This thesis challenges the traditional view that scientific models derive their epistemic value from representational accuracy. I argue instead that models should be evaluated by their practical utility—specifically, their effectiveness in addressing the scientific questions that drive their construction. Through a critical analysis of representationalism, artifactualism, and complementary constructivism, I develop a normative framework that foregrounds the scientist’s creative engagement and underscores the role of idealisation in model construction. This approach shifts the focus from mirroring reality to approaching models as purpose-driven epistemic tools. By doing so, the thesis not only reconciles philosophical theory with scientific practice but also provides a more robust account of how models generate knowledge. Ultimately, this normative reorientation opens new avenues for integrated ontological and methodological analyses of scientific modeling
Perceptions, knowledge and guidelines developed by health professionals in the post-epidemic context of the Zika virus : [Percepções, conhecimentos e orientações desenvolvidas por profissionais de saúde no contexto pós-epidemia do vírus Zika][Percepciones, conocimientos y orientaciones desarrollados por profesionales de salud en el contexto post-epidemia del virus Zika]
Health professionals are a fundamental category to guide the population about various health problems and effective prevention measures. Despite this, so far, no studies have been identified in Brazil that analyze knowledge and guidance given about the zika virus by health professionals. The objective was to understand the perceptions, knowledge and guidelines developed by health professionals in Salvador-Bahia about the zika virus in the post-epidemic context. This is a qualitative study, developed through 13 semi-structured interviews. The data showed that health professionals had the perception of not being adequately prepared, even in the post-epidemic, to face the zika virus. Situation evidenced by insufficiencies in knowledge about important aspects of this arbovirus. Furthermore, guidelines in the course of the epidemic made the population responsible for mitigating the risk of infection, restricting themselves to the reproduction of the speeches of health authorities, disregarding socio-environmental vulnerabilities. In addition to professional training and appropriate health recommendations, it is necessary that the social determinants that provide different levels of susceptibility to illness are effectively transformed
Project Gungner : A proactive architectural proposal for navigating and guiding a shifting professional landscape
Over the last five years, we have witnessed the exponentially accelerating development and implementation of artificial intelligence. With capitalism and privatization at the core of this agenda, it is now more important than ever to consider how the majority of society will be affected by the new reality. As a subsequent result of the adoption of this technology comes the increasingly pressing issue of professional displacement. Many industries are undergoing fundamental transformations, streamlining and restructuring operations to remove what are perceived as outdated components. Unfortunately, more and more often, the element identified as expendable is the human one. While this evolution may appear ominous, it also presents opportunities. Western societies are projected to see a net increase in job availability over the coming decade, largely driven by fields associated with AI and Big Data. The paradox we now face, however, is the widespread lack of relevant education and experience within the existing workforce. This thesis explores how architecture can function as a tool to bridge the gap between technological acceleration and societal adaptation. The adjacent design proposal investigates a modular building system with a hybrid program—merging a data center with a re- and upskilling center—as a potential starting point for shifting the discourse. By reimagining the data center as a civic typology, the design seeks to humanize an otherwise pragmatic and capital-driven architecture, and in doing so, open new pathways through which we might collectively embrace the future
Empirical parametric model for venus plasma boundaries based on venus express data
Venus’s induced magnetosphere is characterized by regions with different plasma and magnetic field properties, which are separated by plasma boundaries. These boundaries’ locations and shapes vary with upstream solar wind conditions, and these variations have been characterized by several previous studies. In this study, we developed quantitative parametric models of the bow shock and ion composition boundary (ICB), which allow us to determine the location and shape of the boundaries given a set of upstream conditions. To quantitatively model these boundaries, we used a database of boundary crossings derived from plasma and magnetic field measurements by Venus Express. We modeled the bow shock as a conic section curve, which depends on the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) magnitude and the solar wind proton flux. Furthermore, we considered the shock normal angle, the angle between the IMF and the local shock normal vector, to describe a quasi-perpendicular/quasi-parallel shock asymmetry. We modeled the dayside ICB as a half sphere that depends solely on the solar EUV flux and the solar wind proton flux. These parametric models are compared with models that average over upstream conditions; our bow shock parametric model improves the prediction accuracy by 16% and the ICB parametric model by 6%
Air quality in a Swedish municipality : A study of compliance with EU-directive and seasonal variation in Skellefteå
Particles and nitrogen dioxide are two common air pollutants that can cause damage to the heart, blood vessels and lungs. The EU has developed a new Directive 2024/2881, to improve air quality in Europe. Sweden is one of the countries with the lowest air pollution in Europe. Despite this, achieving compliance with the new directive will be a challenge for Sweden. The purpose of this study was to investigate compliance with Directive 2024/2881 and identify factors that affect air quality. The requirements in the directive were compared with data of particles and nitrogen dioxide from year 2020-2024 in Skellefteå, Sweden. Variations in emissions over the year as well as correlation between emissions, traffic and population were studied. The results showed that parts of the directive for particles and nitrogen dioxide exceeded. Correlations between emissions, traffic and population were not significant. If Swedish cities exceed the directive after it has been implemented in national legislation, additional measures and more measuring stations will be required. Elevated particles were common during spring, with the use of studded tires being one contributing factor. Furthermore, as cities grow, they need to expand, often through urban densification. However, air quality is affected by the design of cities and should be taken into account during urban planning
Assessing Eco-Efficiency in Swedish Agriculture : Application of Stochastic Frontier Analysis
This thesis investigates the eco-efficiency of Swedish agriculture using a Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) framework with farm-level panel data from 2004 to 2022. Six distinct farm types (field crop, horticulture, milk, grazing livestock, granivores, and mixed farming) are analysed using inputs such as land, labour, capital, and fertilizers, with capital and fertilizer expenditure serving as proxies for environmental pressure. Results show that Swedish farms operate at an average of 84% eco-efficiency, suggesting notable scope for improvement. Granivore and mixed farms demonstrate the highest eco-efficiency overall, while grazing livestock and horticulture farms lag behind. Over time, eco-efficiency has generally improved, with a significant rebound after the 2009 economic downturn, reflecting policy reform impacts and sectoral resilience. Policy recommendations include supporting low-performing sectors with tailored interventions and enhancing precision agriculture. Despite data limitations, the findings offer valuable insights for improving the sustainability of agricultural practices in Swede
Road construction with XPS, cellular glass, and crushed rock : An analysis of environmental impact, cost, and work environment
This thesis examines three different road construction solutions with a focus on ground insulation and fill materials: XPS foam, cellular glass (foam glass), and crushed rock. The aim is to compare these alternatives from three main perspectives: environmental impact, cost, and work environment. The study is based on a case study involving the construction of a small road (10 x 5 meters) in Kramfors Municipality. The road is designed for light traffic (BK1, ÅDT 250–500) and requires frost protection down to a depth of 1.95 meters. To achieve the objective, life cycle assessments (LCA) have been conducted using environmental product declarations (EPDs), along with cost calculations. The results reveal clear differences between the three options. For climate impact, two sets of results are presented due to the absence of life cycle stages B–D in the EPD for cellular glass. Result 1 includes stages A1–A3, while Result 2 covers the full life cycle, A–D. Foam glass shows the lowest climate impact at 250 kg CO₂-equivalents per functional unit, largely due to the use of recycled glass. XPS, being a fossil-based and energy-intensive material, has the highest climate impact at 1 800 kg CO₂-equivalents. Crushed rock falls in between at 370 kg, with emissions primarily resulting from extraction, crushing, and transportation. In Result 2, which includes all life cycle stages (A–D), cellular glass accounts for 650 kg CO₂-equivalents, crushed rock for 1 700 kg, and XPS for 2 600 kg CO₂-equivalents. In terms of cost, XPS is the most economical option with a total cost of approximately 27 900 SEK. Foam glass is slightly more expensive SEK 28 300 SEK, while crushed rock is the most costly alternative around 39 000 SEK, primarily due to deeper excavation and increased labor effort. The study thus identifies an interesting conflict: the option with the highest climate impact is also the cheapest, while the most environmentally friendly alternative is only marginally more expensive yet significantly more sustainable in the long run. Work environment aspects have also been considered. Crushed rock and foam glass are advantageous from an ergonomic standpoint, as they are largely handled with machinery reducing physical strain. In contrast, XPS boards must be laid manually which can lead to increased ergonomic stress for workers. The conclusion is that there is no universally best option, instead material choices should be adapted to the specific requirements, goals, and conditions of each project. If sustainability is prioritized, foam glass should be preferred whereas a focus on cost often leads to the choice of XPS. To enable a more sustainable road construction industry, the study suggests that climate requirements and incentives should be incorporated into future procurement processes.
