The Serbian Patriarch Varnava and Apostolic Nuncio Pellegrinetti (1930-1937)

    No full text
The second half of the diplomatic service of the Apostolic Nuncio Pellegrinetti in Belgrade coincides with the period when Patriarch Varnava Rosić (1930-1937) was the head of the Serbian Church. The Nuncio had a great interest in the Serbian Church, and especially in the Patriarch, about whose election, enthronement and views on the Catholic Church he sent reports to the Secretariat of State of the Holy See, wrote notes in his diary and commented in private correspondence. Nuncio’s main interest was the issuance of the Concordat, to the ratification of which the Serbian Church and the Patriarch opposed. Nuncio was also interested in the illness, death and burial of Patriarch Varnava. This paper includes new information from the post-war period (from the archives from the pontificate of Pope Pius XII) related to Patriarch’s mysterious death in 1937

In this paper, we analyze pluralia tantum nouns that have dual gender. The syncretism of case forms in the plural, along with shared endings across genders, allows for variation in the base form. Although these words are generally less frequently used, they are accurately and meticulously recorded in dictionaries. The variants we analyzed are not always of equal rank; even when considered absolute doublets, without any distinct marking, speakers tend to favor one of the forms

When Yugoslavia Began to Speak Jazz: The Magazine Svijet Jazza (1941) in Interwar Popular Culture

    No full text
Published in Zagreb between January and April 1941, the monthly magazine Svijet jazza [The World of Jazz] was the first periodical in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia dedicated exclusively to jazz music. It featured original articles and reviews of prominent musical events, as well as translations from a range of foreign jazz magazines. Taking inspiration from American publications such as The Orchestra World and Metronome, Svijet jazza brought together contributors and correspondents from Ljubljana, Belgrade, Split, and New York. Its publication came to an abrupt end, after only four issues, with the outbreak of World War II in Yugoslavia. An analysis of Svijet jazza reveals how jazz in interwar Yugoslavia emerged as a marker of modernity and an integral part of the broader field of popular culture

Manolis Kalomiris’s Romeic Suite (1907/1910) as an Initiatory Semantic Signifier of the Composer’s Ideology and Creation. A Music-Analytical and Intertextual Approach

    No full text
Manolis Kalomiris (1883–1962), the leader of the Greek National School of composers, continuously sought to express his ideas through both music and words. This paper examines the formation of his ideology up to 1910, focusing on his writings (articles, the 1908 “program-manifesto”) and his orchestral Romeic Suite (1907/1910). Musical and textual co-examination under semantic codes reveals external influences, symbolic meanings, and ideological identity of the composer and his work. It is asserted that within the historical context of the early 1910s, Kalomiris used intertextual discourse to convey his ideological codes to Greek literary, political, and musical audiences of the time

This paper we analyzed the sustainability of the custom of offering farmers’ candles (ratarske sveće) to the Tronoša Monastery as an element of intangible cultural heritage. The research shows that, in the past, this tradition was entirely under the authority of the local community, which independently organized all related activities. However, in recent decades, representatives of the Serbian Orthodox Church – primarily the monks from the Tronoša Monastery – have assumed a significant role in preserving the custom, acting as custodians and organizers of the ritual. During field research conducted in 2022, it was established that the custom, although stripped of its former magical and agrarian functions, continues to exist as a religious ritual, primarily due to the institutional support of the Orthodox Church and the spiritual motivation of the participants. It has also been established that church authorities, in addition to organizing customs, also contribute to the interpretation of customs in a religious context and provide religious legitimation to the entire ritual. At the same time, the paper highlights certain risks associated with this model of sustainability. Reliance on the personal authority of individual clergy members’ raises concerns about the future of the custom. Although institutional support enables the preservation of the form, the paper problematizes the possible loss of control of the local community over its own heritage and the narrowing of space for intergenerational transmission without the help of representatives of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The paper concludes that ensuring the sustainability of the custom requires a balance between institutional authority and active local community participation, along with the involvement of younger generations. The ritual of making and lighting farmers’ candles stands as an example of successful cultural transformation, but also as a reminder of the complex power dynamics embedded in the processes of safeguarding intangible cultural heritage

Radiophonic Music Essay and Applied Musicology: "Ono malo čega se sećam" by Ivana Trišić

    No full text
By the designation radiophonic music essay the author of the study understands radio shows and radio art works in which the full potential of radio as media was used with the goals to avoid the trap of stereotypical narration and to achieve dynamic presentation. The already mentioned full media potential refers to documentary, poetic and drama segments in addition to music, informative and educational elements that are expected in radio programs on music. Musicologist and music critic Ivana Trišić achieved these goals in her radio art work "Ono malo čega se sećam" ["Little That I Remember"] that was produced in Radio Belgrade in 1982. In this piece, after Trišić juxtaposes atomic bomb explosion and the destruction of tonality in the composition "Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima" by Krzysztof Penderecki, she reconstructs the consequences of bombing and the reception of the Penderecki’s work. This study first aims to present the main ideas behind the discipline of applied musicology, with the focus on those relevant to this topic. Second, it connects characteristics of the work "Ono malo čega se sećam" to the experimental radio art practiced in Radio Belgrade. Finally, potentials of the form of radiophonic music essay in the context of applied musicology are pointed out.Zbornik radova sa međunarodnog naučnog skupa „Muzika u društvu” (Sarajevo, 7-10.12.2022). Dynasty as a carrier of identification: old Serbian genealogies

    No full text
The paper provides a sketch for the study of collective identities in the medieval and early modern period. The need for a new approach stems from the fact that the use of the concepts that arose during the 18th century – such as patriotism and nationalism, even when redefined, can lead to research anachronism. Their use also paves the way for the influence of contemporary social and political experience on research since it uses categories of practice as categories of analysis. Therefore, it is proposed to use the term identification, which emphasizes that it is a cognitive process of creating a sense of belonging to a group with variable meanings and outcomes. The approach is illustrated with the example of old Serbian genealogies, written and copied between the second half of the 14th and the 18th century, where several categories of identification stand out: the dynasty itself, the adjective “Serbian”, concept of Orthodoxy, as well as the naming of the “Other”. With them, the notion of fatherland is analysed, as one of the key concepts of the volume. It is shown that the dynasty was redefined with almost every redaction, but that some categories – such as the Serbian and Orthodox determinants – remain stable. The naming of others occasionally became significant, while the concept of fatherland has a completely different meaning than the one it carries in contemporary political and social life. Diachronic changes, as well as synchronic differences between copies of genealogies, testify to various ways the community was imagined through the history of the ruling dynasty or the remembrance of the past. These notions served as a repository of meaning for political action in centuries of nation-building

Natural Sunlight Driven Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue and Rhodamine B over Nanocrystalline Zn2SnO4/SnO2

    No full text
The natural sunlight driven photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants is a sustainablesolution for water purification. The use of heterojunction nanocomposites in this processshows promise for improved photodegradation efficiency. In this work, nanocrystallineZn2SnO4/SnO2 obtained by the solid-state synthesis method was tested as a heterojunctionphotocatalyst material for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) and Rhodamine B(RhB) dyes as single and multicomponent systems in natural sunlight. Characterization ofthe structure and morphology of the synthesized nanocomposite using X-ray diffraction(XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electronmicroscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) combined with energydispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy confirmedthe formation of Zn2SnO4/SnO2 and heterojunctions between Zn2SnO4 and the SnO2nanoparticles. A photodegradation efficiency of 99.1% was achieved in 120 min with 50 mgof the photocatalyst for the degradation of MB and 70.6% for the degradation of RhB underthe same conditions. In the multicomponent system, the degradation efficiency of 97.9% forMB and 53.2% for RhB was obtained with only 15 mg of the photocatalyst. The degradationof MB occurred through N-demethylation and the formation of azure intermediates anddegradation of RhB occurred through sequential deethylation and fragmentation of thexanthene ring, both in single and multicomponent systems.Preprint: [http://dx.doi.org/10.20944/preprints202506.1607.v1]Preprint: [https://hdl.handle.net/21.15107/rcub_dais_17959

Newly Formed Words in Serbian with the Suffixoid –oid

    No full text
This paper examines the derivational productivity of the suffixoide -oid in contemporary Serbian, based on data from the corpus resources PDRS 1.0 and CLASSLA-web.sr. The analysis identifies several types of newly attested lexemes: neutral scientific and technical terms, mostly borrowings from English, and politically or ideologically marked neologisms created through domestic word formation processes. In scientific contexts, the suffixoide -oid typically conveys the meaning of resemblance or approximation. However, in political and public discourse, it often acquires a derogatory, ironic, or ideologically charged nuance (e.g., vučićoid, sorošoid, državoid). Particular emphasis is placed on the use of -oid in forming negative labels and discrediting expressions within media and online discourse. The findings suggest that -oid in Serbian functions not only as a descriptive morpheme but also as a powerful tool for linguistic evaluation and ideological polarization
