Get PDFWarum gucken Frauen Chick Flicks? Wenn Melodramen traurig machen, Thriller für Spannung sorgen und Horrorfilme für Angst und Schrecken, welche Schaulust geht dann mit Chick Flicks einher? Was ist der Reiz an Filmen wie „Legally Blonde“ oder „Miss Congeniality“ - Filme, die ausgesprochen schrill und pink sind? Aufgrund der erfolgreichen Protagonistinnen heißt es, Chick Flicks („chick“, Englisch für „Küken“ oder „Tussi“, „flick" Englisch für „Film") sprächen insbesondere Frauen an. Produzieren Chick Flicks also eine weibliche Filmerfahrung? In dem Buch „Chick Flicks. Film, Feminismus und Erfahrung“ erklärt die Filmwissenschaftlerin Sarah-Mai Dang, warum Chick Flicks so erfolgreich sind. Das Genre ist zeitgleich mit dem sogenannten Postfeminismus Mitte der 1990er Jahre entstanden und hat für heftige Diskussionen unter feministischen Medienwissenschaftlerinnen gesorgt. Angesichts der stereotypen Inszenierung von Frauen (High Heels, Minirock und Bikini) wird Chick Flicks einerseits vorgeworfen, antifeministisch und reaktionär zu sein. Andererseits gelten die Filme als ‚frauenfreundlich‘, da sie starke Protagonistinnen präsentieren, die über „agency“, Handlungsmacht, und „choice“, Wahlfreiheit verfügen. Diese gegensätzlichen Wahrnehmungen und politischen Debatten sind Ausgangspunkt dieser Studie, in der die Autorin Chick Flicks als popkulturelles Phänomen untersucht. Anstatt das Genre als gut oder schlecht zu bewerten, geht Sarah-Mai Dang der Frage nach, was Chick Flicks überhaupt sind und warum sie so gerne gesehen werden

No full textThis article argues that early modern political thinkers did not think about "success“ and "failure“ in modern terms of material well-being or as results of individual action and self-actualisation. Focusing on the thought of Niccolò Machiavelli and Jean Bodin, two key thinkers of the early modern period, the article shows that two aspects were central to early modern thinkers but that tend to be disregarded in modern debates. Early modern thinkers put considerably more emphasis on the role of fortune, the unruly force which controling human actions, human success and human failure. And they emphasised the central role of the common good as the benchmark against which success needed to be measured

Who Gets to Know about Nature? Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services through an Intersectional Lens
Get PDFIntersectionality originates in feminist critical theory as a perspective for analyzing categories of difference and relations of power. In this article we explore how the categories of ’human’ and ’nature’ are made meaningful in relation to each other and assemble an intersectional analytical lens drawing on theories from the fields of ecofeminism, critical animal studies and posthumanism. A common theme in these fields is the dualistic construction and representation of humans and nature as separate entities and we study how such dualism plays out in relation to issues of knowledge and subjectivity. The analytical lens is engaged to explore the concepts of biodiversity and eco-system services, which have emerged as keywords for conceptualizing human-nature relations in environmental research and policy. We assess debates around the concepts of biodiversity and eco-system services in scholarly publications, and how these reflect, reinforce, or contest dualistic and hierarchical constructions of human-nature relations. We look for principal tendencies, as well as challenging perspectives and voices

No full textThe following essay takes as its starting point the observation that colonial/racist imagery, sounds, figures and metaphors can be found in many 1950s West-German films. Referring to the Freudian notion of screen memories, which can be understood as memories of a past that were never present, the essay asks how these filmic actualizations of africanist tropes established a vision of an unburdened past. By looking at three films the essay shows that actualizations of africanist – racist – imagery are key; not only for the transcription of the Nazi as well as the colonial past, but also for establishing a memory that allows for the construction of a self-image as re-covered and therefore no longer racist
