Synthesis of Organogels Loaded with Biginelli Twins Derived from Vanillin: Antioxidative Potential for Wound and Skin Protection

    No full text
Tetrahydropyrimidines (THPMs), which are made from the Biginelli reaction, have been studied a lot for their possible biological uses, but they have not been considered as low-molecular-weight organogelators (LMOGs). Organogels, formed by combining LMOGs with organic solvents to create self-assembled nanoscale fibers, represent a significant area of study. In this work, a series of symmetrical THPMs starting from vanillic aldehyde were synthesized. Five novel THPMs were isolated, characterized, and evaluated for their gelation properties. Also, the possibility of fine-tuning the rheological properties of the organogel with the addition of a small content (2 wt%) of SiO2 nanoparticles (average size 7 nm) was investigated, which was achieved. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed that the organogels formed a self-assembling 3D network. This research shows a creative way to use vanillin as a bio-based building block to synthesis THPMs. These THPMs, when added to organogels, make a stable and effective way to deliver antioxidants. Organogels developed in this study present a promising strategy for protecting the skin and promoting wound healing by effectively combating oxidative stress. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025

In keeping with the editorial policy of continuously engaging with contemporary scholarly trends, the Main Theme section of this year’s first issue of Musicology is dedicated to Romani music and dance in the Balkan countries and their diasporas. Of the five contributions, the first two offer different approaches to the historical aspects and the systematization of Romani music studies conducted over an extended period in Bulgaria and Serbia, respectively. The representation of Romani identity in music has proven to be a particularly fruitful topic, as demonstrated by a study focusing on several Yugoslav BlackWave films and their subsequent discographic releases. The subsequent article provides extensive data on the self-organization of Romani musicians in Hungary during the Austro-Hungarian period and the Horthy era. The final contribution compares ethnographic examples from Romani community life in Transylvania with data from other parts of the world to conceptualize the living quality of music, personal melodies, sonic agency, and musical empathy. The Varia section also includes five contributions, encompassing thematically and methodologically diverse studies related to the musical cultures of Georgia, Greece, Вosnia and Herzegovina, the former Yugoslavia, and Lithuania.Tема броја: Музика и плес Рома на Балкану и у његовој дијаспори / The Main Theme: Music and Dance of Roma in the Balkans and its Diaspor

    No full text
This article examines the cultural and economic value concepts of folkfusion music in Georgia, a genre that blends local traditional (folk and sacred) music with Western popular styles. The focus is on exploring how the tension between perceiving traditional music as cultural heritage and as an economic commodity affects the development of folk-fusion. The study highlights the genre’s potential to serve as a cultural ambassador for Georgia internationally, while also noting the current lack of consistent support for its strengthening and consolidation. The article argues that achieving a balance between cultural embeddedness and economic sustainability is crucial for the genre’s development and integration into the global music industry. It concludes that realizing the potential of folk-fusion requires shifts in attitudes among musicians, audiences, and policymakers, along with increased institutional support

Discussions on gender in operatic discourse began gaining traction in the last quarter of the twentieth century with the emergence of feminist opera studies. This article examines these discussions by focusing on the Lithuanian comic-strip opera Alpha. The opera explores the transformation of gender roles by telling the story of the poet Federico García Lorca through the eyes of his sister, Isabelle. In this article, I question the role of contemporary opera in such discussions, analyzing how Alpha’s creative team – director, stage and costume designer Gintarė Minelgaitė alias Dr. GoraParasit, composer Albertas Navickas, and librettist Gabrielė Labanauskaitė – constructs the image of a woman who dares to challenge the established social order

In this paper, we analyze the lexicon of the novel OZiljci by the regional writer Zoran G. Jeremic. Although the novel does not explicitly state where the protagonists are from, certain, dialectical features can be identified based on their speech. In this regard, we examine dialectisms and regionalisms, with a focus on specific morphological and phonological forms, as well as syntactic constructions (zjare u nebo; isla u nadnicu, kopala, Znjela; Otme mu se pamet. The use of proverbial constructions, phraseologisms, and unusual comparisons stands out as a distinctive feature of the novel’s language (Dobro je kad seljak kuka, gadno je kad ¢uti; Niko ne zna sta mu Zivot sprema, danas jesi, sutra te nema; pupa javore; puna ko sige; nerazdvojni ko uStipak i sir). The goal of this paper is to identify and describe these characteristics as a contribution to the study of the language in the regional literature of Southwestern Serbia

Unwanted Childbearing and Child Nutritional Status in the Western Balkan Roma Communities

    No full text
This book investigates the relationship between maternal investment, unwanted births, and child nutritional outcomes in five poor communities of the Western Balkan Roma. Based on an evolutionary approach, the book directly assesses variability in Roma mothers’ parental care using data from UNICEF Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys 5 and 6 for the Roma settlements in Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The book includes useful information about Roma communities in the Western Balkans and their history and sufferings in the region. It reviews this history against the data on unwanted childbearing globally and in low- and middle-income countries. It addresses concerns related to Roma people's integration into European society, despite their longstanding presence in Europe. The book analyses the existence of health differentials among Roma children themselves, suggesting that some children are especially vulnerable. Therefore, it critically assesses how multiple (levels of) vulnerabilities affect differential Roma parental investment in children. This book is a useful resource for researchers interested in Roma studies, children's well-being, wellbeing of marginal groups, social work and social justice

Krivo kólo: ples, nostalgija in trajnostnost v transnacionalnem prostoru

    No full text
Contemporary research on dance within the framework of ICH emphasises an emic perspective – understanding traditions “from within” – which aligns with UNESCO’s concept of preservation. This approach necessitates collaboration among scholars, choreographers, communities and policymakers to ensure the sustainability of dance traditions in a changing sociopolitical landscape. Unlike earlier studies that primarily focused on historical continuity, UNESCO underscores the future of ICH and the socio-cultural challenges that influence its transmission. Building on UNESCO’s principles of heritage preservation and sustainability, my decade-long ethnographic research investigates the dance practices of Serbs from Slavonia (Croatia), a community that now navigates transnational realities. Displacement from Slavonia during the 1990s crisis fragmented this group across multiple countries, generating complex patterns of mobility, nostalgia and cultural reproduction. Through multi-sited ethnography, I trace these movements and explore how dance functions as a site of memory, identity negotiation and social cohesion in transnational contexts. Employing a bottom-up approach, I engaged community members in the identification of key elements of their cultural heritage, with krivo kolo emerging as a crucial symbol of belonging. More than just a choreographic form, krivo kolo serves as a ritualised practice that reaffirms connections to the homeland, structures social interactions and embodies affective ties across generations and borders. It initiates gatherings, marks celebrations and becomes a performative space where nostalgia, collective memory and identity politics intertwine. This raises critical anthropological questions about the role of dance in sustaining intangible cultural heritage within transnational frameworks. By situating dance as both a performative and discursive space, this presentation contributes to broader discussions on transnationalism, cultural sustainability and the evolving role of ICH in migrant communities

Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Alkaline Water Electrolysis Derived from Metal-Containing Ionic Liquids

    No full text
Carbon-based electrocatalysts decorated with Pt and Ni nanoparticles were introduced herein to increase the efficiency of the water splitting process and thus reduce the price of the produced green hydrogen. The materials were prepared by innovative direct carbonization of ionic liquids containing the corresponding metal, thereby eliminating the need for additional solutions and templates. The structural integrity of the materials was validated through X-ray diffraction analysis and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The electrochemical performance of these materials in catalyzing hydrogen (HER) and oxygen (OER) evolution reactions was evaluated using voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, uncovering distinct behaviors and highlighting the role of ionic liquid in tailoring materials’ properties and performance. Specifically, the presence of Ni was observed to enhance the catalytic performance towards the HERs due to the interaction of Ni nanoparticles and a higher amount of sp2-hybridized carbon present. In contrast, incorporating Pt into the carbon matrix was found to augment the catalytic activity for OERs with a Tafel slope of 129 mV dec−1 and a current density of 10 mA cm−2 reached at a potential of 1.67 V. Moreover, chronoamperometric measurements evidenced materials’ steady performance under both HER and OER conditions. These findings of good activity and stability showed that the introduced approach of synthesis of carbon electrocatalysts decorated with heteroatoms by direct carbonization of ionic liquids holds great promise for the synthesis of efficient and affordable electrocatalysts for green hydrogen production

    The Trauma of Freedom

In this paper, I apply the term “broken relationships” to refer to the creative outputs of Serbian composers who experienced creative crises after the first Music Biennale Zagreb, which took place in May 1961 and featured works by Dallapiccola, Bartók, Schoenberg, Webern, Hindemith, Eimert, Ligeti, Boulez, Messiaen, Cage, Lutosławski, Schaeffer, Stockhausen, and Kagel. For many young Serbian composers, this was a profound shock. The Music Academy in Belgrade was only founded in 1937, but it did not work at full capacity during WWII; hence the first generation of composers only graduated after the war. Following the doctrine of socialist realism imported from the Soviet Union, the young composers were subjected to a rigid academic canon and expected to master traditional forms and musical styles from the past. Although Yugoslavia parted ways with the USSR and Eastern Bloc in 1948, the technical and ideological conditions for composers became only slightly less repressive. Throughout the 1950s, Serbian composers were expected to gradually introduce some (relative) novelties but without discarding traditional artistic means
