    Education in Bibliometrics: upskilling practitioners for a data-driven future

    Bibliometrics professionals are crucial in universities and research institutions, supporting research analytics, evaluation, and strategic decisions. Despite their importance, many lack formal training or access to professional networks, often relying on self-taught methods that can lead to the misuse of metrics and indicators. This limits the usefulness of bibliometric data and raises concerns about research integrity, particularly in citation practices. A global survey within the Library and Information Science (LIS) community explored training experiences, gaps, and interests, especially around research integrity. The results revealed critical knowledge gaps, including the need for a deeper understanding of bibliometric principles, responsible metrics use, advanced analysis techniques, and awareness of indicators' limitations and biases. Highlighting these deficiencies aims to engage the STI indicators community, prompting collective action to better equip bibliometrics practitioners. Proper training is essential to prevent the misuse of indicators, which can undermine research quality and academic evaluation.This presentation is part of the ongoing research projects: Competencies Model for Bibliometrics and Assessing Training Needs in the Global Bibliometrics Community

    How do extreme events shape institutions and public organizations while responding to a common public threat? The unprecedented impact of COVID-19 brought renewed attention to the role of the World Health Organization (WHO), particularly when it announced its intention to modernize its governing structure before all member states. WHO’s move sparked debates about institutional sovereignty, preparedness, and the frameworks that govern formal and informal collaborative obligations. This research examines institutional reactions within the UK Parliament, where growing scepticism emerged regarding the necessity and broader implications of this seemingly benign structural reform. A textual analysis reveals that institutional attempts to extend control are often met with suspicion perceived as potential gateways for broader institutional influence. In advancing a theory of the in-between institutional response-state shaped by overlapping pressures this study introduces the concept of institutional numbness. We argue that such a response-state serves as a mechanism for reconciling moral imperatives with the pragmatic and constitutional demands necessary for maintaining institutional stability. Furthermore, the study suggests that public health challenges acquire power to redefine relationships between public organizations and institutions. This occurs through the negotiation of competing interests where the need for conformity is framed as a normative imperative, encouraging a homogenized collective response. However, institutional efforts to achieve such homogeneity are themselves met with scepticism, as they may be perceived as covert mechanisms for consolidating and extending institutional control

    Digital Rebranding and Quotidian Self-Reinvention:Wellness Influencer-Healers’ Negotiations of Authenticity and Tellability Crises on Instagram

    This paper examines practices of digital rebranding, characterised as the strategic overhaul and staged revitalization of one’s digital persona, within wellness influencer cultures on Instagram. Processes of rebranding, which are communicatively afforded by and performatively augmented through platform tools, features and semiotic resources, introduce a narrative disjuncture that requires delicate rhetorical management of self-historicity in relation to neoteric self-presentation practices in order to preserve impressions of authenticity. Drawing on data collected during a longitudinal blended digital ethnographic study, including screen-based participant observations, social media content extraction and oral interviews, I explore the ways in which female wellness influencer-healers discursively (re)negotiate their self-positioning in connection to their current and past digital brands and, relationally, their (imagined) audiences. I suggest that rebranding practices are narratively structured by and, in turn, enact authenticity through discourses of ‘personal growth’ and ‘pedagogical self reflection,’ thereby constructing self-presentational shifts as emergent and organic evolutions in one’s online presence. The paper further argues that digital rebranding manifests from compounded crises of authenticity and tellability, compelling users to continuously recalibrate their online personas in alignment with evolving platform norms and audience expectations. The analysis therefore foregrounds the paradoxical struggle of maintaining a stable personal brand whilst adapting to the dynamic nature of social media

    Asymmetrical morphological evolution and energy conversion of droplets impacting on the moving film

    Droplet impacting on the film has been an important research topic, which is relevant to many important industries and is of high utilization value. The droplet impacting process shows excellent mass and heat transfer capability, whereas the liquid film is often in a flowing state, the morphological deformation and energy conversion of successive droplets impacting a moving liquid film were investigated. A threedimensional volume of fluid model coupled with level-set function was established to investigate the single and successive droplet impact on the moving film. The asymmetry dynamic and energy dissipation and in the morphological evolution of the simultaneous single and successive droplet impacting processes under different droplet Weber numbers Wed and film Reynolds numbers Ref were thoroughly investigated. With smaller Wed and larger Ref , the liquid sheet downstream of the crown is more suppressed and the asymmetry of the crown is more significant. When Ref is constant, the dimensionless radius of the crown is related to the Wed 0:2 and also to the power of dimensionless time, with the exponents differing between the upstream and downstream. The relationship of energy dissipation with dimensionless number was discussed, in which the kinetic energy Ek reduction accounts for a major part of the dissipation even though the surface energy Es increases due to the formation of the crown. Additionally, the upstream liquid sheets merging of the inner and outer crowns due to successive droplets continuous impacting on the moving film were also observed. With larger Ref and lower impingement frequency, the merging of the upstream liquid sheets is earlier

    When the wild things are: Defining mammalian diel activity and plasticity

    Circadian rhythms are a mechanism by which species adapt to environmental variability and fundamental to understanding species behavior. However, we lack data and a standardized framework to accurately assess and compare temporal activity for species during rapid ecological change. Through a global network representing 38 countries, we leveraged 8.9 million mammalian observations to create a library of 14,587 standardized diel activity estimates for 445 species. We found that less than half the species' estimates were in agreement with diel classifications from the reference literature and that species commonly used more than one diel classification. Species diel activity was highly plastic when exposed to anthropogenic change. Furthermore, body size and distributional extent were strongly associated with whether a species is diurnal or nocturnal. Our findings provide essential knowledge of species behavior in an era of rapid global change and suggest the need for a new, quantitative framework that defines diel activity logically and consistently while capturing species plasticity.</p
