No full textHeute können Künstler_innen die Distribution, Vermarktung und Selbstinszenierung über Social-Media-Plattformen selbst steuern. In den Fotos, Artworks und Musikvideos, die die Musiker_innen über diese Plattformen verbreiten, werden visuelle Darstellungsmuster und Gestaltungsstrategien der Selbst-und Geschlechterinszenierung sowie ästhetische Inspirationsquellen und Trends sichtbar. Die vorliegende Untersuchung nimmt explizit Musikerinnen in den Blick und geht deren Selbst- und Geschlechterinszenierungen nach. Es werden genreübergreifend Beispiele gezeigt und untersucht, wie diese Plattformen und Technologien dazu beitragen, visuelle Hierarchien und stereotype Geschlechterrollen zu verändern sowie Selbst- und Geschlechterdarstellungen jenseits der hetero-normativen Zweigeschlechtlichkeit zu entwerfen. Dabei werden verschiedene oppositionelle Designstrategien aufgezeigt, die entweder das Geschlecht verwischen, die Betrachter_innen provozieren oder stereotype Geschlechterdarstellungen überwinden. Get PDFIn Handlungen, Repräsentationen, Diskursen und Gefühlen zum Thema Muttermilchernährung aktualisieren sich gegenwärtig geschlechtliche Responsibilisierungsmomente, die mit Ein- und Ausschlüssen für Frauen als Mütter einhergehen. Damit flankieren sie auch die Frage nach (un)gleichen Geschlechterverhältnissen. Im Gegensatz zum englischsprachigen Raum ist die sozialwissenschaftliche Forschung zur Säuglingsernährung und zum Stillen in Deutschland noch wenig entwickelt. Dies gilt vor allem für qualitativ-praxisanalytische Untersuchungen. Diese Leerstelle nimmt der Beitrag aus einer genderpolitischen und ethnografischen Perspektive in den Blick und analysiert exemplarisch die sozialen Praktiken der professionellen Stillförderung auf einer Geburtshilfestation. Gefragt wird, wie der Körper der Mutter in diesen Settings bearbeitet und als Nährquelle für das Baby funktionsfähig gemacht wird. Die Ergebnisse verdeutlichen, dass das Stillen in der Praxis als problemanfälliger Lerngegenstand konzipiert ist, der ein Arsenal an Hilfen und Problemlösungstechniken aktiviert, die den Mutterkörper reduzieren, fragmentieren und funktionalisieren sowie gleichzeitig als unersetzbar für das kindliche Gedeihen exponieren
Rainbows of Resistance : LGBTQ Pride Parades Contesting Space in Post-Conflict Belfast
Get PDFThe article seeks to demonstrate how marchers in the annual LGBTQ Pride Parade strategically contest and reclaim heteronormative public spaces in Belfast, Northern Ireland. There is an exploration of participants adapting transnational symbolic representations and discourses to the distinct national-local cultural milieu in which they are scripted and performed. The discursive frames, symbols, and performances of Belfast Pride are compared to those of sectarian parades in the city. The subaltern spatial performances and symbolic representations of Belfast Pride are depicted as confronting a universalized set of heteronormative discourses involving sexuality and gender identity, while at the same time contesting a particularized set of dominant local-national discourses related to both ethnonational sectarianism and religious fundamentalism in Northern Ireland
The rainbow flag as friction : transnational imagined communities of belonging among Pakistani LGBTQ activists
Get PDFThis article analyzes the frictions the rainbow flag creates between transnational, national and translocal discourses and materialities. It focuses on the ambivalent role that the transnational ‘rainbow’ space plays for community building for LGBTQ activists in in Pakistan. The rainbow flag can function as a way to mobilize an imagined transnational community of belonging, enabling people to politicize their experiences of discrimination as a demand of recognition directed at the state. But it can also enable homonationalism and transnational middle class formations that exclude groups of people, for example illiterates and people perceived of as traditional, such as Khwaja Siras. The article is based on auto-ethnographic reflections on encounters with activists in Pakistan, and critically discusses the problem of feeling ‘too comfortable’, as white, Western, middle-class researchers, exploring ‘imperial narratives’ dominating the feminist and LGBTQ activist transnational imagined community of belonging. It argues for the importance of recognizing the transnational space as a space in its own right, with different positions, communities and conflicts stretching around the globe
Open-source cyborgs and DIY data: Chances and challenges for a democratisation of gender
No full textThis article draws a picture of the ontological politics that is currently at play in the relationship between people and things from the perspective of “what we design designs us back”. Drawing on an array of phenomena, we illustrate how the current discourse on the design of technologies produces objects-as-subjects and subjects-as-objects, and we explore the implicit production of gendered dualisms within this process. The article goes on to discuss whether and how the DIY disruption of mundane technological systems can interrupt this active production of tacit gendering. Illustrated by design experiments involving “hacking culture” as technically intelligible social disruptions of everyday systems, the article then discusses the option of “confusing the apparatus”. It is argued that the sharing and analysis of data should not be seen as something objective and automated, but rather as something subjective and manipulable. Finally, we argue the potential of our evolution into open-source cyborgs – and hence, the prospective of taking an active part in the designing of one’s own body and mind through a constant DIY reshuffling and reinterpretation of the material-social

No full textThe Franco dictatorship in Spain exalted normative gender roles as part of its propaganda machine and thereby deepened women’s exclusive role as wife and mother. The poetess Gloria Fuertes (1918-1998), mystified as a sort of “national mother”, is well known for her children’s literature in Spain, whereas her poetic work for adults – full of rebellion against the lack of freedom and restrictive gender roles – has been fairly discussed. By means of parody, irony and language games, she demystifies and deconstructs the social imperative of motherhood, creates alternative spaces for different models of womanhood and claims her literary agency by appropriation and reinterpretation of stereotypical images
