The AI art school: A speculative design workshop
No full text[I was organiser of the workshop] Funded and hosted by GLAD Group for Learning in Art & Design Higher Education, of which I was a committee member. 65 participants from UK and Ireland HEIs took part in a full-day speculative design workshop led by creative practitioners from the Royal College of Art. All explored emerging and future challenges related to artificial intelligence in the creative education space through a panel discussion, experimental workshop and roundtable conversation. The panel brought together researchers, artists and experts in AI and the arts, to give a horizon scan on where we are now, and raised several unique provocations for attendees to consider as educators and citizens in the AI space. In the workshop, attendees experimented actively with digital and analogue tools to bring generative, collective and artificial intelligences into the creative space, and reflected on how they can influence both teaching and outcomes. The roundtable closed the day as an open forum for discussion on creative AI in education, including reflection on what creative AI futures we want, and how to actively engage with creating them. It was a playful and dynamic day of engaging critically with the future of creative AI and the future of education, useful to educators and policymakers alike

Transferability: Exploring ontological properties for design knowing
Get PDFThe nature of design ontology continues to be explored as a crucial step in building closer relationships between the domains of the sciences, arts & humanities, and design. We focus thinking by design researchers including the co-authors to question the true nature of design ontology and its relationship to time, core design practices, reliability, and collaboration across domains. We examine how temporal relationships can drive a new definition of core domain level practices via an examination of Archer’s wroughting and wrighting as core practices for design. Our exploration identifies transferability as being the ontological essence of design. However, this raises serious problems in terms of rigour and reliability. We propose an ontological mirror that explains the diverse nature of design while addressing serious rigour issues. This formally positions design as knowledge for future transformation
A recipe for happiness
No full textA Recipe for Happiness: Saponaria Officinalis (Soapwort) Saponaria Officinalis, a magical plant featured extensively in an ancient therapeutic tablet found in Ashur, is used for a variety of cleansing rituals including basic laundry, abortions, cleansing the female body during the menstrual cycle, extracting the placenta after childbirth, and healing the body and spirit from negative energies. Some of these concoctions were held in amulets reminiscent of those in Tawfik Canaan’s collections and worn on the body to expel negative energies and spirits. The stone-carved tablet now held at the Istanbul Archaeological Museum is part of a collection of Neo-Assyrian tablets formed by exorcist Kisir Assur. The recipe for happiness, to be performed the first day of the year, involves anointing the body with a mix of the blue lapis lazuli stone (lazaward), filtered oil, and crushed soapwort. The person is to rub the body with this paste and tie a lazaward bead in the hem of their garment. To finally expel the negative energies, the impurities are to be transferred to two doves and a fish. A male dove flying east and a female dove flying west carry off the impurities into the distance while the fish carries them from the person’s spit into depths unknown to reside with Enki, the Sumerian god of water. The exhibition uses material components from the in-depth research and maps that rich history onto a sewn textile. The piece is inspired by the fabric amulets found in Tawfik Canaan’s hujub collection as well as illustrations of ancient cleansing procedures and rituals

Standard block and modular dwelling designs in Hong Kong’s public housing
Get PDFThis paper examines the role of standard block and modular dwelling designs in Hong Kong’s public housing provision since the mid-1950s. It explores how standard types have evolved in relation to housing policies, demographic and socio-economic changes, and minimum space requirements. In contrast to other countries, Hong Kong lacks defined space or room standards. In the absence of space standards, Hong Kong relies on a living density standard. This paper studies the historical development of Hong Kong’s public housing in terms of dwelling size as a measure of housing quality, questioning the effectiveness of standard block and dwelling designs as housing design controls and highlighting the contextual nature of dwelling usability and size. The analysis is based on public housing design projects, policies, and data implemented or presented by the Hong Kong government, particularly the Hong Kong Housing Authority
