Ljestve, kečap i majoneza: materijalnost iregulariziranih kretanja balkanskom rutom

    No full text
This article explores how ordinary objects – such as ladders, ketchup, and mayonnaise – become charged with political significance in the context of irregularized migration along the Balkan route. In two ethnographic case studies conducted at the EU’s southeastern borderlands, we examine how these mundane items acquire new functions and meanings in connection with border violence. Ladders, used by migrants to scale fences at the Serbia–Hungary border, circulate through informal networks and become both tools of mobility and mediators of physical harm to border crossers. Ketchup and mayonnaise, distributed as part of survival kits by solidarity networks, reappear grotesquely in instances of sadistic violence during Croatian police pushbacks. Migrants’ creative and tactical use of everyday, makeshift objects reflects the codes of structural violence, as these items become embedded in complex regimes of control and resistance. This dual appropriation – from below and from above – highlights material entanglements of humanitarianism, repression, and embodied agency. Drawing on theoretical frameworks of materiality, migration regime, and critical border studies, and by tracing their circulations and transformations, we uncover how borders are negotiated not only through policy or protest, but through the everyday use and redefinition of things.U ovom se članku istražuje kako obični predmeti – poput ljestava, kečapa i majoneze – poprimaju političku dimenziju u kontekstu iregulariziranih migracija duž balkanske rute.

Vulnerable and Endangered Languages in Europe

    No full text
This book offers a glimpse into the mosaic of Europe’s vulnerable and endangered languages, presenting several case studies from different regions. The languages and varieties in focus are Aromanian, Banat Bulgarian, Fiuman, Irish, Ladino, Romani, Sorbian, Sámi, Štivoroto and Vlach. Each chapter explores the unique challenges faced by these vulnerable and endangered languages and their speakers, highlighting diverse social, political, environmental and economic factors contributing to their decline. Overall, the chapters paint a complex picture of the sociolinguistic situation in Europe, showing that the causes of endangerment are multifaceted and include social, environmental, political and economic factors. The languages discussed are often deeply intertwined with the identity and culture of marginalised or minority communities. While challenges to revitalisation are significant, there is potential for action, particularly in documentation and community engagement. The editors hope this volume will inspire further research, dialogue and action to protect and promote linguistic diversity

Lexicographic Processing of Polysemous Lexemes in Descriptive Dictionaries of the Contemporary Serbian Language

In this paper we present the lexicographic procedure in the processing of lexemes with a highly developed polysemantic structure in descriptive dictionaries of the Serbian language. The lexicographic procedure is presented by using the example of three ambiguous lexemes – the noun head, the verb to open and the adjective big. They were compared to the lexicographic procedures of the same lexemes in selected dictionaries of the Russian, Bulgarian and English language. The analysis showed a great similarity in the processing of these lexemes in the dictionaries of the Serbian language, and their propinquity to the way of the lexicographic processing in the dictionaries of other Slavic languages (Russian and Bulgarian), which indicates a related methodology in dictionary creation. The Oxford English Dictionary takes a different approach to the representation of meaning, but there is an enviable amount of semantic overlappings with the lexemes presented in other dictionaries. In the end we give some recommendations for the improvement of the specific lexicographic procedure of polysemous lexemes

The associations of cash transfers with parental investment and couples' fertility among low-income Serbian Roma

Welfare incentives, by providing parents access to certain resources, may increase the reliability of parental investment returns and thus increase opportunities to invest in offspring quality vs. quantity and eventually a drop in fertility. Using the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 6 for Serbian Roma, this study examined whether improvements in resources, driven by cash transfers, encouraged parental greater engagement per child and a drop in fertility. The sample included 1095 Roma couples whereas a couple's number of biological children by number of years married was used as a proxy for fertility. The results imply that Roma parental response to shifts in environmental risk did not result in more parental time and lower birth rate: parental investment was lower in the welfare households, presently associated with a higher birth rate. Roma paternal investment dropped in the presence of stepchildren and rose in the presence of biological children, allowing mothers to divert their attention to reproduction. Cash transfers may compensate for the additional costs of an extra child and maintain fertility. Despite the amounts received, or the assumed improvements brought about, the changes may have not be perceived as sufficient enough to cause a shift in parental behavior and a drop in fertility

Contemporary societies, both globally and locally, are becoming increasingly aware of the need for inclusiveness and equality, especially when it comes to those social groups that have historically been neglected or marginalized. Women’s empowerment, in a broader context, is becoming one of the key mechanisms in the fight against discrimination and inequality. Its role is particularly significant in cases where women, in addition to gender-based, also face other forms of structural inequality – ethnic, social and economic. This is precisely the situation that characterizes the life contexts of Roma women, whose emancipation, despite the existing history of research, remains insufficiently known, especially in the context of creating deeper and more comprehensive insights into their struggles and achievements. This paper seeks to provide a new perspective on the process of emancipation of Roma women, mapping the paths of the empowerment through the analysis of the obstacles they face, but also the practices of resistance, solidarity and independent actions that build spaces of freedom and subjectivity. The authors do this based on the research conducted within the framework of the HEROINES project, supported by the Centre for the Promotion of Science, and implemented by the Institute of Ethnography of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in cooperation with the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Belgrade and the Roma Women’s Centre “Bibija”. By applying the participatory methodology of community mapping – relatively new in Serbian social sciences and humanities – Roma women gain an active role in shaping their own stories, thereby destabilizing the traditional, paternalistic epistemological position of researchers.

Retro-Futuristic Electronic Music: Ligeti’s Continuum for Two Analog Synthesizer

    No full text
György Ligeti’s extraordinarily virtuosic (even by his own standards) 1968 piece for harpsichord Continuum has attracted many performers, not just harpsichordists. The piece was arranged for two player pianos by Jürgen Hocker, and there are also arrangements for barrel organ (by Pierre Charial), two marimbas (several versions by various performers), etc. As to the original, Ligeti explained: “A harpsichord has an easy touch; it can be played very fast, almost fast enough to reach the level of continuum, but not quite (…). The entire process is a series of sound impulses in rapid succession which create the impression of continuous sound.

The Polyphonic voice of youth [Elektronski izvor] : book of abstracts

    No full text
The International Conference The polyphonic voice of youth provides a space to share research findings on the diverse experiences of young people situated in different structural and geographical locations. It offers an opportunity to reflect on how young people are represented and positioned in contemporary societies and how intersectional political subjectivities are shaped in turbulent social and political times. The conference sessions explore the multiple ways in which young people participate in and shape society. Topics include political, social, creative, and student activism, youth agency, and the challenges of transitioning to adulthood. Sessions also explore civic engagement through community platforms, the resistance and empowerment of marginalized youth, and the networks and spaces that help young people navigate uncertainty. The International Conference The polyphonic voice of youth has been organized by the Institute of Ethnography of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Belgrade. It has taken place on May 13th, 2025, at the SASA premises. We hope this event has offered new perspectives, and valuable insights, and fostered connections that will inspire future collaborations and initiatives

‘Our People’ Online. The Use of a Non-Standardized Variety of Romanian on Social Networks

    No full text
The paper analyses the written use of a non-standardized, mostly oral variety of Romanian on social networks, before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This variety is spoken by the Daj Nostri (“Our People”) diaspora in the German-speaking countries Western Europe. Daj Nostri, who originate from Central and Eastern Serbia, form real and virtual networks and are actively using their language on the Facebook group and TikTok channel the analysis focuses on. The paper investigates the different spellings and code-switching the group members use, the topics that target the use of the variety, pointing to the emerging vernacular literacy, and also the language ideologies that emerge from the online comments. The author concludes that the enduring use of this non-standardized variety of Romanian, more than half a century after the first generations migrated from Serbia to Western Europe, is proof of the crucial role language plays in the ethnic identity of “Our People”, while its current online use makes it appealing to younger generations of speakers

Les emprunts en messapien: vers un bilan

    No full text
