Biopolymer-based encapsulation of Adriatic Ulva biomass bioactives: environmentally friendly technological advance in marine functional ingredients

    No full text
Introduction: The genus Ulva, abundant in the Adriatic Sea, serves as a sustainable source of bioactive compounds, including polyphenols and natural pigments such as chlorophylls and carotenoids, with potential applications in the food, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, and environmental protection sectors. However, their low chemical stability, bioavailability, and undesirable sensory properties limit practical use. Methods: This study explored encapsulation methods for Ulva spp. extract using spray-drying and freeze-drying techniques, with biopolymer carriers such as maltodextrin as a conventional option and polydextrose as an innovative alternative, to enhance the stability and functionality of the bioactive compounds. Technological properties, including encapsulation yield, moisture content, bulk and tapped densities, rehydration time, and encapsulation efficiency, were evaluated, along with FTIR, DSC, and HPLC analyses. Results and discussion: Comparative results showed that, while the spray-dried extract without a carrier achieved the highest polyphenolic encapsulation efficiency of 86.5%, polydextrose was more effective than maltodextrin in protecting total carotenoids and lutein. Spray-dried powders exhibited greater moisture reduction and improved powder properties than freeze-dried powders, which rehydrated faster and maintained good thermal stability up to 240°C. Antioxidant assays (DPPH, ABTS, RP) showed similarly high activity across all formulations, indicating that the functional compounds were preserved regardless of the encapsulation method. These findings demonstrate that combining suitable encapsulation techniques with tailored biopolymer carriers enhances the stability, bioactivity, and handling of Ulva-derived bioactive compounds. This approach promotes the valorization of underutilized macroalgal biomass within blue biotechnology, aligns with green and circular bioeconomy principles, and offers promising pathways for developing innovative marine-derived functional ingredients

    High-Fidelity 3D Microstructural Characterization of ZrB2 During Hot-Pressing

    No full text
Standard ultra-high temperature ceramic (UHTC) manufacturing results in components with large differences in properties due to variability in microstructural “critical flaw” distributions. Critical flaws can be any irregularity in a component, such as a secondary phase, cracks, pores, etc. This is problematic when designing reproducible UHTC components. The goal of this project is to understand how these critical flaws evolve during hot pressing of ZrB2 (a UHTC) by examining them in 3D. This study incorporates 3D imaging such as: (i) ex-situ X-ray μ-CT and (ii) 3D electron imaging and backscattered diffraction data collected at different stages of densification. 3D microstructure statistics along with unique observations of individual pore and secondary phase evolution will be presented. This data is brought together to give a holistic view of the densification of ZrB2 during hot pressing at multiple length scales.Conference website: https://www.tms.org/SpecialtyCongress202

U ovom izlaganju, analiziram popularnu muziku kao simboličko sredstvo komunikacije i zajedničkog identitetskog resursa među pripadnicima treće i četvrte generacije potomaka srpskih radnih migranata u Beču.

Aesthetics of Ugliness – Sound and Image of Extreme Metal Music

Naspram lijepoga, uzvišenog, korisnog, ispravnog, moralnog stajalo je ružno, pogreš- no, čudovišno, zazorno i nemoralno. Sredinom 19. stoljeća, estetika ružnog konačno dobiva centralno mjesto u procesu proučavanja, i to u utemeljujućoj studiji Estetika ružnog Karla Rosenkranza (1853.). Throughout the history of Western art, the concept of ugly has mostly been defined in relation to beauty. Against the beautiful, sublime, useful, correct, moral, stood the ugly, wrong, monstrous, disgusting and immoral. In the mid-19th century, the aesthetics of the ugly finally received a central place in the study process, in the seminal study Aesthetics of Ugliness by Karl Rosenkranz (1853). Following this, and especially with the turn of the 20th century, the concept of ugly began to feature more prominently in mainstream art, as well as in philosophical i.e. aesthetic thought. The topic of this article is the research of the concept and aesthetics of ugly in a contemporary musical form of extreme metal music, the global phenomenon that emerged in the eighties of the 20th century and continues to develop until today. The paper aims to examine how ugliness has materialized, has been shaped, and been perceived in extreme metal music, which is reputed to be the most radical set of metal subgenres in the discursive, visual and sonic sens

Pored naučnoistraživačkog rada u oblasti muzikologije i etnomuzikologije, u Muzikološkom institutu SANU (osnovanom 1947. godine) kontinuirano se sprovodi i „[...] široka prosvetna i kulturna aktivnost, posvećena stručnjacima, ali i najširim krugovima slušalaca zainteresovanih za srpsku muzičku baštinu [...]” (https://music.sanu.ac.rs).

From Pax Basiliana to Pax Byzantina

In the last decades of the 10th and first decades of the 11th century, the Byzantine Empire waged war against the Bulgarians for control of the Balkan interior. An all-out war began in 976 with a rebellion of the so-called Kometopouloi brothers – David, Aaron, Moses, and Samuel. Their uprising evolved into a full-blown war to re-establish the Bulgarian Empire, as John I Tzimiskes (969–976) had crushed the Empire as a byproduct of a military campaign launched against the Russians in 971. The Bulgarians lost a chunk of their territories, primarily in the northeastern part of the Balkans, with their capitals, Pliska and Preslav. Tzimiskes stripped the Bulgarian emperor Boris II (969–971) of his imperial insignia but, at the same time, made him a Byzantine dignitary. Boris received the title of magistros. However, this overwhelming military and political success was short-lived. Soon, Tzimiskes was dead and succeeded by Basil II (976–1025), and Samuel, the most able and the youngest of the Kometopouloi brothers, emerged as the rebel leader. The center of the rebellion was in the western and southwestern regions of the once-mighty Bulgarian Empire. In those territories, the idea of an independent Bulgarian state continued to be fiercely defended until 1019. The Bulgarian political elites and clergy persistently put up resistance against the Byzantine army for more than four decades (976–1019). The war was waged at varying degrees of intensity for over forty years, with the hostilities occasionally interrupted by short-lived truces. We dedicate this book to our esteemed professor Ljubomir Maksimović with heartfelt thanks for his unwavering support to successive generations of researchers at the Institute for Byzantine Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts

The Archbishopric of Ohrid from the 11th to the 13th Century: Territorial and Ideological Framework

    No full text
The Archbishopric of Ohrid was undoubtedly the most significant instrument in the implementation of Byzantine policy on the territory of conquered Bulgaria following the year 1018. It was the only institution hailing from the era of the First Bulgarian Empire that survived and persisted under new circumstances, playing a key role within them. It contributed to the preservation of the very term Bulgaria and the defining of its geographical identity and, as the most important instrument of imperial policy, it directly influenced the shaping of the identity of the local population. A number of significant figures were appointed as representatives of imperial policy in the position of archbishop residing on the throne in Ohrid, and their appointment fell under the direct jurisdiction of the emperor–a few of these individuals were amongst the most notable intellectuals of Byzantine society in the period between the 11th and 13th century, such as Leo of Ohrid, Theophylact of Ohrid, Demetrios Chomatenos, some even hailing from amongst the closest of imperial relatives, as was John (Adrian) Komnenos. Scholarship has had much to say regarding the history of the Archbishopric of Ohrid in the period between the year 1018 and the beginning of the 13th century, and the life and activities of its most significant hierarchs, thus we will limit our research in this chapter to two aspects of its activity in the said period, which are of immense interest for the phenomenon of Byzantinization – the territorial development of its diocesan organisation and its influence on the identity of Byzantine Bulgaria. We dedicate this book to our esteemed professor Ljubomir Maksimović with heartfelt thanks for his unwavering support to successive generations of researchers at the Institute for Byzantine Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts

    No full text
The paper presents microtoponyms in Zaplanjе from the lexical-semantic point of view. For the purposes of this paper, the analysis was carried out from one aspect – names motivated by livestock farming were taken into account. The microtoponymic units were viewed within semantic groups and subgroups established on the basis of dominant meaning components. Therefore, the names were divided into four semantic groups, within which narrower subgroups were distinguished: I. Microtoponyms motivated by animal names, II. Microtoponyms motivated by livestock facilities and habitats, III. Microtoponyms motivated by names for livestock products, IV. Other microtoponymic names. The aim of the paper is to point out the richness of toponyms in this region of southeastern Serbia
