    Enabling dependent drug users: A cognitive behavioural assessment

    Based upon six years social work practice with dependent drug users in Mersey side, the author introduces the broad principles of a cognitive behavioural approach, and then integrates this theoretical understanding to a highly specific area of practice, - assessing dependent drug users. Assessment is discussed in detail and using examples the article provides a much needed model of good practice. The approach is based upon a risk reduction philosophy and is underpinned by cognitive behavioural principles. The article offers a comprehensive outline from which a practitioner could follow and conduct an assessment. Importantly, the process seeks to empower clients, redressing the balance by returning to them responsibility for their future, thus enabling them to set their own targets and plans without coercion from the worker

    Adsorption of Gum Arabic, Egg White Protein, and Their Mixtures at the Oil−Water Interface in Limonene Oil-in-Water Emulsions

    The adsorption behavior of gum Arabic, egg white protein, and their mixtures at the oil−water interface for 20% limonene oil emulsions has been investigated at pH 3.5 and 7.5. It has been shown that protein-rich fractions of gum Arabic adsorb onto limonene oil droplets and that there is no significant molecular mass dependence. The amount adsorbed was determined from differences in the intensities of the gel permeation chromatography elution profiles of the gum before and after preparing emulsions and was found to be 6.5 and 5 mg/m2 at pH 3.5 and 7.5, respectively. These values are greater than might be expected for monolayer coverage. The amount of protein associated with the gum Arabic adsorbed was about 0.25 mg/m2, which corresponds to 26% of the total protein present in the gum. In comparison, the amount of egg white protein adsorbed was found to be 1.2 and 0.8 mg/m2, respectively, at pH 3.5 and 7.5, which are typical values for monolayer coverage. For gum Arabic−egg white protein mixtures (1:0.05 w/w corresponding to 1:1 on a molar basis) at pH 7.5, both species are negatively charged, and there is no interaction between them. On formation of emulsions, they compete with each other for surface sites, and egg white protein molecules are adsorbed preferentially, although not exclusively. At pH 3.5, the molecules have opposite charge and interact and at this ratio form soluble electrostatic complexes, which are adsorbed at the interface during emulsification. The droplet size of emulsions prepared with gum Arabic was significantly less than for egg white protein over the concentration range studied. Gum Arabic−egg white protein mixtures (1: 0.05 w/w) at pH 3.5 produced emulsions with a droplet size similar to gum Arabic alone, while those prepared at pH 7.5 produced emulsions with a significantly larger droplet size

    This article presents a reflective account of a consultation in a pre-assessment clinic for women requesting abortion. The reflectionis based on Johns’ model. Reflection enabled the author to address important issues that the consultation raised. These included the realisation that nurses do not always have to understand why patients make the choices they do, and the importance of allocating sufficient time for sensitive consultations

    The chiral non-racemic O/N/O donor ligands 2-[(4R,5R)-4,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-2-yl]-6-[(4R,6R)-4,6-dimethyl-1,3-dioxan-2-yl]pyridine and 2-[(4R,5R)-4,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-2-deuteryl]-6-[(4R,6R)-4,6-dimethyl-1,3-dioxan-2-yl]pyridine were prepared in a stepwise fashion form 2,6-dibromopyridine. Reaction with the pentacarbonylhalogenorhenium(I) compounds yields the complexes [ReX(CO)3L], in which the ligands act in a N/O bidentate chelate fashion. There are eight possible diastereoisomers, three of which are observable in solution. DFT calculations indicate that the relative stability of the diastereoisomers is SR5>RR5>SS5≈RS5>RS6>SS6>RR6>SR6. Above ambient temperature, a dynamic process leads to the exchange of 2 of the 3 diastereoisomers: the free energy of activation is ca. 79 kJ mol−1. The results of the DFT calculations and the magnitude of ΔG‡ suggest the dynamic process to be the flip of the co-ordinated acetal ring. DFT calculations on the [ReX(CO)3] complexes of chiral non-racemic 2-(dioxolanyl)-6-(dioxanyl)pyridines, in which the ligands coordinate in a bidentate N/O fashion, indicate that binding of the five-membered dioxolanyl ring is strongly favoured over that of the six-membered dioxanyl ring. In solution 3 of the 8 possible diastereoisomers are observed, two of which undergo exchange above ambient temperature

    Polymer electrolytes based on modified natural rubber

    Modified natural rubber polymer hosts having low transition glass temperatures have been investigated for use in polymer electrolytes. Two types of modified natural rubber, namely 25% epoxidised natural rubber (ENR-25) and 50% epoxidised natural rubber (ENR-50) were employed in conjunction with poly(ethylene oxide), PEO. Results are reported for ionic conductivity and thermal properties for both unplasticized and plasticized polymer electrolyte systems with lithium triflate. The samples were in the form of free standing films with the thickness 0.2–0.5 mm and mixtures of ethylene carbonate (EC) and propylene carbonate (PC) were used as plasticizers. Unplasticized modified natural rubber-based systems exhibit ionic conductivities in the range 10−6 to 10−5 S cm−1 at ambient temperatures. Incorporating 100% of EC/PC by weight fraction of polymer (ENR/PEO) to the systems yielded mechanically stable films and ionic conductivities in the range of 10−4 S cm−1 at ambient temperature

    Optical losses of measured optical fibres (MOFs) with silver nanoparticle inclusions are measured when visible light is guided in the core. The high pressure chemical deposition technique used to deposit the metal offers good control of the particle sizes allowing for varying transmission properties. The low losses demonstrate the potential for the silver impregnated MOFs to be integrated with conventional optical fibre devices

    An argument for simple embedded ACL optimisation

    The difficulty of efficiently reordering the rules in an Access Control List is considered and the essential optimisation problem formulated. The complexity of exact and sophisticated heuristics is noted along with their unsuitability for real time implementation embedded in the hardware of the network device. A simple alternative is proposed, in which a very limited rule reordering is considered following the processing of each packet. Simulation results are given from a range of traffic types. The method is shown to achieve savings that make its use worthwhile for lists longer than a given number of rules. This number is dependent on traffic characteristics but generally around 25 for typical network conditions

    Computation of Electromagnetic Fields in Assemblages of Biological Cells Using a Modified Finite-Difference Time-Domain Scheme

    When modeling objects that are small compared with the wavelength, e.g., biological cells at radio frequencies, the standard finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method requires extremely small time-step sizes, which may lead to excessive computation times. The problem can be overcome by implementing a quasi-static approximate version of FDTD based on transferring the working frequency to a higher frequency and scaling back to the frequency of interest after the field has been computed. An approach to modeling and analysis of biological cells, incorporating a generic lumped-element membrane model, is presented here. Since the external medium of the biological cell is lossy material, a modified Berenger absorbing boundary condition is used to truncate the computation grid. Linear assemblages of cells are investigated and then Floquet periodic boundary conditions are imposed to imitate the effect of periodic replication of the assemblages. Thus, the analysis of a large structure of cells is made more computationally efficient than the modeling of the entire structure. The total fields of the simulated structures are shown to give reasonable and stable results at 900,1800, and 2450 MHz. This method will facilitate deeper investigation of the phenomena in the interaction between electromagnetic fields and biological systems
