Urbex communication and creative industries: Fromanti-tourism to embracing tourism's possibilities
Urban exploration (urbex or UE) has become a notable subculture where individuals delve into abandoned urban spaces, creating a community that thrives on shared experiences and creative expression. This research explores how urbex communities communicate and contribute to the creative industries within evolving tourism paradigms. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study uses ethnographic methods, case study, and online observations to analyze the communication strategies and dynamics within these communities. The findings reveal that urbex explorers are driven by a sense of adventure, discovery, and a connection to history, valuing authenticity and creativity. The research underscores the importance of digital storytelling in documenting urban decay, which draws tourists seeking unique cultural experiences. Nonetheless, ethical issues such as trespassing and environmental impact present challenges to integrating urbex into sustainable tourism. The study also delves into specific case studies, highlighting initiatives that advocate for cultural heritage preservation while boosting local tourism. Ultimately, this research emphasizes the potential for urban exploration to evolve from a niche activity into a structured business model that benefits both explorers and local communities, while promoting responsible exploration practices and cultural appreciation

The “heroic decasyllable” (“epski deseterac”) has been a distinctive element
of the Serbian traditional oral epics for centuries and is generally associated
among South Slavic peoples with singing to the accompaniment of a traditional
stringed instrument called gusle. Apart from its traditional usage, the heroic
decasyllable has gained by today a new ground thanks to the Information and
Communications Technology, widely spread usage of internet platforms and
social networks for interpersonal communication and communication among
social groups. Our aim is to present and discuss the complexity of contemporary
phenomena related to the communication in heroic decasyllable among the
modern populations of Serbia and Montenegro, and to analyze the interrelation
of this linguistic tool of expression with the variety of thematic fields which are dominantly covered when this register is used. Finally, these phenomena are
observed from the pragmatic perspective in order to point out the key functions
of the current communication in heroic decasyllable in Serbian language.
Topic of the Issue: Folklore in the Digital Age: Continuities and Transformations аcross Online and Offline Spaces (еds Gordana Blagojević, Rea Kakampoura) / Тема броја: Фолклор у дигиталном добу: Континуитети и трансформације у онлајн и офлајн просторима (ур. Quality of life as a component of community survivability – evidence from Zlatibor region (Serbia)
Quality of life is a multidimensional concept. The geographical dimension is crucial as it ties nearly all aspects of people’s lives to a specific space. In this respect, the issue of satisfaction with services and conditions, which affects overall well-being in the community, is particularly highlighted. Therefore, numerous objective and subjective indicators are used. On the basis of subjective well-being theory, a model for evaluating the community’s quality of life was formulated. It was supposed to answer the question of the influence of sociocultural, economic, demographic, and similar parameters (independent variables) on different domains of life quality (dependent variables). The questionnaire included 36 quality-of-life indicators (dependent variables). The research was conducted in the territory of the municipality of Čajetina (Zlatibor region), located in the zone of intensive tourist development. The first segment of the analysis included the importance assessment and the second – the degree of satisfaction. For this purpose, a five-point Likert scale was used. Then, their grouping was performed using exploratory factor analysis, whereby six factors were extracted. These were urban issues (F1), public services (F2), community welfare (F3), way of life (F4), political power (F5), and other social issues (F6). Finally, based on the assessment of importance and satisfaction, a quality of life index (QoL score 1–20) was generated. The results showed that the average value of the index at the group level (F1-F6) was 12.15, i.e., from 10.76 (urban development) to 13.16 (other social issues). In the segment of individual
components, the value was uniform (11.97), i.e., 8.39 (urbanization issues), 9.62 (land use) to 14.58 (availability of commercial and catering facilities). Moderately high values were recorded for the availability of public services (health, education, and other institutions). The above results indicate that regardless of good/bad and favorable/unfavorable living conditions, quality of life is primarily a subjective category. Also, the importance of individual indicators that influence the general quality of life is highlighted. This instrument has proven to have scientific and practical
applications. It provides the basis for similar research in other spatial units. At the same time, it provides guidelines to the creators of public policies and strategies at the national, regional, and local levels
Safeguarding Regional Musical Cultures Under the 2003 UNESCO Convention
Focusing on Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH), the 2003 UNESCO Convention has become a key reference point for safeguarding traditional music in many countries. While the Convention provides a framework for documenting and protecting musical expressions, genres, and styles that transcend modern state borders and thus allow for their regional designation, multinational nominations remain largely underutilised. Drawing on the author’s experience in the ICH field, this presentation will examine the limited application of the Convention through case studies of safeguarding elements of Serbian musical traditions that carry regional significance
The Belgrade String Orchestra “Dušan Skovran” was founded in 1965 by conductor Dušan Skovran as the Academic Chamber Orchestra at the Music Academy in Belgrade. After Skovran’s death in 1975, violinist Aleksandar Pavlović took over as conductor and artistic director. The orchestra, named after its founder, achieved professional status a few years later in 1980. Beyond its commitment to promoting Baroque, Classical, and Romantic art music, as well as diverse 20th-century contemporary works, the Belgrade String Orchestra “Dušan Skovran” has shown a particular dedication to performing music by Serbian and Yugoslav composers. As part of its 60th anniversary celebration (1965–2025), this paper provides an overview of the orchestra’s history and media reception, highlighting its most significant achievements and the challenges it has encountered. Furthermore, the research examines the sheet music within the Academic Chamber Orchestra / Belgrade String Orchestra “Dušan Skovran” legacy. An analysis of this collection, particularly the works by Serbian and Yugoslav composers in its repertoire, underscores its importance as a valuable treasure of our chamber music heritage
Popular Music Studies in Serbia: Tending to Extracurricular Activities
Inspired primarily by the round table held in Ljubljana in December 2023, which led to the establishment of the IASPM CESE branch, this presentation will explore the place of popular music studies within Serbian academic curricula and the scientific work of musicologists, ethnomusicologists, anthropologists, ethnologists, historians, and other related fields. With a broader historical context provided by a look into the 20th century, the presentation will focus on the last 20 to 30 years of popular music studies' emergence and growth in Serbian academia and its margins. The analysis will demonstrate that popular music and culture is not only often excluded from cultural history courses on a larger scale and unrecognized by higher academic bodies as a valid and valuable area of study, but will also highlight the work of Serbian and ex-Yugoslav scholars in the diaspora and examine advancements made in Serbia over the past decade in both the public and academic spheres, particularly within the scientific and pedagogical communities. It will also briefly shed light on the self-organizing attempts to build broader platforms for academics and students on the outskirts of leading scientific and pedagogical institutions, such as Center for popular music research and Association for popular music studies in Belgrade

The Metaphor of Redemption From Slavery in the Interpretation of the Venerable Father Justin
The paper offers a concise analysis of Father Justin Popović’s
comments on the metaphor of redemption from slavery based on his
interpretations of the First Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Corinthians (1 Cor. 6:12–20). The paper examines the conceptual framework in which Father Justin understands and interprets Paul’s words
to the Corinthians that they were “bought with a price” (ἠγοράσασθε
γὰρ τιμῆς) and the meaning and significance of these words within
the broader context of Paul’s anthropology. In a comparative perspective, the paper also examines several relevant scholarly interpretations,
which seek to connect the metaphor of redemption from slavery with
certain historical parallels, such as the ritual abolition of slaves in ancient Delphi, the redemption of captured soldiers (redemptio ab hostibus), and the liberation of the Jews from Egypt and the Babylonian
captivity. As part of the analysis, the authors also take into account the
specific meanings of the term σῶμα in Saint Paul and consider how
in this context Father Justin understands the concepts of slavery and
liberation, the organic metaphors of limbs and belly, as well as the theological concept of God’s ownership of man. и 6.
