Teaching Development – Experience and Philosophy (Using the Three 6. Rs)

    No full text
This article attempts to synthesize To create a whole or complete unit from parts or components. See synthesis. teachers' conceptions-of-teaching and integrate them into a structure for professional development. It presents one route by which a teacher might become more expert at the practice of teaching. Various conceptions-of-teaching theories are considered in the light of how they impact on the practice of teaching. How the conceptions influence and are linked with the progression from novice to expert as outlined by Drefus and Dreyfus in 1986 is discussed. The novice/ expert progression is overlaid with Haigh's three Rs methods for the promotion of professional development. Some methods for progression are suggested

Developing Communities of Inquiry: The Role of Narrative

    Get PDF
My aim in this paper is to examine the role of narrative in developing communities of inquiry. In particular, I shall refer to the teaching of philosophy in schools. Having made some introductory comments about the idea of a ‘community of inquiry’, I examine a well-known narrative approach which is used to support its development. Finally, I outline on one of my own narratives and offer some suggestions as to how it may be used with students undertaking initial teacher education and training (ITET) and other Education programmes, to promote communities of inquiry

Compact superconducting dual-log spiral resonator with high Q-factor and low power dependence

    Get PDF
A new dual-log spiral geometry is proposed for microstrip resonators, offering substantial advantages in performance and size reduction at subgigahertz frequencies when realized in superconducting materials. The spiral is logarithmic in line spacing and width such that the width of the spiral line increases smoothly with the increase of the current density, reaching its maximum where the current density is maximum (in its center for 2 resonators). Preliminary results of such a logarithmic ten-turn (2 5 turns) spiral, realized with double-sided YBCO thin film, showed a -factor seven times higher than that of a single ten-turn uniform spiral made of YBCO thin film and 64 times higher than a copper counterpart. The insertion loss of the YBCO dual log-spiral has a high degree of independence of the input power in comparison with a uniform Archimedian spiral, increasing by only 2.5% for a 30-dBm increase of the input power, compared with nearly 31% for the uniform spiral. A simple approximate method, developed for prediction of the resonant frequency of the new resonators, shows a good agreement with the test results

An Investigation into the Effect of Security on Performance in a VoIP Network

    Get PDF
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a communications technology that transmits voice over packet switched networks such as the Internet. VoIP has been widely adopted by home and business customers. When adding security to a VoIP system, the quality of service and performance of the system are at risk. This study has two main objectives, firstly it illustrates suitable methods to secure the signalling and voice traffic within a VoIP system, secondly it evaluates the performance of a VoIP system after implementing different security methods. This study is carried out on a pilot system using an asterisk based SIP (Session initiation Protocol) server (Asterisk, 2009). Since VoIP is intended for use over the Internet, VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) have been used in a tunnel configuration to provide the service. Additionally the performance of networks level IPSec (Internet Protocol Security) and application level ZRTP (Zimmerman Real Time Transport Protocol) security have been compared with no security. Registration, call setup and voice transmission packets have been captured and analysed. The results have then been extrapolated to the Internet

Performance Evaluation of The Split Transmission in Multihop Wireless Networks

    Get PDF
Multimedia applications in multihop wireless networks have great market potential. Multiple channels and multiple radios are commonly used for exploring multimedia transmissions in multihop wireless networks. Split transmission allows multiple channels attached to different radios simultaneously to be used, and so to achieve a fundamentally improved transmission capacity. The goal of this paper is to present a theoretical background to justify the improved performance of split transmission. We believe that this is the first attempt to consider split transmission in theory

Shaping attitude toward Christianity among year seven pupils: the influence of sex, church, home and primary school

    Get PDF
This study set out to examine the differences in attitude toward Christianity among year seven secondary school pupils who had undertaken their primary education either in a Church of England voluntary aided school or a non-denominational state-maintained school. Data were provided by 492 year-seven pupils attending three Church of England voluntary secondary schools and comparison is made between 288 pupils who had transferred from Anglican voluntary aided primary schools and 164 from non-denominational state-maintained schools. After taking into account the effects of sex, pupil church attendance, paternal church attendance, and maternal church attendance, the data found no effect from attending a Church of England voluntary aided primary school

The Scale Properties of the Adolescent Form of the Francis Psychological Type Scales (FPTSA) Among Canadian Baptist Youth

    Get PDF
A sample of 755 religiously committed young people between the ages of 12 and 18 attending Tidal Impact (a weeklong youth mission and service event sponsored by the Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches in Eastern Canada) completed a trial 80-item form of the Francis Psychological Type Scales designed for use among adolescents. These data were employed to refine four ten-item forced-choice scales to distinguish between preferences for the two orientations (extraversion and introversion), the two perceiving processes (sensing and intuition), the two judging processes (thinking and feeling) and the two attitudes (judging and perceiving). The scale properties of the new instrument commend the 40-item Adolescent form of the Francis Psychological Type Scales (FPTSA) for future use

Stereochemical rearrangements in tricarbonylrhenium(I) halide complexes of the non-racemic chiral ligand 2-[(4R),(5R)-dimethyl-1,3-dioxan-2-yl]pyridine (L): a dynamic NMR study

    Get PDF
Tricarbonylrhenium(I) halide complexes of the non-racemic chiral ligand 2-[(4R),(5R)-dimethyl-1,3-dioxan-2-yl]pyridine (L), namely fac-[ReX(CO)3L] (X = Cl, Br or I), have been prepared and their latent fluxionality studied by dynamic NMR techniques in the slow and intermediate exchange regimes. In solution, these complexes give rise to four diastereoisomers, depending on the configuration at the metal and at the acetal-carbon atom, respectively; the relative populations are in the order SR > RR >> RS > SS. At moderate temperatures, a reversible ‘acetal ring flip’ leads to formal inversion of configuration at the acetal-carbon atom; the free energies of activation are in the range 84 - 88 kJ mol-1 at 298 K. Above ca. 370 K, reversible ligand dissociation also occurs, leading to an exchange of all four diastereoisomers on the NMR chemical shift time-scale

The Easyline+ Project: Evaluation of a User Interface Developed to Enhance Independent Living of Elderly and Disabled people

    No full text
This paper reports the usability evaluation of interfaces developed to enable elderly and disabled people interact remotely with kitchen appliances in the home to enhance their independent living. A number of evaluation exercises were undertaken throughout the project’s development, including user-participative workshops and focus groups. This paper focuses on the summative usability evaluation exercise, which comprised a laboratory-based study in a simulated home environment, with a view to determining the appropriateness of employing this approach with potentially vulnerable participants. The study involved 27 participants interacting with the user interface. Their behaviour was observed and recorded, and their interaction with the system was analysed. They were also given a post-session questionnaire, where their opinions of the usability of the interface were solicited. The results of the usability testing were positive, and insight has been gained into how products of this nature can be further improved. The experience of conducting laboratory-based studies with vulnerable users was positive and led to propose in this paper a set of guidelines for future work in evaluating usability for work in this domain

Stigma, abortion and disclosure - findings from a qualitative study

    No full text
Introduction This study qualitatively explores perceptions of women who have experienced abortion care. It explores women’s journey through abortion from confirmation of pregnancy to post abortion. Aim The study seeks to understand the implications of these perceptions for policy and practice. Main Outcome Measures A qualitative study involving in-depth semi-structured interviews with seventeen women, aged between 22 and 57 years, who had undergone legal induced abortion in the UK when they were 16 years or older. Participants were not recruited under the age of 16, because of the ethical and legal complexities of interviewing minors, additionally 16 years was deemed to be the most appropriate age as this is the legal age of consent in the United Kingdom. Methods Participants were recruited from12 community contraception and sexual health clinics in two NHS trusts, one in England and one in Wales. Participant recruitment was set at a minimum of 12 and participants were recruited on a ‘first come first served basis’ (i.e. the first 12 who contacted the researcher) the number of participants was raised to seventeen as this was the number deemed to be the most suitable for data saturation in this particular qualitative research. Results Women in this study understood abortion as highly taboo and a potentially personally stigmatising event. These perceptions continued to affect disclosure to others, long after the abortion, and affected women’s perceptions of the response of others, including society in general, significant others and health professionals. Conclusions Women’s experiences of abortion may be influenced by perceived negative social attitudes. Health professionals and abortion service providers might combat the perceived isolation of women undergoing abortion by attending not only to clinical/technical aspects of the procedure but also to women’s psychological/emotional sensitivities surrounding the event
