Youth Symbolism in the Funeral Rites of the Balkan Slavs

    No full text
This paper will focus on those elements of the Balkan Slavic burial rituals that "show" that the deceased was young. Тhese characteristics are not always associated with marriage as it was observed in previous research

Exploring Belgrade’s Rossi Fest in Light of Contemporary Music Festival Strategies

    No full text
Predmet ovog teksta je beogradski muzički festival Rossi fest, ustanovljen 2018. i inspirisan sintezom Istoka, tj. jevrejskih tradicionalnih i religijskih tekstova, i Zapada, odnosno zapadnoevropske muzike, u stvaralaštvu kompozitora Salomona Rossija (1570–c.1630). The subject of this paper is the Belgrade’s Rossi Fest, founded in 2018. and inspired by the synthesis of the East (that is, Jewish traditional and religious texts) and West, or music of West Europe, which is to be recognized in the work of composer Salomone Rossi (1570–c.1630). With that in mind, the goal of the festival is to promote Jewish culture, as well as the amalgamation of different traditions, as well as pieces from the cannon with contemporary art music. Rossi Fest works in several complementary program paths: competition for young composers, concerts, lectures, summer opera academy, masterclasses. On this occasion, we will present and analyse this program concept in the context of contemporary festival strategies and the idea of the intercultural dialogue, with some attention given also to the place of applied musicology on this festival stage

Chitosan assisted solvothermal synthesis of NaY1-xGdxF4:Yb/Er nanoparticles for non-specific cell labeling and temperature sensing

    No full text
This study shows the chitosan assisted solvothermal synthesis of NaY1-xGdxF4: Yb/Er nanoparticles, types of lanthanide doped up-converting nanoparticles (UCNPs), which show a significant potential as fluorescent probes for early cancer detection. Under near-infrared light these nanoparticles can emit visible or ultraviolet light, which makes deep noninvasive tissue imaging possible. The synthesis was performed in the presence of chitosan, for the purpose of achieving the production of biocompatible nanoparticles that could be further used for non-specific cell labeling. In order to characterize obtained nanoparticles, their size, shape, phase and optical properties, following analyses were performed: X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, as well as the cytotoxicity test, to assess the biological safety of the particles. For cell labeling two types of cells were used, HS-5 fibroblast cell line and SCC–25 oral cancer cell line. For in vitro imaging of the cells, Nonlinear Laser Scanning Microscopy was performed with excitation wavelengths of 730 nm in femtosecond mode for the imaging of cells autofluorescence and 976 nm in continuous wave mode for the excitation of UCNPs. The results showed that the UCNPs were located adjacent to the plasma membrane in the cytoplasmic region of both, healthy and cancer cell lines, and that the cells retained their original morphology. Lastly, the nanoparticles were further analyzed in order to check the potential for optical thermometry. The measured relative sensitivity of ~1.3% K-1 implied that these nanoparticles could be used for measuring the temperature in tissues

This paper analyzes the corpus of derivatives presented by Vuk St. Karadžić in his study titled Glavna svršivanja suštestvitelni i prilagatelni imena u srpskom jeziku (1828). The main goal of the analysis is to categorize the examples into derivational-semantic categories, and additionally, to highlight various observations made by Vuk, regarding the derivation of nouns, which relate to various elements currently discussed in contemporary derivatology: paraphrasing the derivational meaning, the category affiliation of the derivational base, expanded variants of suffixes, the ø suffix. The analysis of the material on which the word formation work of Vuk is based shows that examples of all typical derivational-semantic categories can be found in varying degrees of frequency in the derivational system of the Serbian language: nomina agentis, nomina actoris, nomina attributiva, nomina instrumenti, nomina loci, nomina essendi, nomina actionis, nomina moti, nomina nationalia et regionalia, nomina deminutiva, nomina augmentativa, nomina collectiva

Sažetak: Analiza trasa, karaktera i značaja glavnih rimskih i savremenih kopnenih i fluvijalnih komunikacija u Posavini, na krajnjem jugu rimske provincije Panonije (današnji sever Bosne i Hercegovine), predstavlja složenu i višedimenzionalnu istraživačku temu. Naučni pristup ovom problemu podrazumeva uključivanje širokog spektra arheoloških, istorijskih i epigrafskih svedočanstava, uz oslanjanje na relevantne pisane izvore. Paralelna analiza savremenih komunikacionih tokova i njihovih različitih aspekata, u poređenju s prostornom logikom i uslovima rimskog doba, omogućava uvid u prednosti i ograničenja posmatranih epoha.

In situ synthesis of biocompatible NaY1−xGdxF4:Yb/Er nanoparticles for cell labeling and temperature sensing

    No full text
Biocompatible, up-converting NaY1-xGdxF4:Yb/Er nanoparticles have been successfully obtained in situ by chitosan assisted solvothermal synthesis, and were further characterized to check their potential for optical thermometry. The temperature dependent change in the green emission intensity, originating from the thermalization between 4S3/2 and 2H11/2 levels, implied maximum relative sensitivity of 1.3 %K−1 in the physiologically interesting temperature range. Presence of chitosan ligands at the nanoparticles surface promotes their biocompatibility. The nanoparticles concentration ranging from 10 to 50 µg/mL yielded viability higher than 80 % for HS-5 fibroblast and SCC-25 oral cancer cells. Efficient visualization of αNaY0.65Gd0.15F4:Yb0.18Er0.02 nanoparticles in cytoplasmic region of cells, under excitation at 976 nm, validates their potential to be used for cell labeling and temperature sensing in tissue. This is the peer reviewed version of the paper: Piljević, Miljana, Dinić, Ivana, Mančić, Lidija, Vuković, Marina, Tomić, Miloš, Rabanal, Maria Eugenia, Lazarević, Miloš, Rabasović, Mihailo D., "In situ synthesis of biocompatible NaY1−xGdxF4:Yb/Er nanoparticles for cell labeling and temperature sensing" in Inorganic Chemistry Communications, 176 (2025):114239, [https://doi.org/10.1016/j.inoche.2025.114239

Corrosion Stability and Biological Activity of Anodized cpTi for Dental Application

    No full text
Anodic oxidation of titanium implants is a practical, cost-effective method to enhance implant success, especially due to rising hypersensitivity concerns. This study investigated the electrochemical behavior, surface characteristics, and biocompatibility of anodized commercially pure titanium (cpTi, grade IV). Anodization is performed on polished, cleaned cpTi sheet samples in 1 M H2SO4 using a constant voltage of 15 V for 15 and 45 min. The color of oxide layer is evaluated using CIELab color space, while composition is analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) equipped with Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS). Additionally, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are performed to identify and monitor phase transformations of formed titanium oxides. Corrosion measurements are performed in 9 g L–1 NaCl, pH = 7.4, and shows excellent corrosion stability of the anodized samples in comparison with pure titanium. Biological response is assessed by mitochondrial activity and gene expression of human fibroblasts. Anodized surfaces, particularly Ti-45, promoted higher mitochondrial activity and upregulation of adhesion-related genes (N-cadherin and Vimentin) in human gingival fibroblasts, indicating improved biocompatibility and potential for enhanced early soft tissue integration.A peer-reviewed article of this preprint also exists: [https://doi.org/10.3390/met15070817

A holy alliance or a fight against windmills?: some considerations on the definition of anticommunism

    No full text
Да ли је антикомунизам бесмислица, епифеномен, фуснота историје, који је са историјске позорнице нестао рушењем Берлинског зида и суновратом „реалног социјализма”?This paper deals with the complex phenomenon of anticommunism, its elusive definition, and various approaches towards its understanding. At first glance, it seems that it would best be understood as the rejection of communism. However, upon closer inspection, such a reductive approach only poses more questions, as the definition of anticommunism hinges on the definition of communism. Given the highly persistent debate about the existence of “true” communism and the long history of internal rifts and sectarianism within the workers` movement, which led to a surge in accusations of anticommunism on the left, it seems as though a meaningful definition of anticommunism has to be unshackled from the definition of communism. Furthermore, for the majority of anticommunists, there was little or no difference between social democrats, communists or various other radical leftist organizations. In fact, “communism” was mainly used as a catch-all term for enemies and was sometimes extended to encompass even liberals. Therefore, it seems much more logical to approach anticommunism as an ideological and practical hostility towards those political ideas and actors that are perceived as communists

Spatially distributed sequential stimulation applied to the paralyzed quadriceps muscles while performing motor-assisted FES cycling

    No full text
Spatially distributed sequential stimulation (SDSS) demonstrated greater fatigue-reducing ability and power output when performing isometric or isokinetic contractions of the paralyzed quadriceps muscles compared to the equivalent conventional functional electrical stimulation (FES) in a single electrode stimulation (SES) configuration. The present study aims to systematically assess the power output and fatigue-reducing properties of SDSS versus SES applied to the paralyzed quadriceps muscles of subjects performing motor-assisted FES cycling. Four subjects (three with spinal cord injury and one with multiple sclerosis) without lower-limb motor function participated in two multiday experimental sessions, each with both SDSS and SES stimulation phases. The results of the present study show that muscles stimulated with SDSS produced a significantly higher mean power (10.5 W ± 1.2 W) compared to SES (4.3 W ± 1.4 W), corresponding to an increase of approximately 144%, while inducing a similar amount of muscle fatigue (SDSS: 68.9% ± 8.0% vs. SES: 75.3% ± 13.4%). These findings suggest that SDSS is superior to SES when applied to paralyzed quadriceps muscles of the subjects performing FES cycling using moderate-intensity stimulation. Further research with larger sample size is needed to ascertain these findings and to explore applications of SDSS on FES cycling and FES exercise in general, over longer stimulation sessions under high-intensity stimulation conditions
