Work Performance, Habits, and Personality of Hospitality and Tourism Management Student Interns of a Philippine State College: An Industry Perspective
Amidst changing landscape and fast-evolving hospitality and tourism sectors, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) mandates academic institutions to implement student internship programs and establish linkages with businesses and industries to capacitate students with actual workplace knowledge, skills, and attitude. However, it is unclear whether the student-interns are responsive to the actual needs of these industries. Thus, there is a need to constantly retool internship programs to respond to these changes and demands. Hence, this paper assessed the work performance, work habits, and work personality of hospitality and tourism management (HTM) student-interns of a public higher education institution from an industry perspective which can be used as a basis for crafting a responsive internship program. Employing a quantitative descriptive research method, this assessed HTM student interns of a state college in Northern Philippines across three areas of assessment, namely work performance, work habits, and work personality. A modified assessment form was used to gather data from the managers of 21 partner establishments which accommodated 144 HTM student interns for the period of 2014-2019. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Generally, as perceived by managers of partner establishments, the student-interns have performed ‘good’ in their work (M=3.2). Separately, they have performed ‘good’ in work performance in terms of quality (M=3.09), quantity (M=3.1), and knowledge (M=3.05). Additionally, they have performed ‘very good’ in terms of work habits (M=3.33) and work personality (M=3.32). This concluded that there is imbalance in the focus of student development the HTM students have fared better on personal-related development (work habits and work personality) as compared to professional-related development (work performance). Meanwhile, this recommends a review of the curriculum and instruction processes and other supplemental skills enhancement training for the students. Further studies are recommended to include perspectives of the students and the academe itself as well as internship experiences of students from other programs
The Effect of Wearing Masks on Social Interaction between King Abdulaziz University Students
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly altered how humans behave, including the widespread adoption of face masks as a public health measure. Using face masks as a protective measure against COVID-19 introduces a new factor in social interactions. Moreover, masks create a physical barrier that may help individuals feel more protected and less exposed in social situations, further mitigating social anxiety symptoms and increasing comfort.
Objectives: To determine the prevalence and degree of social anxiety of university-going students who wear masks compared to those who do not by administering a social interaction anxiety scale survey (SIAS).
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah. The study included 154 male and female participants 17-27 years of age who were undergraduate health and medical students at King Abdulaziz University. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 23.
Results: Out of 154 participants with face masks, 61.6% (n= 95) participants had a score less than 36, meaning they don\u27t have social anxiety, whereas 38.2% (n=59) participants had a score of 36 and higher, meaning they had social anxiety. Out of 154 participants without face masks, 54.5% (n=84) participants had a score less than 36, meaning they don\u27t have social anxiety, whereas 45.4% (n=70) participants had a score of 36 and higher, means they had social anxiety. Non-significant association (p>0.05) was found between participants who wear face masks and who don\u27t wear face masks.
Conclusion: The study concluded that most participants who wear face masks and those who don\u27t wear face masks had a lower score on the SIAS scale, meaning they don\u27t have social anxiety. No statistically significant effects have been observed between social anxiety and wearing of face mask
Changes in Quality of Life after Weight Reduction and Physical Therapy Interventions in Children with Obesity
Background: Obesity in children is a complex medical condition. The mental health of obese children is currently receiving increasing attention from researchers and medical practitioners. The wellbeing and quality of life of obese children are negatively impacted by a variety of psycho-social problems. Children who are overweight or obese may benefit from a training program that incorporates weight management, strengthening, and neuromuscular activities by increasing their strength, balance, participation, self-confidence, and general quality of life. Although there are many guidelines for strengthening and neuromuscular exercises, the majority of it do not specifically address the population of obese children. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a designed program that incorporates strength and neuromuscular exercise in addition to weight management that is specifically tailored to the restrictions and abilities of the obese child. Patients and methods: From schools, thirty obese children between the ages of 8 and 11 were chosen. The control group followed a nutritionist-designed weight-loss diet. The study group followed the same weight-loss program in addition to a neuromuscular and strength-training exercise program. Results: Our results revealed that there were significant differences (MD=11.06; P= 0.002; P<0.05) (MD=9.70; P= 0.002; P<0.05) in the mean ±SD values of pediatric quality of life inventory for both children and parents’ proxies respectively between the control group and the study group at after-treatment (55.70±9.88 and 66.76±6.86, respectively) (56.65±5.89 and 66.35±10.36, respectively). This significant increase in pediatric quality of life inventory score for children at post-treatment is more favorable of the study group (66.76 ±6.86) (66.35 ±10.36) than the control group (55.70 ±9.88) (56.65 ±5.89). Conclusion: The findings determined that a neuromuscular and strength training exercise program for obese children population is an effective approach to improve quality of life of obese children

Clinical Significance in Psychological and Educational Research: Does it Matter?
The main aim of this study was to confirm the importance of the concept of clinical significance. Also, this study aimed at discriminating among the concepts statistical, practical and clinical significance. In addition, this study attempted to present the most known methods to estimate the clinical significance of psychological and educational studies. These methods were Jacobson-Truax method (JT), GulliksenLord - Novick method (GLN), Edwards-Nunnally method (EN), Hageman-Arrindell method (HA), and Hierarchical Linear Method (HLM). The current study constraints on the Jacobson-Truax method (JT) and via using hypothetical data, psychological and educational examples were presented to explain how to implement JT method. Moreover, via applying JT method this study attempted to introduce a suggested model to investigate the clinical significance of the treatment on the differences among the groups of the experimental designs. Finally, the results of this study confirmed the value of investigating the clinical significance of the psychological and educational studies because the results could be statistically and practically significant although could not indicate to clinical significance either on the individual or groups level
Emerging A Socio-Economic and Psychological Impact Assessment Model for Urban Riverfront Development in Malaysia
Developing an urban riverfront requires an appropriate impact assessment to avoid any impairment in future. Impact assessment indicators and its parameters often be a set of guidelines in developing an expedient riverfront within urban area. Nonetheless, the impact assessment indicators and its parameters that could be used as standard pillars of local practices is currently concerned. Therefore, this paper aims to incipient a socio-economic and psychological impact assessment model for Urban Riverfront Development (URD) in Malaysia. Melaka River, Malaysia has been chosen as a case study to measure the socio-economic and psychological indicators including its parameters suited with the local area. Partial Least Squares Structure Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was utilized to generate the model. A stratified random sampling was adopted for sample selection technique and structured questionnaires were disseminated among 500 respondents. However, after screening process, only 421 questionnaires were accepted to be analyzed. An exploratory factor analysis has been done to observe underlying constructs measuring the property building owners’ perception of socio-economic impacts of URD. There are eight (8) hypotheses by eight (8) indicators and forty-three (43) parameters have been tested using PLS-SEM. Results show that only seven (7) indicators were accepted for the model which are property market, property development, social development, demographics, economic development, neighbourhood location and environment. Whereas, government policy was rejected from the model
