The relationship between the supervisors and the supervisee: Experiences of PhD completers

This article is in English There is a growing pool of literature addressing doctoral students’ experiences, especially how the supervisory relationship prompted their poor wellbeing during their study. The purpose of this article is to offer additional critical discussion on PhD completers’ experiences, and to examine the influence that their supervisors had on completing their thesis.  A qualitative approach to research is applied to capture the experiences of eight PhD students, who were also senior lecturers in various higher education institutions, and who recently completed their studies in the United Kingdom. Data collected from semi-structured interview were analysed using a constructionist narrative approach, where stories were co-constructed between the participants and the researchers. Our research findings show that for some of these completers, success was not merely based on their individual determination, nor was the role of supervisors, but support from their family and friends. This research offers an insight into the positive and negative experiences of PhD completers which may help supervisors and other academic colleagues in universities in England and globally, on how to support students and how to be part of a successful PhD completion team

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have been widely part of the educational landscape since 2012. Over the last decade, they have seen, on the one hand, a massive development associated with the emergence of platforms such as Coursera, edX, Udemy or FutureLearn. Still, at the same time, it has become clear that they cannot be considered as a substitute for traditional formal university education. At the Department of Information Studies and Library Science at Masaryk University, MOOCs are offered to students as part of a particular course in which they receive support and feedback. The learning is also linked to credits, which increases students\u27 motivation to complete the course. The research will work with data from questionnaires in the first week and at the end of the course (n=18). The research will offer insights for running other similar courses based on the data. University support in terms of motivation and a sense of security is crucial. Students show high completion rates if they study the course as part of their curriculum. On the other hand, they name their inability to work well with time and organise their tasks as a significant barrier

This study was conducted at a multinational furniture company, aligned with Industry 4.0 standards, where a cyber-physical system (CPS) was already implemented with its respective hardware and software components. The primary purpose of the CPS is to gather data on the consumption of production resources such as energy, water, and compressed air, and to oversee the operational processes within the company. Initially, data collection was solely focused on the energy utilization of the production machinery and the produced workpieces. However, over time, we have evolved the cyber-physical system to broaden the data collection spectrum. This expansion was imperative to encompass the energy and other related parameters of the production support equipment, alongside the water consumption metrics. The subsequent phase of the research delved into exploring avenues to foster energy-conscious work practices. With the activation of the analytical application, the financial ramifications of superfluous energy consumption could be ascertained, and the proficient functioning of the production machinery could be real-time monitored via computers stationed within the facilities. Consequently, this setup serves to motivate employees towards adopting more energy-efficient work habits

The furniture industry represents an important industry branch worldwide with a continuous demand. However, using advanced technologies in furniture design can take the industry to new heights by meeting the expectations of the users. The main focus of this paper is to highlight the importance of incorporating new future technologies in furniture design which meet user expectations more effectively. Integrating the augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies in this process can create compelling results and exceptional experiences for customers, leading to increased business and customer satisfaction. AR and VR technologies allow us to bring furniture designs virtually into our homes, enabling us to see how it fits into the room\u27s environment in real-time and at a real scale. This technology not only enhances the user experience but also allows accurate sales and maximum customer satisfaction

More and more museums are offering environmental education programmes, and museum education activities are providing more and more learning and experiences for people of all ages. This study aims to find common ground between promoting sustainability and museum education activities. We investigate the role of museums in the development of environmentally aware attitudes in the framework of a doctoral research. One of our research sites is the Széchenyi Zsigmond Hungarian Hunting Museum of the Carpathian Basin. As part of the research, primary school students participated in museum education workshops. The aim of the surveys conducted at the Hunting Museum of Hatvan was to develop the natural science skills of the third to sixth grade pupils participating in the programmes by providing them with the broadest possible scientific basis and to increase their knowledge of our living and non-living natural resources. We observed the effects of environmental education about the museum workshops, documented changes in students\u27 knowledge and tested their short- and long-term memory (179-172-163 students participated). In the second survey, the students achieved better results in terms of changes in knowledge than in the first questionnaire (our hypothesis was confirmed). The results of the third survey exceeded the results of the second survey in most cases (except one question) (the hypothesis was partially confirmed or overturned)

Learning analytics is most often used to predict whether a student will succeed in a course or training. This helps identify students who need support to avoid failing or dropping out of school. The measurement, collection and examination of data is an indispensable tool not only for industry, but also for all educational institutions, based on which a deeper understanding and optimization of the educational process becomes possible in order to use resources and tools more effectively. In Hungary, with the transfer of universities to foundation management, the need for efficiency increased. The University of Dunaújváros (UOD), an independent higher education institution in the Central Hungarian region since 2000 and operating as a university of applied sciences since 2012, is also an indispensable tool for increasing efficiency. In this thesis, we define the educational analysis research framework applied in connection with the subject of Mathematics 1, one of the defining subjects of technical and economic training. The system realized as a result of the research enables UOD to use the most effective tools when planning the courses, thus making the most favourable use of its resources. A Dunaújvárosi Egyetem (DUE), a közép-magyarországi régió 2000 óta önálló, 2012 óta alkalmazott tudományok egyetemeként működő felsőoktatási intézménye számára is nélkülözhetetlen eszköz a hatékonyság fokozásában. Jelen dolgozatban a műszaki, gazdasági képzések egyik meghatározó tantárgya, a Matematika 1. tárgy kapcsán alkalmazott oktatáselemzési kutatási keretrendszerét határozzuk meg. A kutatás eredményeként megvalósuló rendszer lehetővé teszi, hogy a DUE a kurzusok tervezése során a leghatékonyabb eszközöket alkalmazza, így a forrásait a legkedvezőbben hasznosítsa

Proctoring as a journey to quality education? A critical review of the literature

The paper aims to analyse the current professional discourse and to map the current views and attitudes of proctoring online exam formats across the globe. The entire theoretical delineation focuses mainly on college or university formats. We introduce the international context in the first part and then discuss the analysis of the texts found in the review study at Scopus and Web of Science databases. The study results in a comprehensive summary of the positive and negative implementation aspects of proctoring. We also reach a new categorisation of the different methods used to control proctoring online exams. The study should provide synthesising findings with easy applicability. Our results may be valuable for educational institutions or others interested in online learning and online proctoring processes, not only when considering implementation

Nature and freedom in education - Findings from a qualitative study on school leisure time in natural settings

Nowadays, more and more educational methods are being used to raise students’ environmental awareness. At the same time, however, young people have fewer opportunities to spend leisure time in nature (in other words, to do free exploration in nature), the importance of which has been confirmed by numerous studies. This paper presents the results of a qualitative research that investigated the effects, implementation aspects and integration potential of free exploration in nature in the Hungarian school system. A total of 15 interviews were conducted in five schools. Data processing based on Grounded Theory was used to isolate the relevant aspects of the issue. The most important categories include positive aspects (e.g. pedagogical, psychological, social and physical benefits), negative aspects (e.g. accident factors; students put themselves, others and the environment at risk; negative feelings of students, parents and teachers), implementation aspects (e.g. degree of teacher control and education; preparation; link to school operations; role of age), barriers (e.g. weather; school environment; attitudes of students, teachers and parents; specific features of the education system; lack of time; risk of accidents; financial constraints) and facilitating dissemination (e.g. changing the education system; changing the mindset of teachers and policy makers; patronage; exchange of experience). These results can promote the conscious and appropriate use of free exploration in nature in education systems

Artificial intelligence, creativity and education: finding a new perspective

This review study aims to clarify the relationship between creativity development and artificial intelligence in education. Although this is a media-emphasised topic and individual technology projects (ChatGPT, Dalee-2, Midjourney) are part of educational activities, a more comprehensive analysis of the specific emphasis on creativity still needs to be provided. The study\u27s novelty lies in synthesising current knowledge and forming recommendations about the relationship between creativity and AI in education. The study analyses 16 documents from the Web of Science database and, based on these, identifies six broad categories for critical reflection on the phenomenon of educational practice: the need to rethink the educational environment, goals and objectives, the emphasis on AI literacy, the focus on topics related to the future and its problems, the importance of developing theoretical conceptualisation of problems and abstract models in the curriculum, the connection with computational thinking, and the integration into the whole curriculum instead of isolated courses
