A Thematic Review of Contemporary Accounts of Black and of White Residents in North-East Wales Towards Black/White Interracial Relationships
Exploring accounts of relations between racial groups has been identified as a key focus within the social sciences, with the views expressed towards intermarriage between members of particular groups often presented as a barometer for wider intergroup attitudes. Studies concerning interracial relationships have been particularly rare in Wales and remain unexplored within North Wales; this study seeks to address this gap in the knowledge base. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six Black participants, six White participants, and one participant of mixed Black/White heritage, all residing within North-East Wales, to explore accounts relating to Black/White interracial marriage. Interview transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis and identified six overarching themes: Contact, Lack of Contact, Positive Views, Negative Views, Culture, and Colour-Blindness. Results indicated that the personal views of both Black and White participants towards the concept of intermarriage were mostly positive, though sources of societal opposition in the local area were also identified. Gradual increases in the racial diversity of the region were linked to greater levels of acceptance of people from racial minorities, though it was also noted that the social networks of both White and Black participants were relatively homogeneous, suggesting there are limited opportunities for contact to take place between the two groups. Cultural factors had considerable influence for Black participants and some accounts were provided relating to social exchange theory. Whilst the results cannot be generalised to the entire population of North-East Wales, or to the racial groups that participants came from, they provide rich detailed data on individual and societal views of Black/White interracial relationships in a region of the UK where studies of this type have been unprecedented

Understanding Problematic Drug Use: A Medical Matter or a Social Issue?
This paper questions the notion that problem drug use is essentially a physiological medical problem that requires coercive treatment, from which success are measured by way of drug testing to determine the abstinence from the drug. The article argues that the causes and solutions to problem drug use are much more to do with socio-economic factors than physiological or psychological factors. In particular it explores the connections between the emergence and sudden rise in problematic drug use that occurred across the UK in the mid 1980s, with deindustrialisation and the decline of opportunities for unskilled non academic young people. Further the paper critically examines the notion of the ‘problem drug user’, in particular how those identified and labelled, are perceived and treated by wider society, and how this adversely impacts upon drug rehabilitation and social integration
Using Web 2.0 Technologies to Build Learning Communities
Web 2.0 technologies, such as wiki pages, have the potential to facilitate the formation of on-line communities of learning, especially useful when participants in that community are geographically dispersed and living in remote areas. This paper describes the authors’ work with undergraduate health studies students tasked to work collaboratively on a problem-based learning (PBL) project in which the students use wiki pages to share ideas and resources. The study examines how different groups of students make use of the wiki facility in terms of the level and nature of contribution. Work to date suggests that students readily adapt to the on-line community and, given sufficient instruction, utilize the wiki pages to work together constructively. Evidence indicates that, provided tutors are supportive and provide encouragement, the level of wiki activity is independent of whether contributions are formally assessed or not, however, the language style adopted by students does change when their work is being assessed. When the contributions are not assessed, students adopt a very informal language, reminiscent of the language used in instant messaging and SMS texting; when the work is assessed, students revert to the more formal language of the traditional classroo
Web 2.0 Technologies for Problem-Based and Collaborative Learning – a Case Study
Collaborative problem-based learning (PBL) has a well established history within medical and health care education. Undergraduate nursing students at the Glyndŵr University undertake PBL to explore ethical issues of health care; traditionally these students meet in person to discuss scenarios, provided by tutors, and present the product of their deliberations to the rest of the class. The geographical dispersion of the students has meant that most discussions have been limited to those times when the students are physically on campus by virtue of their timetabled classes. By using Web 2.0 technologies, students are able to collaborate at distance, at a time that suits them. This chapter describes how students have used these emerging technologies to share ideas and resources to prepare for class presentations; described also are the underpinning theories that inform this work together with an analysis of student use and feedback

Comparison of the Curing Kinetics of a DGEBA/Acid Anhydride Epoxy Resin System Using Differential Scanning Calorimetry and a Microwave-Heated Calorimeter
The cure of an epoxy resin system, based upon a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) with HY917 (an acid anhydride hardener) and DY073 (an amine–phenol complex that acted as an accelerator), was investigated using a conventional differential scanning calorimeter and a microwave-heated power-compensated calorimeter. Dynamic cure of the epoxy resin using four different heating rates and isothermal cure using four different temperatures were carried out and the degree of cure and reaction rates were compared.
The cure kinetics were analyzed using several kinetics models. The results showed different activation energies for conventional and microwave curing and suggested different reaction mechanisms were responsible for curing using the two heating methods. Resins cured using conventional heating showed higher glass transition temperatures than did those cured using microwave heating
Dynamic Stereochemical Rearrangements in Chira Organometallic
Organometallic complexes have long been known to display a wide variety of dynamic stereochemical processes. Classic examples of such processes include the exchange of axial and equatorial environments in trigonal bipyramidal complexes, such as Fe(CO)₅, and the migration of the metal moiety round the periphery of the cyclopentadiene ring in η¹-bound Cp complexes. The systematic study of fluxional processes is of interest because it can not only help provide a detailed, quantitative ‘picture’ of the bonding between the metals and ligands involved, but it can also help to rationalise chemical reactivity patterns. The introduction of chirality into organometallic complexes, usually in the form of a non-racemic chiral ligand, has led to an explosion in the importance such species, particularly with regard to their applications in organic functional group transformations. The presence of a chiral centre can also provide an excellent spectroscopic handle on the complex in question, enabling both novel fluxional processes to be observed and new light to be shed on old (unresolved) problems. In this critical review (101 references) the literature on metal-centred fluxional rearrangements in chiral transition and main group organometallic complexes is reviewed, complementing the recent review by Faller (see reference )
