    An Illustrative Discussion of Different Perspectives in Network Engineering

    This paper presents three case studies in network design and management from the different, but often overlapping and blurred, perspectives of the theorist and practitioner. It addresses the gulf between the comfortable models of graph theory, statistics and suchlike and the harsh realities of real-world networks. As, through these case studies, it becomes evident that network techniques, algorithms, etc. at large in the Internet bear little resemblance to their counterparts in the textbooks, the question is posed (and partially answered) as to whether the original theory is really any use

    A Simple Algorithm for Sidelobe Cancellation in a Partially Adaptive Linear Array

    The far-field lobes of the edge elements of a uniformly excited linear array are nearly equal in width to the sidelobes of the array itself, and hence the edge elements are ideal for cancellation of specific sidelobes of the pattern. This supports the concept of partial adaptivity using only the edge elements. This technique is suitable for real-time implementation because only the edge elements require direct control whereas the inner elements are controlled by PROM’s. Other advantages are that the nulls produced specifically by control of the edge elements are deep and wide. Also the main beam gain is not much affected by the sidelobe cancellation

    Combination of features from skin pattern and ABCD analysis for lesion classification

    Background/Purpose: It is known that the standard features for lesion classification are ABCD features, that is, asymmetry, border irregularity, colour variegation and diameter of lesion. However, the observation that skin patterning tends to be disrupted by malignant but not by benign skin lesions suggests that measurements of skin pattern disruption on simply captured white light optical skin images could be a useful contribution to a diagnostic feature set. Previous work using both skin line direction and intensity for lesion classification was encouraging. But these features have not been combined with the ABCD features. This paper explores the possibility of combing features from skin pattern and ABCD analysis to enhance classification performance. Methods: The skin line direction and intensity were extracted from a local tensor matrix of skin pattern. Meanwhile, ABCD analysis was conducted to generate six features. They were asymmetry, border irregularity, colour (red, green and blue) variegations and diameter of lesion. The eight features of each case were combined using a principal component analysis (PCA) to produce two dominant features for lesion classification. Results: A larger set of images containing malignant melanoma (MM) and benign naevi were processed as above and the scatter plot in a two-dimensional dominant feature space showed excellent separation of benign and malignant lesions. An ROC (receiver operating characteristic) plot enclosed an area of 0.94. Conclusions: The classification results showed that the individual features have a limited discrimination capability and the combined features were promising to distinguish MM from benign lesion

    A Backup Gateway to Access a Service-oriented Heterogeneous Home Network

    Domotics has been favoured by a constant increase of popularity in the last decade. Because of the many home network concepts in this field, it is potentially viable to include several different network technologies in a home automation system; if these technologies are optimally combined then it is presumable to accomplish better results in performance, affordability and stability. For this reason, it is recommended to use each of them for the use of specific services that fit more accurately with their characteristics and capabilities. Nonetheless, besides the diversity of such environments, they all share a common subject: a need for remote control. Actual trends in Domotics are closely oriented to the foremost elements associated with ubiquitous control, which is a significant topic due to the important advantages of having the possibility to manage home services from anywhere at any time. This paper describes a model for a secure, scalable and reliable remote-controlled home automation system; the role of this model is to provide users with a backup gateway to be able to control the services at home (or other buildings) in case of a failure of the main access. The development is focused on a proper handling of the underlying technologies, invisible to the user, to enable the backup gateway agents communicate with both the external agents and the home network agents

    Advances in Similarity-Based Audio Compression

    Existing lossy audio compression techniques such as MP3, WMA and Ogg Vorbis, for example, demonstrate great success in providing compression ratios which successfully reduce the data size from the original sampled audio. These techniques employ psychoacoustic models and traditional statistical coding techniques to achieve data reduction. However, these methods do not take into account the perceived content of the audio, which is often particularly relevant in musical audio. In this paper, we present our research and development work completed to date, in producing a system for audio analysis, which will consider and exploit the repetitive nature of audio and the similarities which frequently occur in audio recordings. We demonstrate the feasibility and scope of the analysis system and consider the techniques and challenges that are employed to achieve data reduction

    Emotion, Content & Context in Sound and Music

    Computer game sound is particularly dependent upon the use of both sound artefacts and music. Sound and music are media rich in information. Audio and music processing can be approached from a range of perspectives which may or may not consider the meaning and purpose of this information. Computer music and digital audio are being advanced through investigations into emotion, content analysis, and context, and this chapter attempts to highlight the value of considering the information content present in sound, the context of the user being exposed to the sound, and the emotional reactions and interactions that are possible between the user and game sound. We demonstrate that by analysing the information present within media and considering the applications and purpose of a particular type of information, developers can improve user experiences and reduce overheads while creating more suitable, efficient applications. Some illustrated examples of our research projects that employ these theories are provided. Although the examples of research and development applications are not always examples from computer game sound, they can be related back to computer games. We aim to stimulate the reader’s imagination and thought in these areas, rather than attempt to drive the reader down one particular path

    The Detection of Dissociative Identity Disorder by Northern Irish Clinical Psychologists and Psychiatrists: A Clinical Vignettes Study

    A sample of Northern Irish clinical psychologists (N=27) and psychiatrists (N=29) completed three clinical vignettes designed to assess the detection of dissociative identity disorder. Data suggested that psychiatrists and clinical psychologists were better able to detect dissociative identity disorder when discriminating and characteristic symptoms were present. However, the majority of clinicians still failed to diagnose dissociative identity disorder as the most likely condition in a clear-cut case
