Empowerment in the interpersonal field: discourses of acute mental health nurses
No full textSocial policy greatly influences the working environment of mental health nurses but in practice can be difficult to translate. Empowerment of service users is one area that is constantly significant in policy, locally and nationally, yet quite difficult to define in practice. This ethnomethodological study explored the practice of 10 mental health nurses working in an acute admissions unit. Through semi-structured interviews, the nurses were asked to discuss the taken-for-granted methods of empowerment with individual service users, their families and with work colleagues. The results were thematically analysed and compared with international findings, which reflected an awareness among mental health nurses of empowering practice in four areas. These were: Working with mental illness, Making connections, Responsibility and Teamworking
MOCVD of ultra-thin PV solar cell devices using a pyrite based p-i-n structure
Get PDFUltra-thin photovoltaic (PV) devices were produced by atmospheric pressure metal organic chemical vapour deposition (AP-MOCVD) incorporating a highly absorbing intermediate sulphurised FeSₓ layer into a CdS/CdTe structure. X ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed a transitional phase change to pyrite FeS₂ after post growth sulphur (S) annealing of the FeSₓ layer between 400⁰C and 500⁰C. Devices using a superstrate configuration incorporating a sulphurised or non sulphurised FeSₓ layer were compared to p-n devices with only a CdS/CdTe structure. Devices with sulphurised FeSₓ layers performed least efficiently, even though pyrite fractions were present. Rutherford back scattering (RBS) confirmed deterioration of the CdS/FeSₓ interface due to S inter-diffusion during the annealing process
Holographic Optical Elements Recorded in Silver Halide Sensitized Gelatin Emulsions. Part 2. Reflection Holographic Optical Elements
No full textSilver halide sensitized gelatin (SHSG) holograms are similar to holograms recorded in dichromated gelatin (DCG), the main recording material for holographic optical elements (HOEs). The drawback of DCG is its low energetic sensitivity and limited spectral response. Silver halide materials can be processed in such a way that the final hologram will have properties like a DCG hologram. Recently this technique has become more interesting since the introduction of new ultra-fine-grain silver halide (AgHal) emulsions. In particular, high spatial-frequency fringes associated with HOEs of the reflection type are difficult to construct when SHSG processing methods are employed. Therefore an optimized processing technique for reflection HOEs recorded in the new AgHal materials is introduced. Diffraction efficiencies over 90% can be obtained repeatably for reflection diffraction gratings. Understanding the importance of a selective hardening process has made it possible to obtain results similar to conventional DCG processing. The main advantage of the SHSG process is that high-sensitivity recording can be performed with laser wavelengths anywhere within the visible spectrum. This simplifies the manufacturing of high-quality, large-format HOEs, also including high-quality display holograms of the reflection type in both monochrome and full color
Interaction of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate with Methacrylate−PEG Comb Copolymers
No full textA series of sodium methacrylate and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) comb copolymers (MAA/PEG) with approximate PEG chain lengths of 7, 11, and 22 ethylene oxide units were synthesized by free radical polymerization. Their weight-average molecular mass was found to be 66000. A commercial sample of a PEG comb polymer with an acrylic backbone was also used in the studies (Sokalan HP 80). The interaction of the MAA/PEG comb polymers and pure sodium methacrylate (SPMA) with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was studied by ESR spectroscopy using 5-doxyl stearic acid (5-DSA) spin probe and by conductivity measurements. Surfactant aggregation in water occurred at SDS concentrations lower than the surfactant critical micelle concentration (cmc) and depended on the polymer concentration. The observations have been attributed to changes in the effective ionic strength of the systems due to the polymer itself, and it has been concluded that there is no interaction between the MAA/PEG comb copolymers or SPMA and SDS. This has been confirmed by the fact that the decrease in surfactant aggregation concentration is similar in magnitude to the decrease observed on adding NaCl when counterion ion condensation effects are taken into account. It is apparent that the electrostatic repulsions between the surfactant molecules and the methacrylate backbone of the MAA/PEG comb copolymers inhibit association of SDS with the PEG side chains

A nine country survey of youth in Europe: selected findings and issues
Get PDFA nine country survey of the life orientations, values and institutional trust of 8948 young people at the upper end of the secondary school age range was set up at the University of Würzburg in the year 2000. Key findings demonstrate that these young people value personal autonomy and are orientated to success in their professional lives and that they especially trust human rights and environmental groups. Religion is associated positively with humanitarianism and in some countries negatively with modernity. These findings provide an indication of the typical life stances of future opinion-formers and illustrate methodological issues thrown up by international research
