    Economic Assessment of Microfinance in Women Empowerment in Bangladesh and Some Unsolved Judgments

    This article provides a quantitative outcome evaluation of microfinance in women empowerment in Bangladesh. It first evaluated the economic assessment of microfinance which showed the positive outcome of the economic indicators. At the same time, it also underlines some persisting unresolved methodical issues as well as economic issues. This analysis reflects the economic significance along with limitations of the microfinance program in Bangladesh since its beginning in the 1980s, and it will make comfortable for the further critical analysis of the contribution of the microfinance in women empowerment in Bangladesh

    Strategic Positioning for an International Tourism Destination: A Strategic Analysis on St. Martin’s Island-Bangladesh

    Purpose: This study explores a case on St. Martin’s Island-Bangladesh, an international tourism destination and analyzes the strategic positioning perspective based on research/case questions followed by some suggestions to execute the strategic positioning to improve the tourism destination in the south Asian regions. Design/methodology/approach: This study conducts questionnaire (developed by 5–Point Likert Scale) sample survey on 32 international tourists from different countries of South Asia, South East Asia, Central Asia and African zones of the world. Some approaches and strategic management models like External Factor Analysis Summary (EFAS Table) and Strategic Factor Analysis Summary (SFAS) Matrix, PEST analysis framework, Porter’s Five Forces Model, Positioning Triangle model have been used. Online data sources like google and google scholar database, Banglapedia and Wikipedia have also been used. Findings: This study finds that St. Martin’s Island-Bangladesh is a tourism destination at lower traveling cost and this is the best destination for honeymoon in the blue sea water in the location of third world country like Bangladesh. The slogan is “Drive to the destination (D2D) with heavenly experience,” and the mission of this tourism destination is “to enjoy relaxed marine life at lower traveling cost socially and naturally.” Research limitations/implications: The study suffers from smaller sample size from the fewer number of countries. Social implications: This study motivates local people to learn about how to render tourism services as tour guides. Originality/value: The findings and some general recommendations have implications for the researchers in strategy analysis and the top position holders and decision makers as practitioners in the tourism sector

    The Effect of Strategic Orientation on Green Supply Chain Practices and Performance: A Case of Manufacturing Companies in Pakistan

    The aim of this study is to find out the direct impact of competence of strategic supply chain orientation, strategic environmental orientation and institutional pressure on Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) and to overall performance. The data gathered from executives of 66 manufacturing firms of Pakistan. On the one hand, the relationship between strategic orientations of the environment, supply chain, institutional pressure, and adoption of GSCM practices is examined on the other hand GSCM practices, and its relationship with performance measures including Customer Effectiveness, Environmental Differentiation, Economic Performance, Operational Efficiency and Social Performance is examined. The Smart PLS software is used to compute content validity, convergent validity, discriminant validity, and predictive relevance model. The companies in Pakistan are less oriented towards environment and supply chain. However, due to the pressure from institutes, they are persuaded to adopt GSCM practices in their operations, which eventually boost their performance. The outcome of GSCM practices results in saving the environment, creating a better social image, cost reduction and profitability which would enable managers to be able to know strategic orientations (both environmental and SCM) rather than depending on the issues of institutional pressures and monitoring directions of strategies for Green SCM

    Supply Chain Management in Readymade Garments Industry, Bangladesh

    The export-oriented readymade garment (RMG) industry has some distinctive features, which differentiate it from other businesses. Wage, Supply chain, Time-frame, and Compliances are among the most important features of this business. Each of four features is interrelated and interdependent. Among the features, effective Supply Chain Management (SCM) is the core. Whatever the wage level or lead time (the period from order confirmation to shipment) without proper management of supply chain business is not viable and sustainable. Supply chain can categories into two phases – Macro level, part of global supply chain and Micro level, the supply chain system within the manufacturing unit. In supply chain system, it can be materials, it can be information, and even it can be a supply of business (continuation of business). One single and very simple issue like mismatching thread count or wrong button line, incorrect or delayed information can make the whole process jeopardies. Considering the importance, present study has been carried out on supply chain system in Bangladesh RMG industry. The study revealed the difficulties in supply chain system and also tried to set some guidelines to improve the system for the sustainable development of the sector

    Micro Credit as a Poverty Alleviation Tool in Turkey: A Case Study Analysis of Turkish Grameen Micro Credit Project

    Turkish Grameen Micro-credit Project (TGMP) follows Grameen Generalized System (GGS) which is designed to create new possibilities for a Grameen Bank Bangladesh(GBB) replication program  by offering a simple and beneficial micro credit for improving poverty status of women in Turkey. Although GBB is known worldwide for its success in providing tiny credit without collateral to the poor women specially, still there have some controversy and questions about the methods and applications of the replication programs implemented in different parts of the world. The main objective of this study is to find the success of TGMP by evaluating some important factors related to the success of GBB replication program. By evaluating the program success of TGMP in eradicating extreme poverty, and improving the status of members\u27 socio-economic life, this study concludes that it is quite successful till recent year as the GBB replication program specially in yearly performance, financial viability status, and loan performances of the members. Although TGMP has been proved successful in Turkey since 2003, it is recommended that necessary steps should be taken for its long-run success as a replication program of GBB with special concerns about financial sustainability, increase of growth oriented activities instead of home based loan activities and lending rate enhancement.  JEL classification: G21, O16, L3

    Impacts of Foreign Direct Investment on Economic Growth of Bangladesh: An Econometric Exercise

    Economic Growth is a concerning issue for the development of Bangladesh. Foreign direct investment (FDI) is a potential weapon for economic development, especially for Bangladesh. It can help us to build up physical capital, decrease unemployment rate, increase production capacity and create a good economic relationship between the domestic economies with global economy. This study examines the impacts of foreign direct investment on economic growth in Bangladesh during the period of 1990-2015 using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) method. The findings of the study reveal that FDI has its negative sign, which indicates that there is an inverse relationship between FDI and economic growth. The negative sign of FDI supports that Bangladesh should attract FDI increasing human capital, creating a good political environment and enhancing adequate infrastructure facilities, which will improve our economic growth

    Impact of Corporate Governance Mechanisms on Firm’s Performance: A Study on Listed Conventional Banks

    This study examines the impact of corporate governance mechanisms on firm’s performance on listed conventional banking companies at Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE). Based on existing empirical studies, five key attributes of corporate governance (board size, the proportion of independent directors on board, the proportion of female directors on board, institutional ownership and size of audit committee) have been selected to identify their influence on firm’s financial performance. Tobin’s Q (a market-based performance measure) and Return on Asset- ROA (an accounting based performance measure) consider as financial performance measures. Using OLS as a method of estimation, the results provide evidence of a significant negative relationship between the performance of the firm and the proportion of independent directors on board as well as size of the audit committee. The result also provides evidence of a significant negative relationship between Tobin’s Q and institutional ownership but a positive and insignificant between ROA and institutional ownership. Furthermore, there is a negative relationship between the proportion of female directors in board and the performance of the firm but is not significant. Board size as predictor variable is negative and insignificant with Tobin’s Q.  JEL Classifications: G 21, G 3

    Sustainability of a Social Business: A Case Study on Grameen Danone Foods Limited

    Achieving sustainability in the context of economic, social and environmental aspects has been one of the main focuses of modern times. The aim is to create the world that will facilitate the upcoming generations to lead a safe and sound life. Social business is a relatively new concept that assists in the creation of such a sustainable world by promoting and following the notion of “no-loss, no-dividend” business instead of conventional profit-maximizing business. The purpose of this paper is to show whether a social business can become a sustainable business and achieve the sustainable development goals set by United Nations. To scrutinize this theory of social business for sustainable development the author has selected Grameen-Danone Foods Limited (GDFL) as a case study. The endeavor of this paper is to elaborate the relationship between social business and sustainable development, describe GDFL as a social business and analyze the success (or failure) of GDFL as a sustainable social business.     The Impact of Human Resource Development (HRD) Practices on Organizational Effectiveness: A Review

    This paper attempted to review theoretically the HRD and its matrix and revealed to show the positive relationship between HRD and organizational effectiveness. In HRD shows the different variables (outcomes) such as HRD instruments, HRD processes & climate variables and organizational dimensions. HRD affects the organizational goals which may result from higher productivity, cost reduction, more profits, better image and more satisfied customers and stake holders considered as organization dimensions HRD activities, as such, do not reduce costs, improve quality or quantity, or benefit the enterprise in any way. It is the on-the- job applications of learning that ultimately can reduce costs, improve quality, and so forth. In the organizational context, therefore, HRD means a process which helps employees of an organization to improve their functional capabilities for their present and future roles, to develop their general capabilities, to harness their inner potentialities both for their self and organizational development and, to develop organizational culture to sustain harmonious superior-subordinate relationships, teamwork, motivation, quality and a sense of belongingness. The study also analyses the Kliman Model of HRM to show the path of mechanisms which could lead to competitive advantage. Today’s fast changing environment modern organizations are more careful to sustain in the competitive advantage relating to HRD our study has been developed to help the management students, academicians, and professionals to understand the subject properly and enhance their knowledge about HRD network within the organization for its effectiveness
