Short-Term Microwave-Assisted Peroxide Treatment for Intensified Lignin and Sugar Recovery from Corncob

    No full text
Despite important advancements in recent years, the use of lignocellulosic biomass in biorefineries remains rather dif-ficult due to the low selectivity of conventional fractionation methods. New or improved technologies that can selectivelytarget specific fraction while preserving the integrity of both polysaccharides and lignin are of utmost importance forexpanding the variety of bio-based products and making biomass valorization more efficient. This study showed that short-term microwave-assisted alkaline H2O2 treatment of corncob can selectively remove lignin and improve the hydrolysisefficiency of polysaccharide fractions allowing for higher sugar recovery. A delignification of 75% and an increase ofcellulose content and surface area by 57% and 76%, respectively, were achieved by applying a 1-minute treatment underoptimized conditions. The treatment considerably improved the adsorption capacity and hydrolysis efficiency of corncob, resulting in a yield of hexose and pentose sugars of 61.18% and 60.24%, which was 2.7-fold and 5.6-fold higher, respec-tively, compared with untreated biomass. XRD and FTIR analyses confirmed significant structural and compositionalalterations in treated corncob caused by treatment. The purity and yield of recovered lignin suggest the potential integra-tion of lignin extraction into corncob biorefinery, which can increase the overall efficiency of corncob processing whilecontributing to the circularity and sustainability of the food system.Peer-reviewed manuscript: [https://hdl.handle.net/21.15107/rcub_dais_17929

The subject of this paper was the research of the syntax-linguistic plan, the least studied in dialectological studies. The focus was on the syntactic research of the variety of Serbian folk speech in Kosovo and Metohija, as a scientific contribution of dialectologists, staff members of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts’ Institute for the Serbian Language. The paper aimed to give a synthetic insight into the most important results of the achieved level of research on the syntax-semantic characteristics of the variety of folk speech in Kosovo and Metohija, to which the mentioned researchers had access. It also pointed to the development of linguistic thought and theoretical-methodological approaches in the individual scientific studies, in which the variety of Serbian folk speech in Kosovo and Metohija was observed as a part of its respective dialect region. We came to the conclusion that the approach to analysis in the separate studies was identical to the theoretically grounded methodological approaches applied to the collection of old Serbian monuments over the last several decades, to the standard Serbian language and the dialect corpus. In addition, through the mentioned studies, these approaches developed and adapted to the analysed material. The analysis includes various prepositions, that is, their involvement in preposition–case connections, by which various syntax-semantic relations (ablative, spatial, temporal, possessive, causal, etc.) in the folk speech of the Prizren–South Morava and Kosovo–Resava dialect formations were expressed. Also, researchers’ attention was mainly paid to the syntax of case usage, while the other syntactic levels were mostly insufficiently explored. An exception in that sense was the syntactic research on verbal idioms of Ibarski Kolašin. The priority of future syntax/semantics research should be the collection of field material and the synchronic study of the Zeta–Sjenica speech in Kosovo and Metohija, which is the least represented in dialectological works

Intensifying the ›Monstrous‹: Extended Vocal Techniques in Extreme Metal Music

    No full text
Extended vocal techniques are an essential puzzle in the sonic transgression picture of extreme metal music. The distorted sound result produced by the usage of these techniques – often described as scary, monstrous, ›from hell‹ – is intriguing in itself, while also being the point of intersection for several problems concerning voice, body, and technology. Assuming the voice is heard from speakers, with Michel Chion’s notion of acousmatic voice in mind, the first instinct is to presuppose the source of the voice, that is, the body from which it comes from. This ›hellish‹ acousmatic voice evokes in the listener vivid images of bestiality behind the sound. What is pictured is something inhuman, something monstrous. Drawing on Bojana Kunst’s idea that the ›monstrous body‹ can be understood as something other than human, as well as the indicator and the symptom of re-thinking the human, and Jelena Novak’s definition of ›monstrous voice‹ which is based on Kunst’s hypothesis, I will examine the position of monstrosity of voice and body in extreme metal music

Correlation Between Nanoscale Crystallinity, Density, and Hydration in Nafion Membranes: Experimental and Molecular Dynamics Insights

Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs) represent one of the candidate technologies for sustainable energy conversion. Nafion is considered a benchmark polymer membrane material due to its high proton conductivity and mechanical stability. However, its performance is strongly influenced by the degree of hydration and nanoscale ordering within the membrane. Density-hydration relationships in Nafion have been probed experimentally and computationally for decades. In this work, we examine how local structure determine the density properties, which allows us to interpret experimental observations and results from models, as well as their deviations from theoretical predictions. We observed changes in water phase morphology not only on hydration levels, but on structural configurations as well, we have considered amorphous and crystalline systems. Well hydrated membrane, which ensure connected water domains is crucial for fuel cell performance, enabling a pathway for proton transport. Water clustering in Nafion membranes was analyzed using the DBSCAN algorithm, which groups closely packed molecules while distinguishing sparse regions as noise. This approach enabled the identification of arbitrarily shaped water aggregates and reduced the influence of outliers. The analysis revealed a clear structural transition with hydration: at low water content, water molecules form small, isolated clusters with limited connectivity; at moderate hydration, larger clusters emerge and begin to percolate in crystalline systems; and at high hydration, nearly continuous water networks develop, spanning the entire simulation domain. Additionally, we determined how water content and membrane structure influence the density of the hydrated Nafion membrane. For all levels of hydration, crystalline configurations have higher densities compared to their amorphous counterparts. That occurs because the spatial ordering allows hydrophobic Nafion backbones to pack closely together with water channels following the direction of the backbones. On the other hand, the globulated nature of the water channels in the amorphous configurations hinders the packing of the backbones, resulting in lower density. Voronoi tesselation analysis reveal that crystallinity enhances molecular packing, yielding higher effective density of the polymer matrix compared to the less ordered amorphous structures. Overall, our findings provide a deeper understanding of how structural ordering influences the density, hydration, and mechanical properties of polymer systems. The interplay between crystallinity and hydration has broad implications for the design of functional polymer materials, particularly in applications such as fuel cell membranes, hydrogels, and biomimetic systems. A combination of molecular simulations, structural analysis, and theoretical modeling offers a powerful framework for predicting the material behavior in hydrated environments, hence guiding future experimental and computational studies in this scientific field.Conference website: [https://ccp2025.ornl.gov

This interdisciplinary study explores the emergence of urban exploration (urbex) as an innovative form of cultural tourism, focusing on abandoned heritage sites in Montenegro, Albania, and Greece. It highlights emblematic ruins such as post-socialist hotels and factories, military complexes, olympic stadions and industrial zones as reflections of socioeconomic transitions and urban transformation. Methodologically, the research combines ethnographic fieldwork, participatory action research, and arts-based inquiry through residencies, workshops, and multimedia co-creation. Findings demonstrate the central role of NGOs in mediating responsible access, fostering community engagement, and linking heritage conservation with artistic practices. Urbex tourism emerges as a catalyst for regional cooperation, cultural sustainability, and socially engaged heritage valorization. Тhe study argues that ruins, when approached collaboratively and sensitively, can be transformed into meaningful resources for intercultural exchange and sustainable tourism development

Тourism аnd Local Community: Perception Analysis – Zlatibor Case

    No full text
Tourism is one of the most complex socio-economic phenomena of today. It involves numerous actors who are closely interconnected. Among the many groups (tour operators, hospitality providers, transport companies, government authorities, professional associations, etc.), members of the local community occupy a particularly important place. Most previous research has focused on tourist motivation and satisfaction. However, understanding the perceptions and attitudes of the local community represents a key prerequisite for tourism development — an activity that brings numerous positive and negative consequences. Among these, the most prominent are economic, socio-cultural, and environmental impacts. The attitude of the local community toward tourism depends on several factors. The most significant among them include: the stage of destination development, level of contact with tourists, type and number of tourists, distance from the tourist zone, seasonality, density of tourist facilities, length of residence, knowledge of tourism, membership in local organizations, satisfaction with local governance, business ties with tourism, community attachment, and residents’ socio-economic and demographic characteristics. Today, many destinations face challenges related to managing their carrying capacity. One of the tourist centers under increasing “pressure” is Zlatibor, located in the southwestern part of Serbia. Its tourism tradition, rich natural and cultural heritage, as well as developed infrastructure and material base, have contributed to its becoming a leading destination both in Serbia and the surrounding region. This is evidenced by the fact that in 2024 there were 423,000 tourist arrivals and over 1.2 million overnight stays. Such a level of development has direct and indirect socio-economic effects, while simultaneously causing significant spatial transformations. Assuming that tourism development in the Zlatibor area greatly affects components of everyday life, a study of the Quality of Life Index was conducted. The instrument comprised three sections: socio-economic and demographic characteristics of respondents; their connection with the tourism industry; and the impact of tourism on components of quality of life, measured using a five-point Likert scale. Exploratory factor analysis was performed, grouping 36 variables into six factors identified as: (F1) urban issues; (F2) performance of public services; (F3) community well-being; (F4) lifestyle; (F5) political power; and (F6) environment. The results indicate that the impact of tourism is mixed in nature. The strongest benefits are observed in the category of “other social issues” (4.30), while the weakest are associated with “community political power” (3.83). The remaining factors show a moderate effect. The most pronounced positive impacts are found in “availability of commercial and hospitality facilities” (4.40), “quality infrastructure” (4.39), “preservation of cultural and historical sites” (4.28), “employment opportunities” (4.27), “access to health services” (4.26), and “existence of cultural institutions” (4.24). Moderate impacts are noted in “political stability” (3.74), “preservation of wildlife habitats” (3.77), “public participation in decision-making bodies” (3.86), and “budget revenues” (3.89). Negative effects are most prominent in “urban development” (11.2%) and “community political power” (9.5%), as well as in “habitat preservation” (18.7%), “urbanization control” (15.2%), “prevention of substance and alcohol abuse” (12.2%), “land-use planning and zoning,” and “public service prices” (11.8%). Based on the overall average score (4.08), a relatively positive impact of tourism on the lives of local community members was established. Despite some minor limitations, this model demonstrated both scientific and practical applicability, as it allows for similar studies to be conducted in other destinations, while simultaneously providing guidance for public policy and strategy makers

    No full text
Based on ethnographic material collected between 2016 and 2024 as part of the long-term project Research on the Culture and History of Serbs in Romania, this presentation explores the process of modification of wedding customs among Serbs in the regions of Poljadija, Pomorišje, Banat Black Mountain, the Danube Gorge, and the central part of Western Banat. Special attention is given to the ways in which traditional elements of wedding rituals have been transformed under the influence of socio-economic and cultural changes, particularly since the 1970s. The presentation follows the transition from a traditional to a so-called transitional wedding model, analyzing changes in ritual structure, participation and roles of actors, as well as the symbolic meaning of specific ritual elements. The aim is to highlight the role and significance of wedding customs as markers of identity through which Serbian communities in Romania both preserve and reshape their cultural practices in the context of modernization, migration, and social transformation
