UniversitariaLa necesidad de dormir ocho horas ha tomado relevancia en la actualidad, debido en parte a que se ha encontrado que la privación de sueño tiene un vínculo con el aumento de enfermedades de tipo metabólico como la diabetes mellitus, enfermedades cardiovasculares y en trastornos de índole afectivo. El estilo de vida que llevamos desde hace décadas ha provocado que al sueño no se le dé la importancia que merece, conduciendo al consumo de cafeína o cualquier otro tipo de estimulantes para mantenernos despiertos hasta altas horas de la noche, dejando en último lugar el sueño. La privación de sueño puede estar relacionada con la diabetes mellitus; sin embargo, no es un trabajo sencillo encontrar cómo esta enfermedad metabólica puede provocar un tipo de demencia como es el Alzheimer. Actualmente existen datos en los que se demuestra una asociación entre la privación de sueño, la cual provoca hiperglucemia en la sangre, y como ésta se vincula con déficit cognitivo. El presente artículo explica a través de estudios realizados en humanos y en animales, la relación entre la privación de sueño y la diabetes, y cómo la diabetes puede causar demencia tipo Alzheimer.The need of eight hours of sleep has taken relevance today, partly because it has been found that sleep deprivation has a link with increased metabolic diseases type such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases and disorders of affective nature.. The lifestyle that we have for decades has caused sleep is not given the importance it deserves, we consume caffeine or other of stimulants to stay awake late into the night, leaving last sleep. Sleep deprivation may be related to diabetes mellitus and how this metabolic disease can cause a type of dementia such as Alzheimer's, is not a simple work, however there are now data in which a causal association between sleep deprivation demostrated hyperglycemia causes blood and how it is linked to cognitive deficits.     Tema del mesCuando hablamos de que algo es masivo, casi de inmediato cancelamos la posibilidad de intimidad, cercanía o individualización. Sin embargo, en los cursos masivos abiertos en línea (MOOC, por sus siglas en inglés) es posible lograr ese sentido de intimidad. El propósito de este artículo es presentar vías que permiten al diseñador de MOOC lograr ese contacto cercano que se relaciona con mejores índices de retención y egreso. La discusión se encuadra en la perspectiva de comunidad de indagación de Anderson y Garrison, que incluye no sólo la presencia cognitiva, relacionada con los conocimientos a aprender, sino con la social y la docente, que generan el sentido de cercanía y pertenencia entre estudiantes y con el docente. El análisis se ejemplifica con la experiencia derivada de los MOOC Ser más creativos y Aprender, de la UNAM, en la plataforma de CourseraWhen we speak of something is massive, almost immediately we cancel the possibility of intimacy, closeness or individualization. However, in the massive open online courses (MOOC, for its acronym in English) is possible to achieve that sense of intimacy. The purpose of this article is to present ways that allow MOOC designer to achieve this close contact, which is related to better retention and graduation rates. The discussion fits into the perspective of community of inquiry of Anderson and Garrison, which includes not only cognitive presence related knowledge to learn, but with the social and teaching, that generate the sense of closeness and belonging among students and the teacher.
