    The temporal evolution of UFPs, HCHO, HONO and changes in atmospheric composition in the southeast of UK

    This study investigates the temporal evolution of ultrafine particles (UFPs, Dp < 100 nm), sub-micron particles (100 < Dp < 800 nm), and reactive gases including formaldehyde (HCHO) and nitrous acid (HONO) in southeast UK urban air. Data were collected at the Brighton Atmospheric Observatory (BAO) from July 2015 to June 2023 using high-resolution instrumentation, including scanning mobility particle sizers and condensation particle counters, alongside gas analysers and meteorological sensors. UFP number concentrations displayed distinct seasonal and diurnal patterns, with smaller particles (20–70 nm) influenced by local emissions and larger ones (70–800 nm) showing evidence of regional transport. Strong correlations (e.g., R² = 0.79 between N30_50 and N50_70) indicate sequential growth likely driven by coagulation and shared sources. HCHO peaked around midday during summer due to enhanced photochemistry, while HONO levels were higher in colder months, likely due to reduced dispersion and surface-mediated formation. Polar plot analysis revealed direction-specific pollutant enhancements, with elevated levels of NO₂, SO₂, HCHO, and HONO associated with distinct wind sectors, suggesting both local and transported source contributions. These patterns underscore the interplay between emissions, atmospheric processing, and meteorological factors. Hence, the study provides new insights into UFP behaviour and secondary pollutant dynamics in an urban coastal setting. The findings highlight the need for seasonally adaptive air quality strategies and contribute valuable evidence to support public health and regulatory decision-making

    Analytical and Finite Element Modeling for Time-Dependent Deflection of Ultra-High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Beam

    Ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) has emerged as an advanced concrete technology in the sustainable building industry. It can provide better infrastructural development in terms of strength, ductility, toughness, and stiffness than traditional concrete. This paper aims to analytically determine the time-dependent deflection (i.e., creep) of the UHPFRC beam with varying amounts of steel fiber addition. The age-adjusted effective modulus method was used to anticipate the time-dependent deflection of the UHPFRC beam. Experimental data related to time-dependent properties of UHPFRC were extracted from the literature to develop new formulas for creep coefficient and shrinkage strain through curve fitting and data validation. A new range of aging coefficient was proposed for UHPFRC through trial according to the ACI code. The existing shrinkage-induced curvature formula for cracked sections was modified using data validation. The analytical study incorporated all the proposed formulations and coefficient values to anticipate the UHPFRC beam's time-dependent deflection theoretically. Along with the analytic analysis, Finite Element Method (FEM) was also employed to predict the time-dependent deflection of the UHPFRC beam. It was found that for different percentages of steel fibers, both the FEM and the proposed analytical approaches conservatively estimate the deflection values, with an average deviation of around 20% from the experimental results. The accuracy and validation of the proposed theoretical formulation to predict the time-dependent deflection of UHPFRC beams were also demonstrated through statistical analysis

    Focusing on four themes: the nature and experience of materiality; the social effect of material culture; design, material culture and mediation; and the biography of a design, the edited volume undertakes a material culture approach to studying design in Asian contexts, with an aim to examine the ways in which design as a material form has underscored cultural and social changes in those places. The chapters study the ways that designed objects embody or initialize these changes, examining the biographies of design and materials as well as the experiences of the makers and the users who are witness to those changes. The authors focus on examples of architecture, ceramics, electronics items, fashion, furniture, found objects, interior design, magazines, ornaments, and sacred objects from China, Hong Kong, India, Japan and South Korea to explore the social, cultural and economic resonances and agencies of objects. Some of the themes and concepts examined by the authors include: the tensions between the local and the global, materialization, hybridity, cultural authenticity, modernity, gender identity, human-spatial interaction, and upcycling, to examine the material agencies of designed objects in culture and their roles beyond commodities

    Identity resilience, attachment style and life satisfaction in heterosexual and gay men:The mediating effect of body image concerns

    There is limited insight into the social psychological underpinnings of life satisfaction in heterosexual and gay men. This study examines the roles of sexual orientation, identity resilience, attachment style and body image concerns. Cross-sectional correlational survey data from 427 men in the United Kingdom and Germany, analysed using structural equation modelling, showed that the trait variables of identity resilience and anxious attachment style had direct effects on life satisfaction and indirect effects through the mediation of body image concerns. Sexual orientation had only an indirect effect on life satisfaction through the mediation of body image concerns. Higher identity resilience may operate as a protective factor against, and anxious attachment style as a risk factor for, body image concerns which in turn are associated with life satisfaction. Gay men may be at higher risk of decreased life satisfaction through their higher likelihood of experiencing body image concerns. Psychotherapeutic interventions that support the development of identity resilience while addressing insecure attachment may prevent body image concerns, thereby enhancing life satisfaction
