LEXICAL LAYERS IN VUK’S LYRICAL FOLK POEMS

    No full text
The paper in a systematic way analyzes the vocabulary used in Vuk’s lyrical folk poems (SNP1) stratified according to different criteria: diastratic, diatopic, stylistic and functional: outdated vocabulary (archaisms and historicisms), territorially marked vocabulary (provincialisms and dialecticisms), functionally and stylistically vocabulary and expressive vocabulary (poetic words, poeticisms, fixed epithets and words of subjective denotation), as well as loanwords and proper names. It is shown that the isolated lexical layers make the basis of the considered corpus and at the same time serve as the key to the study of the language and style of this folk literary genre. The outdated and territorially marked lexicon, which together with loanwords makes up about 20% of the total number of words used in the poems, testifies to the historical and cultural conditions of the time period in which the poems were created. Their number in the poems is actually much higher, since more than 450 words in the consulted dictionaries are not qualified in any way, although they can be considered outdated in relation to the modern language standard. Turkishisms are dominant in the loanword layer. Other lexical layers, poetic words, fixed epithets, the choruses, diminutives and personal names, also have a very important role in shaping the emotional and poetic tone of these poems. In this way, the conducted analysis not only contributes to a better understanding of the language of lyrical folk poems, but also provides valuable insight into the wider socio-historical and cultural context, showing how the lexicon supports the authenticity and preserves the cultural and historical heritage of the poems. At the same time, the work sheds light on the dynamics of language change and language adaptation over time, pointing to the continuity and dynamics of language development under the influence of various cultural and historical factor

Sovražni govor in načrtovano sovraštvo: protimigrantski diskurz v Srbiji

This article explores hate speech as a governing logic embedded in Serbia’s migration management, extending beyond explicit verbal hostility to encompass institutionalized silence, public spectacles, and policy design. Drawing on speech act theory, critical discourse analysis, and scholarship on racialized governance, it conceptualizes hate speech as a performative act with perlocutionary force. Through ethnographic and discursive analysis, the article shows how people on the move are rendered both hyper-visible and absent – criminalized, pitied, or erased – depending on political need. It argues that hate speech, framed through calculated ambivalence and absent presence, sustains exclusionary practices and legitimizes state and societal violence against migrants. Medtem birokratska tišina in nevidne institucionalne prakse še dodatno krepijo izključevanje in dehumanizacijo.

In 1949, the Ethnographic Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences launched a project of collecting “the folklore of the National Liberation War, Socialist Revolution, and the socialist construction of the country.” The project members were sent to different construction sites along the route of the “Highway of Brotherhood and Unity,” which was to be built between Belgrade and Zagreb. Around seventy people participated in this massive project, due to which, today we have an extensive collection of songs that thematize the post-WW2 construction of the socialist Yugoslavia, which involved not only the making of roads, railways, and other economic infrastructure, but also the ideological formation of a new citizen ready and willing to become the bearer of transition processes that were initiated in Yugoslavia after the Second World War. The songs implied a radical rejection of the previous ideological paradigms and their carriers, and the adoption of the new ones, shaped in accordance with the plans and ambitions of the new revolutionary communist elite. Based on the digitized corpus of songs from the collection, the paper focuses on several specific thematic cycles which can be marked as the “hot spots” of the ideological indoctrination of young people, which was intense at that time. The importance of youth volunteer work actions in the process of early ideological shaping of the minds of the Yugoslav youth is discussed, as well as the role of the use of folklore and folk songs in that process

MILK AND ITS PROCESSING IN THE LIVESTOCK TERMINOLOGY OF SVINICA IN ROMANIA

This paper, based on the field research in dialectology in the village of Svinica (Rom. Svinița) in Romania (Mehedinți county) with the aim of collecting the livestock terminology in this speech, presents one of its segments – the vocabulary related to milk and its processing. The recorded corpus material is expanded by data from the dictionary included in the monograph authored by M. Tomić titled The Speech of the Inhabitants of Svinica (1984). The main goal of this paper is to present the vocabulary of milk and its processing in the speech of the Serbian emigrants in Svinica in the context of the same vocabulary in the Prizren-Timok dialect area – by comparing it to the lexical material from the fifty sites across the Prizren-Timok dialect area treated in Simić (2024). This paper deals with the impact of the isolation of the speech of Svinica dating back several centuries on this segment of livestock terminology and indicates the peculiarities of independent development in a foreign linguistic environment, as well as the archaic character of the examined word stock. The research findings indicate that the vocabulary related to milk and milk processing in the speech of Svinica belongs to the general word stock of the Serbian language. Lexical parallels in the Prizren-Timok dialect area are much broader than the ones in the Timok area, so that the isoglosses of certain lexemes enter the Svrljig and/or Zaplanje area, and it is often the case that the state in Svinica is confirmed only in the southeast of the Južna Morava zone. The peculiarities of the speech of Svinica developed as a result of the independent development in a foreign linguistic environment are predominantly to do with grammar and the majority of those innovations are also present in other Serbian peripheral speeches on the territory of Romania. The established lexical specific features of the speech of Svinica are viewed in the light of Romanian environment, and the broader Karpathian and Balkan-Karpathian environment. Several lexical features are confirmed to represent archaic lexical parallels with other peripheral Slavic areas – Shtokavian, Western South Slavic, and even North Slavic

Mixed Al2O3/ZnO coatings obtained by plasma electrolytic oxidation process (PEO) of aluminum in water solution boric acid and borax with addition ZnO nanoparticles. The oxide coatings were characterized by Scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. It was found that chemical and phase compositions strongly depend on PEO time. It was shown that photocatalytic activity was improved by longer time of PEO process

Super-hard (Hf,Mo,Ti,V,W)B2 was synthesized by boro-carbothermal reduction and densified by spark plasma sintering. This composition was produced for the first time as a single-phase ceramic in the present research. The optimized ceramic had a single hexagonal AlB2-type crystalline phase with a grain size of 3.8 µm and homogeneous distribution of the constituent metals. The Vickers hardness exhibited the indentation size effect, increasing from 27 GPa at a load of 9.8 N to as high as 66 GPa at a load of 0.49 N. This is the highest hardness reported to date for high entropy boride ceramics. This is the peer-reviewed version of the article: Filipovic, Suzana, Nina Obradovic, Greg E. Hilmas, William G. Fahrenholtz, Donald W. Brenner, Jon‐Paul Maria, Douglas E. Wolfe, Eva Zurek, Xiomara Campilongo, and Stefano Curtarolo. 2024. ‘A Super‐hard High Entropy Boride Containing Hf, Mo, Ti, V, and W’. The Two Lives of Aleksandr Andreevič Arhangel΄skij and Aleksandr Vasil΄evič Nikol΄skij: The Fates of Masters of Russian Sacred Music in a Pivotal Era

    No full text
This article delineates the main developments of Russian choral music in the late nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries by examining the lives of Aleksandr Andreevič Arhangelʹskij and Aleksandr Vasilʹevič Nikolʹskij. It considers transformations in the choral landscape during the pivotal years of the February and October revolutions in Russia and subsequently in the Soviet period. It highlights the circumstances in which Russian sacred music found itself in the new state and reveals how, in part thanks to Arhangelʹskij and Nikolʹskij, traditional practices were sustained – both within the USSR and among the Russians abroad

From the Sun City to Kuršumlija: De-exotization and Dystopian Local Patriotism in Serbian Science Fiction

Time i distopijski motivi dobijaju lokalni karakter. Based on several examples, the paper discusses the dystopian themes of Serbian science fiction in the past four decades. In this period SF writers attempted to approach the literary mainstream by increasingly abandoning their (Anglophone) pseudonyms and by shifting to the local social, political, historical and ethnographic context. In this process dystopian topics acquired a distinctly local character. The paper shows how the pragmatic efforts of a marginalized group of authors to gain a greater reputation and a better position on the market through literary emancipation, in conjunction with a more general process of re-traditionalization, produced a fruitful interaction between the global and the local in the domain of literary dystopia
