Syncretism of Folk Religion and Orthodox Practice in the Ritual of Removing the Evil Eye (Examples from Serbian Communities in the Romanian Banat)
lthough the Orthodox Church does not officially support the practice
of removing the evil eye, considering it a magical act, elements of Orthodox
and folk religion often intersect within this practice. In some cases, women
who perform the ritual of removing the evil eye use not only ritual objects
that hold special significance in folk religion, but also church-sanctioned
or consecrated items, as well as Orthodox prayers. The inclusion of church,
Orthodox elements in the magical practice of removing the evil eye ‒ which
otherwise serves a healing function ‒ grants it additional legitimacy and a
sense of ’divine protection’. During our research into the culture and traditions
of Serbs in Romania, in various parts of the Romanian Banat, we encountered
syncretic forms of evil eye removal that involve the use of embers (charcoal)/
matches, first/clean water from a well, Epiphany holy water, and the Lord’s
Prayer, sometimes accompanied by the recitation of incantations. The aim of
this presentation is to present the living practice of evil eye removal among
Serbs in the Romanian Banat, to document it and ensure its preservation
through future publication, and to highlight the connection between folk
religion and Orthodox practice
Rockov Brothers as Performers: Serbian Orthodox Christian Chanters and Traditional Songs’ Singers in the Town of Battonya/Batanja, Southern Hungary
The paper, in the form of a case study, investigates the unity of traditional musical and performing “language” in Serbian Church Chant and in traditional singing within characteristic cultural settings in the town of Battonya (serb. Batanja) in Southern Hungary
Between Custom and Law: Marriage in the Territory of the Archbishopric of Ohrid
With the integration of the central Balkans into the Byzantine Empire and, in particular, the establishment of the Archbishopric of Ohrid, the local population came into contact with a new and highly intricate legal framework. Rooted in the Roman legal tradition, which had, in turn, incorporated elements of ancient Greek and Hellenistic law, this system was heavily influenced by Christian ordinances and principles. The legislation pertaining to the institution of marriage underwent some of the profoundest changes. We dedicate this book to our esteemed professor Ljubomir Maksimović with heartfelt thanks for his unwavering support to successive generations of researchers at the Institute for Byzantine Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts

The civil war in Bosnia and Herzegovina,
as well as other events related to
the breakup of Yugoslavia, have long remained
largely outside the focus of Serbian
historiography. Politicisation, the passage
of time, and a lack of sources were the
main reasons – often also used as excuses
– why Serbian historians avoided this
important topic. Finally, this gap has only
recently begun to be addressed thanks to
authors such as Kosta Nikolić, who first
published the three-volume monograph
Jugoslavija, poslednji dani: 1989–1992, followed
by Krajina: 1991–1995, and, in 2024,
the first of three planned volumes of the
monograph Bosna i Hercegovina, rat koji

Church Policy of Byzantium after the Triumph of Orthodoxy (843–886)
The book deals with the policy of the Byzantine state in the field of ecclesiastical matters from the end of Iconoclasm in 843 to the death of Emperor Basil I in 886. It examines the attitude of the main political actors – the emperors and their closest collaborators – towards religious matters and the decisions they made concerning the various issues of Iconoclasm and Orthodoxy, appointment of the patriarchs, relations with the Church of Rome, and theological disputes with Muslims, non-Chalcedonian Christians, and Christian sects. This volume also considers missionary activity outside the borders of the Empire and policy towards religious minorities inside them, as well as the political and intellectual potential behind it
In memoriam Софија Губајдулина – висока свештеница савремене симфонијске музике
With this paper, I wish to provide a comprehensive overview of the symphonic output of the
remarkable composer Sofia Asgatovna Gubaidulina. Born in 1931 in Chistopol (present-day
Republic of Tatarstan, Russian Federation), Gubaidulina passed away on 13 March 2025 in
Appen, Germany, where she had lived since 1992. While she was a relatively late bloomer, in
comparison to her Soviet peers such as Edison Denisov or Alfred Schnittke, who hit their stride
much earlier, Gubaidulina eventually became the most prolific composer among the members
of the generation of ‘The Sixtiers’.
Stari Kotor: slikarstvo, spasenje duše, kultovi svetih
Preparation of CuWO4 films by thermal annealing of simultaneously RF/DC magnetron co-sputtered Cu–W films
Tungstate-based compounds have garnered significant interest for applications in photocatalysis, optoelectronics, and energy-related technologies due to their distinctive structural, optical, and electronic properties. This study focuses on the synthesis, structural characterization, and optical properties of copper (II) tungstate (CuWO4) thin films, produced via co-sputtering of metal precursors followed by thermal annealing in air at temperatures ranging from 450 to 650 °C. XRD and Vis-NIR spectroscopy confirmed that annealing at 600 °C yields CuWO4 films with the highest crystallinity and the lowest indirect band gap of 2.09 eV. A comprehensive analysis of the films' surface morphology, phase composition, and chemical states was conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results confirm the formation of highly crystalline CuWO4 films with a triclinic structure. Additional structural insights were obtained from Raman and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, which revealed vibrational modes associated with the WO6 octahedral units. These films should be further explored for their potential applications in photocatalysis and photoelectrochemical cells.Peer-reviewed manuscript: [https://hdl.handle.net/21.15107/rcub_dais_18500
