An Approach for Characterising Heavy-Tailed Internet Traffic Based on EDF Statistics
In this research, statistical analyses of Web traffic were carried out based on the Empirical Distribution Function (EDF) test. Several probability distributions, such as Pareto (simple), extreme value, Weibull (three parameters), exponential, logistic and Pareto (generalized) have been chosen to fit the experimental traffic data (traces), which show an analytical indication of traffic behaviour. The issues of traffic characterisation and performance shown by these models are discussed in terms of the heavy tailedness and fitness of the curves. Effect of Polydispersity on Fluorescence Quenching in Micelles Formed by Telechelic Associative Polymers
Time-resolved fluorescence quenching studies, using pyrene as a probe for micellar environments in solutions of a telechelic associating polymer based on PEG with n-C12 (dodecyl) hydrophobic end groups, have been carried out to determine the aggregation number(s) of the micelles. At low [pyrene]/[hydrophobe] values, η, quencher-average aggregation numbers, Nq, calculated from the fitting of the fluorescence decay curves to the Infelta equation were found to decrease rapidly as η increased. By fitting the Nq vs η plots to a cubic curve [Warr, G. G.; Grieser, F. J. Chem. Soc., Faraday Trans. 1 1986, 82, 1813], this observation was shown to be consistent with a highly skewed, polydisperse distribution of micelle aggregation numbers, described by a weight-average aggregation number of 75 and a standard deviation of 86. For a given polymer concentration in the range 1.0−2.5 g dL-1, the fluorescence decay curves did not produce parallel log(I/I0) vs time plots, as would be expected for a monodisperse array of micelles. Instead, the plots showed a characteristic intersection. Simulation of these curves using Infelta-type equations could not reproduce this behavior, indicating that a more refined model may be needed. This detailed study of the distribution of aggregation number in associative telechelic polymers is discussed in the context of recent investigations [Meng, X.-X.; Russel, W. B. Macromolecules 2005, 38, 593], from which it is suggested that polydispersity of micelle size is to be expected as a normal feature of such systems
Simulation of Wind Heat Generator
Wind turbines are traditionally used to generate electrical energy. However for small, remote applications a wind turbine can also be used to convert wind power into thermal power in order to reduce the cost of energy used for heating sys-tems. The wind heat generator is based on the principle of the Joule machine driven by a wind turbine. To obtain optimal per-formance the torque-speed characteristics of the turbine and the heat generator should be matched. By recognising this require-ment the model of a wind heat generator was developed and simu-lated. The result of the simulation shows the behavior of the wind heat generator operating at maximum power
Temporal stability of the Francis Scale of Attitude toward Christianity: Test-retest data over five weeks
Recently Lewis, Cruise, and Mc Guckin (2005) have reported on the test-retest reliability of the 7-item version of the Francis Scale of Attitude toward Christianity; however, their study was limited. The present aim was to evaluate the temporal stability of both the 24- and 7-item versions of the Francis Scale of Attitude toward Christianity over a five-week period among a sample of 114 Irish undergraduate university students. Data demonstrated that stability across the two administrations was very high for both the 24- (r = .95) and 7-item (r = .94) versions. These data support the short-term test-retest reliability of both the 24- and 7-item versions of the Francis Scale of Attitude toward Christianity

Tackling Problem Drug Use: A New Conceptual Framework
Successful 'recovery' from long-term problem drug use has depended largely upon understanding and tackling the physiological and psychological nature of drug dependence; however, drawing upon research and practice in Liverpool, England, the author questions whether this discourse is sufficient given the changing nature, context and attitudes towards drug consumption in the twenty-first century. This article emphasises the importance of incorporating structural and social factors. Drawing upon qualitative data from three separate studies, the author illustrates how stigmatisation, marginalisation, and social exclusion are significant debilitating components that have tended to be overlooked. This paper contributes new insights into the damaging impact of political rhetoric and structural discrimination that has placed many long-term drug users vulnerable to relapse. In response to these findings the author offers a new conceptual framework for practice that incorporates and promotes an understanding of the social nature and context of long-term drug dependence
I’ll (not) see you in court: family dispute resolution in North Wales
This paper draws on a qualitative evaluation of the CAFCASS Cymru’s Family Dispute Resolution Pilot Programme (FDRP) in North Wales. The FDRP was developed as a child centred intervention aimed at resolving disputes involving children, without recourse to the courts. The evaluation comprised postal questionnaires for parents and qualitative interviews with a sample of parents, children and professionals engaging with the programme. Overall, both professionals and families were very positive about the programme. However, while valuing the FDRP child centred imperative, some parents found it (a) difficult to relinquish their attachment to personal grievances with the other parent and (b) less empowering. Also, while the programme was founded on the principle of agreement, for many of the interviewees issues of enforcement were also important. That is, some professionals argued that an element of compulsion was needed for parents to engage in the FDRP process and comply with agreed outcomes. Likewise, some parents said they wanted continued CAFCASS Cymru input to ensure that the agreed arrangements were observed. In conclusion, while both professionals and parents were highly supportive of the programme, they highlighted issues which have resource implications for an already resource heavy service
Dual-Frequency Planar Inverted F-L-Antenna (PIFLA) for WLAN and Short Range Communication Systems
The design and analysis is presented of a low profile and dualfrequency inverted L-F antenna for WLAN and short range wireless communications, providing a compromise between size reduction and attainable bandwidth. The optimum (minimized) volume of 30 30 8 mm of the proposed antenna gives 8% bandwidth at lower resonant mode of 2400 MHz, while at the higher resonant mode of 5500 MHz a bandwidth of 12.2% is obtained. Both the simulated and measured characteristics of the proposed antenna are shown
